I need some help. Why does the red LED keep coming on on my GDEMU and when this happen it either freezes up or resets my whole DC. It does this on the GDmenu screen and also during game play? Please someone help
@@dustyshoopman845 probably sd card read error. Could be bad sd card, needs to be reformatted, or could be gdemu is not seated perfectly. Not much else it can be from what I understand.
@@Madlittlepixel thank you after watching you video again you were having the exact same issues I am having. You said that some SD cards are not compatible and that you just went out and bought a different brand one and have had no other issues. So I am returning the card to the guy I got it from and he is going to build me a new one on a different brand card. Hopefully that will work. Thank you for your reply and keep making the great content on TH-cam I love your videos and have learned a lot from you and have bought a lot of stuff based on your videos. You're awesome 🤘
@@dustyshoopman845 ah ok, yeah been a while since I did this video so didn't remember everything I dealt with at the time, but I'd say most issues are because of the sd card.
Dreamcast is a cult console that i fell in love since it first came out in 1999, i'm happy to see accesories and games comming out 20 years later, a timeless console. Thanks for you review.
SD cards and old consoles, a match made in heaven.
For roms just look for GDI rips. GDI are direct rips from the original GD-Rom. CdI rips are the GDI rips that then were cut and compressed to fit on CDRs if needed.
I installed it yesterday following your guide. Very easy procedure and easy set-up of the micro sd. I use both cdi and gdi formats. Everything is working great! I feel like a child in Christmas period!!!
I vaguely remember people using a reflashed hitachi PC drive to do the original GD-ROM dumps way back in 1999 if somebody wants to go down that rabbit-hole.
Looks like a great substitute in case my disc drive crashes someday. Thanks for showcasing!
One thing thatis not mentioned in most of these videos on the GDEMU is the fact that it's highly remommended or even necessary to remove the voltage regulator in order to keep the power supply from running real hot or insert a 1 watt resister between 12 volts and ground.
Most people can't solder so it's not truly a easy not soldering required process.
Next time set it up with GDEMU SD CARD MAKER - it takes away having to manually set up stuff. Super easy to add new games and change any descriptions etc..

So I just got the 5.15B model and need some help. Why does the red light keep coming on and why does it keep freezing up or resetting my DC when the light does come on?It will do this both when I am scrolling through games or trying to play a game?
Where can I find gdi, roms or however the files are called for this GDEMU system?
The best way to ensure you get good rips is to get the Mame Software List set of Dreamcast games. They are in CHD format but they are easily converted to GDI.
Pretty cool! I wish in the early 2000's I would've racked up on all Dreamcast stuff when our Toys"R"us went out of business. The GD definitely seems like a good investment 👍

I always thought that there would be power issues with this being as the optical drive draws more power but great to see its stable.

What About the Power Supply Mode where you remove the voltage regulator because with the GDROM Removed it does not draw as much power so the power supply or voltage regulator runs hotter or stick a resistor across 2 of the pins to simulate a load so it won't run hot?
there are 2 versions gdmu 5v and 5.5v?? with gdmu i need memory card to save (because i haven't) when i play or save in sd card??
What do you think about the need for a resistor Ive seen 1 guy say it heats up and you need a resistor to keep that from happening?? Any take on that?
Been on the fence getting one of these. Love the Dreamcast but it’s a pricey add on. Maybe if the cd laser ever goes out I’ll get one. Hopefully the price drops. At least it looks fairly simple to install. That’s always a plus.

Why does the Crazy Taxi Disc Label Image look like a 45 RPM Record?
When I reset with the controller, it goes back to the dreamcast Dash. if i start the game again it will simply load the game that was just playing. I can't go back to the GDEMU dash. I have to reboot the console.
whats the biggest sd card that it will see ? and also how do you update the firmware on it ?
I hope one day we'll get a drive emulator that doesn't require taking the functionality the original. I love my PSIO for that reason.

Aww man! Your title had me excited for a moment there thinking maybe a new model or different product came out that was actually available! Regarding the "cheaper" clones? I've bought 2 of them. 1 SORT of worked. For about an hour. (Cost $140 + 15 shipping) Then fried the SDHC card I had installed. RIP my only 256GB card... ($85) and the other one (cost: $100, free shipping) didn't work at ALL. Bought that one for a friend, ended up eating the loss on it due to bad hardware. Didn't get refunded in either case, so now I'm out $340 and refuse to try a 3rd time with the clones. The actual GDEMU has been unavailable for order since 2015. I check it frequently, and it hasn't changed. Basically he's out of the business now.
FTR, one purchase (the cheap clone I knew was a clone that didn't work at all) was off eBay from a long-term reseller with a good rating, the other was from a gaming supply site that sells mod chips etc (a well-known one but I've had good results with them in the past so I don't want to name them in case this was a fluke incident) - in that case they specifically told me to contact the Chinese supplier who had sent THEM a fake unit (which turned out to be what was wrong with it? Dunno, it burned out and took my SD card with it so no way to test that) and gave me (alleged) direct contact info for them so I could ask for a warranty-covered replacement... which was never replied to, of course. It's not my job to contact your supplier, either. Besides, they'd likely just send me another fake one. I'm lucky my Dreamcast wasn't hurt! Not installing another fake one in mine. But oh well, I'll just take my business elsewhere and not use that site anymore. Still, I'd really love to find an *actual* GDEMU unit. Or a new version that's actually actively developed and can be fixed/updated by the creator.
Artemis Kitty Were the dreamcasts VA01 models that you installed them into??
Where do you get the screwes if you can't getvtje original and have to buy the clone that is way easier to get? The screws that were in the Dreamcast don't work, the top one is not long enough and the 2 in the middle are not the correct size or lenth for the holes they would go in.
Anyone know how to exit a game and reboot back to the GDEMU menu without turning the console off and back on? I tried abxy + Start and all it does it reset the game or send me to the bios menu. I tried the combinations with the left trigger and nothing. Pushing the button next to the SD card slot also sends me to the bios menu. I have a clone if that has anything to do with it.
my question is how does one rip the discs? i know he said to source them but what if (and it's not a joke i promise) we have a collection and just wish to rip to preserve the games in case and still play on official hardware?

The renaming of the games wouldn't be a problem for me, cause it's the same kinda mess on the Wii with Nintendont 😅
The site you listed also has the Saturn equivalents. They are the Rhea and Phoebe.
Have you to modify the 12v line after install it?
Can you confirm if after installing this mod that you aren't experiencing overheating issues in your Dreamcast. I have seen a few forum threads that say you need to modify the 12v line off the PSU to stop the unit from overheating once you remove the CDROM.
Have the GDEMU in my dreamcast. No overheating issues but i leave the disc lid open while playing.
GL1TCHGURU I have a Noctua Fan Kit nice with my Dreamcast 20$ easy to install no heat issues

My brothers got a Dreamcast. Had it since they came out but he doesn't have many games. I wanna get one ASAP. I heard u can play burnt games on the Dreamcast pretty easy also but having an SD cart slot is better forsure.

theres software you can use that makes the renaming and order of games easy google madsheep's GDEMU SD CARD MAKER 1.04 oh and you can use a 256gb sd card on this thing sandisk works
damn fat32 means no games over 4gig am i right ? ... did the dream cast even have anything over 4gig ?
GD-ROM stands for "Gigabyte Disc Read-Only Memory" based on the maximum capacity of 1GB. Fat32 limitations shouln't be a problem
The actual GDEMU units go for $400-600 easily on eBay, and genuine units have not been available since 2015.
I've had particularly bad luck with the clones myself - one died and took out an SD card, the other didn't work at all. And that one wasn't even from eBay! The fake one sold as genuine was. And then fried my SD. But hey, YMMV I guess... I just wouldn't trust them after having 2 units both fail on me along with the SD card, costing me $340 total.
Artemis Kitty The real units are for sure hard to get, but theyve been available.. Just gotta keep an eye out. There was an order about a month ago for the legit GDEMU i got on that list and paid for it a few weeks ago.

I kinda want one know. it's just kind of pricy for me and that waiting list. whatever the DC plays burnt cd's fine. I herd there is a fake out out there but only stuck with one firmware. but if all the games work then it should be fine right. IDK where to even find that one.

They need something like this for the PS1, I'd buy it in a heart-beat.
PSIO is what it's called. The pros on that one is that it also keeps the functionality of the original drive, so you can use that as well as playing genuine copies. If the PSIO is plugged in, it'll boot to the menu, if it's unplugged it'll operate as a PS1 normally would. Downside is that it requires soldering a chip to the bottom of the board, as it cannot work on it's own since the parallel port doesn't have access to the drive. It only took about an hour as someone with very little soldering experience and I'm extremely happy with mine!
I'm surprised you didn't use the sd card maker program. It's drag and drop. It even sorts them by name for you and automatically does the file structure for you.

only games that are compatible when patched - sadly there are just some games which cannot be patched to VGA no matter what method - example Last Blade 2.

Playstation classic doesnt play dreamcast very well at all, if your wanting it for dreamcast this is the way to go, if you want ps1 or other older retro games, psclassic is amazing to mod.

My question is how do you get gdi files with the games you already own? I burn my games and only get a .cdi copy not the .gdi format.. hope someone can help I have a decent amount of Dreamcast games I would like to use but not sure how to get the .gdi files with all the raw audio files included.

My Dreamcast has a problem properly detecting my GDEMU. When i power on the console, the GDEMU light will flash once to let you know its on. but sometimes it read and other times it don't. But after watching your video I think it's the SD card

Does this work with all versions of dreamcast?
It only works with VA1 Dreamcasts. Look at the bottom of your Dreamcast. If you see a 1 in a circle, you're good to go. If yours is a VA0 or VA2.1, it's not compatbile with GDEMU.

People always try to cheap out on the SD Cards and thats where most of their problems come from. I've never had any issues with Sandisk brand, so its worth spending a bit more for the quality cards.
I really wish something like this was done for the PS2. I know that OPL exists, but how about a solution for Slim owners that find USB loading still pretty slow, especially for cutscenes (it uses USB 1.1)?
SMB with a crossover cable makes it superfast for my slim
@@seganerdtv There's also MC2SIO to load games from the Memory Card port, from what I discovered, and it loads surprisingly better than from USB.

DontPaniku One with a faulty drive would be fine especially if its really cheap. But if the internal power supply board is damaged or the motherboard you risk the GDEMU not working.

The issue about cards is a know thing in the PC space .... they have different ratings for speed i think 10 is the highest so get a SD 10 card

Christopher Galloway Not very often. He just did a order like a week ago. Just gotta keep tabs on his site. Typically announces whats being sold next and a time frame.
The problem of this is that it´s virtually impossible to buy one of them. The guy open the list few times per year and in less than an hour it´s full. You need to be checking compusibelly the website to get in the list or prepate to pay an overprice on Ebay for a mod that is not cheap (if you are lucky enough to get in the list). I got bored trying to buy this and the mod for Saturn. The guy should start thinking seriusly to change the selling model otherwise it will never be a real alternative such as everdrives are for 16/8 bits consoles.
