Does Iroh count because in my heart I thought of him as Team Avatar after him helping Team Avatar in Book 2 to defeat Azula and defeat the FIRE LORD.

I never realized how fucking sweet Katara is in this episode.
Korra was definitely in the wrong for taking her anger out on Katara, but what Katara focused on wasn't the unfairness of it. She just saw a young person who has had horrible things happen to her and had been bottling up a lot of unhealthy anger inside of her, and just went "it's okay, get it out, I can take it".
Reminds me of how many times Iroh just took Zuko's bursts of anger and still welcomed him back with a smile and a hug; I know we've seen her as an old lady this entire time, but Katara not even showing hurt, not complaining, just calmly accepting because she knows that's what Korra needs, for the first time made me realize that she's matured so freaking much.

Katara is my favorite character. Not just in Avatar, but like...ever. She’s basically the mother of the franchise.

Mordirit I will say though that Katara was always kind of like that. There were many times that Aang, Sokka, Toph, and later Zuko came to Katara for comfort and understanding. She’s pretty empathetic that way.

For a once physically strong and independent person, being reduced to this kind of state must've been really hard for Korra. I loved the fact that Bryke showed the struggle of it all as opposed to glossing over it as most kid shows would when it comes to issues of depression and trauma. They even stated that they could've fast-forwarded to a point where Korra was 100% better both physically and mentally, but felt it would've been a great disservice to those who were actually dealing with these issues.
I really loved that broken mirror and Dark Korra chaining herself to Korra symbolism at the beginning too. Overall, it helped further show what kind of place Korra's in without needing to really say anything! She's broken and not able to escape what happened to her.
Both Aang and Korra basically first saw/met Toph in the swamp!

@lil crispy I don't get what you mean? I'm just being empathetic and putting myself in Korra's shoes. Fact is, she has always prided herself when it comes to being physical and being the Avatar. Now with what happened because of Zaheer, her purpose was completely taken away. On top of that, she's dealing with the trauma (which is a thing) and not being able to physically and mentally be 100% as she used to. That's a lot to deal with.

This episode really helped me with dealing with my depression, some of the lessons are so powerful in this show, even the simple scene of korra getting the letters from her friends telling her how their lives are still moving forward and have went strength to strength with the reflection of her alone in her room unable to look after herself or write back to them feeling trapped and angry at herself hit me hard.
I’ve always felt like Korra suffered from PTSD from her fight with Zaheer and therefore is being haunted by it. That’s the whole reason why the possessed Korra has the chain wrapped around her hand and the use of mercury in the fight scene. It’s not the Avatar spirit trying to get Korra into shape again, it’s Korra having gone through the most traumatic event of her life not having dealt with or accepting it and she’s facing the consequences of it now.

Dingo dyno haha hopefully they will get it in the future episodes. I always thought that the writers could have done a better job introducing Korras struggles in this season but PTSD is a hard topic to handle in a kids show.

One of the best episodes of either show. This episode, Venom of the Red Lotus, and Beginnings are all The Legend of Korra at its finest. Also, Katara is the best.

Since you guys are done watching up til episode 9. I just wanted to explain episode 8 Remembrances. People usually hate on the episode for being a clip art ep but the reason is Nick actually did the dirty on Korra one last time.
Basically, Nick told Bryke that they have to cut their budget for Korra. Either they fire some animators or just do a clip show for their recap episode. Of course Bryke didn’t want to fire their animators who have been there since the beginning. So we have the clip show instead.
Remembrances was funny as fuck and we got to laugh at stuff that we always hated. The love triangle, (which was makos fault) unalaq, and several other things. And varrick? In love hes so damn funny.
OH WHERE CAN I FIIIIINNNND MY TEACHERRRRRRRR.
Right?! Not only did they take it off the air but also cut the budget! I remember hating on nick so bad during the airing of book 3 and book 4. This is why I hope someone buys the rights of Avatar and make a new series.
To the day, I've never seen this episode and Ive rewatched Korra over three times.

It pisses me off because that's exactly what it is. There's no hints of anything more until suddenly they twist with a "The where lovers all along!" I get what they were going for and I get that nickelodeon might have stopped them from showing any romantic development. But honestly I feel like not doing it at all would've been better with suddenly announcing that the only healthy platonic close friend of the main character was now also dating them. This after she dated every other member of team avatar. It felt less like a message about accepting homosexuality and more like a message that it is literally impossible for late teens or young adults to just be friends.
@@normalmighty Thewriters meant for it to happen all along. It wasn't a spontaneous decision. They knew that as soon as Korra and Asumi were both cut off with Mako, they're going to be together. It has been foreshadowed several times during Book 3 and heavily during Book 4. The music used at the that final scene with Korra and Asumi is similar to the one used at the ATLA final scene where Katara and Aang kiss. The music guy admitted that he was told to MAKE the sound similar and romantic sounding.
@@normalmighty They never tried to say they were lovers all along though. The final scene of them together was meant to signify them becoming a couple, and they got to that point after a pretty believable progression of their relationship throughout Books 3 & 4 imo
@@Nat4Brendan honestly I think the root issue is that I have mates that I'm as close to as those 2 were by the final scene, and absolutely strongly disagree that any of that was a hint of romantic interest.
Either that or there's a ton of sexual tension between me and my mates, and I'm not woke enough to see it.

@CogentPhilosopher I mean now we're diving into aspects of my psychology that are onlt tangentially related, but that's still nothing to do with gender. I just treat romance and sexuality as two sides of a coin. Sure you can technically have one without the other, but it's pretty damn rare for that kind of relationship to work out.

I do love Korra's journey through this series, this season esp. I do appreciate it when writers treat mental and health issues seriously. I mean it takes Korra three years and a bit to get back on track, to heal both physically and mentally. Even in a fantasy world. In many shows, it takes usually, a day or a fiery speech and everything is alright. And while the show admits it's up to her to heal, it's shown to be a long process and one when support from family and friends is needed. It's very realistic and mature approach and it warms my heart we have shows that don't dismiss it or shame people.
On another note, Korra writing to Asami, aww. It's so cute. This scene always makes me smile

If you want to compare Kuvira to historical figures, the one that always comes to my mind is Giuseppe Garibaldi,who played huge role in uniting Italy in XIX century.
Long story short: He and thousand of his man invaded Sicily and southern Italy and with help from common people took over the entire "Two Sicilies" and part of Papal States... but he didn't do it for himself. After that Garibaldi met with King Victor Emmanuel II. GG had basically 2 choices :1.Decalring himself a ruler of a new nation 2. Put his ambitions away and declaring Victor Emmanuel king of the Italy. And he chose second option, because he considered that good for the country.
Kuvira's position is pretty similar. At this point she's still only The Great Unitor. Her job is to secure the entire Earth Kingdom and give it back to rightful ruler-Prince Wu. Is she willing to do this? Well, that's her decision...I'm just gonna say that Victor Emmanuel II was a competent guy, Prince Wu... not so much.

Here we have another one of the best episodes of the series!
Korra's journey to a full-recovery isn't over yet, but seeing what she's been through for the past three years is very engaging. She apparently decided to leave Republic City, shortly after Jinora's ceremony. I'm sure she was tired of being a burden on her friends, especially Asami. Korra figured that she needed to walk this path on her own, but the path is littered with potholes.
There were quite a few callbacks and references in this episode, such as Korra's sparring match with the firebenders, which was a callback to the very first episode, right down to the music. Aang's goofy-ass picture was such a welcomed sight, especially when all we knew of his adult life, were his questionable parenting skills. Also, I'm sure we've all seen another story about a young hero finding an aged, legendary master from a past generation, living alone in a swamp (wink, wink).
Speaking of references to other franchises, this episode had a lot of similarities to Scott Pilgrim, of all things! Why Scott Pilgrim? Because, Dark Korra--or Nega Korra, as I personally call her--is an outward manifestation of her inner demons. To clarify, in the sixth and final volume, 'Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour,' it was revealed that Nega Scott embodied all of Scott's negative personality traits, such as being fickle to the point of being inconsiderate to others. In Korra's case, Nega Korra represents all of torment she endured while fighting Zaheer, which is why she appears as Korra did when she was poisoned and Hulked out. Basically, a walking reminder of the most painful and traumatic experience of her life. Just like Korra, Scott only made things worse when he tried to fight Nega Scott. Instead, he realized, that he had to STOP fighting and accept what he's been actively denying about himself for so long. As a result, Nega Scott stopped fighting too, and fused back into Scott's mind, causing him to remember the bad things he's done to other people (i.e. not telling Kim that he was moving to Toronto when they were dating, among other things).
Yeah, I'm sure it's merely a coincidence, but the similarities are undeniable.
Another thing I really loved about this episode when I first watched it, was Asami showing how much of a saint she is, as always. The girl was willing to leave EVERYTHING behind, just so she could stay by Korra's side and continue helping her get better! On the flip-side, after being gone for two years, Korra only wrote back to HER, and nobody else. To top it all off, Korra wrote that she didn't feel comfortable disclosing her deepest fears with anyone else, regarding her recovery!
Truly, a wonderful friendship... (snicker)

It's been a while since I've seen ATLA and I am re-watching LOK with some of your videos next to the full episodes. I really enjoy your videos and commentary. But what I also notice with the help of you guys (and also other reaction video peeps), is how great the creators are with subtle (or not so subtle) parallels to ATLA. Sentences, places, situations, stories etc. That's really, really cool and a true asset to the show. It shows how freaking great the creators are and how well they know their story and characters!

Not going to lie, when Toph called her Twinkle Toes, the tears were real
A lot of people think that Korra will be the only avatar for the next avatar to contact with but its not. There was a supplementary book (offical canon) about this that is some sort of a journal where Korra records all of her adventures and life lessons she experienced and planned to give it to the next avatar when she's already gone. She wrote a letter to the next avatar saying sorry, and explained that the Avatar doesnt just lost the conneection, but also the ability to connect with his or her past lives. So the journal is her way to somehow impart her knowledge to the next avatar.
