      @therevanchist2869 This song. It's from a Viking age poem written by an absolute whacko Norsemen. Or maybe he was Icelandic.
      "My mother told me one day I would buy gallies with great oar and sail to distance shores" is the English version. That's what he was talking about. His mother was proud of him for killing the kid because she thought he would make a good viking.

    • @danielnordberg8326

      Its funny how the english translation is done only to make it singable :D the real translation is actually abit diffrent, and if you ask a dane, swede or norse or even an icelandic guy you will get diffrent translations in some ways. We scandinavians can relate to the original text but in all our own languages we can translate some of the words easy but with some diffrent meaning.

    • @bobbyallen7977
      @bobbyallen7977 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@danielnordberg8326 could you put the better translation for us because I like this chant and would like to know more about it. I've heard many translations and like them all but the literal translation would be good to know.

    • @danielnordberg8326
      @danielnordberg8326 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@bobbyallen7977 Well, as i write its pretty hard since i would translate it from a scandic way, while danes would probably translate it some words diffrent but probably the same meaning. I mean the english translation might be as correct it could be not sure.
      For example: Fagra is a norwegian word stil used, in sweden it would be Fager. Fager now days means "beautiful", but id say from what i could come across Fagra would mean "well made oars" the word fley is translated here as a ship and it might be correct, but id say its a more like the scandic word "Flotte/flotta" and the old meaning of that would be a small ship, not a galley or a swift ship.
      About the line of Vikingum would be translated as advanture or trade adventure in some way. "Distant shores" is not even near correct but it fits for the singing ofcourse :D
      "standa upp í stafni" I would translate as "Stand up and be ready", Standa upp = Stand up, "í stafni" is harder to translate but something like "be on your guard".
      "stýra dýrum knerri" is a hard one, i would guess the correct translation would be something like "Steer the valueble load/goods" but the word Knerri makes it hard, since i cant really any other meaning then compared to the german word Knarren witch means weapons. So might be "Steer the ship full of valueble weapons" not in form of items but in form of men/soldiers/vikings/warriors or something like that.
      "halda svá til hafnar" Stop at diffrent harbours would probably be a correct translation, hafn back in the viking era would be nothing else but a trading port. And Halda translated Halt make the translation kind of correct i guess.
      "hǫggva mann ok annan" The direct translation would be "Cut down men and others" in swedish it would be exact translation of "Hugga man och annan" witch for a swede sounds stupid since it we now would have said "Hugga ned män och andra" so Cut down men and others probably more correct.
      I mean this is my logic using the knowledge of scandinavian/germanic language. So ofcourse as i said, some would translate it diffrent. but to sum it up id say the meaning of the song might be correct even from the english translation but the undermeaning is sometimes diffrent since the sagas are often written in metaphors.
      In my head this would be not the correct translations word by word but the translation of the meaning of the text.
      My mother gave me no other choice//
      Then to get a well made ship//
      Gather men and go for advantures//
      Seek down new routes for trade//
      I will guard my ship and men with my life//
      Stop at every new possible trade opportunity//
      If we find ourselfs in trouble//
      We will defend ourselfs with everything we got//

    • @danielnordberg8326
      @danielnordberg8326 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also this would be the english translation taken of Egils saga.
      Thus counselled my mother,
      For me should they purchase
      A galley and good oars
      To go forth a-roving.
      So may I high-standing,
      A noble barque steering,
      Hold course for the haven,
      Hew down many foemen.'

    Funny enough, I have an online friend who worships the Norse pantheon. And what I learned from him is if you do not die in glorious combat but worship the gods enough, you'll be allowed to be a servant in Valhalla. But if you don't you'll go to hel. Sounds like a rip-off of you ask me.

      Actually, it is known that Ođin believes that life itself is a battle and to live through it makes you a warrior, you don't have to die and fight in war to feast with the gods, you just have to live in a way that's true to yourself and you will visit the gods as an old friend. Skål
