- Red squirrels were once common throughout the UK. Tragically, they are now one of our rarest mammals and are missing from most of the areas where they once lived.
There are many forests in the north-west Highlands that could support red squirrels, but as they can't cross open ground, they can't get there without our help.
Our Red Squirrel Project will move small numbers of red squirrels from areas where they are thriving, and create ten new populations, free from grey squirrels and other threats.

If I was that red squirrel I would be seriously annoyed. Love the native reds, hate the foreign invading greys. P.s. There are no greys left in my garden!
The grey ones should be removed from Great Britain.
It is nice to see the Red Squirrels being reintroduced back into their former territories. They bring life back into the ecosystem, and restore it to it's former glory.
Trees for Life: You should get 2 squirrels from each area, so they can have a friend to go with them. It will improve their happiness and survival.
In 60 years I have only seen a red squirrel in Ukraine even though I live close to The New Forest. Pity the Victorians didn't introduce chipmunks instead of the grey squirrels.
The red squirrel is locally extinct in Southern England except for the Isle of Wight (15 x 20 miles), off the Hampshire coast, the Scilly Isles, 30 miles SW or Cornwall, and the "cause celebre" of Brownsea Island. Brownsea Island measures 1 x 2 miles and is in Poole Harbour, Dorset.
In those cases, the grey squirrels have not crossed the water.

I live in the UK and haven't seen a red squirrel since I was a child over 50 years ago...still miss those beautiful garden visitors and hope one day they will return. Still love the greys though!

Greys need to be culled humanly but not eradicated in native habitats
i live in the eastern us and while the greys are super cute they are the only native wildlife i see besides the occasional skunk
Fire up the public and get the Scot govt, off their butts and establish a National and state forest systems!
You can't say that these wee Squirrels wern't stressed !! you should be able to see they are healthy without capturing them!
A bit odd that their role in helping to restore the forests wasn't mentioned in this vid... it was in another Trees For Life vid.
In the Park of Château de Versailles, France, 🇫🇷, there are many red squirrels. They are happy, but don 't like tourists , except one pretty female. She doesn'' t like peanuts. Eats nuts, walnuts etc. out of my hand. She'll have kittens soon as male squirrels already run after her (January 23rd 2023).
Are Grey's a problem in France?

I have just spent 5 full days filming Red Squirrels in a small UK stronghold and there was never a dull moment. They just don't seem to stop for more than a few seconds and are so funny and cute. The Re-introduction programme is wonderful and every credit to you and everyone involved in this great cause. Thank you for sharing these beautiful scenes and good luck moving forward. 👍◕‿◕

Come to New York, US... we have the little buggers by the millions and they live side by side with the grays. Take all you want.
They are another species. The common name is red squirrel for both but their Latin name is different.
Introduced ivasive species are often a problem for native ones. The natives might even go extinct and replaced with the introduced one.
Probably full of disease like the Greys.
Scotland is truly the better version of Ireland😭😭😭
We cut down 98% percent of our trees for farming, not logging so reforestation would require taking land off farmers which THE STUPID GOVERNMENT WOULDN'T ALLOW
if they do the catch at random, wouldn't they get some nursing squirrels? or do they check?

Wonderful to see the reintroduction to this area.
I'm in Perthshire now, and I've had Red Squirrels in my garden on and off over the years, although in recent years, no sign of them.
I'm glad to say, that last year and this year, there IS a Red squirrel visiting the bird feeders.
Got a funny email from my neighbour just today, saying that he had to chase the Red squirrel out of his garden three times because it was chewing holes in his tracksuit bottoms, hanging on his washing line! 😅😅 Presumably to add some nice cosy material to it's drey? Lol
why does she keep feeding them goddamn peanuts, they´re not optimal for squirrels, use goddamn walnuts or hazelnuts. those peanuts gave me an aneurisma
awwww...what a marvellous work! what a sweet, sweet looking squirrels!.....never knew they were so decimated in Scotland!....extinct in that part of UK....so, so glad people are fixing the wrongs done to the environment and wildlife..:-)
what if the squirrels had a family and you took them away from their kids?? A bit wrong
I'm pretty sure they'll be taking the breeding cycle into account to avoid that.
Have a Brunswick stew festival each autumn and then not only are you reducing the number of gray squirrels but they taste good
Some UK restaurants and gastro pubs are serving them as fine dining and charging an arm and a leg to boot.
We need an organised grey control program or this dream will never happen .
But they are breaking up families!

Probably a different genus to the European squirrels and who's to say that they don't carry the same pox as the invasive Grey.
I’m sorry that the USA was so stupid to send you gray squirrels, but I think I have a good idea for you to give a try. I’m a native of the State of Virginia, we have a wonderful solution for what to do with too many gray squirrels. Brunswick stew.

Large predators would help restore highland forests, the only people that are against it are farmers. Selfish of them if you ask me.

Don't know, search for it on their web page. I think over a million. They mostly work with nature so they let many come through naturally.

if they chew the pink string the trap falls to ground and squirrel is in injured . The white sack is deafening to a squirrel. good project but your methods are poor
We’ve caught more than 200 squirrels using this method and have never seen any chewed string or had any traps fall to the ground. No squirrels have died or been injured as a result of our translocations and these methods are approved by both vets and Scottish Natural Heritage. Animal welfare is paramount - we check the traps every hour and cover them over immediately with a dark cloth to minimise stress. All translocations have gone very successfully and have resulted in healthy new breeding populations.
