  • Hey guys welcome to a brand new video. Today we will be taking a look at another 2 very interesting aircraft! We have covered one of these aircraft in a separate video but we have not yet talked about one them. Our first aircraft is the The Diamond DA50RG which Diamond claims is your number one choice! But lets see how it compares to our next aircraft which is the Pipistrel Panther which is a Unique 4-seater with an attractive design.
    The Pipistrel Panthera is a lightweight, all-composite, highly efficient four-seat aircraft. Pipistrel designed the Panthera with an aerodynamic shape which allows the aircraft to be handled easily at low speeds. The organic curves guarantee maximum efficiency and minimum drag. In additional to the great looks the Panthera focused on safety because it features a full-airframe parachute rescue system. They developed the parachute to be able to deploy at high and lowspeeds. Currently Pipistrel is offering this aircraft as a kit airplane for amateur construction, or factory-built. Intended for registration in US Experimental - Exhibition, Air Racing and Market Surveys - category.
    The DA50 aircraft has several variants ranging from the DA50 Magnum which is an unpressurized version powered by an Austro AE 300 Diesel Engine rated at 170 hp. Up to the DA50-JP7 which is a 7 seat version powered by an AI-450S FADEC controlled turboprop engine rated at 465 hp. On September 9 Diamond Aircraft received certification from the EASA for its DA50 RG. With this achievement Diamond has first deliveries planned for the first quarter of 2021. Its a 5 seat variant powered by a CD-300 turbocharged, FADEC controlled jet fuel engine rated at 300 hp which is made by Continental Aerospace Technologies with 3 blade propellers. On top of Jet fuel being available around the globe, it also has vastly less emissions when compared to other fuels like AvGas.
    Hope you guys enjoyed and If you did make sure to subscribe and ring the notification bell so that you are notified when I upload more awesome videos!

    I've owned a Panthera for 14 months now. It's not my 1st aircraft and I doubt it'll be my last. Funny thing is, when I bought it, I had no idea Diamond aircraft even existed... and having seen the DA50 up close and even been lucky enough to fly one, although they are pretty evenly matched, I'd still choose the Panthera. I own homes in both the UK and Denmark as my partner is Danish... so I live between the two countries and spend a lot of time commuting in the air. If the Panthera has the DA50's engine, there would be no contest between the two. Yet despite the 40% more fuel burn per hour of my aeroplane, her cruise is 20knts faster and my range is a massive 400 miles further. However... I've recently completed my twin engine rating and with all the personal flying I do, I've often wished I had an extra couple of seats for extended family and because of this, I'm currently seriously considering investing in the twin engine DA62.

      that's so dope, how much did it cost, and if you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living??
      i like the Panthera and the da50rg. the new tech on the da50 is dope, but that range and speed for aircraft in its class is lacking.

    The Pipistrel Panthera wins hands down. Faster, increased range, higher service ceiling (higher = more comfort), costs less to buy, safety parachute, shorter takeoff length, faster climb rate - it's laughing at the competition.

    Hi Marlin, superb and objective comparison. Well done and keep up the great work. The non-emotive and factual comparison is much appreciated and helps you stand out from the crowd. Both aircraft are works of art. Pipistrel has electric and hybrid versions of the Panthera in active development following the recent certification of their electric Velis. I wrote a few times to Diamond aircraft asking them if they were considering a parachute system (as the incorporation of that has been a huge plus for Cirrus, and I am sure will help Panthera and their Pilots / PAX too in rare but dire emergencies). But, Diamond never responded and that’s sad. I trained on a Cirrus but fly a Pipistrel Virus SW, fully optioned. The aerodynamics and safety features of the aircraft are outstanding. An incredible LSA aircraft, MTOW 600kg. The videos of it and its features on my channel are private, however, at least for the next 10 years! Warm regards and blue skies. Vini

    It flys fast because the empennage tapers done going back the passenger compartment toward the tail, the father the width of the fuselage goes to the tail, the more areodynamic drag it has. This slows the plane down and take more fuel and power to fly it. The wind being generated by the prop has to provide thrust past the cabin all the way back behind the tail. The narrower we can make it the easier time the prop and engine has at providing thrust to keep the aircraft flying. If it was me I thin’ I’d go for the Diamond, and I’d love to fly either one! I just need a pilots certificate!

      There is no certified process for rebuild. That said, there might be one developed before most engines start hitting those marks. Much of what can/cannot be done on a plane is less about engineering, and more about documenting the process and certifying the results. So the engine might be perfectly fine to rebuild, but it cannot be done until it gets an approved process (including certified parts, etc.).

      Your two options in the US are 100LL and Jet-A - but if we are honest we will admit leaded fuel is probably getting banned in the next decade. The unleaded replacement is proprietary (read: expensive) and for now not made or distributed in any measurable quantity. And the chances it will be exported are slim to none. There are licensing issues with refineries. So, future 100UL replacements still need to be developed.
      Anyone buying a new plane has to give serious attention to the fuel issue. This is where inertia is going to kill GA - engine makers are using ancient designs based on leaded fuels and haven't put effort into new tech. Diamond is having some issues with their entry, but they'll get sorted out. I don't like "TBR", but again expect they will sort through that, eventually.

    It’s like comparing an A36 Bonanza with a Mooney Ovation. The Panthera is fast, looks sleek but won’t catty a whole lot. That $450k price won’t hold if it becomes certified in the USA. The Diamond is basically a 5 seat touring motor glider with that wingspan. It’s very frugal but it’s small tanks hold it’s range back. Bigger tanks will minimize passenger load you can carry but most people fly these planes with just one or two people on board. Cool basic review, not so much a compare. There’s not much innovation coming out of Wichita these days so watching the Europeans do their thing is exiting. When I flew Diamond and Dimona touring motor gliders 30 years ago I wondered when they would design four seater versions.

    • @FamilyManMoving
      @FamilyManMoving ปีที่แล้ว

      Good points, but I'll add that the range on either of these will exceed the bladders of the average family of four. I think our record is 4 hours before one of us had to go pee. Six hour endurance in a 4-seater is all I'd plan for.
      To your point on comparisons and price: agreed. I don't like these comparisons much because it's always "Certified versus Experimental", which is disingenuous at best. Strongly suspect the Panthera - once certified - will sell for more than a DA-50 out of the gate. The price will reflect pent-up demand, and a desire to recoup all the money spent getting FAA type cert. And yes, I am in the market, so these are more than arm-chair prognostications.

      The price difference is even more drastic now that we know how much the DA50 costs. Panthera is around $700K USD, where the DA50 is somewhere over $1M. I wish they would have gone the jet-a route with the panthera rather than mogas, its difficult to find here in the states, whereas jet-a is everywhere.
      I've flown the DA20 and DA40, both fantastic planes. I'm sure the DA50 is no difference. But that price is something else.

      Can you please explain what you said with more detail? New to the aviation world. What does spin 10 times mean

    • @generalrendar7290
      @generalrendar7290 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@k3iler05 certainly! I'm a Certified Flight Instructor in Single and Multi-Engine aircraft and I teach Instrument rating students. A spin, or more accurately a "stall spin", is a top killer of General Aviation pilots all over the world. The most popular modern GA aircraft in the world (or at least the US), the Cirrus SR-22 has *YET* to recover from one without the aid of a ballistic parachute. A spin occurs when the airplane stalls both wings while uncoordinated and one wing is stalled more than the other one. The plane will spin around the wing that is more stalled until you recover or you slam into the ground. A normal stall recovery is to lower the nose to decrease the angle at which your wing encounters the oncoming wind (angle of attack) and to add full power to get more wind over the wings. However a stall spin is different, because if you do that the plane will not only stay in the spin, but accelerate faster in the spin. This is because the engine pulls the upper wing around the turn and gives it slightly more lift, the wing on the inside is at a much higher angle of attack and is pulled backwards as the upper wing is drawn forwards. If you roll the wings away from the inside of the turn you only reverse the direction of the spin. So how does one recover from a stall spin?! There are 4 steps and pilots use the acronym PARE to remember them. P: power to idle. This is done to keep the propeller from pulling the upper wing forward and to keep the falling speed at terminal velocity. A: ailerons neutral. This is done to get both wings to have the same lifting potential. R: rudder opposite the spin. This is the proper way to stop the rotation in a spin without reversing the direction of the spin. E: elevator/stabilator forward *ONLY* enough to break the stall and once directional control is reacquired nose up gently until you are at a safe speed (generally Vno, or Va, max structural cruising speed or maneuvering speed) before you reapply power to arrest any descent. Many planes can recover from the 1st or even 2nd spin, but after the 3rd or 4th spin many planes are stuck especially if they are loaded with an aft center of gravity. However it takes a particularly disciplined pilot to run through that procedure and then point the nose at the ground after a spin has been induced. The reason that GA pilots often spin into the ground is because they have royally screwed up something in the departure, pattern, or landing portions of flight usually. Most often pilots are turning base to final and the crosswind is pushing their aircraft off to the side to the point where the pilot should probably go-around and try the approach again. However pride kicks in and the pilot tries to coax their plane to turn tighter so they can save the approach and avoid the go-around. The planes that are spin rated are either acrobatic planes or have particularly strict limits on how they are weighted and balanced. Usually limited to an instructor and a student often less than full tanks and even extra weight placed in front of the center of lift. So for the Panthera to recover _that_ quickly and weighted the way it was is astounding!

      Right now flying for me is a dream, but I enjoy researching and knowing about random stuff (I like to be able to relate to people so hopefully if I meet a pilot I can talk about some stuff lol).
      From the research I've done, it has made me realize that flying/owning a plane is doable. I'd say most people never think about it. If they do they probably just see the flashy jets haha.
      I might go for a demo flight sometime in the future to see if it's for me. I would love to own that panthera one day (I was looking at the cirrus). From my limited knowledge and POV I'll probably spend a lot of time acquiring training, even after passing the PPL. My mission would be a cross country airplane that beats driving there.
      If/when I go for it I'll probably have 3 airplanes in goal. A starter one to gain experience/hours. A panthera would be super cool and the dream one if skill and (especially budget) allows would be a TBM 940 or similar. I love how cool they look and how fast they are. Something affordable and cross country close to or a bit over 200kts would be amazing though.

      The Da-50 market: Flying SUV for an affluent family of four. And maybe their dog. If this plane CRUISED at 185 with a larger fuel tank and YES a chute (one need only look at the recent Avanti pilot incapacitation crash to see the value of a chute), then the market for this plane might be more wide open.

      Not really. One is type-certified in the US, and the other is experimental. Huge difference. The certified Panthera will be considerably more expensive than the experimental, and probably about the same price as the DA-50. That's if Textron even goes through the hassle to put it on market. @@franklaszlo9227 I hope you are correct, because GA in the USA desperately needs new designs with modern technologies designed in from day one.
      I based my estimate on previous planes that went from experimental to EASA to USA, and...Diamond is one of them! I think the DA50RG was originally scoped at $650K, but realistically goes for $1.1M right now.
      The problem with bilateral agreements is that you cannot purchase one in the USA. That means - even after you ferry it - you'll need to (I believe) re-certificate in the USA (as experimental) and your logistical support is almost nil. No dealer means no service.
      Could someone keep a Euro registration in the USA? I guess they could push it, but I don't think it's legit long-term (I am not an expert here).
      My thought is if demand stays high, the Panthera will do a US certification, and Textron will try to recoup their costs with a high price. Keep in mind they sell "new" C172s for almost $800K, and those airframes were designed when Benjamin Franklin was flying kites in his backyard.
      My overall opinion is we won't see it. Textron bought them for the patents in the electronic version, to be ready for short and regional package/logistics delivery in and between metro areas. Everyone thinks we'll be in electric GA planes in ten years. I think it more likely we'll see smaller commercial "flying delivery vans" powered by excited pixies. Probably automated between private Amazon airfields.
      Hey, thanks for your thoughts. Great talking with smart people.
      quick edit: I would not go for the DA50. I don't like the center stick, and it's too slow for the travel I'd do. Also would be nice to have a parachute. I've seen too many families saved by them. The most recent was the vision jet that got sucked into a huge Florida storm a few weeks back. Must have been like a washing machine in there when dad popped the chute. His wife and 8-year old walked away unscathed. That same storm killed a pilot when his DA-42 got picked up, flipped, and slammed upside down onto the taxiway while holding short. Same storm. Not knocking Diamond there - no way you can plan for that. Just pointing out how bad Southern storms can get, in no time at all.
