    I think the reason that it makes the film feel more "exciting" is because the human eye also has a pretty wide field of view as well, so it's a lot more engaging when you're seeing details that would normally be regulated to just being in the corner of your eye.

    • @BK-it8ht
      @BK-it8ht ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It is different, but not better. The human visual field extends through an angle of about 155° wide by 120° high. That works out to 4:3.075, so 4:3 video would be ideal. Anamorphic lenses have become affordable and mainstream, but I feel it was not intended to be used for today's available medium. Why it is better to use just a part or your 16:9 screen and not the full surface? Watch an anamorphic video on your phone (on portrait mode) and tell me if it's pleasent. Look how cool is Zack Snyder's Justice League in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio.

    • @VoltageFilms
      @VoltageFilms ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@BK-it8ht Well because it looks familiar yet also different enough to make you feel transported in a way. Changing aspect ratio and having some distortion creates a dreamlike feel. When something is shot say 60fps (which is closer to our vision than 24fps) and full frame it often feels cheap and not cinematic. It makes you notice the fakeness of costumes and sets. Because you are too familiar with that view in real life. Having some imperfection and distortion in an image is often more immersive on a psychological level. This is why we still shoot anamorphic and still use 24fps. Same goes for continuing to shoot and project on analog film.

    • @ivwvy
      @ivwvy ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@VoltageFilms someone gets it 👏 before I got into media, film, and editing, I always thought it was best to shoot in max fps and least distortions or imperfections, which now I realise is why some modern films and shows look so weird and hard to watch. It’s kind of like it’s too realistic to the point that it becomes uncanny. 24fps just has that look, it’s not too slow but keeps away from being too fast either. I’m actually in my final year of school and for my media project this year I’m going to make an action short film inspired by inception, cause I enjoy editing and visual effects, but would you say the best video settings to shoot in would be 4k 24? My school has cameras we can borrow but the highest they go is 1440p 24, or 1080 50

    This 35mm is my next lens purche for sure.. For close focus def use diopters and also getting another lens like the 100mm would help for super close and intimate dialogue shots or closeups in general, but it will take more panning and production time to pull off. Great video. Love the color on the skin tones in this lens!

Sometimes when you’re in the creation process you make calculations on yourself that are unreasonable. So when someone shows you, this is what you can achieve, it helps you to realise you can grow with the process and you what do you need.

    Totally agree, the close focus range is the only issue with these lenses, otherwise, they are the best for certain kind of shoots.
    Also, having them in a variety of squeeze factors really helps choose which one you want for your project. I never believe in "one lens for everything", we should always have different lenses for different type of shots.
    Unless in the future, we have AI supported ones that change a look impossible otherwise and can give you EVERYTHING, from changing distortion intensity to zoom to focal length or everything, but then, it would be boring to just have one lens, even if it changes shape to become a zoom lens or whatever. You can get very inexpensive diopter or closeup filters online or at your local camera store. They generally come in a kit and have different magnifications. Just remember the more you magnifiy the less distance you can actually focus on. For instance, if you put on the 2x filter you can no longer focus at infinity and if you go higher from there you can no longer focus even closer than infinity. I believe he is mistaken on his comment about work in post. These filter don't change the squeeze at all because it magnifies both the vertical and horizontal plane evenly. Your squeeze stays the same.

    Wow, that was great. I don't even have any knowledge in film or cameras (this vid randomly showed in my feed), but if I saw more videos like this where I see the result, and then someone explains to me how it was done, I then understand something about a subject I knew nothing about 5 minutes ago, and that piques my interest. I will be visiting more often now.

    Vuh, awesome short film. I dig everything about it except for the flares on the surui (which is beyond your control of course). Maybe use a promist on top of it to help it look less clinical. Keep up the great work man. Looking forward to more films from you.
