@Ashtma - Do you have any empathy for the victims he robbed at gunpoint, the additional trauma they may have suffered because he “had to do what he had to do?” There were others like him living under the same conditions who did not resort to carrying out armed robberies.
@ My empathy comes from what environment Ismael was in that drove him to Robb people at gun point. If the case was different I would have to question his actions. Don’t put people in desperate positions then question their actions.
I was born in Somalia and believe me his story is most shocking I have ever watched. And as a Somali, I want to thank the canadian journalist and the Norwegian government. We, as Somalis, thank you.
The thing about living or coming from Somalia is that the hardship is physical, and when you come to this side of the word, it is totally different. You are safe, but the mental hardship starts to take root and it just gets worse. Suddenly, you will find yourself having the time to think about everything and feel it. It wasn’t like that in somalia, it was always one thing after the other and u never had the time to overthink it. So I think I do understand what he means when he says “getting my arm and foot cut was nothing compared to what I went through in Norway”

Regardless of how people may feel about his dishonesty, the fact remains that Ismael endured hardships no child should ever experience. He learned early on that growing up in a dark environment often means you can’t afford to be a good person, you have to adapt to that darkness to survive. It’s clear that’s exactly what he did. Unfortunately, people with that kind of upbringing often become master manipulators and develop narcissistic tendencies as a way to navigate the world. So before you judge him, consider what you might have done in his position.

I believe he may have changed his story out of concern for his family's safety or other reasons. It doesn't necessarily mean he was lying initially; he might be trying to protect others. He might have been trying to protect others if the story changed after his visit to Somalia.
