    1. use contractions
    2. Connecting words and pronunciation
    3. Leaving some words
    4. Focus general topic to understand
    5. Consider different accents

I found this video is useful for me. And the answer for your question is I found it difficult to understand the native speaker, when I listen to an unknown things. For example, In my office when client give me training to a new project, I feel it difficult to understand. (when they use new words and technical terms)

I think the hardest thing is to understand native English speakers when they speak naturally to each other because sometimes they use "idioms" that don't exist in other languages. Thanks so much for your wonderful lesson!

The most difficult situation for understanding is interviewing for getting a job. Now, I know, that it can be for the stress for understanding every word and not the general meaning of the sentence. Thanks a lot for the tip.

I used to have a lot of trouble understanding the spoken English in most movies. For some reason, they always seemed to mumble instead of "speaking clearly". That's why I always turned on the subtitles so that I could understand everything they were saying. However, now I realize that by doing this, I was only making it harder for myself to understand natural spoken English. I was growing too reliant on subtitles, but unfortunately, real life does not come with subtitles. That's why these days, I no longer watch movies with any subtitles whatsoever. Whenever I don't understand something, I just watch that part again and most of the time I will understand it the second time.
One of the things that has helped me the most with my listening skills is learning about weak forms and how certain consonants such as "T" are often not fully pronounced by native English speakers. Being aware of this made the "mumbled" English I often hear in movies suddenly much more understandable. I have also started using weak forms in my spoken English, which has made me sound much more like a native.
I really wish I had been taught this in school, but unfortunately we were only taught the "proper" i.e the full pronunciation. It is only on the Internet that I learned about weak forms vs strong forms.

Nice answer +Glim Glam! It's good that you've stopped relying on subtitles. I think it will certainly help you as you continue your studies!

I fully agree with you. I still use subtitles, perhaps too much. But as you say, real people don't wear subtitles under their chins while they speak to us. Hahahaha.
My problem is that I don't know people in my town to practice face to face.

    Hi,
To answer your last question, it was when I was working in Nigeria (please note that I am French). I often had a hard time understanding part of my contacts. The second most difficult experience, at first, was when in New Zealand. But I finally got used to that specific accent and, on the whole, it was by far the Nigerian accent that gave me the hardest time. I sometimes was in over my head!

Teachers at OOE.Really informative video for people where this language is followed text-book based, like India. That's because, most students and professional having minimum or no international exposure tend to believe that the classic British way of the English language is the symbole of excellence. You all teachers are wonderful and explain to us that the really beauty of English is its dynamism.

Hello from Moldova, Im in and still trying to learn english, increase my knowledge and so one. So the bigs problems I have hade before it was with the foreign speakers of english language. Regarding to that for me its quite difficult to understand when a person from Asia or Europe ( Germania, France) even and UK speak to me in english. Obviously they have a diiferent accent of speaking, the speed, tone..etc. Despite of that, they have a perfect english pronunciation, accent, but its familiar with their area of living and using the local vocabulary.
Otherwise, when I had a conversation with an american native speaker or canadian one its easier to hear the words they share, the contruction of their sentences. From now I could try to do more exercices of listening methods to understand more and more easily different accent around the world ! Thank you for this video and I hope it could help other people who wants to understand more effectively listening skills ! Bye for now ! :)

Thanks for the very helpful video. When I speak in English with someone over the phone, it is especially difficult to understand what they are saying. I have difficulty to grasps whole sentences or just to catch short words which I would have been able to do so if it was talking in person.

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, James it can be hard to really understand over the phone because you can't see the person. It's even difficult for native speakers at times, but it's good listening practice. Thanks for watching!
