There use to be a lot of stores in there. There was also lots of local businesses there too. Also, water fountains that would shoot up a jet of water. Leather Ranch. Radio shack. Candy stores. IMAX. HMV....so many gone. Probably of the rent and crime in that area.
Before portage place was built, there used to be buildings that stood there. My girlfriends moms brother had a health and supplement store that stood there and the city robbed him and only paid $150,000. Thats 1985 money so $384,285 today. Turned out, after portage place was built, it was worth a little over $100 million. Now, True North wants to tear it down and build 2 buildings where one is for low income housing and the other a 24 hour clinic and all provincial services.

I used to work there years ago, yes lotsa empty stores there now. How sad. The imax movie theater used to be on the 3rd floor too.
