The Shire

  • THE PENSIVE SETTING of the Shire/Hobbit theme is heard the first time we see Hobbiton. If the Hymn Setting is used for times when a Hobbit is feeling a intensely strong emotion toward the Shire (or a thing or person from the Shire), then the Pensive Setting, I think, conveys affectionate feelings toward the same.
THE RURAL SETTING of the Shire/Hobbit Theme is, as Shore says, "more for Hobbiton." I, in fact, previously called this the Hobbiton Theme. It is folkier than the Pensive Setting but just as melodic. It makes strong use of the Hobbit Accompaniments. This music is most often played with folk instruments: bodhrán, whistle, fiddle, dulcimer, guitar, mandolin, folk harp, musette, and celesta.
THE HYMN SETTING of the Shire theme pairs the familiar melody of "In Dreams" with slow, chord-like notes. It "grieves the hobbits' loss of innocence as it celebrates their resolve in the face of adversity." To me, the scenes with this music are ones in which a Hobbit's love for the Shire--or for the things or people of the Shire--is particularly strong. It is, however, only used for Frodo and Sam, not Merry and Pippin. When the feelings are more simple affection, the Pensive Setting seems to be used.
HOBBIT OUTLINE - This 4 note motif represents "the hobbits' playful side. It's used as "an expectation of the next thing coming."" (Doug Adams, CR-FOTR liner notes, page 13)
HOBBIT TWO STEP - Even thought this is a 'two note' figure, it often has an 'om pa pa' feel to it. An initial, first beat anchors the measure. Then the two notes of the Two Step play on beats 2 and 3 and there's a pause on beat 4. When played alone, it is usually be repeated three times and then the Hobbit Skip Beat is heard. But it's also heard under other music, most notably, the Rural Setting of the Shire Theme.
HOBBIT SKIP BEAT - This little phrase is often heard mixed in with the Hobbit Two Step Figure. The notes are derived from the outline with the first note dropped. Then it's played at double speed on the upbeat. It can be heard as a prominent figure, or as a quiet ostinato underneath other music, most notably, the Rural Setting of the Shire Theme.
HOBBIT END CAP - this is a two beat finale (with grace notes) to the Hobbit Two Step Figure (although I can hear something very similar to the notes DA referenced in the CR-FOTR liner notes at times not connected with the Hobbit Two-Step Figure.)
A HOBBIT'S UNDERSTANDING is not a separate setting of the Shire/Hobbit Theme, "(i)t's more developmental bridging crossing portions of the Pensive, Folk, and Hymn Settings, but complicating them with extended melodic lines and realigned rhythms." (Doug Adams, CR-FOTR liner notes, page 11-12) This more complicated music crops up when the Hobbits' life become a little more complicated, when they have to move beyond their simpler view and understanding of the world.
    • Ringbearer
"IN DREAMS" - This is the song, sung by boy soprano Edward Ross, that is heard during the FOTR end credits. It is a strong example of the most predominant melody used in association with the Shire and the Hobbits. For more information, see The Music of the LOTR Books.
SHIRE REBORN - This Fourth Age theme and final statement of Shire music is heard as Sam says to Rosie, 'Well, I'm back'. The Shire theme retains but has matured beyond its original "In Dreams" melody. The Hobbit Outline, also matured from staccato and sprightly to deliberate and sober, joins in before "The End".

If only nature wasn’t such a beast. Farming is very hard with Shire level technology. Drought comes, winds topple, Winter freezes. You could say the Shire has an easier climate since it is imaginary, but in the real world, an advanced industrialized tech world is pretty good. We just have to get our meaning crisis figured out. How to not be depressed and selfish in our American wealth, but how to be motivated and keep working hard. How to work with others and help others in and out of the developed world.

J.R.R. Tolkien first started penning down thoughts of what would become The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings when sitting in trenches and hospitals during the first World War. He's often quoted as saying that the war didn't inspire him to write the novels, but having been overseas myself I believe sub-consciously it gave him many ideas. Especially in regards to the mechanizations of the nations involved; and in Germany's case...extreme industrialism at the cost of people's freedom and mere existence.

I believe that when you die, you wake up under the party tree in the Shire and you smell the strawberries and feel the wind that gently flows over the green fields and you see hobbits everywhere, smiling and laughing, enjoying the simple life. When I'm a father, I'll tell my kids about this lovely story. And this is how I'd begin:
"My dear boy, I think it is time for you to know the real story of Hobbitton.
About a Hobbit who lived in a hole. Not a nasty, dirty wet hole, full of worms and oozy smells. No, this was a Hobbit hole. And that means; Good food, a warm hearth, and all the comforts of home. And it wasn't great powers that held the evil in check, you know."
    "It wasn't?"
"Certainly not. No, it is the small daily deeds of ordinary people that can hold evil in check. Acts out of kindness and love. Why are Hobbits my favourite characters? Well, perhaps it's because I was afraid...and they gave me courage."
EDIT: After 4 years, it's heartwarming to see such kind replies. Thank you all to whom it matters.

Someday, when I retire from the military and take my pension, I'm going to find a rural field just like the shire and buy a spot of land on it with a mound. And I am going to dig into it and build my own hobbit hole, complete with the fence and garden and circular door. Then I am going to spend the rest of my days enjoying second breakfast and smoking on a pipe by my garden and writing about my adventures. That will be my reward for a lifetime of hardship and conflict. The Shire is my heaven on earth😊.

Me too, mate. I just wonder if there will be a bright end to the torment I go through, and if and when that happens, I'll be glad and thankful for TLOTR. ^^ I even am considered an inconsiderate person by my family, but the friends I have are more like to what one thinks of as family than my family. I think it is wrong to assume that one has no empathy. ^^ I even cry to this theme. It's like it's a sense of comfort that I usually only receive from the girlfriend I rarely see (her name is Amber, she lives long distance from me). The thing is, I view a girlfriend as more of a mother figure than an unpaid whore. :) I literally have a sense of home when I listen to this. I wish people would simply be less to mean to me. I mean, even teachers and principals persecute and slander me. Which is why I am daring enough to have a long distance relationship. Plus, my girlfriend likes LOTR just like me. ^^
If women were less of a dominatrix, then the world would be a better place. We need men to be the head of the house, we need men to be the ones to bring order, we need women to be more nurturing and beautiful without losing morality. If we do that, then we'd probably have less crime. You know what I think? Remember the sorority shooting? I think the shooter was trying to convince women that they need to be more nurturing. That'd explain why he said that women were denying him of love. Of course, we can deal with the problem of radical feminism with intellect and not violence. But people are too afraid to face the feminists with intellect. If women would not have gained so much power, who knows? WWII might have been the last war ever fought in the world between humans. Greg Gutfeld has a theory that the reason why the terrorists are fighting us is to expand their oppression of women, likely a response to radical feminists oppressing men. This is the reason we're fighting a many sided fight known as the war on Islamic Terror. They Muslims would have been more tame were it not for radical feminists. ^^ But of course, the radical feminists might try to react to this theory. At least it is better than blaming it on races or religions XD. But yeah, honestly my girlfriend and I prefer for men to be in power. ^^

"In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty hole filled with an oozy smell and the ends of worms, nor yet a dry bare sandy hole with nothing to sit down on or to eat, but a Hobbit-hole. And this means comfort". Live as they lived. Be as they were. Do as they did, and create a future for your children and all others: “It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end… because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing… this shadow. Even darkness must pass.”. Only you can change the story, and you can't close the book before The End. Make your children proud. Make them better than you. Show them that they have something to pass on, as Bilbo, Frodo and Sam did. They're your inspiration-keep JRRT's memory of Middle-Earth alive by living the life we once did when there was more bravery, sunshine and green things in the World, and less noise and nonsense. and fighting Evil was just something to be fought until we won.

My dear Alex, I lived and learned at the feet of my grandparents whose own parents fought the Great War as JRRT and his friends did, and yet they went on to fight the second greater war. They did what they could with what they had, and look what they gave us! I recall the green trees of Sherwood, and the little rivers and streams that ran around. That was my very own Shire forty years ago, and I am glad to have lived in such a place. If you can find your own green land that is filled with love and generosity where everyone is welcome, then you are a very lucky fellow indeed in these times. If not, then pick up JRRT's mighty work and dream of Arda, where we can find what we miss so terribly in these dark days. May a star shine upon your road.

I see strawberries growing on the tops of knoll houses or the polished oak of the cupboard at Bag End. I see a tough pony and nine travelers in the snow, and I see Eagles flying over the mountains.
I see a dark sky filled with ash and rivers of magma surrounding two very kind little hobbits.

This music makes me want to pack a backpack and live in the mountains, away from civilization and distractions. Just me and the wilderness...the whispers of the wind in the trees, and crunch of snow, the plop of fish in a lake. The chirping of birds, scuttling of squirrels, and the howls of wolves and calls of deer. Everything perfect and serene.

When i was younger, i experimented with a very powerful Psychedelic. Unaware of how much I've taken, the trip took me somewhere far and wide. But it became out of control and everything was hellish. But while i was stuck in this demented land being tortured by countless demons, i heard this theme start to play. And everything just went back to normal and life was suddenly green and living. So whenever i hear The Shires theme i just feel this endless joy and happiness, for it has saved me.

I feel like Sam was sort of a symbol for the good and hope in the world, and how he is rewarded with love and peace for being the amazing person that he is. I'm in a factory right now. It's raining outside; cold, dark, and depressing. I work nights so I haven't seen or felt the sunshine in so long. The smoke and chemicals make me cough all the time. Now I'm on medication to control my anxiety. At 29 I sometimes wonder how I got here after college and trying to chase my dream of being a musician. Two things that take me away from all of it are the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and Skyrim. Every time I hear this song I imagine if only for a little while that I'm on a grassy hill over looking the Shire, reading a good book, and taking in the clear sky. Sometimes if I close my eyes and imagine hard enough I can actually smell the fields, the smoke rising out of the chimneys, and hobbit's pipes. I can hear the children playing and the creak of Gandalf's carriage. The food even, I can taste it! I truly believe this will be heaven.

as i always tend to say, the first hobbit movie is even superior to the LOTRs - in a way. the second and the rhird are worse, especially the third seems too "mainstream" kind of fantasy... for that reason i still prefer the LOTRs as a whole. especially the emotional scenes are more intense, i don't remember having feelings as strong as in LOTR when watching rhe Hobbit. it's about equal as awesome, but different.
