Michael takes the queue and responds by scolding her, saying, "You are forbidden to see that boy!" He is somehow lonely for family. Thanks, Dr. Grande!
Also the reluctance of firing anyone. He would do practically anything to avoid having to fire someone. If he wouldn't care or be indifferent, he would just pick someone. I think he has a lot of empathy. I always figured Michael had ADHD. Speaking from experience, when you're an extremely hyperactive and inattentive kid others tend to find you to be annoying, which makes it hard to form or maintain friendships. If the symptoms persist into adulthood it might be hard to focus at work leading to lack of productivity and frequent distraction. On the other hand ADHD can make someone thrive in a job like sales because the energetic personality can be charming at times, and the meeting new people on a regular basis makes the job present novelty on a regular basis to keep someone engaged. Hence why Michael might have been one of the best salesmen, but is not well suited for being a manager of an office. Plus the lack of socializing growing up could result in poor social skills in regards to empathy or 'reading a room'.
I have ADHD-C (combined type) and have felt for a while that Michael Scott was one of us. He exhibits many of the hallmarks of both inattentive-type and impulsive/hyperactive-type ADHD.
There was one episode where he ripped into a box not addressed to him and Dwight correctly noted when michael asked ‘why did I do that!’ - ‘inattention and impulsivity’
Really good point. Michael is almost an exact mirror of my 14 year old ADHD self (but I’m a woman). I just realized what makes Michael funny to watch as opposed to annoying is that he doesn’t have those social boundaries and can’t pick up on a social cue to save his life. ADHD adults aren’t usually THIS socially inept. So it really does feel like the writers were trying to emulate a kid with ADHD rather than an adult with ADHD 😂. Add to that some low self esteem and thus, overcompensation for it, and we have MS!
@@chrisgould101 There was A LOT of humor in this video, although it definitely was not of the moist variety, so I can see how you would have missed it.
In the British version, David Brent clearly has some admirable qualities: he was also a very good salesman. He was annoying, but one somehow liked him, and were pleased when he found some happiness at the end. Enjoyed this analysis.
I always felt like he was on the spectrum with a history of neglect and social isolation. So his only ideas of how people act was from TV. He is too kind genuinely kind to be narcissistic
In a nutshell, Michael Scott’s diagnosis: a pain in the neck, with a big heart. I almost forgot how much I disliked him when they first started the show. It was the nostalgia of the work environment that made it an entertaining show. Then later, I became endeared with the characters.
Interesting! I really enjoyed the trait breakdown with the facet breakdown, too. As you were going through his personality profile, I noticed a fair amount of characteristics that would seem to fit with ADHD, too. He has difficulty completing tasks that don't interest him while focusing intensely on things that do. I think one could argue that he even distracts others to prevent being forced to do things he's not interested in, including tasks that require a high level of focus. He struggles with following through on things. He has serious problems with impulse control, most often seen in his lack of filter in conversation. He interrupts people, and he always has to do things first because he can't wait his turn. The high affective empathy/low cognitive empathy combination is more common in autism than ADHD, to be fair. And again, this one isn't a symptom criterion for ADHD, but he has a strong case of what the ADHD community refers to as "rejection sensitive dysphoria," meaning that when he perceives that he is being rejected, he experiences extremely strong negative emotions. Also, it's been a while since I watched the show, but I think there's a few times when he picks up a hobby, gets really into it, and it's gone again by the next episode, e.g. he goes on vacation and when he comes back, he's playing a steel drum. The lack of insight also fits!
As the adhd spokesperson for all schools I went to before being expelled, for adhd, Michael Scott presents with basically every thing that embodies adhd. In fact he could champion adhd in the workplace as a global spokesperson
.......Webster's Dictionary defines 'wedding' as 'the fusing of two metals with a hot torch. ' Well you know something? I think you guys are two medals. Gold medals......
If anything, Michael Scott is a blatant case of ADHD (which is a neurological condition, not a personality disorder) and I think the series has been written with that in mind. I remember an episode when Michael is trying to avoid taking responsibility for a situation, says he doesn't know why it happened, and Dwight behind him exclaims "INATTENTION TO DETAIL AND POOR MEMORY". I had growing suspicion since the beginning, but this line there, to me, confirmed that the authors really thought of Michael as having ADHD. I think ADHD and narcissism - or at least narcissistic traits - can easily overlap or be confused with each other. ADHD traits are often misinterpreted as manifestation of psychological issues, AND is also a risk factor for personality disorders in general and various psychological comorbidities. If some traits can be better explained by a neurologic condition such as ADHD, then they can't be used to diagnose a full blown narcissistic personality disorder. But I can easily imagine how one can pass as narcissistic when they have ADHD. Michael Scott is notorious for a couple of things that point to ADHD if you think of it. Has difficulty refraining from impulsive and extreme decisions, often fails to assess the safety of his plans and inadvertently puts himself and others in danger. Fails to assess other people's feelings and state of mind, fails to listen, has experienced rejection (and I think bullying is also suggested) as a kid, has poor social skills. Is forgetful, dreamy, clearly has a creative mind. Easily bored - making a show of everything, being a compulsive joker, can be an instinctive strategy to sustain his own mental arousal, attention and enthusiasm. In general, he has trouble "staying on track". Experiences extreme emotions and has trouble self soothing, self regulating, refraining from showing these emotions or acting upon them. Is basically emotionally immature. Has poor self assessment, fails to notice his own shortcomings, overestimates his abilities. Is a bad planner and only functions thanks to a lot of "scaffolding" (assistant, receptionist...). Has poor memory, and mixed with occasional excess of enthusiasm, makes "feel good" promises that he later finds himself unable to keep. Also LOOK AT THE NUMBER OF FIDGET TOYS ON THAT DESK. Now, ADHD can explain a fair share of what may seem like self-centeredness, impulsivity and irresponsibility, *but* there are still toxic behaviors in a character like Michael Scott that can be seen as narcissistic traits. When he choses to lie or hide the truth to get what he wants or avoid trouble, when he choses to blame someone else for something that is his fault (even when he knows it), when he puts others down to make himself look good, and when he disregards boundaries in general, these are *choices* that ADHD alone can't explain. They might not be enough to diagnose a bona fide personality disorder, but they're definitely *not* something you could blame on his hypothetical ADHD either. ADHD impairs some cognitive abilities, it makes you "clumsy" if you will, but not ill-intentioned, manipulative or purposefully toxic like narcissism. So Iong story short, I see Michael as someone with ADHD and *some* narcissistic traits.
DR.GRANDE!!!!!! Couple days ago I was thinking and wishing if you did a diagnosis of Micheal Scott because he always made me mad and he was so mean towards others wow this is so crazy!!!!!
OMG! 😂😂😂 How do you keep a straight face while analyzing The Office characters? I love these! Michael Scott: “Reverse psychology is an awesome tool. I don’t know if you guys know about it, but, basically, you make someone think the opposite of what you believe.......works like a charm!
As someone who just went to a family meeting with a delusional family member in the hospital who denied every symptom and seemed to coherently talk himself out of his illness, this video gives me hope that the psychiatrist knows how to see past a smooth talker and give my family healing .
The fact that you are evaluating a fictional character is comedy gold. Your deadpan delivery elevates the comedic level exponentially. Hard to beat that. THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!
Great breakdown, loved this! Could you do a breakdown of Joe Goldberg from the Netflix show You? He's obsessed with finding love and falls head over heels for the women unfortunate to have his affections. Any character that gets in his way he tends to act violently towards (often ending in murder). He has a soft spot for protecting children and deems himself a hero despite the horrible things he's done. The internet seems to love and root for him in the show. It would be great to get a breakdown of this character and see what mental health issues he could have 🙏🏾
Thanks Dr. Grande for doing this topic. I specifically liked hearing you mention all the 30 facets of the FFM in one video, while analyzing someone's character. Happy New year doc 😃🇳🇱
Thank you doctor Grande After watching the second season I just wanted this person to be analyzed and i swear I thought to my self “ i wish D. Grande would do it” and here it is I was laughing just watching you diagnose Michael
Man Dr Grande just made me miss Michael so much. I watched that series so many times and always stopped when he left. When I finally plowed through them all and finished I loved that they addressed that they were being recorded. When I first started watching I always wished they would work into the show what is happening with the supposed footage being shot and I’m glad they did. What an amazing show. Awesome analysis of Michael!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video! Thanks for sharing, Dr. Grande. The Atacama’s got nothing on you! 👍🏻 “The early bird gets the worm. Well, I am an early bird AND a night owl...so I am wise and I have worms.” - Michael Scott (psa on self awareness)
OMG...I am a massive Office geek...was walking my dogs this morning and thinking about what kind of a narcissist Michael Scott could be called (Benign Narcissist? Loveable Narcissist?) and what you would say about his behavior...and you've done it!!! So happy to find this!!!
I always thought Michael was very insecure and his narcissistic moments were just attempts at making himself and others believe the things he wished he was. Honestly, I love Michael Scott. I think it was when he’s the only one who shows up for Pam at her art show that won me over. 😭
This is great. I'd LOVE to see more of these takes on fictional people. There's something mesmerizing about it. Suggestion: "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is a wellspring of dysfunctional people. There's also a character who was diagnosed BPD in the show (Dennis Reynolds). It would be interesting to see if it's an accurate diagnosis in your opinion!

Haha, in other words, this character is an amalgam of all possible personality traits that suit the plot of each episode of The Office. Something Mr. Carrell handled masterfully.

i LOVE these kinds of videos where fictional characters are analysed and diagnosed!! very interesting to watch. Even though its fictional characters from tv shows and movies its quite interesting because its fun and educational at the same time. Micheal Scott is a good example of the tarot card "the fool" archtype and an unintentional troll. i love the situations he gets into and find alot of his childish immature offensive behavior to be hilarious. He does seem really naive and dumb at times like shouting out the word "bankruptcy" thinking thats how one declares bankruptcy, or like when he asked "how do i get youtube to come out and record me" but its like a childlike innocence. He's really just a big kid and a child at heart. He wants everyone to have fun and to be happy and have a good time and wants to be friends with (almost) everyone. He always wants fun and i love how non serious he is at times and can have a laugh at really serious intense moments when in situations like almost getting fired or in trouble with his bosses. At times though he is very immature and seems entirely oblivious to real dangers in the world around him and seems to have little to no awareness at all. Hes selfish in a very childish way at times too. He gets on good with kids too and i think thats because mentally he still is one himself lol. He soo hates toby because toby is very plain and boring and serious which is no fun to mike at all. He keeps excluding toby from things in a child like way and calls him corporate. He looks at everyone else in the workplace as his friends or as his family. He even kind of almost adopted ryan as his son, not litrelly but micheal looked at ryan like he was a son and loves him for some odd reason. Even went out of his way to spend extra and bought him the eye pod mp3 music thingy in a christmas episode which ended up going to someone else because of some office christmas gift swapping party game. Micheal is way too trusting at times and irresponsible. i think hed rather his people have fun rather than actually getting their work done. easy job i would love to come and work for him. easy monies all day long. one of the most child like things i remember him doing was trying to escape his problems by running away and being avoided of serious issues that need addressing, or that episode where he was gonna run away from home by getting the train out of town. i think was because of bankruptcy or debt or jan or something cant entirely remember. Speaking of which he lets people use him and even fell victim to a pyramid scheme until others in the office had pointed it out AFTER he did a presentation and tried getting them on board it. i love the whole "thats what she said" thing and use it almost everyday, i had forgotten it was him it came from till i just heard you mention it in the video. i think he would be a really bad parent but an amazing fun uncle. i love his inappropriateness and blatant offensivesness when trying to make a joke and have a laugh with no real malicious intent behind it but sometimes he goes too far which lands him in trouble and doesnt know when to stop at times. i respect the whole character thing he does when hes trying to teach something because it shows that hes trying to make learning fun for others but the problem is hes not teaching a bunch of kids with little attention spans but actually hes a boss teaching adults in an office setting. As boss he should be a bit more serious and setting a better example of being a good leadership role and setting realistic goals that he wants people to work towards and actually accomplish. Enforcing Responsibilities basically while at the same time being a good hard working leader. Thanks for reading this far to anyone who has!
I am so glad you did this!! I have always wondered about Michael Scott... and thought it would be cool to see a professional analyze him! Happy new year! 🎆🎊
Very well done. The ability to use a fictitious character so many are familiar with really helps as you lay out your case. I applaud your Dx, so many seem to stretch criteria to make a definitive Dx. Sadly, in my agency, we would be discouraged from an unspecified/NOS Dx for fear of not getting paid by a funder or Medicare/Medicaid. I imagine an analysis of GEORGE COSTANZA from SEINFELD would be very interesting. :-)
I am soooo excited for this one!!! I worked retail with a guy that was JUST like Michael. He was a ex comedian n he ran our small store with around on dozen employees in Pittsburgh. I really mean he was just like Michael, we actually tried to get a reality show in our store because of him. He was a lovely person but full on always saying the most inappropriate things to us all the time but when we would prank him back, he would flip out n then laugh no get us back again.
What a great video Dr Grande. How you could do this without breaking your composure is amazing -- I laughed throughout recalling the episodes you mentioned. Thanks so much.
Love to see a video for some of the other characters on the show. They are each very interesting in their own way. The dynamics they have with each other too. The show as a joke was so successful and loved because of the great fleshed our characters and their growth. I love the show and rewatch it often. ❤️
I don't know how I could ever characterize Grande, as light-hearted, no, of course, I can't. But I think this is hysterical. This should be added as additional material to season close.
I think Michael could also have ADHD. He's very impulsive, lacks focus (although we see he can hyperfocus on things he enjoys like being a salesman) is hyperactive, and has other symptoms. Many of his behaviours could be explained by this
Who knew Dr. Grande was also a fan of The Office??? I've been wondering what's wrong with Michael Scott for years! Ha-ha! Very thorough analysis as always, Doctor. Spot on. The first fictional character I thought of that I'd love to see an analysis of is Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate. She's rife with disorders. Dr. Grande, this is SUCH a great fictional character to analyze! Anyone trying to fully explain Michael Scott to a person who hasn't seen the show is VERY difficult. You nailed it though when you said something along the lines of: There is way way he could really survive in the real world, haha! ADHD adults aren’t usually THIS socially inept. So it really does feel like the writers were trying to emulate a kid with ADHD rather than an adult with ADHD 😂. Add to that some low self esteem and thus, overcompensation for it, and we have MS!
Love listening to this calm relaxed intellectual
I'm trying to figure out if he has a sense of humour. How can U do Michael Scott and not laugh😅😅
@Rogue Squadron *Thats the nature of **_dry_** humor; very, very dry humor.*
@@Griselda_Puppy I prefer my humour to be moist
@@chrisgould101 There was A LOT of humor in this video, although it definitely was not of the moist variety, so I can see how you would have missed it.
And his puns.
Omg! My life is complete now, never have I clicked on something so fast!
Me too! Lol
Same!!!
I love how you can do a fun video and still take it seriously lol! Next you should do an analysis of Dr. Gregory House.
me to, this video was awesome and the fact he treated it seriously elevated it for me.
THAT would be a very interesting one for sure!
Yes please! Dr. House would be great!😀
*I would **_love_** to see a video like this on Dr. House!*
YES House would be great!
I was just telling my fiance yesterday that I hope Dr. Grande makes a video about Michael Scott. Well, my wish came true.
In the British version, David Brent clearly has some admirable qualities: he was also a very good salesman. He was annoying, but one somehow liked him, and were pleased when he found some happiness at the end. Enjoyed this analysis.
DR Grande what a wonderful treat to say goodbye to 2019 with laughter
Okay I officially adore this channel.
You can tell this man is professional. Every statement is backed up with its respective disclaimer
I always felt like he was on the spectrum with a history of neglect and social isolation. So his only ideas of how people act was from TV. He is too kind genuinely kind to be narcissistic
You know what, Dr. Grande? You do really nice, very thorough summaries of programs and films.
My thought exactly. Also, *look at the number of fidget toys on that desk* !
good point i wondered about adhd myself
I’ve always seen Michael as having ADHD.
ADHD seems to make sense, that's the first thing that popped to mind
As the adhd spokesperson for all schools I went to before being expelled, for adhd, Michael Scott presents with basically every thing that embodies adhd. In fact he could champion adhd in the workplace as a global spokesperson
I'm writing this as I prepare my ethics syllabus for the Spring semester! A lot to think about here! Always a pleasure Dr. G!
Good luck

.......Webster's Dictionary defines 'wedding' as 'the fusing of two metals with a hot torch.
I've never missed an episode and it's still hilariously funny to me.
This is the most amazing analysis of Michael Scott I've ever heard! Subscribed.
"I can keep a secret for as long as I possibly can." Michael Scott
DR.GRANDE!!!!!! Couple days ago I was thinking and wishing if you did a diagnosis of Micheal Scott because he always made me mad and he was so mean towards others wow this is so crazy!!!!!
That's what she said
Can you tell us more about, “theory of mind?” (As a side; I think your parents must be very proud of you.)
Pretty interesting.
This single dislike was left secretly by Dwight Schrute:)
Clever!
😂😂😂
He's going to be doing Michael's laundry again.
OMG! 😂😂😂 How do you keep a straight face while analyzing The Office characters? I love these!
Michael Scott: “Reverse psychology is an awesome tool. I don’t know if you guys know about it, but, basically, you make someone think the opposite of what you believe.......works like a charm!
Michael scott has a beautiful soul. Happy new year people!!
As someone who just went to a family meeting with a delusional family member in the hospital who denied every symptom and seemed to coherently talk himself out of his illness, this video gives me hope that the psychiatrist knows how to see past a smooth talker and give my family healing .
Michael Gary Scott- “he has a lot of issues and he’s stupid.”- Phyllis Vance
It would be great to get a breakdown of this character and see what mental health issues he could have 🙏🏾
Especially with consideration of the closing scene of the second season.. An objective take would be so interesting!
Hilarious, I love that show
Its a book series also
I think Michael’s mother marrying Jeff was really a blow because Jeff took away Little Mike’s only friend-his mom.
When I hear everything he is saying I’m watching bits of the office in my head it’s great
Thanks Dr. Grande for doing this topic. I specifically liked hearing you mention all the 30 facets of the FFM in one video, while analyzing someone's character.
Happy New year doc 😃🇳🇱
Thank you doctor Grande
After watching the second season
I just wanted this person to be analyzed and i swear I thought to my self “ i wish D. Grande would do it” and here it is
I was laughing just watching you diagnose Michael
Man Dr Grande just made me miss Michael so much. I watched that series so many times and always stopped when he left. When I finally plowed through them all and finished I loved that they addressed that they were being recorded. When I first started watching I always wished they would work into the show what is happening with the supposed footage being shot and I’m glad they did. What an amazing show. Awesome analysis of Michael!
The contrast between how serious you are while describing funny scenes is priceless! I love it!
Ahaha! I saw the title and thought _"thats what she said.."_ but than you addressed it and I felt juvenile. 😄
Happy New Year, Dr Grande! 🎉🥂👍
Thoroughly enjoyed this video! Thanks for sharing, Dr. Grande. The Atacama’s got nothing on you! 👍🏻
“The early bird gets the worm. Well, I am an early bird AND a night owl...so I am wise and I have worms.” - Michael Scott (psa on self awareness)
I love your channel Dr. Grande! Very well thought out and keeps me learning every day.
I honestly think ALL of them have BPD. I'd be very interested in wathign that analysis.
ok classic!!! i'm loving the plaid and that colour combo!!!! dr g serving the excellent character analysis AND cozy fashion looks yes!!! another year of todd being a pillar of wisdom in my life thank u always doc
Haha, in other words, this character is an amalgam of all possible personality traits that suit the plot of each episode of The Office. Something Mr. Carrell handled masterfully.
Tremendously thoughtful overview of the personality disorder exam. And perfect conclusion: none of the above. Fiction in, fiction out.
Diagnose characters from Parks & rec! I feel like they all had something going on lol. Love this video 💖 I’m in school for counseling and hope to get my doctorate eventually and gain as much as knowledge as you have one day :)
Yes! Leslie Knope next. ;)
i LOVE these kinds of videos where fictional characters are analysed and diagnosed!! very interesting to watch.
I could never put my finger on where exactly his personality fell. I am so glad you did this.
That's what she said
This was an amazing lesson. I have learned a massive amount by watching your videos.

That’s exactly why I like Michaels character ! Thanks Dr Grande !
This saves me a trip to the doctors. Thank you.
*YASSSS! This made my Year, my Decade even...*

After watching this I love you more than ever before Dr.G.
Happy New Year Dr. Todd!
I think Michael could also have ADHD. He's very impulsive, lacks focus (although we see he can hyperfocus on things he enjoys like being a salesman) is hyperactive, and has other symptoms. Many of his behaviours could be explained by this
I've been looking for an acceptable video like this for YEARS. So glad you finally made it 😁
Dr. Grande Unplugged! How did I miss this one? I think he liked Michael Scott, there were fewer snarky comment than usual.
Dr G's approach on this topic is so much serious and professional but I can't help but laugh at any Michael Scott quote lol
Whoa whoa whoa, Michael Scott is a character? Note to self : cancel Scranton vaca, cancel paper order- thanks Doc

Who knew Dr. Grande was also a fan of The Office??? I've been wondering what's wrong with Michael Scott for years! Ha-ha! Thanks for another scientifically informed breakdown, Doc!👍🏽👍🏽 How about his ex, Jan? She seems like somebody you covered in one of your "wife with narcissistic/histrionic/BPD" videos...🤔
Michael Scott is the ideal state of human being.
His humour suggest he’s a fan of wit. With many of his jokes you have to read between the lines. The Office has a lot of both
Oh I can TOTALLY-see dr grande being VERY into the office :)

He's a leo sun. So yes, he wants to be center of attention, his moon sign is Pisces which means he's very intuitive and empathetic and his rising sign is virgo. So he can be critical of himself and others. U need to study astrology. There is nothing wrong w him. He has Pisces in his 6th house of health which states he'll have addiction to alcohol and pills. Also having a moon in Pisces means his father abandoned him during childhood. So he does have abandonment issues.

Very thorough analysis as always, Doctor. Spot on. The first fictional character I thought of that I'd love to see an analysis of is Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate. She's rife with disorders. But given that it's an older movie, I'm not sure the bulk of your audience would know much about it. Either way it'd be interesting!
Dr. Grande, this is SUCH a great fictional character to analyze! Anyone trying to fully explain Michael Scott to a person who hasn't seen the show is VERY difficult. You nailed it though when you said something along the lines of: There is way way he could really survive in the real world, haha! I used to always say to others, "There's no way he could function in society!" And of course also, "In real life he would be HR's worst nightmare. He'd be fired by the end of the week..." LOL.
