18:40 small correction there! Rosado wasn’t the first man to use a female base model, Forrest was! His troubadour and strategist models both use female base models. He just uses the male model if reclassed into anything else. Because he uses the shortest fem model at base, he suddenly jumps in height if he’s ever reclassed into anything outside of troubadour or strategist
There are actually more gender-locked DLC classes than were mentioned in this video! Awakening has Dread Fighter for males and Bride for females. Fates has Ballistician, Grandmaster, Vanguard, and Lodestar for males plus Witch and Great Lord for females. Interestingly, Fates also has Dread Fighter and Dark Flier as DLC classes and while they were gender-locked in Awakening they are no longer gender-locked in Fates.
Great video Ghast! But small inaccuracy at 5:57 : Machuya isn't the first female axe-wielding unit. Lachesis can wield axes after promotion in FE4. Granted, there is absolutely no reason to ever do that in a game dominated by swords, but still.
It's so silly that the Dark Mage line is male-locked in Three Houses, and then the best actual user of Dark Magic (which very few characters even get at all) is Lysithea.
also, out of the four units who naturally learn dark magic, only one of them is male. the majority of dark magic users are female, yet the class that specializes in dark magic is male exclusive
And it's also dumb that War Master is locked to males only, especially since the replacement for Hilda as an enemy unit is a War Master, but she can't be one herself.
The dark cavalier class is also a very desirable class for Lorenz because of his adapt talent in both lances, horseback riding, and black magic but he can’t become a Valkyrie, or a male equivalent to a Valkyrie.
I still find Houses makning the base game brawling classes gender locked pretty ridiculous. Even with War Cleric it always feels weird trying to use a character like Catherine as a Brawling unit outside of just using gauntlets with unintended classes. Oh and also welcome back, glad to hear the land lord boss battle was successful.
All the gender locked classes in 3h were kinda silly. Like why is Dark Mage male only when only 1 male unit even uses Dark Magic compared to the 3 female units who use Dark Magic. To me it always felt like the gender locked classes were just made gender locked for the sake of it, there’s no actual reason male units can’t be Pegasus Knights or Valkyrie’s but the game said no, there’s no reason female units can’t be Hero’s or War Master’s but the game said no. Side note it still kinda weird how Pegasus Knight was still gender exclusive in Engage for no reason again, like why even bother making it gender locked, it’s a base class that no one’s gonna go into.
@@banbanthebandit4002because it's explicitly canon that Pegasi don't allow men to ride them unless they are passengers. There *is* an actual reason for Pegasus Knights to be gender locked. I think the way Engage handles it is the best way to have Pegasi adhere to the lore without leaving men out entirely by ditching Falcon Knights and replacing them with Griffins, which would be nice to see going forward for the series. Sky Knights in Fates have the excuse that they aren't riding Pegasi at all but some kind of Hoshidan specific creature. (The Japanese only DLC class for Minerva is the proper Awakening style Pegasus Knight) Everything else though is entirely arbitrary like you said. I am 90% sure literally the only reason Dark Mage is male only is to ensure Hubert is the only player unit who would get any use out of it for whatever reason since otherwise Hapi and Lysithea would be clear choices for it.
It always bothered the hell out of me that Dark Flier and Valkyrie were -both- female only, with how dominating flight is in the game. It feels like it makes my boy Hubert just needlessly knee capped even more compared to Lysithea/Hapi/Constance.. also that 3/5 of the DLC classes were female only- though I don't much count War Cleric/War Monk because they're the same class, just gendered (for some reason).
@@JacobNintendoNerd99 The canon excuse, which came up as recently as Warriors, is itself pretty damn arbitrary. Outside of being somewhat heavier on average, a saddled male rider presents no real difference to their mount. Given the heavy lances and limited plate armour some pegasus riders carry (see Sumia for instance, whose mount could fly just fine while dodging javelins with both her and Chrom on its back), a slightly heavier rider doesn't hold up as an excuse. And it's obviously not down to any assumption about the rider's temperament or ethics either. For temperament, compare Clair to Ashe or Ignatz (nothing against Clair, she's a good person, caring and dignified most of the time, but you can't look at her more snobbish or short-sighted moments and tell me she's more mild-mannered than those two). For ethics, compare Aversa to ALMOST ANYONE ELSE. I don't think the designers meant to imply any offence or anything BTW, they likely figured pegasi are a more traditionally feminine image and rolled with it as a series tradition after that. But the idea that a pegasus would refuse a male pilot because "reasons" makes as much sense to me as the idea that a muscular woman swinging an axe as frontline infantry is somehow 'impossible'.
15:39 I believe Siegbert, Xander's son also has a personal based on gender, and it's called Gallant. "When user is the support unit, if the lead unit is female, the lead unit’s damage +2." Speaking of Fates... technically speaking Felicia and Jakob join time being based on the Avatar's gender is also a gender difference... even though both will join you eventually... that counts, right?
Male Pegasus Knights actually exist in fe3, but only as enemies. They have a different sprite than the female ones and wear a helmet. This is notably a bit weird since there are no named characters at all that use it.
IIRC male Pegasus Knight can sometimes appear in skirmishes in Three Houses as well, using the generic mercenary class icon given the male units were never intended to use it (not unlike Hilda's female War Master replacement from Azure Moon).
@@Faerghastadding to the above, this is retconned by FE5 which started the "Pegasi can only be ridden by women" thing and 11/12 made sure to retcon the instances of enemy male Peg Knights to be female in line with this
It's ironic how the "definitive" dark mage class in 3H is objectively the worst male-locked blass and is just a stepping stone for Hubert to reach Dark Knight
This discussion made me realize that Idunn was the first female dragon/Manakete to become a final boss. Until finally Rhea comes in and continues this long forgotten "archetype"
One notable difference in Gaiden and Echoes that wasn't mentioned is promotion levels. In general, melee classes can promote starting at level 7, then 10, then 10, and magic and flyer classes can promote starting at level 12. However, female mages are different. In Echoes, female mages can't promote until level 14, and in Gaiden they can't promote until all the way to level 20. This is, of course, unless you use some kind of patch (the Echoes remove gender lock class patch is really good).
Slight correction about Fates' personal skills around 15:20. Siegbert's Gallant anf Forrest's Fierce Counter are also gender depemdant. Gallant requires a female as the lead Pair Up unit, and Fierce Counter requires a male enemy to initiate combat Can't say I blame the oversight since Fates' kids' petsonal skills are often overlooked, but I figured it should be pointed out since you remembered Sisterhood and Daydream.
I AM BACK WITH A BIG TRIVIA VIDEO!! Thank you all so much for your support! What is YOUR favorite gender quirk/difference in Fire Emblem? Any of yours I didn't mention in the video itself? I hope you learned something fun!
There is, I saw a playthrough where Warp Ragnarok was Lodestar Ush and is funny cuz the Teleport sequence plays but withou the camera angles so Celine just point blank tps and shoots
I think the gender differences in Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes are also a pretty big thing to note as there are some pretty stark differences, though it is a spinoff and not mainline, and also the wikis SUCK for this, so I don't expect anyone to talk about it lol In terms of classes, the Pegasus Knight, Falcon Knight, and Gremory are locked to female units. While the Brawler, Grappler, War Master, Dark Mage, and Dark Bishop are all locked to male units. The unique classes of Saint (though it is just a female variant of Mortal Savant with unique skills), Armored Lord, and Emperor are exclusive to female characters. And the unique classes of Death Knight (A version of Dark Knight with enhanced abilities), High Lord, Great Lord, Wyvern Master and Barbarossa are exclusive to male characters Due to how the weapon ranks work in Three Hopes, you unlock a class as you unlock the next level of weapon rank depending on what weapon that class uses. (IE, an advanced class that uses axes will unlock B rank axes). However female classes don't learn any classes that wield gauntlets aside from the beginner Fighter class, so instead they will automatically be given A+ in gauntlets when unlocking Great Knight, Wyvern Lord or Bow Knight. This also means that the skills learned in these classes are gender exclusives: For Pegasus and Falcon Knight: Their class abilities of Alert Stance and Alert Stance+, and the learned skills of Pegasus Knight's Ploy, Pegasus Knight's Wisdom, Darting Blow, Harmonious Specials, Sol, Speed Catalyst, Tableturner, Muster and Item Expertise. However, the two lance combat arts learned exclusively by that class, Stormblade and Lance Jab, can be taught to any male character by Ingrid. For Gremory: Their class ability Bow Breaker 4 is exclusive purely to their class, and their learned skills of Flare, Magic Attack Range+, Defiant Magic, Ice Assist, Fire Assist, Dark Assist, Lightning Assist and Light Assist. For Dark Mage and Dark Bishop: Their class abilities of Miasma Δ, Impair, Cavalry Buster 3 & Lv 4 are exclusive, with Miasma Δ also being exclusive to male characters excluding Lysithea. Their learned skills are Dark Mage's Ploy, Dark Mage's Wisdom, Essence of Darkness, Poison Strike, Transmute, Lifetaker, Impossible Feat, Covenant, Absorb Strength, Absorb Magic, Absorb Dex, Absorb Speed, Absorb Luck, Absorb Defense, Absorb Resistance, and Absorb Charm. For Brawlers, Grapplers, and War Masters: Their class abilities of Tome Buster Lv 2, 3, & Lv 4, and Shatter are exclusive, and their learned skills Brawler's Ploy, Brawler's Wisdom, Brawling Prowess (All 3 levels), Concentration, Underdog, Apex Gauntlet, Rejuvenation, Boost Critical, Piercing Cry, Piercing Gaze, Quick Reposte, and Tomebreaker. The combat arts learned by Raphael and Balthus, Draining Blow, Mystic Blow, Lightning Fist, Steady Stance, Frozen Fist, Fierce Iron Fist, Mighty Blow, and Flamewhorl Kick can be taught to any character. As well as the 3 combat arts, Rushing Blow, Dual Devastators, and Battle Trance can be learned by all characters. The combat art Whirlwind Kick is exclusive to male characters however. Leonie's Rivalry skill also is back, but instead of giving her damage and damage reduction, it will boost her Warrior Gauge fill rate when a male ally is nearby or her adjutaunt. Sylvain's Philanderer Skill (Renamed to Adept Flirt) is the same, accept it fills his Awakening Gauge. Hilda's Advocate skill now fills her Adjutant, aptly named Adjutant Gauge and increases the Adjutant follow up damage she does when paired with a male ally as their Adjutant back up support. Seteth's Gaurdian skill however has been changed and no longer has anything to do with the gender of the characters, instead healing other units nearby when picking up healing items regardless of their gender. I believe that's everything in Three Hopes. I have...Way too much time in this game but I might've missed something.
In FE5, it's not that "male archers" have +1 mov, it's just ronan having a bonus of +1 mov at base, to make him a tad different. if you randomise the game, the male archers you get have 5 mov. And said randomiser also specifies that some units can roll with a +1 move, which is what some specific units have in the game. Edit : Kinda wrong, added context down below
No, he's correct. If he wasn't, Ronan would gain a point of movement on promotion, but he doesn't. Only Tanya does. Male archer and sniper classes both have 7 movement, while female archer has 6, and female sniper has 7.
@@hozus.7330 Had to double check, it's a tad more complicated. There are 2 "bow infantry classes" in Thracia 776. The "Bow Fighter" and the "Archer", one is available to the player at base, (Bow Fighter), in which case, the males DO have 6 mov, and the female have 5 MOV, but the actual "Archer", which is locked to the enemy without a randomiser, will have 5 MOV for both Female and Male. That's how i got a Leif archer that's coming with 5 MOV at base. So i'm kinda wrong, but it's because archer and bow fighter are different classes entirely. It's still weird that males have 6 moves, i'm pretty sure that they did that to showcase that ronan was faster in the end, since they didn't develop with "randomised" units in mind. (He's a hella meh unit at base, with more mov, and good vigor, thus making him better on some aspects)
RIP Subaki not even being mentionned as the first Male Pegasus Knight in the series unlike other units in the video ;-; Instead being brushed aside by saying males can now reclass in it.
And then there is Shigure who also does that. Kinda nice to see how diversity in gender expression got increased by a lot since awakening and fates. ^^
Siegbert’s personal skill, “Gallant,” boosts a female ally’s damage by +2 when she is the leading unit in a pair with him (when Siegbert is backpacking).
I remember that Awakening also had the gender-locked DLC classes of Bride and Dread Fighter! Didn’t know dread fighters dropped being male-only in fates tbh. It was really cool to watch all the differences throughout the franchise!!
No love for Nephenee? First (and only) playable Soldier which is otherwise an enemy-only male unit. I was about to include the promotions, then I remembered Devdan and he starts in Halberdier. Also, more soldier classes playable when? Nephenee was always one of my favorites for that
Well, Neph is neither first playable Soldier (that'd be Lukas), nor is she only (there's also Lukas and Forsyth from Gaiden/Echoes, and Aran from RD). Also games where Soldier or Soldier-like (unpromoted infantry lance) class is playable: Gaiden The Sacred Stones (thank you Ephraim) Path of Radiance Radiant Dawn Awakening (except it's Villager, so yeah) Fates (not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR playable unpromoted lance infantry, though Lancer is only usable by captured generics) Echoes Three Houses/Warriors: Three Hopes Engage (Timerra and others can be reclassed into Lance Fighter)
@Kruggov Gaiden was only released in the west as Echoes, so I didn't really think about those two. For some reason, I thought they were the red and green cavaliers of the game. Ephraim is a lord, so I didn't count him. He's not a generic unit. I'm surprised you didn't pull Amelia's Super Recruit Anything after PoR is after PoR, which is why I called Nephenee the first playable Soldier. It helped she was amazing.
16:22 Actually, you can forge the Golden Dagger Celica starts out with into a Ladyblade for 1 gold mark so if you either use DLC or defeat Grieth in Act 3 you can get the Ladyblade before Duma's Tower
You missed two gender bases personal skills in Fates. Forrest's Fierce Counter deals +2 damage on Enemy Phase against male enemies. Siegbert's Gallant gives +2 damage to a paired female ally if he's the support.
Really appreciated the work you put into this video!! Learned a ton about games I haven’t had the chance to play but now want to. Sorry you have been burned out! A let’s play sounds amazing!!
The Engage ones are also insane; *Chloe ships whatever het couple is within her line of sight as if it were a prince-and-princess courtship *Louis is trying to protect (imagined) lesbians so hard he takes less damage. *Rosado and Goldmary are exuding so much cute/femme fatale energy that they're weaponizing it.
Fates is such a weird game. Like, it finally got rid of a lot of the gender differences, like letting male units be sky nights, female units be axe fighters, etc. But the game is still so sexist against women. Camilla's appearance. The fact that almost all of the female Nohrian classes aren't in pants or even skirts. Only the male royal siblings get a personal weapon and none of the female siblings.
I like seeing the exclusive classes a lot and wish for more to see them branch off more often. Fates could have done more to give the royals their own special classes as sakura has mikotos outfit like Lissa to emmeryn and Leo Elise sakura could have been some cool units with their royal blood affecting their class. Xander easy conquerer Engage opposite since the lords had the skills and that just made things less fun to build arohnd. Do wish they added a second female villager in echoes to play off of Faye since she's the only girl of the group and nobody even acts like she is one. But she was very broken having extra stats and better growths than the other girls.
The problem with exclusive classes is that gender should not be the way they're locked. Its just ridiculous, weird and even sexist if we lock it by gender. Locking it by personality/culture on the other hand...
@@ramenbomberdeluxe4958 a guy can't be a priestess and a girl can't be a monk but it's basically the same thing. It's just a title nothing more so it's a non factor. Plus it's more accurate making the males physical growths higher while the females are more magic based. Plus Charlotte and rinkah exist so you already got your wish with a female fighter in Charlotte and some classes are both male and female based without any class distinction Only real problem is making females archers. Archery is seen as the weaker skill for those with less muscles compared to swords when that's completely wrong. Takumi should be way stronger for example as bows take more training to be able to shoot one off Region based is already a thing in a few ways. awakening Lissa can't be a dark mage. Tharja can't be a healer. Donnel is a diamond in the rough becoming a hero but his kids can get pegasus knight while vaike can have a daughter with the merc class. Meanwhile fates shares classes when you make a marriage or friendship so that system is sorta already there.
@@ivanbluecoolit is sexist in a boring way, like aside for the "pegasus only let maidens ride them" why are gauntlet classes besides enlightened one and war cleric male? Why are dark mages male when in three houses 3 girls learn dark magic instead of black spells? And while i understand the usually male classes having more physical stats and female classes having more magical stats children (not manakete, literally preadolescent kids or really young fighters) have more str, con and def than girls sometimes and that doesn't make sense (it does from a gameplay perspective as they are growth units but no kid that didn't start puberty is stronger than an adult female
@@JajajaAhhaha-t2f well even as a kid I was way bigger than most if not all my female family members and I'm not even the tallest in my family. Plus physical strength wise men are usually on par or stronger before adulthood too. It's just how bodies develop for survival or child bearing. Pegasus you see sumia quelling the pegasus showing her more calm heart can resonate with the creature while male fighters need to be more aggressive in a sense or cold to be battle ready. Plus we see the pegasus males as enemies sometimes and fates the breed is different being able to allow males to ride them with some challenges in tsubaki. Manakete makes sense too. The woman have to stay young as the birth rate is low and keeping a body with the ability to have a child as long as possible keeps their species alive. Male ones meanwhile grow faster to be ready for combat but we know the live long too with bantu still being alive in awakening 2000 years later meeting nowi. Their society is more tribe like and naga did warn the earth dragons Dark mages is a ritual so that's more of a religious thing in making a dark mage or a mage in general. They got similar outfits with rickon and mirel. Then we got sully who went to be a horse rider while her daughter was a knight which are usually male classes. Echoes boey was more defense based while his girlfriend is attack as that's how their personalities go with her being a more direct angy girl while he's more focused and worries. So fire emblem as a whole has moved to giving more classes to males and females in a sense giving some males magic and some females magic boosts so it's more about the individual than the male female thing seeing a male mage vs a female warrior and vice versa. I doubt we'd see a male bride or a female butler class as they'd just change them to appropriate names like groom and maid which honestly I would have liked to see more of to allow males and females to have more classes to play with. Not 3 houses bad in being everything but more branches like fates
Small addition when it comes to FE4, Male Mage Fighter had a higher sword rank than their female counterpart, while female Mage Fighter had access to staves (which their counterpart didn't even have). And their base (and therefore max) stats were different too. Also, IIRC Shaman was women exclusive.
Fates veteran here; one thing that I never hear people mention is that there are different attack animations for boys and girls. It’s very noticeable in victory animations and some crit animations for ranged weapons. One outlier to this rule (and how I noticed these animation differences in the first place) is Forrest. Forrest uses the more feminine animations to match his personality which is an amazing attention to detail that I’m surprised more people don’t know about it.
18:06 another fun fact, Felix also knows Darting Blow, but only as an enemy. This is most likely in reference to the fact that his ancestor, Fraldarius of the Ten Elites, was a Falcon Knight.
Fates and then continually in 3H games marked a revolution where the most prominent figures of axe wielders were female units. 3H made all sacred axes unique weapons for females
So i dont know if this counts at all but another difference in radiant dawn is all male sentinal (levail, devdan, and aran) class impale skills plays 5 hits both visually and audibly *the extra bit coming after the 3rd hit when pulling back the lance* while the only female *nephenee* plays it correctly with only 4 (though this is only as an audio and visual bug in the 3d battles)
Only error i noticed in this video is that in order to unlock the combined class pool in New Mystery, you don't just have to beat the game. You have to beat the game on hard and beat medeus. If you play on normal and/or get the bad ending the class pool is still restricted on the next playthrough Aside from that really small mistake, great video!
Something funny I found in FE8, in ch 17 there’s a few Valkyrie, a female only class, the enemy starts off with, but if you check their stats their aid uses the male’s 25 base for mounted instead of 20. It doesn’t affect anything since they’re generic enemies but it’s still there.
I think it’s worth mentioning that female paladins in FE4 had C rank staves in exchange for having a lower lance rank (C rank as opposed to the male’s B). This sort carried over to thracia, but with the weapon rank rework, they lost access to lances entirely.
I think they different aid system in gba games is a way to balance the fact that most female units have really low con compared to male units, so while a flying wyvern guy had 10 con a flying pegasus girl 5, she would have been able to carry more if not for the limitations. But this also applies to female cavalier/paladins and female wyverns that tend to have at least 2 con less than their male counterparts at base and more since some guys have additional con at base compared to their class constitution stat
If there’s one thing I didn’t get in Fates is why was the Grandmaster class Male only? I did a hack forever ago and tested it on several female units and some of the support skills worked really well with Elise and Camilla, and seeing Azura activate Ignis just looks aesthetically pleasing 😂😊👍
Grandmaster is locked to male because it's taken from the Robin amiibo. While Robin could be either gender in Awakening, the amiibo for Robin is only the default male version. This gives it parity with the other amiibo classes, who have defined genders.
Honestly, I don’t mind gender exclusive classes and abilities as long as it makes why they’re like that narratively. Like, how in the Dragon Age series, Dwarves are highly resistant to magic damage but because of that they can’t be mages. I remember how in FE lore, Pegasus get anxious around men which is why aside from later games, all pegasus riders are women. I also like how gender makes units of a certain class look different. It’s really cool how different female Druids are from male ones. But some don’t make sense why only one gender can be them. Like it’s weird how it took until Fates for a female fighter/berserker. Or Three Houses for the first male Dancer. I guess most men in FE don’t want to dance in front of the army.
Since randomized runs were mentioned, let me just recommend Ghasts randomized three houses playthroughs. I especially recommend seasons 1 & 3, because those got the funniest characters swaps overall.
An interesting thing with how Awakening's class inheritance works for gender-specific classes is that certain class trees are treated as "equivalent" to each other. If a father has Fighter as one of his reclass options, he will pass on Pegasus Knight to his daughter (with the exception of Vaike who will pass Mercenary to his daughter instead for some reason). And if the father has Barbarian as one of his reclass options, he'll pass on Troubadour to his daughter. The same is true in reverse, Miriel passes on Barbarian to Laurent instead of Troubadour, Olivia passes Fighter on to Inigo instead of Pegasus Knight, and Maribelle passes both on to Brady. This ends up being important since it means that you can get Noire, Nah, and Kjelle to be able to get Galeforce despite Tharja, Nowi, and Sully not having access to it by marrying each of them to male Robin, Gaius, or Donnel. Hence the Awkward Zombie comic about forcing Gaius to marry Tharja.
I really hate that gender locked classes are STILL a thing even after Fates removed that restriction (mostly). What is the problem that IS has with men being pegasus knights or women being warriors???
It is especially annoying in 3 Houses where there is a woman with a brawling proficiency and multiple men with flying proficiencies but Catherine can't be a grappler and the fellas can't ride a flying horse.
It's a weird sticking point in their Fire Emblem lore they've built up; pegasi are supposedly calmed/accepting of some mystical feminine energy and thus only will be comfortable around them. It's based off classical myths where unicorns had the same feminine-alignment and, depending on the tale, were either attracted to the "purity" of a feminine soul or would only be calmed by the overwhelming grace of a virgin woman.
@@SuperLuigiKart64 I get why this became a series tradition but it's an annoying and arbitrary handicap, one that doesn't play by its own 'rules'. For high-hanging fruit, compare Clair to Ashe and Ignatz. Nothing against Clair, she's a good person, kind and dignified most of the time, but you can't look at her many snobbish and short-sighted moments then tell me she's more mild-mannered or consistently compassionate than those two. you're pretty safe using sex / gender interchangeably because there are no canonically trans characters in FE, meaning that sex & gender are aligned for all characters. but kudos for acknowledging the distinction
@@JordiumZ No, as stated, he didn't want TH-cam's algorithm to see the word "sex" in the title, because that runs the risk of the stupid robot deciding that the video is NSFW and demonetizing it. You weirdos always blame everything on culture war nonsense, though.
Interesting video, but there are many corrections I can make. Firstly, the first game to make pegasus knights all explicitly female was FE4. In FE1, the sprite wears the same full armor as their unwinged cavalier counterpart. In FE2, the sprite's armor was changed but is still androgynous, despite there being no enemy pegasi and thus every pegasus knight in the game being truly female. It seems to me like there was the intention early on for pegasus knights to not necessarily be female. However by FE3 there is undeniable proof, with enemy pegasus knights being male with a different sprite to the playable female ones. This makes sense because, as was put, pegasus knights promoted into Wyvern Knights, and Michalis was a male Wyvern Knight. In fact, in FE11, there are unused male pegasus knight and female cavalier classes, which don't have sprites, but can be modded in as class change options which make the female class options perfectly mirror the first male class set. Of course the female cavalier did eventually make it in next game. Lachesis was the first female axe user, the only way Macha counts is as the first woman to ONLY gain axes on promotion. There are obviously playable fliers in FE4, I think you meant there were no playable MALE fliers. FE4 was notable for being the first time to have the same class, Paladin, be different depending on gender, with Female Paladins being able to use staves in addition to swords and lances. Most classes share the same data regardless of gender, merely coded to display different sprites depending on the character, with Paladin being the exception. Thus in randomizers you can have "male female paladins" able to use staves, although they are very bugged. FE5 in an attempt to make the female paladins not be strictly better than male ones, frustratingly removed their lance access, rather than give male paladins staff access. Apart from this, all of the Kaga games have all classes of the same name be statistically identical. FE6 was the first game to actually give distinctive slots for male and female class variants with different stat bases and caps.
Honestly the Female Paladins in FE5 really got the better end of the deal, mainly not losing access to a weapon type when dismounting and being able to do some funny staff boosts with the flame sword's +5 magic. When Amalda joins she can use the sleep staff at base. With only 3 magic level ups she can sleep any enemy with capped magic while holding a fire sword. She has the incredible niche of being able to use a status effect on Deadlord Canis if she has 19 magic base and someone uses Ensorcel on her. (Nanna can also do this but she has a pretty pitiful magic base and growth. You'll also need to train her sword rank.) I'd like to see Conomor try and do that.
You know, I always thought it was a bit sus that child units in Fates had personality's dictated by their father and hair colour dictated by their mother, but now I feel dumb and like I should have done my research now that I know that it was the opposite way round in Awakening. That makes a lotta sense.
Its interesting to note in three houses lythea despite being locked out of the main black magic lass dark bishop gets black magic skills in other classes. Unfortunately three hopes has all the same gender locks meaning lysthea cannot use black magic (her primary form od magic in three houses) in the game, yeah i kind of wish she had a trait or soemthing that let her pick up dark bishop in thee hopes or maybe a trait so her other mage movesets change into the dark bishop moveset
Ladyblade was one hell of a drug in Echoes only overshadowed by the Killer Bow but I still loved it doing absurd damage.😂 I’ll never understand why we couldn’t have female brawlers in 3Houses/hopes that would have been so cool.
So here’s a few fun factoids about Fates through probably the least talked about feature of the game: Bond Units and how gender-specific personal skills were distributed. Of all of the Personal Skills that come from playable characters. Only one gender-specific Personal Skill is available on a unit of the same gender as the unit the skill is sourced from: Nina’s Daydream. Meaning that Soleil’s Sisterhood is available to only male Bond Units. While Forrest’s Fierce Counter is only available to female Bond Units. Additionally, Percy’s skill Fortunate Son, while not affected by gender, is also only available from the pool of female Bond units (which is more so because in Japanese, his skill means “Lucky Soul”, and is not gendered like with the English version). However, two gender specific Personal Skills are not available at all in either Bond Unit pools: Siegbert’s Gallant, which is odd as he is the only child unit of a Royal that is not Kana, to not be available to any Bond Units. And the other is Charlotte’s Unmask, which was maybe a blessing in disguise, given that most of these skills trended to being available on Bond Units of the opposite gender. Though more likely, IS ran out of skills they could make be Bond Units personal skills be evenly distributed. As they distributed the skills to be in groups of 18 per route combination, or 9 per gender of Bond Unit. (Birthright/Birthright, Conquest/Revelation, Revelation/Revelation, etc…) There is also one more quirk of Bond Units I never got to experience, but felt is interesting enough to share, to see if maybe someone knows definitively: So Bond Units have their gender, appearance, classes and skills determined upon entering a My Castle that you will make a Bond Unit with. However there is a (likely extremely rare) chance that the appearance will be that of the Hooded Man (Sumeragi) from Chapter 5. As I have never personally experienced this phenomenon, I can’t verify if this is just something that is just a visual trait. As in, if the actual gender of the Hooded Bond Unit is exclusively only for male Bond Units.
I really don’t mind genderlocked classes especially in the games where reclassing isn’t as focused/encouraged. I think it feels a little homogeneous and I point to 3H for example because nothing stops the player from just having all wyverns, as funny as it is.
Two small things 1. As of fire emblem heroes, tigers are now retroactivly not male locked as kayza is refred to with they/them pronouns 2. In 3 houses there is an enemy female war master if youev recruited hilda on a map (or so ive been told)
If I'm not mistaken, it's Hilda's substitute for the green unit defending Claude in the Derdriu map in Azure Moon, so Blue Lions ch. 19. And you can see her class is War master if you zoom in on her. Strange that they changed their mind and made the class gender-locked in the final cut.
@@dljb7463 no But again, kyza isn't canonically NB or whatever, he's a dude and was always one since FE10, heck it's only the EN FEH that uses they/them, Spanish one doesn't for example

It works so weird, I remember that the game stutters if you change his body type through clothing
In addition, Forrest also used female animations / poses while in those classes or whilst at My Castle.
Granted, there is absolutely no reason to ever do that in a game dominated by swords, but still.
the video is ruined

It's so silly that the Dark Mage line is male-locked in Three Houses, and then the best actual user of Dark Magic (which very few characters even get at all) is Lysithea.
also, out of the four units who naturally learn dark magic, only one of them is male. the majority of dark magic users are female, yet the class that specializes in dark magic is male exclusive
@@Underworlder52, Jeritza learns Death
And it's also dumb that War Master is locked to males only, especially since the replacement for Hilda as an enemy unit is a War Master, but she can't be one herself.
The dark cavalier class is also a very desirable class for Lorenz because of his adapt talent in both lances, horseback riding, and black magic but he can’t become a Valkyrie, or a male equivalent to a Valkyrie.
Correction: Hapi, but point still stands
@@banbanthebandit4002 three houses even has a generic female war master, further showing how arbitrary the restriction is
@@banbanthebandit4002because it's explicitly canon that Pegasi don't allow men to ride them unless they are passengers.
(The Japanese only DLC class for Minerva is the proper Awakening style Pegasus Knight)
Everything else though is entirely arbitrary like you said.

"When user is the support unit, if the lead unit is female, the lead unit’s damage +2."
Speaking of Fates... technically speaking Felicia and Jakob join time being based on the Avatar's gender is also a gender difference... even though both will join you eventually... that counts, right?
Male Pegasus Knights actually exist in fe3, but only as enemies. They have a different sprite than the female ones and wear a helmet. This is notably a bit weird since there are no named characters at all that use it.
oh cool i didn't know that at all!
Hubert IMO doesn't need Dark Knight that much, if only because the last maps of CF are very unfriendly towards cavalry.
@@Dakress23 I'd rather not deploy Hubert at all than have him in another class
This discussion made me realize that Idunn was the first female dragon/Manakete to become a final boss. Until finally Rhea comes in and continues this long forgotten "archetype"
She is also the first female final boss as a whole.
You are not counting Female Robin Grima tho
Did you forget about female grima ?
@@troykv96 How many female final bosses are there in general? Idunn, Ashera, fGrima, Edelgard, and Rhea?
@@cyndit9054 Yes, they're indeed the female bosses that exist in Fire Emblem.
Gallant requires a female as the lead Pair Up unit, and Fierce Counter requires a male enemy to initiate combat
Can't say I blame the oversight since Fates' kids' petsonal skills are often overlooked, but I figured it should be pointed out since you remembered Sisterhood and Daydream.

I think the gender differences in Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes are also a pretty big thing to note as there are some pretty stark differences, though it is a spinoff and not mainline, and also the wikis SUCK for this, so I don't expect anyone to talk about it lol
In terms of classes, the Pegasus Knight, Falcon Knight, and Gremory are locked to female units. While the Brawler, Grappler, War Master, Dark Mage, and Dark Bishop are all locked to male units. The unique classes of Saint (though it is just a female variant of Mortal Savant with unique skills), Armored Lord, and Emperor are exclusive to female characters. And the unique classes of Death Knight (A version of Dark Knight with enhanced abilities), High Lord, Great Lord, Wyvern Master and Barbarossa are exclusive to male characters
Due to how the weapon ranks work in Three Hopes, you unlock a class as you unlock the next level of weapon rank depending on what weapon that class uses.
This also means that the skills learned in these classes are gender exclusives:
For Pegasus and Falcon Knight: Their class abilities of Alert Stance and Alert Stance+, and the learned skills of Pegasus Knight's Ploy, Pegasus Knight's Wisdom, Darting Blow, Harmonious Specials, Sol, Speed Catalyst, Tableturner, Muster and Item Expertise.
RIP Subaki not even being mentionned as the first Male Pegasus Knight in the series unlike other units in the video ;-;
Instead being brushed aside by saying males can now reclass in it.
Siegbert the simp lol

No love for Nephenee? First (and only) playable Soldier which is otherwise an enemy-only male unit. I was about to include the promotions, then I remembered Devdan and he starts in Halberdier.
Also, more soldier classes playable when? Nephenee was always one of my favorites for that
Well, Neph is neither first playable Soldier (that'd be Lukas), nor is she only (there's also Lukas and Forsyth from Gaiden/Echoes, and Aran from RD).
Also games where Soldier or Soldier-like (unpromoted infantry lance) class is playable:
Gaiden
The Sacred Stones (thank you Ephraim)
Path of Radiance
Radiant Dawn
Awakening (except it's Villager, so yeah)
Fates (not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR playable unpromoted lance infantry, though Lancer is only usable by captured generics)
Echoes
Three Houses/Warriors: Three Hopes
Engage (Timerra and others can be reclassed into Lance Fighter)
@Kruggov Gaiden was only released in the west as Echoes, so I didn't really think about those two. For some reason, I thought they were the red and green cavaliers of the game.
Ephraim is a lord, so I didn't count him. He's not a generic unit. I'm surprised you didn't pull Amelia's Super Recruit

Glad to see you're back ghast, i hope you're doing well. Dont burn yourself out!
I like seeing the exclusive classes a lot and wish for more to see them branch off more often. Fates could have done more to give the royals their own special classes as sakura has mikotos outfit like Lissa to emmeryn and Leo Elise sakura could have been some cool units with their royal blood affecting their class. Xander easy conquerer
Engage opposite since the lords had the skills and that just made things less fun to build arohnd.
Plus Charlotte and rinkah exist so you already got your wish with a female fighter in Charlotte and some classes are both male and female based without any class distinction
Only real problem is making females archers. Archery is seen as the weaker skill for those with less muscles compared to swords when that's completely wrong. Takumi should be way stronger for example as bows take more training to be able to shoot one off
Region based is already a thing in a few ways. awakening Lissa can't be a dark mage.
Their society is more tribe like and naga did warn the earth dragons
Dark mages is a ritual so that's more of a religious thing in making a dark mage or a mage in general.
Happy to see you back :)❤
17:41 literally the goat, Sylvian is iconic
the difference between the two terms is that i did not have gender with Lady Rhea
In Fates, Leon’s son Forrest uses female action models due to his feminine appeals despite being male himself.
Loved the editing, especially with the sprite screens. Loved the motion and energy.
Only error i noticed in this video is that in order to unlock the combined class pool in New Mystery, you don't just have to beat the game. You have to beat the game on hard and beat medeus. If you play on normal and/or get the bad ending the class pool is still restricted on the next playthrough
Aside from that really small mistake, great video!
Something funny I found in FE8, in ch 17 there’s a few Valkyrie, a female only class, the enemy starts off with, but if you check their stats their aid uses the male’s 25 base for mounted instead of 20. It doesn’t affect anything since they’re generic enemies but it’s still there.
This is the kinda content I wanna see! I love it
I think it’s worth mentioning that female paladins in FE4 had C rank staves in exchange for having a lower lance rank (C rank as opposed to the male’s B). This sort carried over to thracia, but with the weapon rank rework, they lost access to lances entirely.
welcome back
I think they different aid system in gba games is a way to balance the fact that most female units have really low con compared to male units, so while a flying wyvern guy had 10 con a flying pegasus girl 5, she would have been able to carry more if not for the limitations.
Not the title I was expecting lmao
Would definitely love to see a let's play btw!
Another great video!
I would DEFINITELY watch a playthrough :)

It's a weird sticking point in their Fire Emblem lore they've built up; pegasi are supposedly calmed/accepting of some mystical feminine energy and thus only will be comfortable around them. If these oh-so-sensitive animals are happy to work with a sadistic cult fanatic who enjoys little more than bringing death and despair on behalf of her genocidal diety...then just about EVERYONE should meet their bizarre criteria.
MY WIFE AYRA AS THE FIRST SWORDMASTER IS LEGENDARY!!!!!! AYRA IS SO AWESOME!!!!!!! : D i am glad u mentioned her faerghast!!!
you're pretty safe using sex / gender interchangeably because there are no canonically trans characters in FE, meaning that sex & gender are aligned for all characters. but kudos for acknowledging the distinction
he just didn't want to be "cancelled" lol
Please return to your mental institution, your fellow delusional people miss you!
The only people who would care about this are people spending too much time on Twitter
@@JordiumZ No, as stated, he didn't want TH-cam's algorithm to see the word "sex" in the title, because that runs the risk of the stupid robot deciding that the video is NSFW and demonetizing it. You weirdos always blame everything on culture war nonsense, though.
For pretending there's a distinction you mean
You'll also need to train her sword rank.)
I'd like to see Conomor try and do that.
@@66Rokersnanna has C sword rank so it's not hard
Also growth scrolls are a thing
Thanks for the video
Great video
Einherjar is pronounced ein-heir-yar but that's just a nitpick. Great video.
I am excited to watch this video!! Keep up the good work faerghast!
I love ALL Faerghast videos!!!! ❤
Hell yeah, he's back!
Ladyblade was one hell of a drug in Echoes only overshadowed by the Killer Bow but I still loved it doing absurd damage.😂
I’ll never understand why we couldn’t have female brawlers in 3Houses/hopes that would have been so cool.
However, two gender specific Personal Skills are not available at all in either Bond Unit pools:
Siegbert’s Gallant, which is odd as he is the only child unit of a Royal that is not Kana, to not be available to any Bond Units. (Birthright/Birthright, Conquest/Revelation, Revelation/Revelation, etc…)
There is also one more quirk of Bond Units I never got to experience, but felt is interesting enough to share, to see if maybe someone knows definitively:
So Bond Units have their gender, appearance, classes and skills determined upon entering a My Castle that you will make a Bond Unit with.
Idk how good it is for the algo but I will be here for the let's play!!
Say what you will about Fates, but not counting the DLC it gets credit for being the only game that lets anyone be any class regardless of gender
5:10 Erynis is the only playable pegasus knight in FE4 first gen, second gen has 3 playable flying units (one being a replacement unit)
Flayn’s skills is the opposite of Hilda’s where it reduces male taken damage by 3
I read the thumbnail as "Sex references in Fire Emblem"
I really don’t mind genderlocked classes especially in the games where reclassing isn’t as focused/encouraged. I think it feels a little homogeneous and I point to 3H for example because nothing stops the player from just having all wyverns, as funny as it is.
If you're including dlc awakening has bride and dread fighter as gender locked classes
Im surprised Rosado cant demote into a peg flier, but that would mean deleting Camille so its totally understandable.
Two small things
1. As of fire emblem heroes, tigers are now retroactivly not male locked as kayza is refred to with they/them pronouns
Kyza is a okama in JP RD, and he's only refered to with them/they in the EN FEH
@@mysmallnoman what's an okama
@@mysmallnoman also are they ever explicitly gendered in japanese? I know japenese kind of uses pronouns rarely
@@dljb7463 no
But again, kyza isn't canonically NB or whatever, he's a dude and was always one since FE10, heck it's only the EN FEH that uses they/them, Spanish one doesn't for example
I think forrest also does the same thing as rosado where he uses the female model/animations!
YES PLEASE RANDOMIZED ENGAGE LET’S PLAY
omg i would DIE for a new randomized run!!! th e3h randomized was how i found you in the first place and I still go back and watch those vids sometimes they were a blast!
Still want to see a video on the history of Dancers (Or units that serve the same purpose in the case of Herons)
In Three Houses, Leonie can be recruited immediately by male Byleth, much like Sylvain with female Byleth.
>Using the world "gender" to refer to men and women can get you demonitized
jesus christ, what a fucking stupid world we live in...
great video in any case, I feel your pain
yup its depressing state of the world
shigure was introduced as a pegasus class in fates, and he was the only one
Spotted a huge difference you missed
Male: No breasts (sans Geb)
Female: Breasts
To point something else out: Chrom and Lucina's great lord are the only classes in awakening to have gender differences in caps.
You left out Bride and Dreadnight dlc classes from awakening being gender locked
speaking of "Sword of Convallaria" is actually a good game for smartphones, but too easy, i got to level 10 quite easily, but actually story is very good
Wasn't fates the first time they introduced subaki the first male Pegasus knight
Very good preserving lost media.
Cries in Gwen from fe6 ;(
Interesting video. I've never liked gender locking as a concept personally, i just find it limits your options.
Merrin and Sylvain having very similar skills but one is bc she’s a gay knight the other is bc he’s a chauvinist playboy lol
Pegasus knight is in fates just only in the Japanese version and the only pegasus knight is Minerva who is female so it's kind of gender locked
I guess Treehouse found the word Pegasus too "offensive" for Americans, like half the names of the cast
