I feel in love with Herbie Hancock back in 1963. At the ageo of 13, I heard a piece performed by Donald Bryd,
"Sometimes I feel like a Motherless Child" from the Album with Donald Dryd "Up" Herbie, being the piano sideman in this recording, the harmonies, that he was laying down on thiat cut was phenomenal. I became, after that, a fan for life. Also, his playing on recordings of Wes Montgomery, on the Verve and A&M labels were just so inventive, with that Herbie, blues-funk comping, became his tradmark. With productions undr his onw namem Watermelone Man, Cantelope Island, and then with Miles Davis, beyond category. Later in 1971, He visted my Alma mater withj Bennie Maupin and tha Head Hunters group, But the topping of the cake, was when he accidentally became my Shakubuku Fatther, this was , of course, no accident. This was the first time I heard of the Mantra teachings of Buddhism, Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. I actually became member of the Buddhist practice in Vienna in March 29, 1989. So today, i would like to give a personal thanks of gratitude and Love, not only has it awakened me to my true self identity, but it heavily influenced me as a musician, piano artist, composer andd teacher. The Spirituality of the Practice, gives you your life that has been with you for all times and spaces. Time meaning without any beginning or end. Your presence becomes that within the Light of the Universe, giving you the power and the strength independent of any and all outside entities. You become the projector and you outer enivrionment mirrors thagt environment completely without question. Love, Light, Peace becomes radiance of the Light that lives within. Thank you, Herbie Hancock, Gardena Cole, Charleston Marquis. SGI and all members worldwide.

Herbie performed at the Big Ears festival earlier this year. And he really brought it. Terence Blanchard, Devin Daniels, James Genus, Trevor Lawrence Jr. & Lionel Loueke in the band. And Herbie played with energy of a man half his age. Remarkable. Saw him for the first time with his Mwandishi band (1971?) and many times between then and 2024.. He's something else again.

While it is quite likely I had heard Herbie on records before and was not aware I was listening to the great one, Headhunters was my first "formal" introduction and it blew my mind and immediately became and remains one of my all time favorite albums, especially the cuts "Sly" and "Vein melter". I love the sax and the extreme funkiness. Throughout the years Herbie has grown in so many different directions and played with so many other world class virtuosos that his legacy as one of the greats is assured.

Maestro Hancock has made such an impact on the language of music, that his entire vocabulary is essential study for any musician especially for pianists, keyboardists, composers, and arrangers. Any person dealing with sophisticated harmonic
scenarios like Maestro Hancock does, creates a sound which gets called by the person’s first name. He’s a brilliant soloist but his harmonic concept changed Jazz forever
