I use a double boiler still and melt my bee's wax and cocoa butter separate. The OCD, control issue, I have!!!❤❤❤ I put sodium hydroxide or citric acid to control the ph. All skincare products should fall between 4 5 to 5 5. The natural ph of your skins mantle.
Always love watching your videos Karen! Lovely massage bars, lotion bars! Thank you for including your recipe! Love the mica rub , it really ups the look 👀 💝💝💝
Thank you for sharing this. I've never made them before so I tried your recipe yesterday, in much smaller quantity. I made some mini bars using chocolate moulds. They turned out well too. 😊 thanks
so I'm a bit skincare formulation obsessed, and essentially, the reason they need to lower the PH of lotions with sodium hydroxide is because your skin's natural PH is around a 5.5/6! and a lot of the time, formulations would be far too acidic without it. it's also the same reason citric acid is used in some skincare products! consistently putting something that's too high or too low in PH can lead to some pretty nasty skin problems
Would you be able to use citric acid in this type of recipe? I’m new to this. Just learning. I made a moisturizer and used a touch of CA to lower the PH. Thank you.
@@osieg if you need to raise the PH for some reason, then yes! Citric acid and sodium hydroxide are used to balance out PH. As long as the overall PH is within a reasonable margin, it'll be fine. So sorry I didn't reply sooner :)
What a great video! Did not feel like an hour, to be honest. I have to ask, Karen, did the vie est belle make it into the bars? 😂 only joking! Those all came out beautiful, I’ll bet they smell amazing! Such a fun project! And yes, I did know they use lye to make pretzels! It’s one of the reasons “food grade lye” is a thing. I have a home recipe for them that uses boiling baking soda water instead, and I feel like it’s much more dangerous! Thanks for bringing us along with you today! Have a fantastic weekend!

Looking forward to more of your vids…
Yes lotion bars can melt slightly in a hot country so maybe try another 10% beeswax on top of what I have in recipe Question, is cocoa butter solid when you store it at home? If it’s not I think you’ll need a fridge to keep them in and I brushed the bars with dry mica no rubbing alcohol

I can't wait to try these again. Your cocoa butter looks a lot more dry and brittle than the cocoa butter I get here in Canada. I have not been able to get mine to harden more than a firm vaseline. Maybe it's because of my cocoa butter being smoother looking? I followed the previous recipes exactly, and it was disastrous. I do buy the refined/deodorized cocoa butter. Do you think that's the reason?
Where are you ordering from? I’m from Canada and I’ve ordered both deodorized and natural cocoa butter. I found the deodorized harder but both are harder then as you described it
I buy the refined cocoa too, there will be different grades of cocoa, I remember I used to buy a shea butter that was very emollient, as though oil had been added to make it softer, then somebody told me you can get cheaper variations of the stuff, so I always buy mine from better suppliers now.
Love your visions so down to earth x but can not bear useing fragrance oils or smell them on any one I get a really bad elergic reaction I wish thayd be band I cart use public transport or mix I wish people would think about the toxins in them
Bea: Fragrance oils are specifically made for skincare application and are quite safe. They are not toxic. If you have a particular sensitivity to them, I suggest you study essential oils which may be a better choice for your particular application.
Probably, Bea, you are reacting to an allergen within the fragrance oil (allergens are also in essential oils) and if you could pin down which one you'd be able to work out which products you are okay with and which you must avoid. The EU and UK require 26 allergens to be declared on labels. Google to find a list of the 26 allergenic substances. These are not toxic, just the most common substances that people have allergies to. You may have seen 'linalool' or 'hexyl cinnamal' at the end of an ingredient list, for example, and that's what they are.
FYI: to thoroughly sanitize with 70% isopropyl alcohol, it should sit on surface for at least 30 seconds. Also, surprisingly, 70% is better bcuz 90% IPA evaporates too fast. I was surprised by that.
Hi Karen .. Your butters look really good but are they really soft ? I tried this recipe divided your recipe into 1/4 of what you have here 16 oz and my bars came out really soft they start to melt as soon as it's in your hands. Is that how they are suppose to be ? I was only trying to make a few bars, and this one made 5 bars of the sunflowers. I wanted to try it did I do something wrong ?
Shea butter can vary in the fatty acid composition. Raw shea is typically much softer, refined tends to be harder. Always, always run a small test before making a batch
@@AbiCroCro Yes I've seen Lush stuff and can't hardly believe the way they sell some of there soaps like that. Never tried one of their lotions bars. Next time I'm in one of the shops I'll have to see if they have any out to test. TY
@@barbaraayala7808 convert the recipe to percentages. Any recipe you get. Then run a 100g test batch (or 50g). So if it was 25% wax, it would be 25g wax (or 17.5g if your batch weight is 50g). Also, there are differences between suppliers and even batches with suppliers. Natural butters just vary. Cocoa butter is probably the only consistent butter I've seen as far as consistency goes. It's a bit of a chore to test, but you save in the end. Nothing stings more than a big, bad batch 😆

@nightbaby5101 most people don't need to be such an arrogant ass that they barrate someone for pointing to those who don't happen to think and end up getting hurt. And putting the knife on an unclean top and not then re cleaning it. I'd clean the top before I put anything on it. And containers are kept off the area I would use to cut on etc... Microwaves destroy oil benefits. As they ruin food nutrition.... Avoid where possible. These basic reasons are why I started making my own... Charging for natural goods after using systems including microwaves, should say so on the container. Then we have choice and can buy the best for our cash.

Please do everyone, especially your clients, a favor and take the extra moment to put on latex gloves or something of the like. It's very cringe that you stick your bare hands into something you sell. You even left in the part where you pulled a hair out of the oils with your bare hands.

GOLD WHAT?
Looks pretty but what is that gold made out of?
This video is a long bunch of nothing. Why are you microwaving the product? Why weren’t you better prepared? Why did it take so long to say so little?
There’s a bunch of other shorter videos you could’ve watched instead of leaving a negative comment on this one. You knew it was an hour long before you started watching.

Look at all the warning labels ffs
Consider the warning labels on essential oils, Bea. Either FO or EO, when used properly, is safe.
Hard to look at hands with dirty fingernails. Please wash your hands well and scrub dirt from underneath your nails
You may want to clean your screen to see clearly dear. That’s not dirt it’s glitter on the tips of her nails. There’s no dirt under her nails. Hope this helped. 😊
Please reduce the time thats not necessary there😢
Lovely bars especially the cupcakes 😍
