This movie was probably done on a low budget, but what a great movie! The plot, the characters, the humanity. I saw this movie as a kid and liked it. Now retired and having been kicked around by careerists this film resonates even more.

I saw this film years ago and couldn't quite remember what happened in the end, I always thought it would of made a great play, picture was awful though but still a good story.
This movie is based off Robert Cummings appeared in “The Twilight Zone” episode titled “King Nine Will Not Return”. In this episode, he portrayed Capt. James Embry (credited as Bob Cummings), a pilot of a downed World War II bomber who awakens in the African desert with no memory of how he got there. Worrisomely, his crew is nowhere to be found, and he begins to question whether he’s hallucinating. The episode originally aired on September 30, 1960, and is a captivating blend of drama, fantasy, and mystery
@@JohnPiperBoots With that time frame I wonder if it was inspired by “Lady be good” ? I think that B-24 was found about then and the crew had bailed out then walked 100 miles before all dying. One crewman is still missing. And one crewman was killed in the bailout. His chute did not deploy properly.
@@zrunner240Z Yes, it’s the B-24 that was found broken in half in the desert. The crew had bailed out thinking they were over water. All but one of the crew have been found. One crewman was killed when his parachute failed to open properly and the others walked over 100 miles over 8 days before dying. T.J. History recently had a video about this aircraft. If you go to Google images there are photos of the crashed bomber. I think it was found in 1958.
@@zrunner240Z Thanks for putting a name to a statistic. So often we forget that these were people. My uncle went down with his ship. Given that it was not a famous warship and just a 10,000 ton Victory Ship there have been no attempts to ever find it. So there was never real closure for the families. Missing is worse than dead as this film alluded.
This was a great idea for an episode of The Twilight Zone, but to be drawn out to a two-hour tv-movie, there wasn't enough here to justify the run time. The cast was good though and I did like the story of the sole survivor. Richard Baseheart did a good job playing the survivor who abandoned his crew, working hard to hide his guilt, forcing their souls to seek justice.
@@rosiegary I understand. I'm familiar with Lady Be Good backstory from WWII. In that case the plane was a B-24. The plane from this movie seems similarly situated at the B-25 in The Twilight Zone episode.
No. That episode was shot on Edwards AFB, along the Southern edge of Rogers Dry Lake. This area looks familiar to me, as I have worked in the Mojave Desert for a long time. I believe it was filmed at El Mirage Dry Lake Bed which is NW of Hesperia and the Hwy 395 and East of Palmdale California. Further research has confirmed that is where it was filmed.
Unlike movies made in 2024, this made for TV movie with William Shatner and Richard Basehart was a low budget film that was exemplary and entertaining. No WOKE messaging or preaching; just a riveting storyline and great acting.

Have not seen this since it first aired 54 years ago.
Is this Rod Serling's set piece from "King Nine Will Not Return"?
the film is based on a real plane that disappeared the rod serling dont think it was based on the same plane
