    Thanks for this, Mark. I've had nothing but confusion and frustration while trying to join open vectors, and your explanation of how to do it is an enormous help. I went to a file that I currently have in progress (which I knew had some open vectors) and used this to identify and join them. Hearing your simplification of the process made it a lot more logical. Thanks!

      Thank you, Jim! Sometimes it takes taking a step back to look at a situation from a different angle to make a difference.
      I was taught a long time ago that the way to troubleshoot a problem was to eliminate the impossible, break down the possible, then focus on the probable. It's learning what the probable is that takes the time - especially when you don't know where to start.
      So in this case, previewing the toolpath, then ungrouping everything, then looking for open vectors is the way to identify them and fix them.

    I'm so frustrated- the issue I'm having is exactly as the one in this video- but I'm not able to join the vectors. I get the same error message in tool paths but with 237 open vectors with only 2 words totaling 15 letters (vcarve desktop)- i go back and select all the fonts- I select "ungroup" , then while all the fonts are still selected (all letters are pink), I select join vectors and the little box open up- BUT all the letters I selected are now black and the box says "open vectors = " closed "vectors = " there's no number there, and the "join" button is not active. If I drop down the menu and select "show all open vectors" the response is "no open vectors in design!" ugh! toolpath says there's open vectors, design command says there's no open vectors! UGH!!! I'm following your steps but getting different results. I need to take an angry walk and get some fresh air- really hating vcarve right now! :( UPDATE: i found the problem! not mentioned in the video- the issue was with my text field - I had "single line" selected instead of "true type"... I selected "rue type" and tool path was happy. :)

      I talked about the difference in Single Line fonts and True Type fonts during one of my live streams, but it looks like I need to make a separate video on the subject. You aren't the first person who has had this problem. Glad you got it sorted out!

      yes, thank you. 🙂 just curious, when would someone choose "single line"? 15 letters gave me 237 open vectors. 😬

      Usually they're used for engraving with a diamond tipped drag bit. Generally very small text on metals, glass, or acrylics.

    Hi, I have a vector based question. Is there any way to change multiple vectors size at once. To be clearer I'll give an example. I am cutting slots for shelves, but plywood sheet thickness may vary within 1 millimeter boundaries, so if I want a snug fit, I need to adjust my slot size (hight) depending on material I get. Maybe there is a way to adjust size of all slots (same vectors) at once in my worksheet, not clicking and adjusting them one by one?
    P.S. thank You for your videos, I guess am not the only one who learned a lot from You.

    • @MarkLindsayCNC
      @MarkLindsayCNC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have Version 11 of the software, this can be done quite easily in the Set Selected Object Size form by selecting all of the slots, checking Scale Items Individually, then entering the size you wish the slots to be in the X and Y blanks in the form. If you don't have Version 11 (and I highly recommend upgrading to it) there is a way to do it. I did a video on it a while back - here's a link: th-cam.com/video/J8EybZHVy8E/w-d-xo.html

    A clear and concise explanation once again. I have 1 question about the tolerance when joining the open vectors. Wouldn't it be wiser to select say .003 or .004 as the tolerance? That would equate to joining a wider gap in the currently un-joined vectors, would it not?

    • @MarkLindsayCNC
      @MarkLindsayCNC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the number again, Steve - that's .0004 - It does make a difference. You can certainly adjust the tolerance if you need to, but be careful. It can lead to joining vectors you don't want to join, joining them in the wrong place, or joining them in a way you don't want them joined. I have a video in the works that will explain that a bit better. I just didn't want this one to go over a half hour.

    While learning this joining is painful

  • @MSM5500
    @MSM5500 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Unfortunately the method you describe doesn't work 100% so there are cases when "Join vectors" leaves some vectors open anyway. There definitely is a bug in the software. If the developers aren't capable to come up with a more sophisticated algorithm they'd rather give a chance to a user to do that manually. But the didn't. What a shame!

    • @MarkLindsayCNC
      @MarkLindsayCNC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never had a problem with it. Adjust the tolerance, and you can join any vectors. There is no bug - the software just doesn't try to anticipate what you want to join or what you don't want to join. Personally, I prefer to have control over what I'm doing, and not have software or apps try to do my thinking for me.
