I was at that exact lake this summer and only saw one fish (none rising). The 2 lakes above it (both of the same name) are infested with suicidal brookies though. Thanks so much for makig this video; very enjoyable!
Nothing like that first glimpse of a lake that you've just done a strenuous six-hour hike to get to. Especially after thinking several times that it's finally just a couple of hundred yards away - and discovering it's not. Great work, Jim. You are seriously good at this, bro. Keep it up.
Thanks! I had it blast. It wasn't my first Golden, only my first in the Emigrant. :D If you're interested in Goldens, poke around on the channel a bit. Most of the videos don't mention Golden Trout in the title but there are plenty here. Enjoy!
@@highcountrychronicles nice will do! I have a fun video on my channel of when i went up to Lewis lakes with my family last summer, I wanted to get further in for the Goldens, but their ambition wasn’t as high. I’ll have to try again.
Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, lots of good camping around Summit Creek. I've even caught rainbow and brook trout in the creek but that was some years ago.
@John Alarcon Practically speaking. Yes. But I'm not sure it has to be that way. They're a subspecies of rainbow and yes, they evolved at high elevation but if the waters are cold enough and free of other trout, they could probably survive lower. I've caught them at ~7,800 on at least two occasions and Little Kern Goldens live @ ~6,500. Off hand I don't know of any lakes below 8,000 where they can be found. But that doesn't mean there aren't a couple.
@John Alarcon Brookies and Rainbows don't spawn at the same time of year, so more likely local adaptation to the stream environment. I've seen rainbows in peaty streams that are almost black. Brookies and Browns do cross breed at times. Speaking of Browns. I once caught a brown in Bear Lake of all places. Now all I see are rainbows and brookies.
I’ve had info on those lakes for several years now and have yet to make the trek for myself. There are at least two other lakes in the emigrant wilderness that I know still have Goldens. Thanks for the awesome video!
Jim Lowe I made my first trip into French canyon earlier this season. The most famous lake on that upper bench produced some nice sized Goldens for me, and I saw a true monster cruiser well over 20”! If you want any first hand info send me a message on Facebook before you go next season.
sweet alpenglow and all around scenery. good seeing u wear an ankle brace I'm thinking of adapting to my hikes I wear low top trail running shoes almost rolled an ankle last week , I feel they are key for those longer hikes
Yeah, I don't even notice them once I'm hiking. I'm not as sure footed as I used to be so they definitely help. I've never been a high top hiking shoe hiker. I have some top of the line Vasque boots from 30 years ago that I wore once and that are sitting basically new, in my closet. I switched over from road running shoes to chukkas for about 10 years when I melted my running shoes beside a fire :D but then moved onto trail running shoes and never looked back.
In the wilderness? Never.... until the most recent trip to Kennedy Lake. (th-cam.com/video/N3ojzzQDvnk/w-d-xo.html) I've had bears come through camp before while I've been in my tent or walk past as I bivy and even come up behind me and take a crap but never walked up on one until this year. He was pretty far away, we watched for a while and then alerted him and he took off (th-cam.com/video/N3ojzzQDvnk/w-d-xo.html). I don't typically carry anything. They're Black Bears and statistically speaking, more likely to run than anything else. That said, when I know I'm in a very densely populated bear area (like the Devil's Postpile area) I will carry bear spray..... mostly... sometimes.... In Brown Bear habitat I ALWAYS have bear spray.
Thanks! No, I haven't. Before the lockdown I'd been planning a visit to their San Francisco store but I don't even know if it's open now. About time for me to start wearing the hoodie again.
Jim Lowe Alright! They are one of my favorite clothing line’s for outdoors. If you are thinking of getting something new let me know, I might be able to help. Keep up the good videos!
Trailhead was Kennedy Meadows? What is the name of the lake that you caught the golden trout. The only Lake that I know that has golden trout is Mary's Lake that's next to Tower Peak.

I love it , looks like you started at Kennedy and hiked past Relief . Summit Creek is my favorite camping spot 😃

So many lakes, so little time. Next year I’ll likely give the Emigrant a rest and hit French Canyon......

@@phishndad I should have gone decades ago....... I've had the trip planned out for soooooo long..... I'm taking the hard way in, out of Bishop. LOL.
Jim Lowe sounds like you are taking the same route I did. First 3-4 miles is straight up. Took me about almost 7 hours of hiking to reach that lake.
@@phishndad Good to know. I'm planning to hit an off trail Lahontan lake on the way in. Hopefully that will break things up a bit.
Looks great!

Hi, I mention the lake basin in the video. I'm not going to add it to the comments though. It's a pretty easy google search however. Thanks.
