Well, you know what they say... A person without memoires is a person with no life. This guy was a part of one of the truly great live bands of all time, anybody who ever saw them understands what I am talking about. Wish I could explain it in a few sentences but they were a live phenomenon that defies a hurried narrative.

You got THAT right, Mike. Saw these guys first in 1970 opening for Traffic and Mountain. They absolutely stole the show. Half the crowd was gone during "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" Saw them more than any other band over the years. Full House captures the magic that was their live shows.

"Give it to Me" is a lovely bit of funk-rock, and J. Geils spends 75 sec. tearing your face off at the 4 minute mark of it. I've been slapping that up day after day since hearing of his death. Rest in Peace, thanks for the musical energy delivered!

My first concert when I was 16:
    J. Geils at the Academy Of Music in NYC w/ Frampton's Camel and Slade opening.
Their final encore at 2AM (remember late shows?!) "Serve You Right To Suffer". Rafters and seats shaking, straining to watch Peter Wolf through smoke so thick you could cut it with a knife. I remember thinking that this moment, frozen in time was something I'd remember for the rest of my life, not even caring that I was going to catch hell from my folks when I got home.
It's permanently tattooed in my memory, and yes, my folks grounded me for a month.

    What a legend!
Grew up in Detroit in the 70s and never got to see him and the Great J Geils Band Live......
I remember I had a teenage crush on a gal that I met working at the Burger King at the Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn Mi.about 1978. The BK isn't there anymore.
She LOVED the J Geils Band, her name was Julie.....can't remember her last name.....tall and thin with long medium blonde/brown hair, man she was BEAUTIFUL!!.... I was watching for them to come to Detroit so I could ask her to go see them with me......she quit the Burger King and we lost contact.

How cool. You can tell he has genuine reverence for the pioneers and the guitars they played and he also seems to have a real affinity for Gibson and Epiphone. I had a ES 335 back in the day and my brother had an Epiphone acoustic (can't recall the model) that I could make talk. Such great instruments. And Giels shows flat out rocked! As other commenters have put it, you really had to see them live to appreciate it. The energy they created was unlike anything else I've ever experienced. I am truly blessed to have seen them in their prime.

I can’t think of a single musician I respect who doesn’t show a bit of humility towards his predecessors. And btw, John seems like one helluva guy. Like a jazzy Neil Young, maybe?

Saw BB King’s early amp from the Memphis days tight behind him!! What a great life; pity that he left us that soon. RIP Mr. Geils.
