- These are the final minutes of "Goodbye, Cliff Barnes", the 26th and final episode (103rd overall) that served as the fifth season finale of the 1978-91 CBS soap saga "Dallas". The episode originally aired Friday, April 9, 1982
As revenge for dating his beloved ex-wife Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) , deceitful oilman John Ross, "J.R." Ewing, Jr. (Larry Hagman), through a shrewd business scheme, has set his arch-nemesis Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval) up for failure, resulting in his misuse of funds from his mother Rebecca's (Priscilla Pointer) company, Wentworth Tool & Die, for J.R.'s scheme. She in turn, fires Cliff from the firm when he confesses to his crime. Sue Ellen, who had been dating Cliff, dumps him for good when he tries to hit her up for money, and as a final slap in the face to fim, reconciles with her ex-husband J.R.
Despondent over the recent events in his life, Cliff attempts suicide by taking an entire bottle of sleeping pills. His on-again/off-again girlfriend Afton Cooper (Audrey Landers) finds him and gets him to the hospital, where he falls into a coma. Angered and distraught by the family's treatment of Cliff, Rebecca informs J.R.'s mother Eleanor Southworth "Miss Ellie" Ewing (Barbara Bel Geddes) that the dormant Barnes-Ewing feud is back on and will not rest until she has destroyed J.R. and Ewing Oil. Angered also at his lack of remorse for his role in Cliff's near suicide, Miss Ellie informs J.R. that she will lead the family into voting him out of Ewing Oil as the President. J.R. smugly informs her that it will not happen.
He then goes to the hospital with Sue Ellen to visit Cliff. She says that it is their fault that Cliff is near death and lying in his bed, while J.R. insists that it was Barnes' own greed and ego that put him in that situation. Sue Ellen then states that as much as she loves J.R., if Cliff should die, she will not remarry him, leaving J.R. fearful for the first time in this particular episode.
This season (81-82) Dallas' cliffhanger was far outshadowed by Dynasty's campy hoot. (Cecil dying in bed with Alexis during sex, Blake getting thrown off a mountain, and Fallon's baby getting kidnapped). Only one of few seasons though. Dallas is still the king of the cliffhangers.
Sue ellen was such a tease. Always reverting back to Cliff in order to make JR jealous.
Better than ''Dynasty'' most of the time. Some of the Dynasty ones were pretty cool too.
Supposed to be in ICU,but got more people coming in and out than the local Airport!
I guess after the previous two years this cliffhanger (no pun intended) was dissapionting but to me it's loads better than seasons 11-13 combined
Afton was just a hypocrite. she slept with JR but was always bitter at Cliff loving Sue Ellen more than her.
Linda Gray was definitely the BEST actress on Dallas .
The show would have been much better if it had stuck with these type of cliff hangers. But rating grabbing cliff hangers like Bobby's death and then return damaged the series beyond repair. In my opinion.

Cliff Barnes took an overdose because of J.R. and Sue Ellen. Now on the new Dallas, Cliff's daughter, Pamela, OD'd because of John Ross' affair with Emma.
