It's been a great video Kylie. I'm from North Somerset in the UK. I've been working alongside you. I felt your frustration losing your quick unpick. Boy it made me laugh with you. So many of us fall into that trap of purchasing everything, but not doing anything with it. A general rule that I (try) to stick to is-can I find more than one way to use it? If the answer is yes then I’m more inclined to buy it

I was a consultantant for an Aussie scrapbooking company here and have now acquired so much of over time that I have to justify , do I need this 😂😂😂 or do I want it.. so you are so correct , you can start out with minimum supplies when junk journaling. I do this craft for the fun of it . And yes the hunt is grand. I love the op shops. We also have a community centre that gives away books.with the option of donating a gold coin or more if you can. This has been great watching. We learn something new each day. Happy paper crafting. 💜🙏💜🙏💜🙏

I try so much to use all the supplies that I still have from when I had the shop, but it’s nice to have something new to look at. So I try as much as I can to incorporate my old supplies when using the new.

Part 8 came up in my TH-cam list.... and I had started watching it. Then my light bulb brightened (LOL..... I have my days....hahahahaha) ..... I thought that I should really go back to number one and follow the parts through!!! So here I am .... watched Part 1!!! So now to Part 2!!! I have always had it in my mind to do an altered book.... but there has always been other projects that took my interest first!!! So I am going to watch your series and then I will pull together the bits and pieces I want to make one. Thank you Kylie.... you are certainly giving me heaps of inspiration of recent weeks!!! First the little journals out of paper pads..... then the journals from 12x12 papers..... and now...... ALTERED BOOKS!!! Yaaaaayyyyyy!!!! And it will certainly help me use up my stash!!! Love....love...love!!!

Excellent video, I'm surrounded by craft supplies but I just can't seem to do anything. I keep thinking that if I buy this or download that, it will be the answer. I started to take a book apart, got half way through and again and came to a standstill. I decided that youtube was the answer and that's how I found your video. I plan on watching every one of your video's as so much of what you said here resonates with me. I know your video's will give me the inspiration I need to get going again. Hi Barbara, it’s good to know that you haven’t just given up. It can get very overwhelming sometimes with all the stuff that is out there and we all occasionally fall into the trap of buying more thinking that it will inspire us. Sometimes it’s great to shop your own supplies and watching TH-cam is always a great way to get inspiration. But do always remember look at what you already have that you can substitute instead of rushing out to purchase what a creator is using. Look for something similar to start with and then before you know it you will be coming up with your own ideas and working your way through your stash

@@kyliescardcraft7939 it definitely would seem easier. I had to hault this project, I messed up the book. I thought I was to remove every other signature instead of removing pages from each 😂 I was wondering why mine was still full of pages with significant gaps 🤣 I removed 2nd signature in its entirety n left 1st n 3rd n repeated throughout the book.
I can’t wrap my head around if I cut each signature to remove the enter pages with the cut strings how would the Outter pages still stay sewn in… so that’s why I thought it was removing every other signature.

@@Swt.Designs The outer pages stay in as they are glued to the backing, I know, it can be difficult to get your head around to start with. But always remember your first one should never be a masterpiece 😁 it’s always a practice one, I think that’s where so many get disheartened, it does take some practice and you will make mistakes but also you will never learn how to fix things if you don’t just jump in and go with it. For me I find that the best time to learn something is when I’m trying to fix a problem and then my brain can finally get it 😆 good luck with yours if you take it back up ❤️

Hey Kylie...Love watching your videos and want to follow along with this series. I've ordered a set of three vintage Reader's Digest condensed books from a seller on Etsy with purple covers (my favorite color) and I hope they have the signatures in them. This is the third time I've watched this episode and realize you mentioned the 50's and 60's book editions. Mine aren't that old so I hope they do have signatures. Anyway, I am trying hard to see how many pages you leave in each signature. It looks like you are only leaving the outer sheet of two pages in each. Is that correct? or are you leaving two sets? I figure about 10% are left when you are done but I just want to check before I start removing pages. Thanks for showing us how to do this step by step. It really makes all the difference for those of us who are new to this. I started to alter a book years ago and it was going well but I hated glueing the pages together. Now, I think I will revisit that book and start removing the pages as you are doing. But for now I want to do the bigger Reader's Digest one. I appreciate and enjoy watching your vids and can't wait for my books to get here.

Thanks for the quick response! Ok, all but the outer pages of each signature, got it. If they turn out to be glued and not sewn I'll be sewing new signatures in too. Oh please do show the purple one you are working on. I really like your approach to journaling. Lots of tidbits and found scraps, using the digital stuff more as collage pieces, cards more so than the whole page printed. I think they look more authentically "junked" when they are made that way. Thanks again for your help abnd your lessons. Can't wait to start!

Hi, sorry I didn’t get back to you straight away. Some books have better pages than others no matter how old they are I’ve found, but yes if you’re at all concerned about your pages I would definitely adhere two together ( if nothing else it gives you peace of mind) it won’t detract from the look of your book at all, the only thing that you’ll need to be mindful of is air bubbles, so make sure you really press down when gluing. Hope this helps

@@kyliescardcraft7939 No worries, I get to experimenting when I need to! My old book''s pages are actually holding up much better than I thought they would. I'm planning to do a cutout page and in that one case I will be gluing two together for stability. Thanks for your tip.

Hi Rhonda, so happy to have you on board. I’ve been thinking about your question regarding the holes in your journal, I don’t use eyelets that much but they do come with different lengths in the shanks ( not certain how easy they are to find) maybe some that are made for leather work? Otherwise the only other thing I can think of is hand sewing in a loop stitch where you’ve punched the hole, so that you make like a buttonhole, which will give it stability and it won’t want to tear. Hope that helps

So my problem is finding sewn in books. Mine are all glued. Advice?

    • @kyliescardcraft7939
      @kyliescardcraft7939  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi, you can still create an altered book with glued in signatures, but you will need to tear pages out instead. The easiest method is to leave a page, then tear out 6-7 pages then glue the next page to the first ( this will cover the torn edges) continue doing this until you get to the end of your book. If you want leave a couple or more original pages in place between the new glued sections. It’s always wise to do a dry run through your book before tearing anything so that you know what you’re working with and depending on the thickness of your original book you may only need to tear out 3-4 pages. Hope this helps

Hi Erika, yes you certainly can alter a book with glued in pages. With that type of book you will need to tear or cut the pages out. Way back when I did a video showing how to do a mini altered book using just that method here’s the link th-cam.com/video/S3O3C52EQLo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=E4hOk_5Exq_ep2Nc
This will give you an overview of how to go about it, it’s up to you how many pages you want to take out. Hope that helps, let me know if you need some more help

This is interesting. Other tutorials say "not to cut the threads!", the threads provide stability. The book is likely to fall apart, it will lose its stability, once you take a away the needed stability from thread/binding-zone. - is what other tutorials say.

Hi Paula, the last pages when taking out a signature are glued together, so this is the reason that I cut the threads, occasionally the paper is very old and will want to tear so I will reinforce those with either washi tape or more paper. But I’ve not had a problem with the stability, doesn’t mean that I never will 😁 but so far I’ve not encountered the problem

the disembodied hand flapping when you aren't showing actual steps is unpleasant. Moving on to another video with less hand flapping and more time spent on actual steps.
