I watched a great take on this subject of coach firing. It was from Quita Loves Sports and featured her dad who brought up some interesring observations. He said when Michael Jordan joined the Bulls, the very next season the coach was fired and Phil Jackson took the team to the championships. When Labron James came to the nbcothe Cavs fired their coach after the first season. The same happened with Steph Curry. Apparently this is not an uncommon thing when an iconic player comes into the league. Christy joins an elite group.
Robin the move is not ballsy when you actually consider that they made it to the playoffs not because of coach Sides but it was despite. This was a necessary move for a team to be able to aspire at winning a championship in the near future and not 5 years from now.
Yeah that’s easy for us to say but if you look at the data it shows that since Sides became coach she took them from a 5 win team to a 20 win team. Fans tend to factor in the players which makes sense but usually the team’s record is the main focus. A coach can only work with the players available, good or bad. This is an unusual situation though. If Caitlin wasn’t in the WNBA yet, I’d imagine Sides would still be the coach but also almost none of us would care about the Fever either.

Not calling a timeout before being put in a losing position or having lost a major portion of a big lead, the inability to challenge ref calls, the inability to articulate an effective defence, the inability to understand the type of gameplay that favours CC’s game, the inability to get the right starting lineup by the 25-30th game of the season and even then she had issues keeping Nalyssa Smith out of the starting lineup, the inability to assess talent that resulted in Celeste Taylor being waived and not knowing what bench players like Saxton and Berger can give you.
Give Coach White the benefit of experience, taking the Sun to the playoffs in the last two years, being Coach of the Year, et al. She is a proven winner, give her a break! which the Fever is willing to do, to coach for the championship NOW!
Your insightful comments dated two weeks ago have proven prophetic BUT at the end of the day, the Fever under-achieved with Coach Sides, she took the team as far as she could so kudos to her. I agree wholeheartedly that Coach White will be a better coach, for sure! Two things that Coach Sides did on her watch: she got rid of Celeste Taylor without giving her a fair opportunity to play, and the Mercury has benefited royally AND the second is that she made no real additions before the trading deadline, just getting Dantis and refusing to play Grace Berger to relieve CC and give her some needed minutes of rest.
I would prefer the Fever paid very well to get in some new blood from college like Indiana's Teri Moren, Creighton's Jim Flanery or Gonzaga's Lisa Fortier. Or Rena Wakama, the Nigerian coach in the Olympics. She was great & was awarded FIBA's most outstanding head coach of the event over Cheryl Reeves. Wakama just joined Tulane as an asst. coach, but if someone was smart they would try to get her into the WNBA system as at least an associate head coach (aka HC in training). But I can also see there are big risks to bringing anyone new in & it would at the least take them some time to adjust to the WNBA system (Hammon adjusted quickly, but Tibbetts is still trying to figure things out). So of the existing WNBA HCs, I would say White is the 2nd or 3rd best coach. Reeves is probably the best coach currently in the WNBA & I remember an analyst saying you really see the difference in the skills of the coaches in the WNBA playoffs. So for White to get the Sun all the way to game 5 against the Lynx, shows White has coaching skills. And White has always talked highly of CC, even in the early part of the season when everyone was being so salty. And CC supposedly likes her too. Not only was White part of her college scoring record congratulations video, but the first time the Fever played the Sun, during the change in practice when players from each team greet each other, White was the person CC went straight to & started talking to. And even when the Sun players called Fever fans racist during that press conference, when asked about it White said those are just trolls & called the press out for feeding those trolls & giving them attention instead of focusing on the positive stories about players & teams.
Remember who came to Coach White's introducttory presser: CC, AB, Lexie Hull and KM is balling in China, who probably would have attended if she was in Indy.

Christie Sides never bought in to Caitlin Clark. Whenever the media asked her a question about CC, she would answer it taking about Mitchell, Boston or someone else. Sides played for Ole Miss and La Tech where she made it to a Final Four. Sides also went to three final fours at LSU on Pokie Chapman staff. Seems like a lot of former players from this era do not like CC. The players 10 years before this era likes CC. Teresa Weatherspoon was a head coach on La Tech staff 10 years after Sides left.
I think Curt Miller is going to land somewhere in the WNBA after being fired from the Sparks. That one was puzzling to me. Brink blew out her knee, so that explains the bad season for the Sparks.
It was Dan Dakich who works for Outkick called CC a coach killer. Clay Travis is the only opinion over there that matters. Dan Dakich and Lin Dunn are great personal friends. He is salty about Dunn getting replaced. Dan Dakich saw numerous CC games. He actually has been there when CC and Sides had issues on the sideline right in front of Dan Dakich no more than 20 feet away. I expected him to show up the next day and talk about it. He was coached by Bob Knight so he probably thought that was normal. Sides yanking on CC arm constantly reminded me of Knight and coaches during my generation.
Lynn Dunn is being kept on as an "advisor" out of respect for her years of service and winning a WNBA championship as Fever head coach in 2012. This is totally appropriate. The coaching change was inevitable, as White brings instant credibility to free agent recruiting this off-season. Plus, she's an excellent coach. WNBA coach of the year in 2023.
I have a feeling they going to bring Assistant coach Jenny Boucek from the pacers. she is a front of the bench side to side coach to head coach. she brings that NBA experience to fever. 2 yrs the pacers went up in standings
I don't think the Fever would've kept Sides if CC vouched for her. They obviously respect CC's input and opinions, but their priority now is to be a championship contender and they know they're limited with Sides. I'd imagine they'd also want to attract top level free agents, some who might've gotten far in the playoffs, and if Sides is still there it would be a huge downgrade for them. They'd be like, "why would I leave a team who can go far into the playoffs for a team who barely got into the playoffs despite of (not because of) their coach?".
