Without you Mr. Lee, we singaporans would not speaking English, able to clinch jobs overseas, have CPF, medical care and most of all, to be respected as Asians from SE Asia. We owe everything to you. It has been an honour to have you as my prime minister when I was a teenager. Thank you is insufficient to express how much gratitude Singaporeans feel towards you. We are so lucky. Thank you for the singapore today.

We actually started speaking English because when english schools were pushed into the system with schools that taught in the various mother tongues, parents had a preference for english schools and mostly sent their kids there due to the fact that they got better jobs when they graduated.
LKY said so himself that he could not pass an edict that mandated the enrolment into schools that taught only in English.
Trampling on language sensitivities would have meant trampling on the cultural identity of the people and would have certainly have been met with severe push-back.

Singapore is an amazing country. To have achieved so much in such a short time is quite remarkable.None of it would be possible without Lee Kuan Yew's vision for a nation. May he be remembered for his dedication to his country and its people. A true Father of a Nation.

Many years ago he was at a university overseas. After taking a few questions from the audience he said’ as much as i like answering yr questions and learning i would like to hear from the singaporeans here. (Obviously there were many in the crowd). He continued’ i want to hear from you because you are my responsibility’. Wow. What a leader!

When the late Mr. LKY and 1G took sgp to independence, there were very few talents among the population. Majority were uneducated immigrants from all over Asia and SEA living in squatter huts and squalid conditions. They could have been corrupted, like many other leaders in this region. Our parents n grandparents would be none the wiser. 1G could have enriched themselves, their families, relatives, friends etc. Cronyism, favoritism, nepotism, insatiable greed and corruption could have been the order of that era and culturalized by now, as is the case with many countries. But they didn’t. On contrary they set up a culture against the grain of those malices mentioned above. Not only they did not enrich themselves, they lived personal lives frugally and runned the country just as frugally yet competently beyond anyone’s beliefs and hopes. SGP is indeed blessed to be gifted with such selfless men n women at our birth. Thank you Mr LYY, GKS, TCC, LKS, S RAJA, HSS, JYT, O Wok and all the top civil servants of that era, without whom, our sisters and mothers could have been maids in other countries and our men, laborers! Not forgetting thank God for gifting sgp with such men!

Majority of Filipinos are already brainwashed by western propaganda. Everything western is good. Therefore LKY policies will definitely not work. 9:06 Indians are always asking for 'advices' in almost all international forums and conventions. This lady herself had cited Mr Lee's past advice to India (of separating politics with religion). Question is: HAVE THEY DONE SO?
And as messy as India was when they became independent, or perhaps even worse of, HOW MANY 'INTERNATIONAL' ADVCIES HAVE THEY GOTTEN AND COLLTECTED?? Do they even need more??
The problem of 'India' is that THEY ARE QUICK TO RUN THEIR MOUTHS, BUT NEVER THEIR EARS IN LISTENING AND THEIR MINDS IN DETERMINING TO CHANGE THE REALITY. All talk, no action.

"I have no doubt they want a peaceful rise (this generation) but the grandchildren may think that they already arrived and want to flex their muscles and New York will have a very different China".. same issues with South China Sea, China say to respect Freedom of navigation by air and sea in SCE, but in 20years times, when these "grandchildren" comes into power, would they remember this or would they questioned why ships are passing thru and r not getting approval? And this is among the reason why the respective countries contesting the south china sea wont give up.

Lee Kuan Yew is why no matter how small Singapore is as a nation, it will always be greater in nationhood, intellectual and moral integrity than China. A superpower whose power apparatus is entirely opaque, where leadership can calcify into permanent status, where electoral absence removes accountability and alignment.
China can potentially succumb to bad leadership and bad direction. Even right now, the regulation on education does nothing to alter the nepotism and elitism that pervades the divide of the rich and poor.

13:48 I have a lot of respect for Mr Lee but this comment about Shanghai is not quite right. Shanghai would be prosperous regardless of its status as a direct-administered municipality. In fact being a prosperous hub was the premise rather than outcome of administrative intervention. Its relative economic advancement (vs other Chinese cities) in past century is probably more attributed to its strategic location, bolstered by a historically wealthy hinterland of the Jiangnan region.

On the contrary, she gave him an excellent opportunity to clarify PAP's stand and his own philosophy on governance. He made clear that he'd rather bet on the incompetence of the opposition party to govern the country in one term then allow sg to be drag into a violent civil unrest. To allow revolution with consent rather than revolution through violence. He was trying to prevent what happened to Hong-Kong now, from ever happening in Singapore. So I'd say catherim lim's question is not as silly as you think it is.

    • @MikeyJJJ

I think her question was silly only insofar that she seemed preoccupied with a military takeover. People, especially Singaporeans, should remember that the vast majority of our military is manned by national servicemen - a civilian military made of people like you and I - and we will never raise our weapons on one another, no matter who the commanders are and what they say.

When MM Lee spoke and relate his experience on how China reacted on Lee Shien Long visit to Taiwan, it seems to me that MML did not really understand China's sensitivity on the issue of Taiwan. The country has gone through a 150 years of humiliation when Japan, British, France, German etc occupied various parts of the country, utterly an unforgettable humiliation to the Chinese. This renegade province shall not be taken and be treated as a separate 'country'. It is an act of challenge to its sovereignty.
