      @@MrBons1Million Have you subbed at schools where they spit at you, cuss you, throw stuff at you, fight, or talk about anal sex during the class, make homemade bombs, put hand sanitizer in your coffee mug?? And the administration would kiss their butts and sign up with them, not teachers, because they are afraid to be sued?? That's their time to get back at adults and teachers when the sub comes in. Stop spreading nonsense.

    My experience in HS & Middle school were absolutely not just sitting at the desk. The kids are not even reasonable quiet which is all I ask. I can’t have the noise level so high it can be heard in the hallway. Also, they don’t want to stay in their seats. I’ve had boys who insisted on “sparring” during class & refused to sit down. Many kids are mean bullies who are quite intimidating. Some are bigger than me which is extremely intimidating. Aside from the terrible pay (depending on where you live) the only benefit is the schedule. It helps that I am already married.

    This is an insult to all the substitute teachers who have to go into schools and classes that no one wants to teach. Usually this is because there is a system of chaos in the school. Often substitute teachers receive little support from admin. It can feel like riot control, all the while being at the mercy of another teacher's game plan which was concocted in 5 min.

    • @MrBons1Million
      @MrBons1Million  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I didn't mean for it to be an insult. I know first hand that elementary and middle school subs can be very difficult cus subs don't get support from admin. It can be like that too for high school subs, but it's often less (not never). And I don't go back to classes like those. My purpose for this video is to get more people to be subs so they don't get short-staffed and ask subs to do more than they are expected to. I usually choose the good school and classes to minimize riot control.

    • @MrBons1Million
      @MrBons1Million  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yay!! Congrats! You'll be great. My biggest tip would be to not take things too personal with the kids. You are only there for a few hours, don't get confrontational with them. And then explain to them that you would get in trouble if they do this or that. If you say that this is your first time at the school, they are usually very welcome. And have fun. If you have a good time, they will too. Students love having subs in the first place. Just don't ruin their expectations and it'll be good. Good luck! @SongsbyCharleneApril

    I wanted to be a math teacher but school officials, particularly the DOE, discouraged me from chasing my dream. I also recall CUNY guidance counselors discouraging me from pursuing my academic objectives. This was all done in an effort to keep certain minorities from reaching success and job security. So, I did others things with my life. Now at 59 years old with three college degrees, I find myself working as a security guard making peanuts for a living in a dead-end job. How about that for a story?
    Note: I also worked as a sub teacher in NYC for 8 years (2000-2008).

  • @Improveathletics

    Subbing is easy. I do it full time. There is always work available. My rules are simple. Be respectful and get your work done. As long as they get all the work done on the sub plans, the rest of the day/period they can have free.
    I can also work whenever I want. No bringing work home. No meetings. No lesson planning.
    Show up. Follow the plans. go home.

    You are not doing the job properly if this is a typical day. Try actually teaching and do laps of the class to check they all understand and are on task. Sort out conflicts and problems. Give feedback to the teacher and prepare for the next lesson ahead of time. Check rolls, the school email and messages. And do make sure the room is tidy at the end. This is misrepresented and of course there will be no sick or holiday pay. ☑️

    • @MrBons1Million
      @MrBons1Million  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I agree with doing laps and giving feedback, but most subs do not teach. How would they teach a foreign language or physics? Teaching is expected in elementary and middle school, but not in high school. As for preparing for the lesson, it does not take that long if you don't teach. I don't think I'm misrepresenting it.

    I’m a certified teacher. Hate subbing. Kids immediately disregard you and the class when they realize their teacher isn’t there. You’re being tested by kids all day and even teachers! Both groups try to bully you in some way. I didn’t set up the room myself so I usually hate it!! I don’t know where anything is and it feels very dysfunctional. Teachers leave crappy plans, tech plans, or give stupid info but not what you really need.
    This is probably because I’m a teacher but it sucks honestly. I do it for extra cash when I have time off from my main job. The pay is also horrendous for what I’m expected to do, $20 a day where I am.

      @MrBons1Million  4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Wow, that's crazy! $20 a day? That sounds illegal. And everything you just describe is absolutely correct. Nobody respects you as a sub. But I feel that you are caring too much as a teacher yourself. My only job there is to keep the students in class for the period. I don't care if they don't do any work. If you just care less, your job would be a lot easier, but I wouldn't do it for $20 a day. That's just ridiculous.

    Laziest job in America?
    I don't think so... consider how many jobs politicians hand out to their buddies/family members who never show up and still receive a paycheck! 🤔
    Your critique of the substitute teacher profession is spot on!
    You do not get paid enough to take on causes like correcting/influencing student behavior. Certainly going into dangerous schools or classrooms is foolish!
    There are plenty of openings to select from. So, "cherry pick" the best districts, high schools and classes (STEM, CAAPA and business academies).
    A few points you fail to mention...
    (1) You can take advantage of the all the free time because every classroom has a staff computer and internet access.
    I was a NASDAQ stock "day trader" while subbing.
    (2) You do get the freedom to pick the days that you want to work. Being a professional ski instructor by trade, I only subbed on winter days when I had no private lessons.

      @@MrBons1Million , not really. It's a sub standard non living wage. I barely make it & have to rely on public assistance to get by. McDonald's drive thru workers make more hourly than we do. It's a crock really. We don't even get a cost of living wage increase each year. We need to get unionized, but we have too many old farts who sub who are double dipping earning money to supplement their pensions so that's what makes it hard to organize.
      I hope I don't have to sub much longer, but it seems like once you get sucked in and start substitute teaching it's hard to get out. It's almost impossible to teach fulltime without going in debt for that damn teaching degree (I already got one useless degree - don't want another one. lol) and there aren't many decent places to work in this Rust Belt town.

      @@MrBons1Million , I do not know. I have tried different things but nothing has stuck. Either the place closed or management sucked & didn't want to train me, etc. and I found myself out of a job. I would like to get certified to teach, but don't want to go in debt to do it. I applied for Teach for America, but got rejected with no explanation. (They say only 20% of apps get accepted & most people have to apply 2-5 times before getting in.) They said I can apply again next year.
      One thing that might work is if I can find a decent paying job than just do one of the cheap online school options at nite so I can get certified to teach.
      Thanks for offering to give me financial advice, but I live really frugal & am pretty financially literate. I just don't make enough money. That's my problem.
      They treat substitute teachers like we are disposable and as you said in your video there really is no career advancement once you start substitute teaching.
      I have a good summer job I love though & I bring in a little money on the side selling mostly new and vintage toys and action figures on Ebay though. So those are bright spots in my life.
      I imagine someday I'll find a job that doesn't suck or find a way to teach full-time and get a teacher's salary as opposed to making peanuts as a sub. I taught English abroad in South Korea. But honestly I'm too old now and I got a dog. I don't really want to teach abroad again. (Not at this stage of my life anyway.) Need something more stable than that.

      Yes, it can definitely be tough to get paid a liveable wage. Maybe you can consider moving to California or another state that has more opportunities. I know school districts here need subs and they pay well. Consider it. I can help you get started if you decide to move. You can actually apply first and move after you accepted as a sub. You took the time to plan & edit this video & didn't find your content inappropriate at all? Did you ever pause and think about what kind of message you were sending? I agree with many people here that this video was insulting. You're supposedly an educated person & you're basically saying you're lazy & not putting in the work (and worse letting everyone know). This isn't professional & I don't think parents, teachers, etc. would be happy to know this is how you view & treat your job. Many districts would frown upon this sort of thing. Some even have policies about not using your phone when inappropriate to & to be careful about what you say about your district etc. You're also not transparent in that this only relates to your choice of working at high schools & that how they operate makes it for an easy day for you. This video isn't a good review of what it's like to substitute teach in a general sense. Your specific experiences are very limited & you're just seeking something easy instead of something that will be rewarding, and challenging for you to help you grow and learn from a variety of experiences. You aren't in this for the right reasons if you're only seeking out good pay for little work.

    • @MrBons1Million
      @MrBons1Million  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Wow, you are so pessimistic. Are you a teacher or another sub? But let me clarify some of your points. 1. I did say that this is high school only. Lower grades require a lot more work. 2. In terms of transparency, Believe it or not, this is what most subs do.
      As for if it is appropriate, yes it is. Despite the 5-8 commenters who point out what you said, I've had just as many people commenting about being a sub. There is a shortage of teachers and subs so do you think that people would consider it if I said that being a sub is hard and rewarding? I've had more success getting sub applications with this video than people saying that it is rewarding.
      Also, this video is for people who are struggling either financially or are trying to find themselves. There are people out there who just need some time off to think about their next job and being a sub is a good transition for them to do that.
      If you find this video insulting then you probably put a lot of work into being a sub, but this video was never meant for you. It was meant to get more subs to help schools and to give struggling people options for extra income.

      I'm sorry to hear that. I've been subbing for about 8 years now, on and off, and most of my experiences have been similar. I only sub for high schools and I only get hired by the school district so I don't know who Kelly is. There are definitely bad schools that I avoid, but I generally don't have any major problems because I don't pick fights with them by trying to be their boss. This is inaccurate and an insult to substitute teachers. Subbing for elementary school is not a lazy job, in fact, it's a rewarding one. You are really involved, though it's the original teacher who makes the lesson plan, you carry it out. You also sub for the teacher, so you marshal the students on their schedules, deal with emotional concerns and being tactful in handling very young kids. The kids also love you, give you gifts (origami, food from cafeteria they don't want to eat, and write thank you notes to you). Also, if you only sub for high school, there's a risk of getting less consistent jobs. I personally sub for all levels, and the elementary ones are both exhausting and rewarding. Middle school can be tough too. Grade 7s lack empathy, tactfulness and self-control, you have to deal with them, especially in serious programs like the Puente program where you have to make sure they do their work.
