    PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE USING AN OVEN SAFE JAR!!!!!
    Ok I didn't see this warning anywhere else so I wanted to put this up. As a person who use to work in a glass foundry I can tell you, rapidly heated glass can and will shatter! For those who didn't know, glass will expand when heated and contract when cooled. Any sudden rise or drop on temperature can cause stress on the glass leading it to crack or shatter (depending on the glass), this is called thermal shock. That is why glass artists use annealing ovens to safely bring glass down from a working to room temperature over the course of a few days (depending on the thickness and formula). Your standard soda lime glass (like store bought salsa or jam jars) might not be able to take the heat and crack when placed in direct high heat or taken from hot to cool, like put in the refrigerator from oven or vice versa. Some glass, such as Pyrex, has a certain formula that allows it to withstand heat better than others (can still fracture but significantly less likely to) making them "oven/food safe." Not only is it formula better suited to take the heat, but the glass is tempered, so that if it does break, it is more likely to crack rather than shatter.
    Before you attempt a project like this, please make sure your jar can take the heat. Mason jars or other canning jars, I believe, are capable of withstanding up to around 130 degrees C (266 F) which should be within your clay baking temperature range. If you insist on using a standard recycled glass jar, just be cautious when heating and cooling. Don't try to cut corners by raising your oven temp or putting the glass in a chilled place to save time. Perhaps try to bake both the clay and glass in a non-preheated oven. Meaning that the jar will be able to reach temperature a bit slower than just sticking it into a preheated oven.
    That being said, I really like the design/concept for this project. I'm a huge LotR fan. Just trying to make sure everyone is DIYing safely!

      would you suggest bath and body works jars or are they too thin ? thank you in advance

    • @KydtheSyd
      @KydtheSyd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Rosa R As I mentioned it the last portion of my comment, I highly suggest jars that are meant for canning. Mason jars (or their equivalent) will be submerged in boiling water before used for homemade jellies or jams to sterilize the jars. They are are created to be able to take higher heat. I don't know what kind of glass Bath and Bodyworks is using, but if you want to try it, just be a bit more cautious (maybe wear eye protection).

      Osvaldo Adventure glad you said that. I was thinking that must be an expensive project to use Pyrex glass and worried people would just shove jars in their oven. Because you know at least one person. would have clay inside jar as well as lid shut and the horror the poor Hobbits would endure.

      Hi everyone,
      Thanks for your input. I'd like to remind you that I left comments on how I bake my jars in the description of the video. I've done this for quite a long time now and I've never had any problems whatsoever. I've had oven-safe dishes cracking on me before, but never a jar I recycled with polymer clay. My videos are windows into my artwork and of course I can only talk from my experience and what has worked for me. I would never promote anything that I would consider dangerous.

      @@MaiveFerrando I am going to try making my own version of this for the first time... Would a candle jar be good to use for this?

    Has it only been a day since I discovered this part of TH-cam? These clips are addictive and a total pleasure to watch. The tiny koi ponds and fish tanks made by another creator blew me away. I want a tiny fish tank!
    So far, I've been watching clips made by, AkemeruKawaii, sandrartes, SugarCharmShop, Maive Ferrando and yourself. You're all equally talented and creative. The funny thing is, it must take a certain type of person to make these clips.
    Why? All your clips are presented in the same style. They have a light tune playing in the background. The tutorials are concise and logical. They don't last longer than they need to and there isn't a bit of ego babble. Every stage is explained properly and it leaves you with no doubt about what is required if you're going to make it yourself. All use fast forward properly and it doesn't move too fast.
    There are many other similarities I could point out. But, I think I've made my point and backed it up sufficiently. Far too many tutorials last an hour and what you learnt in that hour amounts to 10 minutes. If that's the case, then make a 10 minute clip. All they do is waste my time with their ego.
    Anyway, I thought you would appreciate what I have to say especially because it's all praise. Now, I have one or two questions. As I've watched the different clips, certain aspects stand out. For a start, the entire creative process involved here doesn't appear to be an expensive hobby. Perhaps the clay, paints and glues form the biggest part of the cost. Considering the amount of materials used in each creation, my impression is each model is made for a minimal cost, especially the tiny things. So, as hobbies go, this does not cost the Earth. Or, am I wrong?
    Also, I'm very eager to try this out for myself and I'm going to the craft store tomorrow to buy some basic supplies. What's struck me in all the clips is how simple each step appears. I can appreciate it involves a delicate touch. But, even so, working with the clay looks effortless. This leads me to believe there are two possibilities why. Either, it is easy. Or, you just make it look easy. I suppose there's a third option and it's a bit of both. What would you say it is? Bear in mind that I realise that with any craft, no matter how easy, there is a learning curve. I have the soul of an artist, so I'm not a complete noob. =P That said, I don't see the learning curve being huge here and after watching the clips, I feel like I'd be able to make a decent tiny fish tank the first time I attempt to create one.
    Anyway, thanks for your time and for playing a part to inspire me to try this myself. I look forward to your future creations. =)
    Peace.

    • @MaiveFerrando
      @MaiveFerrando  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and thanks for your message.
      When you refer to "Maive Ferrando and yourself"...well, I am Maive Ferrando ^_^
      It would be a lie if I said that sculpting is easy. I wasn't born knowing how to do it and I never had an interest until maybe five years ago. Of course when I started, I wasn't good. But it's like that with everything. I wasn't good when I started playing the guitar, but I got better. That just comes with practice.
      I'm glad you were inspired by so many people to go out and buy supplies to start sculpting your own fish pond, and I know it can sometimes look easy, because you are watching a 5 minute clip of what might have taken hours or days to complete; but keep in mind that it might not be easy at first, and that you might encounter problems. I am not saying you will, but that you might. If so, don't despair because we all go through them. We still encounter problems or make mistakes, even though we are more experienced.
      The advantage of polymer clay is that it doesn't harden until you bake it, so you have all the time in the world to mold to until you're happy with it.
      I hope you enjoy the process of making your fish pond but don't get discouraged if it doesn't turn out the way you envisioned. Thinking and finding ways to avoid making the same mistakes in the future, is also part of the process :)

    • @bullzdawguk
      @bullzdawguk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Umm. Oops! >.< Yes, you are Maive Ferrando, you are also yourself. So, both are true. Well done, you passed the test I just made up, in order to save face. =P
      Your reply is most appreciated. After painting lead figures in my younger years, I realise the end results involves long periods in between each stage. If anything, I like this aspect. Somehow, it's more rewarding for me. It's as I thought and practice makes perfect. It would be foolhardy to think otherwise, as this is true of most things in life.
      I guess having the soul of an artist gives me an instinctual approach. For example, I've never worked with a clay medium before and I'd imagine the technique involves a bit of a balancing act. You don't want to apply too much pressure on the clay while moulding, while at the same time pressure is necessary. So, a part of the learning curve involves this, as well as learning other techniques to achieve various effects, like the one I saw to put scales on a fish. The clip I watched simply used a raised pattern on a tool they used.
      Anyway, thanks again. You helped considerably, since you confirmed many things. I share your belief about learning by our mistakes and personally believe they offer the most benefits in the long run. The important thing is to be passionate about our pursuits in life. Passion fuels our tenacity to grab our dreams, over chasing them.

    This was so amazing I had to comment. I have seen many videos now on hobbit hole book nooks and statues. Your finished product is the cleanest, most professional look I've seen. This is the only video I've seen so far featuring polymer clay. Most of the finished pieces from other videos have an unmistakable hand made look, but your seams are so tight, the texturing and painting applied with such care. The way you use texturing to make the clay look like bushes is amazing. This really looks machined and not hand made! The wood texture you created on the clay with a needle is absolutely beautiful. You are a very very good artist, which is why I believe this looks so much better than others made by hobbyists. The front door is a masterpiece, I love how it turned out. The material you used for grass on the top, and the small weeds on the ground look fantastic and realistic. Phenomenal job from start to finish. I would pay good money to own one of these!

I was going to do a hobbit house and will certainly be following your video to achieve it. you are an amazing artist and have a fabulous flair. Keep posting your videos, they are fab! Hi Colleen, thank you so much for your message. I'm really sorry to hear about your friend, it's never easy, but I know in my heart that your friend knows about the fairy village :) I have made elves, but not trolls or dwarves yet. I have tutorials for elves on a candy cane and on a Xmas bauble, I also have a witch, and maybe other things I can't remember now ^_^ I would love to make trolls and anything that's fantasy related, I love it! If you need any help with your hobbit house, just ask. And please let me know how it turns out :)

      Thank you! I referred to a picture of the detail on the inside of the door, the black iron hinges because they are very intricate and I wanted to get them just right, but not for the rest really. I do look at pictures before I start when I plan a project, either for reference or inspiration, but not during because I can't keep touching my computer for it to turn on again ^_^ I might have to if I don't know a project well enough, like a Pokemon character for example, because it's not something I'm interested in. A hobbit house was something too familiar to me ^_^

    You can use corn startch instead of talcom powder and it will also keep your clay from burning.
