In this PLAYLIST I have gathered all lessons about the very same standard chord progression as we use in this video. The different lessons give you different approaches and ideas on how to play and improvise over the jazz chords: • A Standard Chord Progr...

Hi dear fellow Musicians :) This playlist is a collection of NewJazz lessons that all show different approaches on how to play and improvise over the very same chord progression as used in the lesson above (a standard sequence of fifths in Emi): th-cam.com/play/PLd8gNAxPUcJzqwqL21s9NExEKpk14bglb.html
Enjoy :) Many regards from Oliver Prehn
You’re amazing
your a genius, I have studied Jazz theory for years, and I never heard it explained so simply. Big inspiration!...thank you for what you do
There are very few youtubers that repeatedly gives the viewer shivers down the spine with a innocent looking jazz piano lesson.
Thank you!
I think you can read my mind... I just used this technique to improvise a piece of music. Very bright and harmonic. I learned from one of your previous videos. But that one focus on the melodic minor scale, so that I had to do some research myself and modified the pentatonic hand grids to triads by moving my thumb down by one full step for major scale... This kind of research is crazy but super fun! This video is certainly a great link between left hand and right hand technique. This one helps more people to improvise easier without additional steep learning curve. Thank you again Oliver!
Oliver you are an angel hearted teacher no one really make things easy like you👍🏻 god bless you🙏🏻
Wow ! What a beautiful sound ! I never thought it was so simple. You're such an awesome teacher. Thank you so much.!
You are the best teacher I've ever had.
Your inspiration is divine for me. You're a splendid and gifted person. Thank you!
You have made me love jazz all over again.
Now I understand why I like Carlos Santana so much. Thank you so much and keep going with this series!
Wonderful. I'm not a pianist, but the clarity is so great for any instrument. Returning to the shed with renewed enthusiasm. Thanks.
You managed once more to bring something so simple, which is yet so powerful. These 'outside' patterns are great to move to the next key in a chromatic way. Thank you for this, it really moves me into playing it!
Fabulous. Will try this on guitar too. Super useful. Thanks.
Gracias y bendiciones!!!
Fantastic! one of my new favorite channels on TH-cam, bravo Oliver 👏
THANK YOU FOR THIS! This is helping me now to break out of a rut in my guitar playing. I apply this on guitar and I'm getting sounds I've never gotten before. So good!
I also applying on guitar. After 2-3 days of his video, I am now able to sound a bit jazzy..
The very best teacher ever. Thank you very much Oliver.
this is one of the best channel to learn jazz. thank you
Fantastic !! One of the biggest frustrations is to start to sound jazzy. With this technique jazz sound is literally in the palm of our hands. Thanks a lot.
yes, yes... YES !!! Once more an interesting learning curve to expand and explore... With you - Oliver, the quest to improvement is a never ending journey... But the long way is made of milestones that brings us skills, techniques... and more that all, real fun and happiness !!! I love it so much... I'm really a big fan of you wise teaching... Chapeau bas Dear Oliver !.... From France !
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! :) :) :)
Olivier, you are an amazing teacher. Thank you very much for your great work.
Amazing, well done! I love these and I'm a guitarist. Take one small shape (eg. Coltrane 1235) and move it around the neck playing major triads over all types of chords for inside and outside sounds. One interesting observation is that all the chords can take a triad pair (the triads separated by a maj 2).
Will Kriski Yes Oliver is the best at simplifying hard concepts and finding original approaches. Thanks for pointing out the triad pairs, I think we could memorize the first triad of the M2 pairs in relation to the chords of this Autumn Leaves progression as follows: b3, tonic, tonic, tonic, b6, b5, 4 right?
Extraordinary lesson as always Oliver! Thanks a millons
I am not surprised Oliver, You are simply a MASTER instructor! I am not a PIANO player but it is a very helpful and handy concept that works for all types of instruments. Great Job and keep it up.

why is it that so many Europeans, especially Scandinavians are so relaxed in Jazz music ? (unlike so many populists from USA, sorry but this is the truth, there is so many crap. Listen to Scandinavians (ACT and ECM samplers; they are the real jazz ambassadors. You are a good teacher and musician.

Great stuff Oliver, just discovered your channel, we need to learn the grips for all the chords in all keys, not just the example, the grips need to be applied in all playing situations, jazz standards, etc, so a lot of practice to get them all under your hand, when performing
Excellent! Thank you.
I know the Theory long Time, but never get it realy to work in practical, either on Piano or Guitar. But thats my Key from now on. Thx Oliver!
Thank you Oliver!

Dear Oliver. You are truly a Godsend Angel! Your spirit and the way you are approaching music and teachings are priceless. God Bless you!
P.S. Were you able to cut working hours at your driving job? I was doing lots of day time jobs including driving trucks before I joined the famous rock band Scorpions- playing bass.
..So I know exactly how it feels. Peace to you my Brother! Pawel Maciwoda
Thank you so much!!! Only driving about one day a week now - and it's actually a good thing, getting out among other people (otherwise I just get too weird my wife says). LOVE your bass play!!! Cheers Oliver
GRACIAS ECXELENTE!
Grande maestro dtb
Excellent!!!
Огромная благодарность
Thank You !!!
Toujours génial !
Bonjour vous me rappelez David Sprunger Merci vous m'encouragez a y croire et a continuer...
Great as always. Few Q's: What numbers would you apply to this progression? Starting key? Format for the outside positions? (step above or below?). Thanx
Hi and thanks a lot :) Well, the chord progression in use is a very standard progression of descending fifths (taken from Autumn Leaves).
Often when I do outside positions with triads I do them a halftone above or below the next triad position.
In this other lesson we do some specific licks on the very same chord progression and we also use the triad technique after about 12 minutes: th-cam.com/video/HnYQYR2-JuU/w-d-xo.html
Cheers from Oliver
You are a beginner and you want to sound like a pro in a couple of month? Just take a good piano and Olivers jazz theory videos. And than jam all night long :-)
Dear Oliver,
Thank you so much for boosting my musical career.
I love your method. But I wonder how you manage your left hand to choose and construct your chords ? Thank you for your answer if you do it.
Hi and thank you so much :) The left hand chords are explained in this other lesson: th-cam.com/video/hACDMj5QGZY/w-d-xo.html
Cheers from Oliver
@@NewJazz Thank you Oliver, I'm going to see it soon. Cheers.
This is the same question i had. Thanks for the answer. Slowly but surely it all comes together…thank you Oliver!
Thank you!!
bravo, Excellent
Génial tes cours vraiment. Merci.
Just a question, i Will try in english.
Wy can we play thése différents hand grips ( G, C,D ) on the chord Amin7 for example? And wy only two on D7 ( D, E ) ????
Thanks à lot.
Hi and thank you so much. On the Ami7 chord we use the Dorian scale and 3 major triads fit Dorian (share the same notes). On the D7 chord we play the Lydian dominant scale and only 2 major triad fit. You can learn more about the scales in use from 11:05 in the vid ;)
Cheers from Oliver
Hello Oliver. I find this approach very good, but I also find it really very difficult to memorize all of these positions. Even if they look a little alike, and we find the same intervals, it's still quite difficult to put them in the hand. Isn't there a memotechnical way to better remember the different positions on chords? Thank you.
Hi :) I must admit, this lesson is quite advanced. The mnemonic rules are different for each type of chords, so we place the triads at certain positions when doing mi7 chords - and at certain positions when doing 7 chords and so on.
Try, for a start, to play only two chords repetitively; like B7 to Emi7. It's always much more fun when doing it simple -making it sound good from the very start. When you are ready add the F#mi7b5 chord and so on...
@@NewJazz Thank you very much Oliver.
Hey. Have you made a tutorial on how to solo over a blues scale? Thank you:)
Hi :) In this lesson we improvise over a 12 bar blues and we use a hand grip that gives us the blues scale, and more...
th-cam.com/video/3TOeDWaOAQA/w-d-xo.html
Hello Oliver. I have a little doubt about the "half dim" mode that you indicate on the F # m7b5 chord. Wouldn't it be rather the "Super locrian" mode (altered mode)? Thanks. This lesson is great.
Hi and thanks :) On the F#mi7b5 chord I play "F# Half Dim"; f#, g#, a, b, c, d, e.
This scale shares keys with the G#-altered scale also called "Super Locrian". Cheers from Oliver
Hello
Are you using The Grandeur on this video?
If yes: What is your setting (the bass is very good
Hi :) I’ve exported my settings to an "nki" file: www.newjazz.dk/xtra/Grandeur_settings_NewJazz.nki
I hope that you can make it work :) Cheers from Oliver
