- Fears are growing in Uganda of an escalating crackdown on dissent. In just the past few months, opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been charged with treason, his lawyer was imprisoned, and several activists have been arrested for criticizing the government online. DW correspondent Julius Mugambwa has more from Kampala, on what critics are calling a dangerous new phase of repression.

I’m glad to see real Ugandans in the comments sections and not the usal kagame and moussevini bots
They haven't seen the story. Wait tomorrow when they return to their offices from the weekend. You will see their comments😂
@@larrytamale2527 well stated, they are going to storm the channel with their longlive m7 rants. But the heavens are not asleep, their fate will soon surface. Let's keep praying 🙏 🙏
Well said, I hate those bots .
Soon time will tell

Permission to demonstrate? Then you're totally admitting that there's no freedom of speech🤷♀️
This is what happens when a country is ruled by a dictator
What dictator?
@@CharlesOdochthe one in power
This happens because Ugandans gave out there country and waiting for whites or foreign powers to come help
@@CharlesOdoch Yoweri Museveni
The man who has been the president of Uganda since 1986.
So tell us the name of the opposition leader of North Korea.
I stand with Ugandan people that love freedom of speech! Stand up for your right!!!
There is no need to "request permission" to exercise a right. That's why they are called "rights".
"Rights" do not come from the government.
Governments that deny rights quickly lose the consent of the governed.. and rightly so.
They are about to tell Ugandans to request a permission to sneeze.
Clearly you are to biased to even reason. How about the rights of the people whose businesses are affected by the protesters. Are the protesters peaceful?
@KennethKitamirike
Where is the Universal Declaration of Corporate Rights published?
We all that but how have you exercised your right. Most Ugandans don't know about the 3Rs and so they continue breaking laws day by day😮
@edisonagaba9538
Politicians break laws everyday, so forgive me if I fail to see your point.
The coming of Ruto in Kenya made Kenya another Uganda where state repression is a new normal.
In England you can get jail time for free speech.
Why is it South African politicians were so keen to take Israeli Netanyahu to ICC but silent here?!
Exactly, in mozambique we faced critical humans rights violation during post elections demonstrations. But SA leaders were helping the Dictatorship of FRELIMO. It's a shame honestly😪
You can't compare the Holocaust happening is Palestine with anything thing
Apparently the SA gov't will have to take over 20 gov'ts to the ICJ🤔
Silent where? It's definitely because they can see through your tribalism.
Hypocrisy , south Africa is also silent about sudan war
Im extremely saddened to know that he was abducted in my own native Kenya.
That we are in cahoots with this rogue Ugandan regime.
Am a Ugandan but it's hot here, the dictator is killing everyone who doesn't want him

Every right has a responsibility.
In Uganda there is a law called Public Order Management Act.
According to the constitution, we Ugandans have the right to demonstrate when we are not happy with the way we are being governed etc. As long as it’s peaceful. This just proves suppression of freedom of expression
But Museveni critizes freely some western Prime Ministers which is his freedom of speech rights so why his own citizens cannot exercise the same???

Seeking permission from the police to demonstrate, when have they ever approved a demonstration. Very clear there is no right to demonstrate under dictatorship, don't mince words.
These are western actors. They want ugandas minerals
Ssegirinya's ailments were very manageable, not until they framed him of crimes and he was denied bail even after the government doctor had warned the government about his deteriorating health status.
As a ugandan i feel sad for our country
I am a Ugandan girl but I live in the 🇬🇧 UK

I think uganda has the right to punish or jail those who broke the law like any other country. Despite what intl Western supported say or do.
Get rid of the dictator Museveni
The history of Uganda and Rwanda is horrific
Elaborate
I'm in Uganda and we are comfortable. Stop inciting violence
That's our Uganda it's becoming scary every passing day😢😢
Then go to Heaven 🎉
I think our only hope in Uganda to remove the dictator M7 is divine intervention 🙏🙏
In Germany you cannot demonstrate without permission. You are required to register your demonstration with the authorities not just show up somewhere and start a demonstration. So why is it criticised here if they are being told to seek permission.
You may be true but the German gov't does not use that to suppress/crush any opposing voices.
We gave up on freedom of speech and fair elections.
What kind of dumb question is this? Dissent is not allowed in Uganda. That's why one president has been ruling the country for at least forty years.
Never fear. The UK Conservative Party passed a law saying Rwanda is "absolutely safe" and you can go to jail for disagreeing.
.
This video is about UGANDA not Rwanda. Can you even read? Or hear?
Totally ignorant lol
Museveni has never killed nobody? You said he is a minister🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is absurd
That guy with his Kenyan counterpart have only one thing in common
so now you guys have opened your eyes hehe kenya 2050 we will be here
Ruto is learning from Museveni
Museveni is loved. Get over it.
And these demonstrations are not appreciated
lets talk about that guy jailed for six years and exactly what led to his jailing madam Agatha
I am glad that I am from a country that do not interfer with citizens freedom of speech. Rights have not to be taken for granted.
I love my beautiful country Uganda. God bless president Museveni.
This is getting worse. Arresting Besigye got them the global attention they wanted.
Hey DW u forgot to mention that he was arrested in Kenyan Territory and sent to Uganda to face a kangaroo court.
Agatha is self seeking, the whole world knows her accept DW apparently.
She an attention seeker 😂😂😂
Atleast she is speaking for the oppressed, prove her wrong with evidence
Those are the signs of falling leaders. Ugandans have had the worst leadership in these 39 years
In Uganda human rights commission is serving the president. Also freedom of speech sometimes might exist, but freedom after speech doesn’t exist.
public management act section 5 says one should inform the police but not seeking permission. Hon-Minister Knows nothing about the law.
Extra judicial killings happen in Kampala in broad daylight
When Uganda has been free
What democrats tried in America
Yeah, that makes no sense.
Pray for Ugandan Knuckles🙏🙏🙏
If only Trump could stop wasting US taxpayer $ on funding dictators in Africa particularly in Uganda, then we can truly work towards democracy. Otherwise, we will not stop seeing oppression in East and Central Africa. Museveni alone is causing mayhem in not only Uganda but also Congo and surrounding countries. And his son wants to take over from him.
Here in uganda we love museveni
Uganda is almost as bad the United Kingdom under Starmer.
Too much freedom in uganda is the problem

Imagine asking for permission to exercise your right 😢!
This isn't new! Museveni's regime carrying on as other heinous dictatorships everywhere; brutal, tribal, divisive, and corrupt!
I think Kenya needs to be the focal point...as for Agatha...hmmmm let me not comment coz many inconsistencies.....she is simply a PR tool for NRM to portray fairness

Please talk about the NUP political prisoners detained in hundreds.
How do you seek permission to demonstrate?….
This regime only has a matter of time. Challenge is taking us down the path as it happened in Libya
Correction he has ruled now, over 40yrs…Balamu the puppet
Ruto is messing up big time. What happens when those respective people abducted become leaders im their respective governments, where will it leave Kenya and Kenyans?
Im sorry but no one is gonna want to be criticised.
Why? How can one better themselves without constructive critism
@ that’s what I mean in the video the minister of public services said you need permission to criticise but no one wants to be criticised.
If u hate public criticism then stay out of public office it's that simple
@ I don’t hate public criticism I’m just saying if you have to ask for permission 90% of the time the answer I no personally you can criticise me all you want
Tough times Uganda
What does he mean dobe nothing to you?
Why demonstrate but first ask for permission what can be demonstrated sounds like no free speech
Ruto must go I wish Kenyan could stand together not go to those corrupt campaign and work hard to stamp out corruption. People that attend this corrupt office rallies are poor. I wish they could understand that the little money they are give won’t change their lives. We need to fight for our future

That clip looks acted
It will happen in India very soon ?
And the U.S. !
Museveni is in good company, Trump. He might be invited to Washington and welcomed with full military honors.
Biden and Obama did nothing. They all care about their country and what benefits the Americans.
This is not new
That civilian you're talking about, Kizza was a high ranking army officer in the army and personal doctor to Museveni the president
He retired many years,he is a civilian now
He retired from the army over 20 yrs ago. That is why he was a presidential candidate in 2001.
