Eva Marie Saint presenting Jack Lemmon with the Oscar® for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in "Mister Roberts" at the 28th Academy Awards® in 1956. Introduced by Jerry Lewis.
Jack Lemmon was one of our finest actors, and Eva Marie Saint was, and still is, one of the great class acts of all media, and a dynamtie actress herself. They don't make them like either of them, anymore.
Imagine stealing a movie from Fonda, Cagney, and William Powell when you are still just a youngster. But that is exactly what Jack Lemmon did as Ensign Pulver in a performance which will live forever. Nobody could have played it better. His cowardly, goofy transparency was so easily identifiable. Who among us--at least the men among us--has not behaved that way at some point in life? Bravo, Jack, for being so utterly human. We still miss you.
totally agreed about lemmon! but a shame that you said `fonda and Cagney and WILLIAM Powell´but Powell is imo a better actr then the two others. and Lemmon is one of the best actors EVER! :)
You know, I see this slightly differently than you do... For Jack Lemmon, it's the start of a legendary career. For Fonda, it's the reintroduction to him on the big screen. Before 'Mr. Roberts' he'd spent almost a decade on Broadway; he only got the part because John Ford demanded it. It was the beginning of the second half of his career. For Cagney, he'd been doing studio work... three films a year according to contract, that kind of thing. But this particular script let him stretch his acting chops back to the vaudville-ish comedy where he started. And William Powell, that great gentleman, it was a sunset... the last film in a wonderful career.
This was a great cast. I would not say any one stole anything from the others. This was one great movie and is a big reason, the sequel, "Ensign Pulver'" was so disappointing.
Watching "Mister Roberts" as I type. Keep waiting for Jack Lemmon's next scene. So thrilled to know the sublime Ms. Saint will be 99 on the Fourth of July.
Such a great talent! And playing Ensign Pulver in “Mr. Roberts” with such a distinguished cast?? He must have been on cloud 9!! I know I would have been!! Who doesn’t love Mr. Lemmon?! ❤️⭐️🙌🏆👏🏻❤️
Smooth. Back when men knew how to wear a tuxedo properly [you know, with socks and posture, and a bunch of other stuff they don't teach anymore] And note Lemmon's class here. He's up there quickly, he's humble, and he doesn't have a prepared speech.
Jack Lemmon tells a story how when arriving to the Oscars he leaned on a rail with wet red paint and it was all over his suit which he tried to clean moments before his name was called which is why he seemed a little frazzled with the short acceptance speech.
You had some of the greatest (and most beautiful) actresses in the history of Hollywood presenting awards that night: Eva Marie Saint, Grace Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn.
Wait, this ceremony didn't used to last longer than the average childbirth? They don't have to read every nominee with clips and applause between said clips?

RIP Jack Lemmon (February 8, 1925 - June 27, 2001), aged 76
You will be remembered as a legend
Just under 3 months ago Eva turned 100.
he was so young and looked really happy and moved :) What a sweet actor
Probably the most succinct acceptance speech for an Oscar win ever. What a classy gentleman he was. RIP Jack. ♥
That could be the best speech in Oscars history.
I don't know. Joe Pesci's speech seems to edge out.
Certainly one of the shortest

I really miss this guy.
What a line up of nominees.
Five great performances.
Lemmon, Mineo and O'Connell are extraordinary!
Mineo was great in Rebel without a cause.
Joe Mantell was fabulous in Marty. Really, they were all Oscar worthy.

Eva Marie Saint looks so classy ♥
Love you forever jack❤

A deserved win for me.
You should watch him the 2nd time he gets an Oscar - he looks like he’s in total shock !!! 😮
Great speech
Oh wow, he was just a kid!
Way to go Jackie! ♥
... I get overly attached to actors sometimes.
@@MuppetMollyStarGleek same here!
Jack Lemmon looked SOO handsome, not like 1974 when it looked like King Tut went upstage to pick up his Oscar for "Save the Tiger".
Nice speech.
One of the greats. So young and demure here - he later was much more verbose in accepting awards.
Jack, I think you're ready for the Olympics!
His later acceptance speeches were longer, that's mellowing, you savor the moment.
well deserved:)
@etrax2000 All of the men seemed to do that back then, didn't they? Frank Sinatra did, and so did Brando when he got his first one.
A moça gostou do beijo 😅
I would have pick Henry Fonda 🤔
I would think that Henry Fonda would have been classed as lead actor, not supporting actor for Mr Roberts.
Sal Mineo got robbed.
weird that Lemmon is Always serios on the stage when is is a comidec actor
too bad Lemmon is already dead now R.I.P ;(;(;(;(;(;(;(
Yeah... but in some way, he will live forever, thanks to his work, which was amazing. But I wished he would live at least till 100...
"Supporting" actor??? His was the title role! Arthur O'Connel from "Picnic" got robbed.
No, the title role was played by Henry Fonda.
The movie was called "Mr Roberts" not "Ensign Pulver"
They were all Oscar worthy. Imagine Marty without Joe Mantell.
What? No political grandstanding? What will become of us?
