    • @TonjaHammel
      @TonjaHammel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @MarcusAurelius After reading your comment I quickly reviewed more of his clips from various time frames. I'm not a Bill Maher expert but he seems to be walking a fine line between political commentator and comedian with frequent missteps. He's said equally nasty things about both sides and satirizes all parties & persons although the advent of Trump has obviously changed his focus quite a bit. However, it's his opinion, he's not in public office & he's not fomenting violence. As Marcus Aurelius said, "Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth." I will concede that the name calling, comparisons and general rudeness have escalated in our country but I don't think you can place that on one person. In MY opinion, as unpleasant as it is, the current climate has exposed the abscess that lay below the surface of "civilized" American Society & Politics of previous decades. You have to express the putrefaction to allow a wound to heal. Hopefully we will move beyond this divisive moment to an America that is not what it was but has become something greater. Thanks for engaging me on this issue.

There are things that should never be acceptable, and when you see it, you have to call it out. No matter how frustrating it is or how much you want to keep peace in your house, having a relative who thinks throwing kids in cages and the like is ok and just let it slide is not good. @@Icureditwithmybrain You mean the impeachment of the President over a crime that he literally admitted to on national television? The impeachment of a President for trying to intimidate and tamper with a witnesses while they are literally on the stand giving testimony that he tried to intimidate her into not testifying?
      It's only a "Partisan" impeachment, because every Republican has already made up their mind about what the outcome will be before the investigation even started. They whine about investigations being conducted privately, as a "secret witch hunt" and then when the hearings become public, Republicans whine that it is just a "TV spectacle". Republicans whine that all the witnesses testimony is just hearsay, and then they block material first-hand witnesses from testifying. Republicans whine that the Democrats have already made up their mind about the outcome, while they say that no matter what evidence they see, they will never stop supporting the President.
      So, yeah, when one side engages in a deliberative, thoughtful, and Constitutional process, and the other side stonewalls and has temper tantrums, and tries every possible way they can to disrupt that process, it does become partisan. But that's not our doing, it's yours.
      The fact is, the only reason this impeachment is ABLE to go forward is because Donald Trump is so stupid that he can't stop admitting to crimes in the national media. He literally committed an impeachable offense yesterday morning, when he tweeted at Ambassador Yovanovich in an attempt to intimidate her while she was giving her testimony. Even if the Democrats had NOTHING until that moment, he just handed them an offense that they can legally impeach him for. And then there's the fact that both he, Rudy Giuliani, and Mick Mulvaney have ALL admitted publicly on TV that they did, in fact, attempt to exchange US Military Aid (aka Taxpayer Money) to the Ukraine for political favors to aid Trump's 2020 campaign.

      One can disagree without getting personal. One can think the other is an idiot, without pointing it out.
      The idear of "winning the argument" has lost its meaning (especially on the internet)... One "wins" if the other changes his or her viewpoint... Otherwise you just express your position, and the other doesn't accept it.
      And it is highly unlikely that you disagree on every level with someone else... Fundamentals like friendship, family, interests in a specific subject, it will always be there, focus on that if you want... Or risk end up hating.

    • @donrobertson4940
      @donrobertson4940 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You can disagree, but focus on the issues not the personalities. I get why people are frustrated - a lot of the things they complain about i agree with. Rising productivity and stagnant wages, government that favours the well off more than the poorer people. Infrastructure spending Etc.
      It frustrates me, and it pisses me off when concerns just get dismissed by some hipster liberal who then says democrats and republocans are all the same. You know the type - the ones who said Hillary was as bad as trump and didn't vote.
      I spent thirty years in progressive politics and now i get told I'm not welcome because I'm just an old white guy - ok boomer - by people who divide everyone up into ever smaller groups and go on about inclusion and listening - and seem to think the opposite of talking is waiting.
      I'm disillusioned and pissed off by liberals. I feel dismissed and ignored. And am a liberal. I agree with them. Imagine how liberals make conservatves feel.
      If liberals spent as much time listening to conservatives as they do attacking each other, maybe we'd get somewhere.

    There's a reason this country was made heavily federal: because it's huge, both in acrage and in population. Which means that anything enacted federally is bound to feel tyrannical to tens of millions of people who disagree with it. That's why most policy prerogatives were designed to be devolved to states and cities. Want publicly-mandated universal healthcare? Do it in California. Want permissive gun laws? Have them in Nevada. Want a high minimum wage? Do it in Seattle. Or wherever you live. Low taxes? Move to Florida. And so on and so forth.
    Local and state politics don't provoke nearly as much ire as federal politics do for the simple reason that they don't feel as tyrannical, even though it's often the exact same policies pushed by state Democrats and Republicans as their federal counterparts. If push comes to shove and you radically disagree with the policies forced on you, you still have the option of moving to another city or state that's closer to your political liking. Much harder to do when the law is forced on half the North American continent, which makes people feel trapped, and thus very angry. "The Almighty Federal Government will tell you which doctor to have, which plan to have, and you'll take it and shut up."
    So one way to calm things down is to just keep in mind that not everything has to be done nationally. It should be enough for you to make your state the little liberal or conservative nirvana you want to live within.

      Objectivity in political matters lies in the acceptance of the strengths of all personality types. Far-left thought and far-right thought empirically don’t work for whole societies, but fervent centrists are no better because the fringe is sometimes correct on specific issues. I have come across libertarians who have prescient views on subjects like factory farming and the ”educational” system, for example. The issue with the American right, however, is that they elevate the businessman as superior to all other types of person, which is erroneous. The American left (center-right, really, opposing a far-right party) simply wants a system that gives everyone a little bit of what they need, and this is why the idea that both sides in the United States are equally at fault was always annoying. It is especially inane now that the conservatives are denying climate change in a time when the leading climate scientist Michael E. Mann is pointing out that we have even less time than the IPCC said we had in the 2018 report. Sadly, I fear that because the Union was founded by the English middle class, a group with extra-individualistic entrepreneurial spirits whose idea of far-left is anything left of Ayn Rand, there may simply have to be horrendous conflicts every once in a while, when the political discourse gets to an issue which is particularly serious. Objective people saw in the Antebellum era that the South was the problem and that the North was just reining in their massive egos rather than being some enemy of liberty. Likewise, those who have done their homework see that the right is the problem for not caring about the liberty of future generations to a livable environment. This is not some tragic play or Great Russian Novel where there is pathos from all sides being equally understandable. The European systems are built on recognition of the strengths of all types, whereas the philosophy of the American right immorally has, at its basis, the elevation of entrepreneurs as superior to all other types of people, which is intolerance. The left has a number of issues but nothing on the same plane as the climate change denial of the right. In addition, the right is now complicit with someone who wants Muslims banned from entering the U.S., tweeted that congresswomen of color should go back to their own countries rather than criticize the U.S., tweeted cartoons of himself beating up personifications of the press, and joked about Mika Brzezinski bleeding badly from a face lift. The chances of another civil war by 2030 look pretty damn good to me.

      On the other hand, I do understand his actions have not followed his words. He maintains a solid base of 41% as a result of playing straight down the conservative playbook. Of that ideology, I agree with about a third.
      But his stupid world view, calling the emoluments clause phony, referring to abortion as "killing live babies," etc. He would have been better off keeping his mouth shut.
      So, no, I would never support Trump. I have debated Trump supporters and found I could never "own" them either. It's a state of mind.

    It's important to note that while we experience these political, religious, and ideological differences, we disregard these immediately when a neighbor needs help, when disaster strikes, when suffering is evident.

      Accept the right are the ones who want to cause disasters. Fascism is on the rise, even in Europe. This isn't about treating each other well. There is a massive problem developing in society. And it's only going to get worse and if we "let it go".

    Bill Maher is the best talk show host in the U.S.A., miles away from whomever is runner-up! No political correctness but most of the time, he hits the nail on the head. I'm not American, I'm Portuguese but I'm not dumb enough to think whatever is happening in the U.S. doesn't have a direct impact on what is happening in Europe and the World at large...so..I follow your politics with great interest. Nice end to this season show and with a great message.

      Go back and listen to the bit just before he said he wanted a recession now. He was saying that a recession is going to happen in any case. He only wanted it before the election instead of after. Since this appears to be a bubble and the more a bubble inflates the worse the pop will be, his request would actually be a good thing. To many, Trump's actions cause more long term harm than a dip in the market. Thus for them, the trade off is one that is best for the nation. I figure we will almost certainly see a dip soon. I am moving my investments towards more safety. When the dip happens, I will bargain hunt.

      @@minyaw1234 A real analogy would be: Do you want to potentially lose your job now or watch your family die in a nuclear holocaust and slowly drip away from the radiation. Meyer thinks a civil war is possible. It's not. It's gonna be World War 3 after Trump has destroyed our government. Either way capitalism is coming to an end due to technology. Give Andrew Yang a listen to. The War on Normal People specifically.
