Billy has made this podcast sew interesting as he is learning more about fabric and the fabric industry. It really helps new quilters learn about the history.
That was such a fun podcast! I love how you all interact and cut across each other with memories of things past! Great show and very informative on pre-cuts - I never thought about how much time I spend ironing F/Qs and F/8ths! lol ! 🤣
I see the value of pre-cuts, especially for new quilters. But in 1989, when I made my first quilt, I really enjoyed picking out 12 fabrics, a light, medium, and dark in four color families for a trip around the world quilt. They were my choices and my quilt. When I look at that quilt today, it represents the colors of my soul more than any other quilt I've made since. It was made before color theory classes I took and books on color I've read. I made it before pre-cuts made the color and textural choices for me. Walking around the quilt store with bolts of fabric to choose from is a large part of the joy of quilting for me. I love your podcasts and watch every one of them. You three make a fabulous team! My comments are just food for thought.
OMG My first comment was so premature, even with only about 10 mins to go, Chelsea you are soooooo my people, Purple is my absolute fave and I remember all the random little details like you do A N D I had a kidney stone last year, You are my Girl, Bless your Cotton Socks. 💜💜💜💜💜💜🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I love the digressions! They're what makes your podcast feel so genuine and organic. I enjoy hearing about more than just quilting and I would say it is the "life" part of A Quilting Life. Thanks for being such a bright spot in my week!
Couldn’t agree more. The personalization and memories shared just make us quilters remember our own family and friends history and feel included ! Loved this so much!
I started quilting back in the late 80's. No precuts then, so I have always worked with yardage. Hench the hoarders room filled with like colored scraps(or larger pieces). I guess I love looking at all of the bolts of fabric. I sometimes feel like I love to starch the fabrics. It feels fresh & cuts great.
When I started quilting in the 90s there were no precuts. You would go to the shop and spend hours trying to collect fabric from a bolt deciding what fabric would go with the other. It is so easy now because you have the whole fabric line in a bundle. This brings back memories for me!
I enjoy all parts of your podcast! Family stories are always so fun to hear and all the quilting experiences. I so look forward to your podcast and wish it happened weekly. It's like spending time with friends that I really truly like. So cool how Billy has gotten so involved. Now I am craving a milkshake and fries...will be my lunch today after a trip to my local quilt shop! See you in a couple weeks!
Your discussion of all the precuts had information that even seasoned quilters may not have known. Certainly was a beneficial chat. Your three-way conversations are always fun to listen to! And I agree, Chelsea! I always have to be trim and straighten the FQ edges after ironing. And you are absolutely correct - I have sewn for almost 60 years, and the precuts revolutionized how we buy fabric .... and they make shopping so much more fun!!
I remember when precuts entered the market and I thought to myself, "Whoever thought of this, was a genius!" It made everything so much easier for a quilter for all the reasons stated: you didn't have to think, all the fabric matched, you had some of every fabric, and you usually could find a pattern. About the same time, the books and magazines started responding to the need in the market for patterns because they came in abundance! It was wonderful! And yes, there were some failures. The triangles were called sweet rolls or something similar. Great video! Took me back in time. 😂
Oh my, you guys are just so much fun 😊😊 I could listen all day!!! The Stanley cup story was hilarious 🤣🤣 If Billy wouldn't have pointed out ahead of time that both ladies had a Stanley "cup"/tumbler I would have been confused. I'd never heard of that brand tumbler before.
Great podcast and love the trips down memory lane. So nice to be included in your memories. Precuts have definitely made it more convenient, time saving and enjoyable for quilters. I also feel it has been of great benefit for the industry and designers. Quilters are more likely to buy and buy when they can hold in their hot little hands - the entire collection - 👏👏👏 great marketing move and my stash is proof 🤣😍
Sherri, Thank you for coming to our Peach Days Quilt Show! It was awesome to have you here. We enjoyed seeing all your quilts and patterns. So glad that you found the Peach City Drive-in/Restaurant and enjoyed a peach shake!
You three are so much fun, I have my hot cocoa and feel I am sitting with you at the table listening to a good friend❤️love every thing you do and I can only dream of doing more of your patterns. Your the best and education on a wide range of ideas of quilting, reading, and self improvement, do enjoy your guests and viewers questions, your Saturday Sampler I never miss!
Precuts are about as old as Missouri Star Quilt Co. I watched their video of how they got started and it just quilting and then the tutorials and folks wanted her fabrics. Stocking bolts is expensive and it was the precuts that got them started in fabric sales and it took off for them.
Chelsi, at least you had a bedroom! I slept in the master bedroom walk in closet in a 2 bedroom apartment so I could have my own “space”. My dad got up early so the sofa wasn’t a great place when he started turning on lights in the kitchen. 😂
YES! This was absolutely a FUN podcast! Thank you all! The family stories are always heart warming. The quilts are gorgeous! Great job, Billy, on the topics you come up with!
I LOVE Jolly Bars! With inexpensive background fabric you get a useful sized throw. If I want/need it bigger I can get some fabric and add a border. Now, I very rarely can afford a fat quarter bundle. I have to really love a line and have a definite plan for a quilt to save up for a fat quarter bundle.
I am so sad I missed seeing Sherri at Peach Days! They also have a huge car show on Saturday that will entertain your family! Hopefully you are at another event in Northern Utah soon so I can come! I’ll pay close attention from now on!
I have only been quilting 1 1/2 years and always use the exact same fabric as the pattern. Doing the Regal Pine from my stash took me out of my comfort zone but I LOVED how it turned out, glad you liked it also.
If one was a new quilter and wanted to have fun and experience, it has to be a charm pack. The finished piece maybe small, but you get variety and a end product without the big expense. In the end a beginner can decide if they want to continue and broaden their scope for quilting. Thanks for sharing your views on precuts. 👍❤️😊
A charm pack is the first precut I ever had and happened upon one at a thirft store brand new and I made the charm pack quilted stocking pattern from MSQC and its always been my favorite cut. Fat eights are pretty fun too!
Sherri, one of my long-term quilt projects is your Nine-Patch Square Dance pattern. Your pattern calls for 2 matching Honeybuns and 1 matching Charm Pack plus background. I am actually using one Layer Cake, Solana by Robin Pickens, with scrappy backgrounds. My blocks are coming out so cute. Layer Cakes are my go to pre-cut. One layer cake equals 4 charm packs or 2 Jolly Bars or 160 2 1/2” X 10” strips or any combination of cuts but those three are the ones I use the most. And I agree with Chelsi no ironing. Thanks for another great podcast.
I have been quilting since the 1970's and I think another reason the precuts are so popular is that you know the fabric colors and patterns are going to go together because a designer designed them. I used to spend hours in the quilt shop trying to imagine my quilt done in the available patterns and colors. It was very intimidating.
Really enjoyable podcast! I do love fat quarter bundles because they are more versatile, but if I was on a budget then the layer cake because you can still make a sizable quilt❤
I showed my local Quilt Shop Web Fabrics your finished Regal Pines in Ombré They loved it and asked about the pattern, so I gave your name Chelsi Stratton Designs. 😊
One of the very best, Billy!!! Not just the topic, but for the conversations it sparked. And let me say, my heart skipped a beat when you announced a home tour for the holidays!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻❤️💫
I really enjoyed today's episode and am really looking forward to both of your Christmas home tours. Hot fries with a chocolate shake is one of my favorites:)
I began quilting in 1995 and started collection 30's prints. I don't remember buying actual fat quarter bundles, but I do remember buying fat quarter pieces of all the collection as they were released. I probable have maybe 1200 different pieces of them now. Have not purchased many in the last decade or so. But love the cut.
As a relatively new quilter, pre-cuts and bundles really take the guesswork out of matching fabrics. It removes all the uncertainty of wandering multiple times around a quilt shop pulling bolts. You're just guaranteed they're all going to go together beautifully!! Not that I don't still wander around the quilt shop multiple times, but now it's just for fun! 😆
I've had those peach shakes. Used to go to Brigham City with my aunt. Summer, we try to get a few of the peach shakes from Chick-fil-A, which are not the same, but still very good. I love the fat eighths, as way less money than the fat quarters, so I can get all the fabrics in the line, and make more quilts. I recently made a house quilt out of a layer cake, and loved cutting it out, way easy.
My first fat quarter bundle was Seashore Drive and I still haven't broke into it. I did break into my Emma bundle last week. I did break into my fat eighth bundle of favorite things to make Little Houses. I started my obsession with precuts on charm packs and mini charms. I love making my 1 inch hexies for grandmother's flower garden with mini charms.
I finally made it to Minute Maid Park yesterday to see my first baseball game against Kansas City Totals, last home game for the regular season. Did you make it to Minute Maid Chelsi? Today we play the Mariners today in Seattle.
Great Podcast…. I think a very important thing about the pre cuts is - what a money saver they are. It helps A Lot to be able to get the whole collect and the precut package makes that extremely affordable.
I always enjoy your podcasts, but this one had me in tears from laughing so hard about THE Stanley cup! I heard that first thing this morn, but am just now finishing the podcast. Not only is my fabric in bits and pieces but so is my life. LOL
Something I find helpful when working with patterns is a diagram showing how to cut from the precut. For example if it's a fat quarter if you cut it the wrong direction you might not have enough for all the cuts you need to make the block.
In UK the fabric is measured in metres so a fat quarter,or fat 1/8th is larger, but all the othets are the same as Moda named them, though I think other makers call them something else.thankyou for a great chat.
I have a love/hate relationship with pre-cuts. I love fat quarters because I prefer to work with pre-washed fabrics (unwashed fabrics make me sneeze). But, I do like charm packs and have bought a lot of them for patterns written for charm packs with an accent fabric and background added. I do wash the accent and background even though I know there could be different amounts of shrinkage. I hope that because I tend to quilt my quilts to death since buying a longarm...it won't be an issue to have washed and unwashed fabrics together. I also have bought jelly rolls and layer cakes because it is wonderful to get the entire line in a pre-cut. I am a 30+ year quilter and have bought quilt shop fabric that shrunk 4" in width...found that out when I didn't have enough fabric for my quilt. Luckily I hadn't procrastinated cutting it out and the shop still had the fabric! I compared the new fabric with the fabric I had bought about 2 weeks prior and could hardly believe my eyes!! Additionally I tend to purchase pre-cuts that don't have colors that are likely to bleed...but thank goodness for color catchers!
I went to Peach Days and to the quilt show! I’ve gone to the parade and car show for years and years. My first year at the quilt show! I wish I could have seen you! Also, I like Billy, the first time I heard of the Stanley cup was at work and thought of the hockey cup and not a drinking tumbler!😂 Now I own two Stanley tumbler cups! They are the absolute best! I love all the precuts out there! I even have some of the hexagons from Moda. They are a bit more difficult to work with, so I haven’t finished anything with them yet! But there will be time for that! I think another reason new quilters love precuts is because they don’t have to match anything! It can feel a little intimidating when you are just starting out to find things that match each other! I think that is why I didn’t quilt a lot when I first started! Now that I have been doing it for almost 20 years I feel I am better at matching things that aren’t all from the same line! But that wasn’t instinctive for me.
you guys are making me thirsty talking about your stanley cups.... I rushed out the door this morning and forgot to grab my yeti straw lid that I switch to after my coffee is done so I'm thirsty lol. I got some water in a regular glass but I miss my straw!!!
Very nice podcast today❤ I usually use fat quarters and layer cakes for the quilts I’m working on. Still learning about the process of figuring out how much fabric for each project and how much fabric that can fit in a yard. I really love the variety of fat quarters so not spending so much on yardage to make a quilt. Looking forward to the home tours!
I believe that in the past Moda did the 5” x WOF precut which they called a Dessert Roll. I noticed too that Moda brought it back for a few collections. I think they also used to do a triangular precut called a Turnover.
The Stanley cup story is so funny! Absolutely hilarious! I could not stop laughing.
We love the extra stories and the digressions. Never apologize for them that they are what makes your podcast stand out.
Yeah...about Jane Austen, or craft...
Not the endless milking of golf stories
(golf is "a good walk spoiled". I'd rather hear about a good walk)
Billy has made this podcast sew interesting as he is learning more about fabric and the fabric industry. It really helps new quilters learn about the history.

Enjoyed this episode. Loved Chelsea's childhood memories ❤️. Although I do periodically purchase precuts, I love yardage.

Plus rotary cutting changed the “quilting world “ ❤ ❤❤

fantastic😮😮
Absolutely love today’s video. Lots of fun talk.
This was really fun today! Love all the family stories and lots of info on precuts.
Moda used to offer triangle pieces in a bundle that were called a Turnover. I have two in my stash☺️

Thank you so much Mary!
The 5”xWOF roll is called a Dessert Roll and don’t forget junior jelly rolls. Great episode.
I have a few in solids…..from way back
Hello friend 🥀
I think it is great that the bundles all coordinate more than the cutting.
Hello from Qaqortoq, Greenland. I have really enjoyed watching y'all every week! :) :) You're quilts are so beautiful!
Hello pretty 👋 how are you today?

Fabulous show!!!! You should see if Stanley would sponsor you guys. I think a lot of us would buy a few.
Sherri, Thank you for coming to our Peach Days Quilt Show! It was awesome to have you here. We enjoyed seeing all your quilts and patterns. So glad that you found the Peach City Drive-in/Restaurant and enjoyed a peach shake!

OMG - I LOVE Fries & Ice cream - best is a hot fudge sundae, with crushed peanuts and fries fresh out of the fryer - so good!
Fantastic episode & I love the digressions!!!
I love your designs and patterns. Strawberry Lemonade and the slice pattern are awesome
Love this episode❤ Chelsi your to funny & cute how you describe life memories.
I love ironing! It gives me a chance to stand and move about when quilting. I love how the pressed fabric looks!
Next to cutting its my favorite 🩷
Billy, you have to keep on your toes to keep those two women on track 😂. Good job.
Thank you for the Stanley cup story! Made me laugh out loud which is always a blessing!
Wonderful episode today! I just love your whole family, thank you so much😁😁❤️❤️
Today's episode was really fun. Chelsea you have a great memory.
Thanks for brightening my day! Y’all are all so cute! I am ashamed to say I knew nothing about a Stanley drinking cup. Loved the story.
Looks like my yeti which is awesome cup/ranbler👍
Precuts are about as old as Missouri Star Quilt Co. I watched their video of how they got started and it just quilting and then the tutorials and folks wanted her fabrics. Stocking bolts is expensive and it was the precuts that got them started in fabric sales and it took off for them.
oooooo - I registered for the 2024 make a wish QAL - so excited to get that started, and it starts on my bday month 🤩
Hey Billy! What about the quilt behind you over your left shoulder? Thanks!!!
Love Fat Quarter Shop Jolly Bars. Getting ready to make your Favorite Things Jolly Bar, very similar to the Regal Pines.
I LOVE Jolly Bars! With inexpensive background fabric you get a useful sized throw. If I want/need it bigger I can get some fabric and add a border. Really enjoyable podcast! I do love fat quarter bundles because they are more versatile, but if I was on a budget then the layer cake because you can still make a sizable quilt❤
Loved the information that you shared!!
That being said, I fell in love with one of your fabric lines last year and bought a fat quarter bundle, a layer cake, and a charm pack of it!
Chelsi, I made your Hello Fall quilt with a layer cake and I love how it turned out!
Send Billy a picture Brook!
The names for fabric sizes are Moda names. Other companies have some different names.
Fantastic show! Brought memories of my first quilt and how quilting has changed. I think pre cuts have mad it easier to acquire a huge stash..😂
Hello pretty friend 👋. Nice write😊😊
Great episode!
Best discussion ever, thank you for cheering me up and the giggle!!! This is what quilting should be about lol!!! 🇬🇧
Quilting fabric is much more fun than puzzles. I have always thought that!! Productive fun!!
Beautiful quilts❤
We sure missed seeing Chelsi up here in town. We can’t wait to see you at Market soon! I’m counting down the days.
I’ve watched every single episode and this was the funnest! Thanks for sharing!
Omg I had to go look up the Stanley’s cups. Here in texas every has a yeti. But I have the H‑E‑B brand KODI it is our local grocery store brand
I’ve heard the 5” square as nickel pack
I! Got to see your trunk show. It wS awesome.
Fun podcast! I like the layer cake best. I appreciate when you announce what is an applicable precut when introducing your patterns.
Precuts are great for us that don’t know how to match up fabrics. They are also very hard to cut into.
Love your podcast! Loved this episode!❤
I really enjoyed this podcast. Your patterns and tips are awesome. The digression makes me feel like I am among friends. Thanks for all you do.
Chelsea your cup would be a great background for stickers📍
Great Podcast…. I think a very important thing about the pre cuts is - what a money saver they are. It helps A Lot to be able to get the whole collect and the precut package makes that extremely affordable.
I see now 5 inch rolls too!! Love the quilts ❤
I like all the precuts! I probably use the charm packs the least. Fun podcast!
I really like the Fat Eighth patterns as those bundles of fabric are more affordable than Fat Quarters
Also precuts have made quilts more beautiful bc less user error when picking fabrics.
Just preordered Monnbeams QAL from FQS🎉
It is so nice that patterns are written for precuts now. They were only written for yardage before.
In UK the fabric is measured in metres so a fat quarter,or fat 1/8th is larger, but all the othets are the same as Moda named them, though I think other makers call them something else.thankyou for a great chat.
My mind went to the golfing Stanley cup too!!
I have a love/hate relationship with pre-cuts. I love fat quarters because I prefer to work with pre-washed fabrics (unwashed fabrics make me sneeze). Additionally I tend to purchase pre-cuts that don't have colors that are likely to bleed...but thank goodness for color catchers!
Loved todays podcast y'all did a grat job answering so many questions! Loved the stories that went with them. Love y'all ❤️
I went to Peach Days and to the quilt show!
Now that I have been doing it for almost 20 years I feel I am better at matching things that aren’t all from the same line! But that wasn’t instinctive for me.
My first FQ bundle was yours Sincerely yours, and I got it on sale at MSQC and I have yet to use it! It's to pretty to use 🙂🙂❤️
you guys are making me thirsty talking about your stanley cups....

Great pocast!
5” x WOF strips are called Dessert Rolls. But, bug in Moda’s ear…..that would be an awesome pre cut to add to all lines of fabric.
Isn’t the 5” Wof a Dessert Roll? I remember a quilt book of patterns for them.
