You do make an interesting point. When I started work in the early 70's one weeks' wage was £10. However, in today's market you do need to consider the prices other manufacturers are charging compared with Hornby. I think Hornby are demonstrably overcharging.

I agree on your point about the second hand market,I am also conscious regarding money, and I have been very very lucky in my choices and bought well.
Especially regarding wrenn's out of my fleet of 22,I have had 1 dudd one, now(spares) countless hornby and Bachmann.
Also if one is into that sort of thing,American diesel units and carriages, fantastic value for money, most sound fitted,...oh and exquisite Korean built brass American locos and caboose.no one really wants them in the uk,so again, bargains.enjoyed the video excuse my waffle 👍

I would not worry about the lighter shade on the suburbans. That first BR red faded badly which was part of why they chose a new colour.

Subscribed, only just found your channel and this is the 3rd watched, really like your videos so far, the talking style, layout n models etc.
I made a video not far from latest upload list partly calked 'modern RTR Nope-outs' etc where I do a similar thing n show wgat 2nd hand loco's you can get online and it's a similer vein as your video's. Dunno if it'd interest you but think it might.
Like yourself I like the modern and older loco's for different reasons and with modern new prices going nuts I've been buying lots of childhood 'wants' in recent years too.
Loads you can get for £30-50 if you keep the eyeballs out!

Hi Richard ,, i didnt even know there was full brake vans in the teak or gresley .. do they have a model number or an R.? Number so i can get 1 (or 2 haha). Were they a real thing or were they just something hornby triang did ?
You learn something new every day as in you have taught me there was a full brake van in gresley teak (if that what its called).
You are right were you say just be patient where buying is concerned.
I myself have learned this too. I bought a loco drive flying scotsman and when the guy showed me it running I could hardly even hear it and it runs as smooth as the real deal but it was dropped from around 4 foot off the ground and broke the front left of it off. The next one I bought had a blown motor but in near perfect condition so i done a body swap and now have a perfect runner for less than $60/aus and a real stunner to look at.
You are right about what hornby said as in while ebay still goes there will always be trains to buy as different circumstances and life changes so there will always be trains for sale.
    Awesome layout you have there.
I also like and subscribed too.
I look forward to seeing all your vids.
    Cheers from John in Australia.

    Hi richard
    Hope you are well
In my review I have say how much I paid.
But yes 2nd hand prices are ok I guess depending on what you are after
Some big box shifter 2nd hand prices are too high in my opinion
    But great video
    Keep safe arp

Hi Adi, all well here, thanks. Hope you are too. I agree about some secondhand prices - I tend to avoid the over-inflated ones. I see some "Buy it Now" prices that are extremely optimistic, and guess what, the item is still for sale months later!

Sounds like a good excuse to bring out an overpriced "Limited edition". I'll stick to my railroad version that cost less than £40 secondhand and runs beautifully.

I'm not sure I understand your annoyance or frustration at people calling out the high hobby costs, this is probably my fault. You seem to suggest that people calling out the ridiculously high new-buy prices are just "doom merchants" and that you can buy things cheaper secondhand, especially if they are older....
1.The facts are that new prices are much higher than before and increasing well ahead of inflation year on year. The youtuber Eugene on his channel EuviRail did an excellent episode on rising prices demonstrating the hugely excessive increases over recent years.
    2. You used an example of pocket money kids buying a loco back in the day where as now it's salaried adults doing the hobby instead, and they still can't afford it!
    3. Of course secondhand is going to be cheaper, that's not a revelation or an argument about the new prices being too high! However, the rising new prices will drive up second hand prices too and this will be exacerbated when people can no longer afford the new prices at all and secondhand items then become even more sort after!
    4. Secondhand items are often in need of upgrading with various worn or defective parts needing attention. The parts/spares again are too expensive and make buying secondhand not quite the bargain it sometimes seems! P&P costs are rising dramatically too which will only add the the situation.
If your general observation is you can be happy with what is available secondhand rather than new then I agree. However, anyone pointing out the facts about the excessive new-buy prices is right and should not be labelled in a derogatory manner. The increasing prices could actually kill off the hobby and so "doom" may well be appropriate!
I do suggest that people should boycott paying the crazy new prices in order to force the manufactures to reduce their prices. It's the only way. I guarantee that they will stop charging silly prices if people stop paying silly prices! It's supply and demand.
    Regards Julian

Hi, thanks for your thoughtful comments, and I don't deny that new prices have rocketed, though there are still some much lower prices around provided you hunt for them. The last brand new model I bought was a Bachmann C1 Atlantic, weathered by TMC, for £129. I have rarely spent more than that. Without doubt Hornby and Bachmann products have gone up by well over the rate of inflation, and are very expensive nowadays, but I've heard people say that they cannot afford to buy brand new any more, so they are being priced out of the hobby, which I think is a bit too negative. Until a couple of years ago, when both my children had finally left home and were financially self-sufficient, I had very little disposable income that I could justify spending on my hobby. I rarely bought brand new, but it didn't stop me from loving the hobby just as much.

Boycotting buying expensive (comparatively) will just hasten the demise of the big manufacturers and their big range of models. You will be left with the small manufacturers with just a small range of models and a very high cost second hand market instead.

    • @theeventhorizon-valebridge9512
      @theeventhorizon-valebridge9512 ปีที่แล้ว

@@wyvernmodelrailway Actually, that is utter nonsense, sorry to be so blunt! I completely disagree.
They seem to have you well and truly taken in with their ludicrous prices..... and making huge profits!
The big manufacturers sell their items to the retailers at a set low price already. It's only the RRP that is set stupidly high, deliberately, for two reasons.
      1. To give the retailers a good profit margin if cash rich people want to get in quickly and bag a new buy.
      2. To still give a built in margin for large discounts from the retailers so that they can have their "Sales" and make the items more appealing to purchase.
Some retailers have been caning it in in recent years, making really obscene profits. Now that the poor economy is biting down on sales, more retailers are discounting even the relatively new releases!
eg, I've just purchased some newly tooled Bachmann class 37s and 47s with 35% off, £245 for SFX Sound models, making them cheaper than Accurascale's latest!
So, don't tell me that if people don't buy at the high prices the companies will go out of business. Absolute twaddle! They will just stop inflating future release prices and encourage their retailers to discount straight away.
