    I just watched her repeat this amazing performance last night with the St. Louis Symphony here. Truly an electrifying experience that brought the audience to its feat as soon as the last chord died away. The rest of the all-Russian program here was equally impressive. She's going places, mark my words.

    Good pacing; solid crescendos; flowing lines of melody ;excellent wind and brass playing in the splendidly realized second movement. For me, the conductor and the orchestra demonstrated very clearly why they deserved to be at the Proms. A very energetic rendition of the finale. I felt the confidence soar from the music. I am grateful for the opportunity to view this performance. Wow!

    Chang does a very great job here. The very broadly and legato intonating brass section was in this intense a novum for me in this great symphony, but after a short time of surprise i began to like it. It is an interpretation full of temperament and vigor and chang stands in no way back behind her countless male colleagues. Bravo.

    Ms. Chang is a phenomenal conductor - male or female. I also was also extremely impressed with the Qatar Philharmonic in their excellent musicianship. Also studying the French Horn in college, the group's principal, 1st-chair French Horn player gets a gigantic thumbs up for me for the brilliant manner that he performed the exquisite solo shortly after the beginning of the 2nd movement. Bravissimo to the entire performance.

    Maestra Chang has great promise. She has an abundance of energy, and command of the music. I hope that she does not hurt herself conducting every beat with so much vigor though. When I was first starting to conduct professionally, I learned the hard way to take it easy, and not conduct every passage as if it were the climax. I would also suggest that she use her left hand more for expression. Apparently, she resigned as the director of the Qatar Orchestra, in the middle of their tour, after this fine performance. It was the day after their PROMS Debut, and she citied trouble with management. This orchestra is supposed to be all Middle-Eastern musicians, but I think there are a fair number of Europeans in the group. Great horn and timpani playing! Bravo.

    Shi is actually one of the most spiritual, deeply emotional conductors beside Mitropoulos. What kind of enorm it is!
    When I listened to her Faure’s Elegy in her first CD, 20 years ago, I believed as if were played by an old woman: I imaged a dying ant lion whose wings were caught by long time stagnant water remaining in the bottom of deep well; she is looking up with unmoving wings disparately the illuminating, transparent blue sky cut off roundly by the dark and half demolished rough wall. I could but feel the presence of one of her female ancestors behind her who guides her to play in such a way as a guardian angel.
    While her style is always subtle, yet here enorumously enormous. The pernson who likes music as pasttime siting deeply into the sofa shoudn't listend to such kind of divine, sublime music. I would like have this whole recording as CD. Please publish it!

    • @Zaloomination
      @Zaloomination 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stupid question but help me understand what the conductor does? Why are they praised so highly over the musicians? Are they the ones that follow the original and arrange them in new ways? Obviously relatively new to classical music but I love this song.

    • @paulwl3159
      @paulwl3159 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Zaloomination The relationship of the musicians to the conductor is comparable to that of a football team to their manager. One performs, the other provides the overall strategy and cohesion. The coach/conductor work to make sure that everyone plays as a balanced team. But of course the manager is nothing without the actual players.
      A conductor’s role involves bringing to every piece an artistic focus and vision. They have to establish the precise tempi, the balance of sound and timbre. There are often uncertainties about how a piece should be interpreted or phrased, should repeat markings be followed or ignored? If two or more versions of a piece exist, which should be followed? Should certain inner voices be brought to the fore or left as background? How should the overall architecture be revealed? All these are questions primarily for the conductor.
      In addition, a conductor often decides the programme, along with other directors. The conductor is usually involved with promotion and fundraising at some level. For better or worse, over time, a conductor usually establishes a particular personal “sound” with which they are associated.
      All this is not to say that large groups of musicians cannot perform to a high standard without a conductor, one such case being the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, but this is very rare and requires a lot of collaboration and rotation of leadership roles.

    What a fantastic performance of this symphony. One can become somewhat tired of the standard repertoire at times, but Han-Na Chang has given this work new life. I have never been so impressed with a performance of a Tchaikovsky symphony as I have with this one. What a tragedy for this orchestra and its audiences that Han-Na Chang felt compelled to resign her post.
    Other orchestras are obviously benefitting from her energy and vitality. She is where classical music has needed to be for a long time.

She has a very clear style and conducts in such an expressive way. Total mastery of the art. She conducts the orchestra like she's playing her cello.
