  • Live off the land. Making the rows with a one tire plow, water with solar power pump. I am planting my winter garden next to my fall and winter garden. There is always something fresh to eat year round. Be self-sufficient.

One thing I've learned in 50 years of gardening is don't broadcast chemical fertilizer. You are salting the soil and will kill it. I did that at one time and within 3 years had a dead garden. If you have plenty of water you may get away with it a bit longer but If your water supply is limited DON'T DO IT! If you feel you need to use a bit of chemical fert keep it right in the root zone of the plant. Pop a bit in the hole when you plant or a bit around the plant under the drip line. Needless to say the ideal is NO chemicals.

Mark, your seedlings here look nice and strong, but I thought to share that I have learned to take seedlings with fragile roots, put them in a shallow pan of water (about 4") and swishing the a little to let the soil fall away. It hydrates them, plus I have the root system exposed to detangle. Best for onion seedlings so no roots break,. This method lets you handle transplants when they're younger if you need to.

Why do farmers plant on the raised part of a row rather than the sunken part? Seems to me planting in the sunken part would allow for the plant to receive more water if it was in the sunken part as opposed to the raised part where water can run off. Would be much easier to water, too and less water waste.

Correct me if i'm wrong but it looks like your plow needs a smaller angle of attack. Soil piles up quickly, but doesn't remove itself so.

You've just shown that fancy new equipment is not essential to a good garden! Nice looking friable soil you have. Cats and blackbirds seem to love digging up my seedlings!
You made an interesting point about how our pioneering forebears would have appreciated a power hoe; I too have had similar thoughts. I'd love to have been able to give my great great grandfather a Lister (or similar) diesel engine to power various implements, a chainsaw and a rotary hoe! Col, Bay of Islands, NZ.

I use landscape weed barrier fabric (special fabric I buy it at Home Depot) and cover all the area and let only the plants come out. This allows water to go through but it blocks the weed to come out. It is synthetic - it can not rotten.
      See as an example here:
      www.homedepot.com/b/Outdoors-Garden-Center-Landscaping-Weed-Barrier-Underlayment/N-5yc1vZbx4q
Play the video (in the picture). It show sit for planting flowers but it is the same for vegetables.
I go for a whole year weed sfree and then I roll it and reuse it next year.

That's a cool little machine, but the soil is sticking cause of all the rust, you need to sand it, make in nice and smooth/polish (weld them holes up too) then it will till a lot better and won't gum up as much. It could be modified into a furrower tool (double till, potato till) like this th-cam.com/video/lhyPIsGLtHM/w-d-xo.html and you could do two runs in one.
