I'm from Brazil, I used to listen to Pennywise on 1996. It's cool to watch this reaction on 2022 with a black dude listening to it. Pennywise was a punk, skate, surf music thing. There was no black dudes in America listening to Pennywise on the 90s. But in Brazil, everyone on Xsports used to love Pennywise, no matter the color of your skin.

    T,
You should check out Bad Religion. Have you done the song "American Jesus"? It's a great tune to check out. I recommend bands like Hatebreed, Sick Of It All, Madball, ALL, Dropkick Murphy's, Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, DRI, Black Flag, GBH, Bad Brains, Social Distortion, Corrosion of Conformity (COC), more Biohazard and more Pennywise of course but these are all great punk bands. I mean I could go on and on but these are all bands I have listened to and like. I would love to see you do a Jam session of just punk rock bands. I don't mind the crossover bands like some purists of punk because at the end of the day there is a message to their songs from these groups.

    • @lauraloyland3165

“Call it Religion” a demo recorded in 1986 by The Offspring is the most anti religion song I’ve ever heard and I used to be a Christian many years ago. And I’m also a fan of Bad Religion.

      @John57945 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@transmit13 I disagree Sick of it All, Biohazard and Dropkick Murphy's are not good bands. Maybe because they are more crossover bands IYO but I like them all the same. Plus COC 's newer stuff is more crossover than their first 2 albums. I indicated that I can appreciate crossover bands so you obviously didn't pay attention to what I wrote.

To put it mildly... when bands like Green Day and the Offspring became wildly popular as 'punk rock' acts in the 90's, they didn't represent the underground genre.
Slayer recorded an album of punk covers in 1996 called 'Undisputed attitude" cos (late guitarist) Jeff Hanneman was a big fan of SoCal punk rock in the 80's, and he was like, "THIS is real punk rock! That shopping mall crap ain't punk!"

Late but better than never, there’s a million punk rockers out there that will never have commercial success but we’re out there, we’re making music but it’s just never gonna reach the masses and that’s ok, we put it out of us and into the ether for the world to absorb. Glad to see this guy getting why us old farts have a lot of disdain for what punk rock devolved into by the time it became another marketing trend in the 90's. I cringe anytime I hear the old songs on a corporate commercial!
Not all of the commercially viable stuff is entirely without merit however. Bad Religion for example started in California in the early days of the SoCal punk scene. While I don't particularly care for the sound of their MTV era albums, I get that they were trying to bring the same message they always had to a wider audience.

True punk is unfiltered. It's anger at what is around us, and fighting back using music. This was one of my favorite songs way back. Rise Against is not full on punk, but they are one of the more recent bands that I respect because they just say what they feel as well. I always hated when people called stuff like "Green Day" punk, everyone saying they listened to punk rock back in the day, and would put on Green Day, lol. That's pop, not punk.

Punk seemed to start as a place where young people were frustrated and angry and didn’t feel like society was made for them, kind of like now with Gen Z.
I used to watch a lot of shows about punk and music history. Apparently punk originally was influenced by reggae.
It’s extremely sad that it is still relevant. And society itself has become a place where we are shamed for thinking or feeling anything bad. “Stop bringing people down” “cheer up” “don’t be sad”
Why is it bad to feel negative things?

Agree 100% with the comparison to hip hop, always a punk rocker growing up in the 80s, but also loved run dmc, NWA, all had a message, more often than not, an uncomfortable truth that most of society would rather ignore. That’s what is missing in any music made today, too afraid to take a stand one way or another and alienate even a few fans. I guess it’s good business, but it makes for bad music.

"Nobody makes music like this anymore". I don't agree. It's always being made. It's just that it mostly lives in the "underground" where ideas are allowed. But, that's where it's always survived. Real music is out there, you just have to look for it. Bandcamp, for example. Great video.

Want a old school punk song from another pop 90 band Offspring "lapd" but that song might get you canceled... Their more modern song from a few years back "stuff is messed up" is much more fun

Thank you for seeing punk in it's truest form and making the connection with old rap it's truth a message and has been watered down same as hip hop and rap same shit going on but to many distractions to see real issues until its to late I like the open mind and different points of view 💯

Yes please dive deeper. i would start with bands like MC5, New York dolls followed by The Deadboys, TV and some of the early British punk bands. The Damned, Buzzcocks, Gen x( Billy Idols first band) The Clash. love what your saying and feeling. Real Punk was a movement not just music. It spoke of all the things all other music was afraid to speak about. You can see why authorities did everything possible to portray to the public how Punk Rockers were the scum of earth and trouble makers.

Pennywise are a solid skate 🛹 Punk band formed early 90’s with a hot rabbit hole . As a musician with a punk rock 🎧 reaction channel i suggest you also Fuck Authority by Pennywise and Days Of The Phoenix by AFI . Do it and i will subscribe of course.

Been saying it forever brutha.. you are spot on. There is only punk and there is only pop. But punk is always alive. It's not just music. It's a way of thinking about life. Love the reaction.

Love the fact that you point out the importance of the lyrical side on the older and more serious punk bands such as pennywise and dead kennedys etc. but I think some of the "punk" bands that came from 90-00 such as green day or blink-182 had another important role making that energetic and stupid --- having fun kind of music! Its important to be conscious about things that happen and matter us all through the globe but on the other hand you need to enjoy and learn about the simple things in your personal and social life growing up! I think the same goes with whats happened with rap. Also both of the genres have had several fun and meaningless songs (talking lyrics) throughout the history, maybe to catch some people from outside the scene or just simply having fun or being young etc. Some of them really know how to write stuff that sounds like a daily base talking with some good points in them. Anyway LOVING your content and the points you make!

Hiphop did return in the late 90's and early 2K. Then it went dormant again. Punk rock similar.

pennywise is the most down to earth band of all time. I've partied with them after many shows, and they just roll to the bar and kick back. never once do they name drop or act better than anyone. I met them at the Pomona Fairplex and said we were going to a bar down the street after the show if they wanna go, and they said ok. then they showed up and just hung out. very well known band in southern California and they acted like any random joe Schmoe. I'm a dude btw... it's now like they were chasing tail.
