    I agree with you and Diana. When I was young I was assaulted. My mother's bishop told me that if I didn't die in the assault then I hadn't fought hard enough. Even as young as I was that created a hate in me. I told him that if he considered my only worth and honor was centered in what was between my legs, then I didn't want his honor. I didn't want to be seen as worthy to him and his kind. If they preferred me dead rather alive and abused, then I didn't prefer their consideration. I am worth more than just my vagina.

    This was a beautiful, intense, heartbreaking episode. I just adored it. Because it felt like Outlander, and the book really came alive.
    I full on cried when Bree said to Claire the same thing Lizzie said to her.
    Just give Sam and Cait all the awards. Claire’s “shattered speech” and Jamie’s “kill them all.” Chills.

    Thank you for your review- I agree wholeheartedly. The episode was intense and heartbreaking but so wonderfully acted. The use of the alternate universe was brilliant. I was literally shaking watching the scenes...Sam and Cat both deserve best actor awards for this season. Slàinte!

      Amy Angell That was my thought when I finished but someone pointed out to me that the drums were brought in in the very beginning when they are recapping the last episode. That drumbeat between the scenes.

    This episode has been mind-blowing for me. Phenomenal performances by all the actors, especially Cait and Sam. I was actually cheering when Jamie said: "Kill them all;" and Marsali killed Lionel. But, I was over the moon, when they included my favourite Jamie line: "When the day shall come, that we do part, if my last words are not I love you - ye'll ken it was because I didna have time." Love all your reviews, looking forward to your Outlander content during Droughtlander. Take care.

    I think this whole season had precious and powerful moments. At the end of season 4, I was doubtful there would be a future for the series, in spite of the amazing finale. This season for me, for beyond the citations and the events themselves, in different occasions was able to encapsulate the spirit of the books and its characters. Above all, Jamie Fraser came back in all his glory (even with that horrible wig during Claire's "dream"!). In this finale they even showed some skin, for heaven's sake, it was so beautiful to see Claire naked with all those bruises...
    Anyway, the quote from Jamie voiceover comes from The Fiery Cross very first page. Many cuddles to Sam to be able to say the things he says and never sound ridiculously cheesy.

    • @TheBookRefuge
      @TheBookRefuge  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes. His voice over was amazing. James Fraser is still King of Men in my heart.

  • @aprilmarshall6570
    @aprilmarshall6570 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I agree that having the MacKenzies try to travel early was a cheap trick. They should have included the discussion between Roger and Jamie about "knowing if the child is yours." I think that would have given the ending so much more punch, but was effectively filmed. Thanks for a very thoughtful review.

  • @JaimieJo

    Great review Jenn! I thought the episode was really well done! A lot of care went into the making of the episode. I loved how they did the 60's home as Claire's mental refuge. I really didn't want to see all the gory details. So I'm happy they did it this way. Whoever did the makeup did an excellent job! My heart was breaking just seeing all the bruises and damage done to Claire. And the acting was so definitely Emmy worthy! What a powerful episode! I was totally hooked from the first minute to the last! I even had my tissues next to me this time! And I was saying, Kill them all, along with Jamie! I also cheered Marsali for giving Lionel the death shot of water hemlock! She's really been a wonderful character.
    I got it right on the round trip ticket through the stones. All the crying I did last week for nothing! Powerful episode!
    I've really enjoyed this season. I think having Sam and Caitriona as co-producers has made the show a lot better.
    Thank you so much! I'm glad I found your channel! I'll be here watching your droughtlander material. In the meantime, I'll probably do a re-read of the entire series.
    Have a great week! 😊

    While watching the finale I was thinking the exact same thing you said in the beginning.."They can make this, why did they not do this all along!" This quality in direction and creativity, the dialogues.. was all amazing...loved every minute of it. Caitriona and Sam were so so good I was crying the entire time.

      Sahana Arani I think they(Producers fixate on certain big, quote “book moments” they want to go for and feel if they put them into the season they are good. When in fact what fans want is strong, consistent storytelling accross the board. In season one and to some degree season two, that is what they did. The mold is not broken, they don’t need to fix it but rather follow it!

      Sahana Arani Lets Star with Caitriona’s performance, what an amazing actor she is. She embodies the character in a manner that is nothing short of masterful. Next, the stunning 60’s dream escape sequences. I saw where some thought they were overdone, I couldn’t disagree more. I think it was Matt Roberts Idea and it was a stroke of genius. I’m often critical of Matt’s show running buts it’s only because I want him to do better. I also loved Marsali avenging Claire and protecting her family by ushering the vile Lionel Brown our of this world and hopefully to hell!.
      What I didn’t like was the choice to show the men lining up to rape Claire. That didn’t happen in the book and it wasn’t needed here. It felt gratuitous. I also felt at an episode time of 50 minutes, they took 10 minutes from us which could have been used to give the episode a little more time to breath. But all that said, I would give it 5 out of 5 stars. Episode 512 is Outstanding Television. Caitriona Balfe is not human.

    Your reviews of Outlander are the best on youtube. You show the emotions we all feel about these books and attachments to these characters whether in the book or on the series. I do watch other reviews and they just don't get it. They refer to the books without remembering even close to what actually happens. We all know these are book characters but it doesn't change the feelings these characters instill in each of us. We love them all and want the series to stay true to that narrative. Adding, subtracting scenes and plots go for it just don't damage their heart.

  • @NCEduConsulting
    @NCEduConsulting 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Your review was great -- thorough and spot on. The only thing I can add is that I was also moved by the performances of Ian and Fergus. When they all came for the rescue, Jamie wielded his sword and reminded us of Prestonpans; Ian was the quintessential Mohawk warrior; and Fergus, even one-handed was slashing with a vengeance. I will never forget their facial expressions when they saw Claire's beaten and bruised body and the tears in Jamie's eyes. When Myers offered her his knife to wreak her vengeance and Ian and Fergus replied that they will kill for her too -- I was overcome. Ian and Fergus did an excellent job of showing their shock and distress and their love and devotion to Claire.

    you did well! hardly any crying. my notes pretty much agree with your thoughts. something from last week i may have already said, would a man like lionel brown let his wife say no? anyway...
    claire's "fortress of solitude" was so well done. the show people did good. all the imagery. was that a painting of the big house on fire? the leaky roof. I remember jamie going up in the middle of the night maybe to fix a leak, but i'm not sure that was the reference. jamie's clothes weren't modern like marsali and everybody else. (it would be strange to see jamie in a 3 piece.) I loved hearing "just the two of us now."
    it seemed like a waste of time to have the mackenzie's not go thru. this episode was so good, i'll just not pick on that.
    this was one of my favorite parts of the books. I think what's wrong with me liking something so awful. now I know i'm not the only one. "kill them all." I remember getting shivers the first time I read that line.
    I need to take a break. I thought I had more to say. I may get back to you later. thanks for doing this.

    Short hair Jamie surprised me and all the little bits of throwback in her disassociation was a perfect way to play it. The psych out with Roger/Bree/Jem was a cheap shot but it was a quicker way to give them a moment of drama and didn't take away to much time for more important plot. The size of my grin when Jamie said "kill them all" OOOOOOO so happy with a tinge of short lived guilt. Things happening to you is different from things being done too you. Marsali is season 5 MVP! I believe the voice over is the prologue of TFC? Ending on safe was *chefs kiss*. I hope all this extra time gives the writers time to really refine season 6 and make it strong.

    Hey! I made blackberry whisky for myself last Christmas, and that's my sip of choice now! How about that? Splendid review, except that Amazon didn't include the warning we should all have had. I have to watch the episode again and re read the Chapter in 'Breath of Snow and Ashes'. They couldn't have had Murdina Bug kill Lionel Brown, because so far they've not mentioned the French Gold at all, insofar that it involves Jocasta, beyond her grief at her daughter's death. But Marsali was the obvious choice and portrayed it brilliantly. I'm still needing time and space to recover! Thank you for the review, and I may well go back and watch your previous Outlander reviews (if possible).

    You said how people love these violent crisis episodes the best, and that the show does them the best. I think this show does every kind of episode wonderfully!! And I don't think we love them the best because of their subject matter. I think they stick with us and we never forget them because they are so shocking and traumatic. It's not that we love them, they just affect our psyche so much.

    So... I'm new to your channel but I love that you are reviewing both the book and the show together. I, of course, am very literal with the book and it disappoints me so much when the show takes such liberties. To me this should be the easiest show in the world to act, direct, and film, because basically you just open up page one and star. The dialogue is all written there for you, the action scenes are all there for you... Anyways...
    My criticism of this episode is because of the reasoning behind why the Brown's did what they did to Claire and also the whole scene from Jamie getting his vengeance or or the whole vengeance scene against the Brown's. I too believe that the Dr Rawlings story is just not plausible enough for people to go to war about, or to pick a fight with a family on the ridge. If they had stuck with the fact that this was a personal attack on Jamie himself for not joining their marauding policing of the area, they could have sold this better. And also I really really missed Roger playing the bodrum. In the book you could just see the men sitting around the fire laughing, and gloating, and carrying on... then you hear drums... And they're getting closer... And you can't see anything, it's total darkness out there... And then the assassins fly out of the trees and start killing everybody. That's what needed to be done in the show. I didn't feel that Highlander rage and savagery.
    And I felt like the whole Bree and Roger - last episode saying goodbye wasted opportune minutes for screen time for something else, and then they cheat us by not going back (although they didn't go back at this point), I just feel like we lost so much story that could have been there... Again, open the book and just film from the book.
    But I was glad that we were able to get some really great moments. But yeah... I mean they just should have stuck with the whole reason behind why the Brown's were after Jamie to begin with.

    • @TheBookRefuge
      @TheBookRefuge  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree! The Whiskey was already introduced and mentioned and the Browns new about it. It would be extremely bold for them to charge into Claire's surgery to take her from the Ridge, rather than having her be away from the house.

    The police officer who gave Claire the bad news about Roger and Brianna in her fortress of solitude was Lionel Brown, could it possibly be that even in her fortress of solitude the badness she's experiencing is creeping into her mind. Also I recognised Isaiah (the actor) in the line of the six men who harmed her being killed by Ian or maybe I'm hallucinating, it's not unusual to use the same actors for multiple roles.

    I was brutally raped & sodomized at age 12. This was by far the hardest thing I ever watched. It was raw & real. Cristina B managed to show how rape cuts a person soul into peices that can only be healed with time and love.
    Took me years to get over PTSD and years of fighting the family of the man who destroyed my childhood.
    If this episode does anything I hope it shows men how strong we women really are. You can destroy our flesh but you cannot destroy out hearts.

    What do you think the show will put in season 6 from the book?

  • @AKMorehouse
    @AKMorehouse 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    While like you I have a lot of critics on this season as a whole I thought this episode was was done really well, and is a good episode to leave off on (especially because this is probably going to be the biggest droughtlander we've ever had). I really appreciated the book parts and the nods to prior seasons and episodes. In addition to the nods you mentioned I thought it was really sweet that Bree told Claire exactly what Lizzie told Bree after the night with Roger and later Bonnet: "You have my hand [Mama/ Mistress] and my ear if you need it." I felt like it showed how important Lizzie was in helping Bree get over what she experienced, and her desire to be that support for Claire.
    Also I thought the show they tacked on to the end of this episode was a very odd move by Starz. First off this show left me (and probably others) feeling a little raw and I just wanted to take a moment to digest what I just saw. Secondly, the themes of Hightown and Outlander are vastly different. It felt like something that should have been tacked onto Vida or maybe Power since those shows may have more of a cross over audience with it than Outlander. If it were a show like Black Sail or Spanish Princess I could see more audience cross over and would have been more OK with it after an Outlander episode... but not this one.

    Also I have not posted thoughts anywhere cause I can't even form them and I watched twice now once at midnight and then is am as I was getting ready for work and still. Other then just totally understanding and agreeing with Sam had been say the press tour long and other times about this being the best season and finale, outside OG season 1 of course.
    Thats like my only coherent thoughts. I saw some of the Easter eggs. I watch several reviewer's and have read several posts and realized I missed some. I think it's interesting to see the show starting to explore the blood feuds that are a part of the Scottish culture. It definitely is a part of the Appalachian Scottish culture for generations and is interesting and sad to study as well. I learned of it from reading and watching christy by Catherine Marshall. The book is the true story of her mother who went into great smokes to Scottish community in 1910 to teach school. She deals with a community set in there way and set back in time where tradition and superstition governor life. But I will finish after all is said amazing amazing job best yet baring OG season 1.

    Apart from the brewing storm, there is still also the menace from the burning of settlers and their homes that plays into the hope that comes at the ending that Clare might make it "intact" into the future and life at the Frazer's goes on. It was very responsible of Stars to display the warning and sexual assault hot line for survivors of sexual assault. Often, if not always, scenes of sexual assault will trigger a survivor and cause them to experience the trauma all over again. So its important to stress that prior to a program that displays violent sexual assault.
    Regarding Ian, in that time period, he would have been in the army and most likely on leave from Vietnam. Since he had been a warrior with the Mohawks, Claire sees him as a warrior in her disassociation also.

    • @TheBookRefuge

    • @TheBookRefuge
      @TheBookRefuge  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The love scene is from book 6. And I wouldn't quite call it a love scene. They get very drunk and kind of fight their way through it. Its raw and harsh and full of love. I can see why they would want it to appear more gentle in the show.

    Thanks for the great review. This episode was tragic yet so beautiful as well. The love Jamie has for Claire is every woman's dream. If what I hear is true that in a future book Claire thinks Jamie is dead and has to move on with her life, I will be just heart broken to see that depicted, the acting is so well done and I don't think I will want to see that scene.

    “Yeah Lionel, this was a good idea to piss off Colonel fucking Fraser who’s tight with the governed! That seems like a great idea.” Haha. Great review! I love how you express your emotions and passion for the books and the show and share from your heart, and I love the intelligence and wisdom you bring to these topics and stories ❤️ Thanks for reminding me of the symbolism, most of that went over my head! Do you think the abstract painting was of Fraser’s Ridge? It was so beautiful seeing Murtagh alive and well and with Jocasta (show version wise) and I loved Marsalli’s hair in the seventies, also interesting that Jamie was still wearing a 18th century shirt. Could you speak to the part of the inner sanctuary scenes where she finds out Bree and Roger were in a car accident? Is that because things got too horrific in her real experience that it invaded her sanctuary?

      I was also thinking of you when they had Roger step up and into his nobility and character as a man. Between that and Bree and Roger not leaving, I thought you’d be happy with this episode! I do think the painting was of the burning house. Great images, very powerful.

    They did have the producers segment, you had to hit skip at the end before the credits ended, if you go back it is in the season 5 clips, also I’m thinking that The Breanna and roger not going back to the future is a way of explaining why others end up in different times when they go back. Galus ended up going back further then Claire even tho she went through the stones 20 years later. Otter tooth ended up in another time then Donner. So what you’re thinking has a lot to do with where you end up.

I was so happy that i was right that they didn't go anywhere, but kinda thought it was a waste of a storyline, but maybe it was to tell Ian? I also think that the fire will be a Brown induced situation. At first i thought it would be a way to fake their deaths so they don't have to fight in the war, but now maybe not? So in the series they haven't said what year the fire is but the book says Jan 1776 and we are in 1774. But the war is 78? Ok and side note, did you pick up that Donner and Otter Tooth went through in 1968? Same year Geillis went through! Does that mean they've been stuck in the past for over 20 yrs??? I'm assuming next season will be about Donner, the Gold, The Browns and the war? Thoughts?

    I think they wanted to go to the future for safety for their kid but their hearts seek so it didn't go anywhere... also possible that their son is special and can choose where the stones take him as opposed to just going where the stones choose... he is born from two travellers

      I know what they are trying to say with it. I just don't agree with it. They aren't this eager to leave. And to risk Jem for no reason.. Time travel is freaking dangerous. They do flip back in forth a bit in the book about leaving, but never to the point of making that very long journey just to turn right back around.

    Is one good episode worth the damage done to the story? There are so many pieces of this story missing or derailed, that could have and should have been done, this may have been one of them, but there is so much they could have done, so much material with the quality of this, they should have used, and instead they made up and used inconsequential fluff derailing the story they should have been telling. It is hard for me to forgive them, considering the quality of actor they hired, the quality of the first two years, and the quality when the do get it right. We know they are capable of telling the intensity of action that is in the story, it makes me ache to know what they could have done, and did not, I find this very hard. The faint to send them home then not, infuriates me. What waste. What fakery. It so depresses me. Thank goodness, I have the books.

    Not really bothered if they make season 6. There's no more time travelling. It's lost its magic. No more Scottish Highlands. We'll probably never know the real story about Jamie's ghost. And midget who played Stephen bonnet was huge disappointment. He didn't have the screen presence. No wonder they killed him off early. There's been few good moments in season 5. But I think overall it's lost its way. Jamie go back to Scotland. Then somehow travel through the stones with Claire to 1968. Watch the ratings go through the roof
