I've randomly played against Saffron on the ladder a couple different times, and one time after when I looked at the VODs it was on the stream. He was playing some esper deck with almost no counterspells, and I was testing Obscura Interceptor (this was right around when Streets was released). My entire deck was pretty much instant speed, but I kept casting it all sorcery because I was scared of him having counters, and on the VOD he's like, wow this opponent with a deck full of instants * really * likes casting things at sorcery speed. LOL!
I feel like 90% of the time the trumpeting Dino is the best pick for what to put onto the battlefield. It gives you immediate value with the discover while also hitting in for 7 and it gets the Dino out of exile for future crafts.
Yeah the first game I was confused why that wasn’t his choice considering the only thing to worry about was an edict effect with no other creatures out which this would make 2 and then what happens…..edict.
90% of the time I've been finding it's thrillseeker. I've been running a more creature heavy version of this since launch and the amount of times you get to actually hit face then sac the cap for 14 total as a finisher is too good.
@@johnnamkeh1290 I'm running Etali in my version, because who doesn't like saying his name in an Italian accent. Anyway, the point is, it enabled a crazy combo finisher in one game. I had a thrillseeker in hand, dropped it onto the cap, cap attacked and released the Etali, Etali hit another thrillseeker off the top of my deck, counters on Etali, sacced both for lethal!
i know its not in the colors but ghatla and mavren is both a dino and a vampire so it counts for either and also essentially wins the game if you swing with the grim captain, so if its in the grave it become probably the best card to exile with the throne
The first time it shows up its just a 12/12 trample. The extra dinosaurs don't show up until you start the attack with it. though a 12/12 trample is still pretty good.
Technically you could do it with white and green but you'd need a third color for pirates. Blue and red have pirates (technically black but it's only the greedy freebooter), blue has merfolk and pirates, green has dinos and merfolk, red has vampires, pirates, and dinos, black *technically* has pirates, dinosaurs, and vampires. (greedy freebooter, swampcycling dinosaur from this set), and white has vampires and that's about it. I memorized all of them for draft because 90% of the time people don't pick the card because it's so hard to pull of but if you memorize the colors it's super easy.
There were definitely a ton of misplays, but this is pretty new and I'd love to see an update where you figured out not only how to play around things better but also what you need to play around.
Don't forget, Seth, that Ghalta and Mavren is a Dinosaur Vampire. You could slot that in as a bonus and skip out on two types in one go for card slots. Yes, it's more susceptible to graveyard hate, but in a pinch, it works just as well. I personally would use this as an opportunity to play the March of the Machine multi-types.
@@blackgibson302 Hey, lets cut the 6-drops that spins into a second card in favor of a 7-drop that does nothing without a pre-established board, doesn't trigger off of Grim Captain summoning it back, and requires splashing into a 4th color!

Ive been playing a different version of the deck and the 2/1 Pirate in blue that draws an artifact helps me dig for the throne. Also the 3 mana pirate with turn an opponents into a creature has been amazing
Same here! With that pirate you can happily take hands that don't have the throne in it. I'm also playing the merfolk that allows you to flash it in and sac it as a jawari. It got me an easy win against a forge deck just now :D
GGs! (19:02) It was cool to see everyone playing The Grim Captain deck when I didn't really notice the card during spoilers! I was testing mono-green in for standard with some new additions but I don't think I got it quite figured out.
I know Seth does this with half the cards he plays, but hearing Cenote Scout as “See-note” scout all video is still hilarious. (it’s “Seh-no-tay”, like the ground pools)
I feel like negate would be better than make disappear for your counterspell, as creatures aren't really a big deal for this deck unless they're huge (hence negate for the thousand year) Also maybe Tranquil Frillback? Underrated card imo.
Arena should give that "Are you sure?" prompt when people cast flash creatures at sorcery speed. Bonus if they do it at end the turn when a player has a castable flash creature as well.
I've been playing Grixis Grim Captain with Cycling Dinos / Bloodtithe Harvester in a more midrange shell. It's been going well so far - Malcolm is a surprisingly good role player
I've loved playing my own version of this deck since it launched. You have to hold out against a rising onslaught and then bam, solve a puzzle to blow out the game in one turn with overwhelming power, sometimes on turn 4!
I just finished LVD’s Grim Captain video when this popped into my feed; love seeing the difference between these builds! It seems way easier to craft it than I thought it would be
I think some good cards for this deck might be Slip Out the Back and Bitter Reunion. Reunion can help you loot for Grim Captain pieces and then haste him up when you flip the throne. Slip Out the Back can help the Captain dodge board wipes while growing him as a bonus
I feel like the Land cycling dinosaurs are needed in this deck. They help get mana, but more importantly to do so they set them up as Grimm Captain fuel and are no joke when you put them on the battlefield for an attack trigger.
I don't know if you've already looked into this, but I was just wondering how to actually get any good use out of 'Abuelo's Awakening'. Then I realised that 'Threefold Thunderhulk' seems like it was meant to go with it. 7 mana is a bit expensive, so if you could get it into your graveyard somehow to either cast it for 4 as a 4/4 flyer that creates 4× 1/1 Gnome tokens upon entry, or later in the game with additional +1/+1 counters on it and also additional tokens. That white Ojer god creature that'd triple the amount of tokens would make sense. Also with 'Thousand Moons Smithy', and that R/W 3 mana legendary creature that creates tokens when she attacks, and grows herself. Putting in some 'Family Reunion', 'Acrobatic Leap', 'Monstrous Rage' and/or 'Dreadmaw's Ire' for good measure, could make sense if room for it 😆 Don't know if using Caves in the deck to also get 'Bat Colony' in there would make any sense. Several of the artifact creatures in LCI does have cave synergy in their abilities, so maybe. But again there'd have to be space for all what you'd need. Plus if you want your caves to enter untapped, then you also need green spelunking enchantment that you also used in your caves deck, so maybe Bat Colony doesn't fit in here 😅 Though except for regular 5-6 mana white sweepers, something as simple as the 2 drop 'Dauntless Dismantler' that can sweep the board for all your tokens just for 1 silly mana in the same turn that it's being cast in is also a significant threat to this kind of deck 😆 Edit: Oh, and that Throne artifact creature of course to make certain cards trigger twice 😆 And Mondrak ☝
Yeah noticed that. The opponent with what they showed couldnt do anything, they could have tried to make a blocker but you can fling after the blockers are declared and they still take lethal
I feel like malcom is great as a removal magnet. He is good by itself and while there is likely no immideate value (outside of flash blocking maybe) you simply cant risk him getting active.
Cenote is pronounced "seh-no-tay". It comes from the Mayan word for "hole with water", referring to the natural wells and underwater caves which were believed to be portals to the spirit realm, Xibalba (she-ball-bah).
Hmm, what about playing the Cap throne in Naya colors? Ghalta and Mavren is both a Dinosaur, a Vampire and an amazing payoff to bring back with Cap, and you still have merfolk in green and pirates, dinos and vampires in red, while having access to Get Lost and other such white removal
On the Thousand Moon Smithy game, you coulda won even through Emperor if you had simply played the Voldaren Thrillseeker before attacking, Backup 2 on the Captain, and then after attacks they're at 10 instead of 12, just pop it and the Thrillseeker for the 10 remaining damage when they declare they're popping Candy Trail
I feel like AtO decks played at the start of a new set would benefit from a revisit months down the road as new cards and mechanics become more familiar
Against the Gruff triplets if Seth had discarded the Volderen Thrillaeeker and played the land he could have legend ruled the throne to mill two. If he milled a pirate he could have flipped the throne.
The fact that you took a 1/1 instead of a 7/6 trampler, which came in attacking just to get a counter on your grinder instead of attacking for 14, when they would go to like 2, if just so Seth🥲😅
You could use souls of the lost to give grim captain haste, and use creatures like skeleton crew and skeletal vampire for fodder for him (if they are legal, I mainly play commander)
36:54 Please tell me, was there a time after The Wandering Emperor entered the battlefield and before her -2 was activated to use Trumpeting Carnosaur's ability and kill her? The card glows blue in hand but I'm not sure, haven't played Arena in a long while and I'm not sure about the timing
in this instance it wouldn't have mattered, The Wandering Emperor's static is "As long as The Wandering Emperor entered the battlefield this turn, you may activate her loyalty abilities any time you could cast an instant." So there isn't a window that you could carnosaur in which they couldn't respond with the -2 ability.
I would like to see a build where you transform it by animating the artifact, then using the soul cauldron to transform it like one of the MOM DFCs (or Heir of Falkenrath in other formats). That would be like "haste" but wouldn't get the free crafted creatures
37:35 you missed lethal here. If you played the thrill seeker first to back up the grim captain making him a 9/9 that couldn't block (menace) then he would have dropped to 10 and you could sac the captain and the thrillseeker for lethal
Grim Captain is fun, but I feel like I'm speed-running all the ways to lose despite transforming Grim Captain. Had a game where first Grim Captain was met with Render Inert their Invasion of Amonkhet to copy my Carnosaur to luckily flip into Gix's Command, wiping my board. Second Captain plus another dork the following turn met removal plus edict.
At 37:00 during the Wandering Emperor turn, couldn't you have played the Thrillseeker to boost Grim Captain to 9, swing in for 9 since it has menace, then sac it to deal the other 9? Wandering Emperor can't exile it since it's hexproof, and if they make a samurai, you can blow it up with Carnosaur's channel ability to prevent them from blocking. Even if you didn't know they had Wandering Emperor, that was guaranteed lethal by itself.

I believe there was a creature in MOM set that was both a vampire and a dinosaur. Would this card make up for the two types when crafting the grim captain?
gahlta and mavren is realy good in this deck because its a vempire and a dinsour and its realy good to be put into the battelfield with the grim captin
In game 1 you should have used your 7/6 Dino as burn instead of casting it. Then you should have at least cast the merfolk that explores X times. Could have gotten something to ping them.
Love you seth, but that first game was scuffed. Mistakes: - put in epicure instead of carnisaur for free - didn't flash in malcom - didn't sacrifice creature for 4 damage when opponent had 6 life.
if you take recommendations from comments, I recently threw together a deck that is literally just all of the cards that say discover when you cast them and it gets shockingly decent results
As someone who only plays this deck, like ima 6 month new player, you always spam the board when you get it’s attack triggers, so for game one you summon carnosaur everytime and my deck is almost all creatures and no blue at all, so it enters and I’ll etb another body like breeches or scallywag so they just have to have a board wipe at that point or die, also after he did wipe ur board on the second cast you could have got him down to 1 and once again, carnosaur wins

I believe there was a creature in MOM set that was both a vampire and a dinosaur. Would this card make up for the two types when crafting the grim captain?
It counts for either one, but not both at the same time. You still need to craft with four creatures total.
gahlta and mavren is realy good in this deck because its a vempire and a dinsour and its realy good to be put into the battelfield with the grim captin
I wanted to see Etali as the dino pick so you can get all the value.
It's pretty good with Urza's Hot Tub (which, granted, is not legal).
You gotta use the carnosaur burn and not pitch it to other discard effects from bloods and tunnel grinder
I mean when you casted the second grim captain, you didn't keep mana open to protect it with the counter spell so...
42:55 why didnt you cast the thone?
By the way, has the facecam section always been this big? I don't remember interfering with me being able to read the highlighted card 🙂
In game 1 you should have used your 7/6 Dino as burn instead of casting it.
Then you should have at least cast the merfolk that explores X times. Could have gotten something to ping them.
Love you seth, but that first game was scuffed. Mistakes:
- put in epicure instead of carnisaur for free
- didn't flash in malcom
- didn't sacrifice creature for 4 damage when opponent had 6 life.
if you take recommendations from comments, I recently threw together a deck that is literally just all of the cards that say discover when you cast them and it gets shockingly decent results
