Well, you know what they say... A person without memoires is a person with no life. This guy was a part of one of the truly great live bands of all time, anybody who ever saw them understands what I am talking about. Wish I could explain it in a few sentences but they were a live phenomenon that defies a hurried narrative.

You got THAT right, Mike. Saw these guys first in 1970 opening for Traffic and Mountain. They absolutely stole the show. Half the crowd was gone during "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" Saw them more than any other band over the years. Full House captures the magic that was their live shows.

Got chills watching this. They were my 1st ever concert attended, December '72 touring behind Live Full House@the Palladium, NYC. Off the sheer adrenaline rush of that 1st show started a run of over 1,400 concerts attended since so their influence on my lifetime, musical or otherwise, is simply immeasurable. RIP John Geils and Long Live the J. Geils Band, I'm beyond gutted and have been in tears since last night.

My first concert when I was 16:
    J. Geils at the Academy Of Music in NYC w/ Frampton's Camel and Slade opening.
Their final encore at 2AM (remember late shows?!) "Serve You Right To Suffer". Rafters and seats shaking, straining to watch Peter Wolf through smoke so thick you could cut it with a knife. I remember thinking that this moment, frozen in time was something I'd remember for the rest of my life, not even caring that I was going to catch hell from my folks when I got home.
It's permanently tattooed in my memory, and yes, my folks grounded me for a month.

    What a legend!
Grew up in Detroit in the 70s and never got to see him and the Great J Geils Band Live......
I remember I had a teenage crush on a gal that I met working at the Burger King at the Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn Mi.about 1978. The BK isn't there anymore.
She LOVED the J Geils Band, her name was Julie.....can't remember her last name.....tall and thin with long medium blonde/brown hair, man she was BEAUTIFUL!!.... I was watching for them to come to Detroit so I could ask her to go see them with me......she quit the Burger King and we lost contact.

How cool. You can tell he has genuine reverence for the pioneers and the guitars they played and he also seems to have a real affinity for Gibson and Epiphone. I had a ES 335 back in the day and my brother had an Epiphone acoustic (can't recall the model) that I could make talk. Such great instruments. And Giels shows flat out rocked! As other commenters have put it, you really had to see them live to appreciate it. The energy they created was unlike anything else I've ever experienced. I am truly blessed to have seen them in their prime.

This shows what I’ve always said. If you don’t respect your roots, learn the tradition you’re working in, and then add to that tradition, your music will be just a flash in the pan. I can’t think of a single musician I respect who doesn’t show a bit of humility towards his predecessors. And btw, John seems like one helluva guy. Like a jazzy Neil Young, maybe?

I bought his (Arlen Roth) ‘hot licks’ Video back when. It’s fantastic but vhs. I was looking for it on TH-cam. He does note for note samples from each of his 3 favorite guys. When I listen to Albert King I don’t hear T-Bone Walker or Charlie Christian. Or BB king for that matter. I hear Albert King. Alberts the king of the blues guitar in my mind. Stevie Ray (in my mind) was a brilliant modern replica of Albert.

Best Show ever was Curtis Hixon Hall, Tampa, Fl December 1972 with Headliners, Humble Pie, J. Geils Band and the Opener none other then JJ Cale, it was a night where the Opening Acts Out Performed the Headliner, not that Humble Pie Didn't Rock the Place. But it was the 1st Time I ever heard of JJ Cale or his Music, and the group I was wanting to see the Most J. Geils Band. This was Many Many decades ago after your 1st album had just hit
