- ** As of now, assume Rainbow is male and will be referring to the bird as “him and he”instead of “it”.
** Since Rainbow is still so young, I am giving it some time before the final determination of its gender based on the cere and behavior. Some days the cere seem a little purplish. Hormones aren't steady in young budgies so I will do a video to announce it's real gender later on.
** UPDATE - Rainbow is 1 year 8 months now (5.11.19 ) and is definitely a MALE.

I really want a bird... But don't want to have to go to Petco or something to get one and don't know about any breeders in the area. Where did you get your birds. BTW I love your sweet voice and how you talk to your birds. :)
Thank you for your sweet comment. Not all birds are unfriendly or bad from the local chain stores. Rainbow is my 9th budgie. Looking back, none of my birds were from any breeders, not hand tamed or hand raised. I am in the making of a video on how I decided to get Rainbiw and how to select a healthy and friendly bird.
How long have you been wanting one? Did you do research? The internet is a wonderful place for info to equip yourself with and get ready starting from your home environment. I have “ how to “ videos in my playlist that may be helpful.
Since you are asking now, what I did was check all the local stores weekly and see what type of turnover they get. I examine their current stock of birds to see if they are well cared for. I check what type of food, check the water, how clean the environment of the birds are. I observe how the bird interact with one another.
Then I move onto the employees. I talk to each one over the many months ( probably even a year or two ) that I have been visiting. I even get to know their source of bird supply and when delivery is down to the hour.
Rainbow was exactly the colors I was looking for and a young male ( hopefully he is ) and just arrived at Petco 30 minutes prior to my arrival. He hasn’t had a chance to learn the “ bad habits” of the higher pecking order / high status (birds that haven’t been sold and been in the store for awhile and becomes “ boss” in the cage.). I saw how friendly he was to the point where he didn’t react when another bird was standing on his tail!
I took the time to physical examine Rainbow and also his access his mental status as well. You can do they same thing and get a great bird too.
Let me know if you need anymore help in selecting a healthy or friendly bird. I hoe this helps.

Lisa Trader hate to say this but there is a good amount of things your doing wrong one of them is a huge mistake the cage budgies need a wider cage than tall and a flat roof then need to have space to fly those fancy roofs are a waste of money and space if you have one budgie you only want 1 or 2 toys platic toys is bad for them you should always have two budgies together they would live the company you should change the food and water daily clean the cage once a week make sure WHEN THEY EXIT THAT CAGE WINDOWS ARE CLOSED DOORS CLOSED AND FOOD AND SHARP OBJECTS ARE PUT AWAY

Josh and Brook! I think if the bird spends most of his time in the cage then you are absolutely correct. But, I think it’s fine for a small cage because her birds only sleep in it. If you watch her videos they play in the entire living room. It’s the biggest cage they can get! Haha

it's a girl. a male budgie has blue above the beak while this one has pink.

Pink can also apply to males, if they have a recessive gene. :P
Some male recessives retain a pink cere, even after maturing.

Thanks. Rainbow indeed love his environment. I see him playing/exploratory my freely to almost all the toys, even the ones that Mango & Blueberry have never been interested in! For the longest time, I thought those untouched toys were a waste but not anymore. Sometime down the line, I will swap out or take out the toys that were not played with and in storage for Tainbow to play with.
Yes, I have more toys! It’s toys galore, Birdie version of Walt Disney World for my flock! LOL

Rainbow is turning 3 years old in September. Every morning I still give him cheek rubs, neck massages and sometimes back and wing petting too before he leaves his cage to play with Mango. He is very gentle and very tame indeed.
@@teardropface the male budgie I bought was very tame as a baby, but then as he matured he stopped liking being touched. Now he only allows the female budgie to touch him hahaha, he followed nature

My baby conure had had his primaries clipped just after he fledged - he could still fly but it took him a lot of effort to stay level. Now that he has grown new primaries he's quite amazing .

Rainbow came clipped but he is flapping his wings often while holding onto perches to simulate flying when he sees Mango and Blueberry flying in tandem , leaving him all stranded. Poor baby...

Lol under the pinned comment there is so much hate! Teardropface takes such amazing care of her budgies. Do you people not understand that when in the process of taming and training a budgie, it is best to have a small cage? Also, they need little to no distractions. That means keep it in a cage without a friend (as other budgies can be the biggest distraction out there) and too many toys will keep their attention away from you! She is literally giving her budgies the best life ever. It is rare to find a budgie owner like her! She even included some of this info at the end of the video, so make sure you know what you’re talking about before you go off telling others they are wrong. It hurts me to see how many of you think you know it all and are trying to tell this amazing woman that what she’s doing is wrong; clearly she isn’t. :) keep up the great work Teardropface. Jenna Stevenson - Thanks for letting me know about this. I didn’t even see this thread. So appreciative of your support. If you see anymore, please let me know. You are such a great person to speak up and support when clearly something is very wrong. Many people either add to the fuel or just turn the other way but not you. This kind of reminds me of that tv show “ What Would You Do?” Have you seen it? Growing up I was raised to avoid conflicts, problems, listen closely and be silent and to speak when spoken to. There were so many hurtful things that just needed to be swallowed and I vow never to treat others the way they treated me and try to forget and forgive. Some are innocent because they judge too fast and criticize too quickly before getting the big picture. Sadly there are some who purposely put down others so they can feel better about themselves.

Thank you. We try. Rainbow however at times is so hyper and bossy that I have to put him into the cage for time out until he calms down. This way my two older ones can eat and play in peace. LOL

When you were taking him did he ever bite you?
Never bites. Birds bite because they feel threatened. Owners that know how to handle birds so that the bird can develop a bond/trust. When the bird trusts the owner, there is no reason to bite or fight with you. Just like humans, one would not bite, fight or reject loving parents/families and friends. Mature human adults avoid toxic people, relationships, or bad situations when we are taught right from wrong and know what love is and know to trust the right type of people. Same with animals. They are very intelligent and learn fast.

Rainbow is 2 1/4 years old now and every day I give him face/cheek/neck massages and pet him. His colors has changed a lot since his first moult. Today his face is a golden yellow. You must of gained his trust very well, I was shocked as you stroked his back. Birds are scared it you touch them from the head or the back, Just amazing.
Rainbow is around 6 months old now and love head rubs and still lets me stroke his back, body and wings daily.

My sisters budgie lives with my cockatiels and yes, they do act differently... Though they are sometimes like a mommy and daddy to her... Her name is beauty but she looks just like rainbow and is just like him... She snuggled in my Mommy's hand when she picked her up right after we clipped her wings to calm her down:)
How old is Beauty and how long have your sister had this budgie? I know budgies that are caged and live with cocketeils and do fine. Just keep an eye to make sure they are still friendly with one another because behavior changes during hormonal times or for no reasons.
I have had .rainbow for 13 months now and roughly calculated he was around 5 to 6 weeks old when I got him. Today 14.5 months old, he still get back rubs, head massages and cheek rubs every morning.
@@teardropface My sister had this budgie for 3 days and we gendered him wrong he's a boy and we don't know for sure how old he is but he looks about the same age as Rainbow... My boy tiel/cockatiel helps him to eat cracking the sunflower seed shell and they get along pretty well! The girl Riel tho... She keeps on trying to peck or bite Sky ( who was known as beauty but we changed he's name to sky) And can you please make a video on how to tame an aggressive budgie? Sky sadly got aggressive seeing the untamed cockatiels... He still let's us touch him but he trys to bite us when we put him back... 8m guessing you call it force tamed...? Thank you for your advice and concern though... BTW IMA BIG FAN
Biting is due to Sky being bullied by the female tiel. Since the female tiel keeps trying to bite Sky, it’s natural instincts to protect himself, hence he is starting to bite. To stop the aggression and bad habit, remove the female tiel to live in another cage herself. Let them out to play together but don’t let the female tiel be in the same locked cage as the other two to prevent the other two from picking up the biting habit and being mean themselves.

This poor thing doesn't need taming. He is probably been abused so much in the pet store he is afraid of his own shadow. Love and attention will bring him back to reality. And good feathered friends.
You couldn’t be more wrong.
LOL, If you saw my other video about why I decided to get Rainbow, you would have heard me say the UPS truck just delivered 3 new baby birds to the pet shop just 30 minutes before my arrival. I stayed about an hour studying the birds before getting Rainbow. The other birds never got a chance to really get near Rainbow. Rainbow wasn’t there long enough to get to know any of the birds or get bullied. That was my point in deciding to get him immediately before he learns all the “undesired habits “ in order to survive the survival of the fittest environment at the pet shop.
Rainbow isn’t afraid of his own shadow either. As a matter of fact, even though he is the youngest of the flock here and also the smallest in size too, he is bossing Mango & Blueberry around like he owns the place today! Even with clipped wings, he is so confident of himself that he just barges in and pushes his way to all the food, water, toys and perching areas without any thought to it. I am in the process of teaching him manners. I just might have to keep his wings clipped as long as he thinks he is king to keep him under control and not be take advantage of Mango & Blueberry’s well behaved manners and good nature.

How long have you had your bird?
They do frighten easily but if you have your bird cage next to a wall, the bird wil not It be as jumpy. Also, avoid sudden loud noises, slamming doors, screaming kids/adults will also help calm your bird’s nerves. I like to put on soft music from the radio. Do try to talk and spend lots of time with your bird so your budgie recognizes your voice. Offer food in your hand so your bird can associate your hand as being friendly. Hope this helps.

For about a month or 2. Since our last two lovebirds we owned died about a few months ago(Tommy, a lovebird who was tamed very quickly by us and a male lovebird who always loved to perch on us! The baby was born from it's mother, and she learned a lot from her, grew up with grey and blue feathers very fast, and loved to perch with us! And then her mother killed our neighbour's bird, and we sold her off to our local Flea Market. Tommy and the baby have lived with us for very long! Their hearts will always stay in our greatest memories ever!), we bought a female one, which was apparently scared as well(Been a few months and she's not trained yet.), then we took a budgie with us to live with her when our last female lovebird was lonely, and she doesn't get along well with the budgie to be honest.
This is one of my longest comments I've been writing ever.
*And P.S. I tried hand taming with patience and timing, but still no good luck, only getting rejected. XD*
From what you tell me, you are experienced with birds and the taming process. Some birds are just very hard to tame due to its personality, age, and or early experience with or without humans.

My budgie Birty never comes near me
I bought him 2 years ago. His very sweet and he sings all the time.
He has got the biggest cage I could buy
He has so many toys and swings bells and mirrors
He loves to bath and he plays with my guinea pigs all day
Then he goes to his cage at night to sleep
But if I try to put my finger Near to him he fly's away from me always
The only time I have ever held him was one time when he flew down the back of a shelf unit
That time he did not mind me helping him back to his cage and I kissed him right on his head
I guess some birds just don't like to be close
I don't like to scare him so I never force him
I talk to him but he has never said a single word back
I love him no matter what I guess I am just rubbish at taming him it's probably my fault

I can tell you guys hit the jackpot with getting a parakeet that has a very sweet disposition ! Keep doing one on one training sessions. With him and get him to like head scratches. I can see potential in him to be smart like your others, but maybe more affectionate with you.
Rainbow is very different when he is with my other two. Given a choice, bird’s always prefers the companionship of their own kind.

We also had our first snow storm for the season over the weekend 6” for us but the sun melted most of it the next day and got away with no shoveling! Yeah..... Don’t like to be in the cold and wind anymore.
Dad makes sure somebody (human form) plays with Rainbow daily. :)

Yes, Blueberry talks but randomly may and in the evenings when the lights are dimmed making it hard to record and catch him talking. I do have a one or two videos in the past with Blueberry talking.
teardropface I'm so in love with all 3 budgies. What does Blueberry say? Mango just makes me laugh so much....and I'm really impressed with Rainbow that he's allowing to be stroked and cuddled so easily. I hope Blueberry and Mango accept him into the family....So much kisses to the three of them!
Mango & Blueberry seem afraid of Rainbow. Rainbow is bossy and will push his way to the food ( no manners- LOL). Luckily, my other two just steps away or flies away and let the baby eat first. However, I capture a few times when Blueberry opened his beak and stood his ground. Rainbow instantly understood that he crossed the line. I am letting Mango & Blueberry do their part in helping tame Rainbow like acting socially, House boundaries and rules. I am depending on my older birds as Rainbow’s mentor!
Wow, he looks super young...still has the black on his beak...how long had you had him in this video? He doesn't even flinch when you reach in the cage and touch him! He seems unusually confident in that regard. May I ask how you acquired him? E.G., from a breeder? From a franchise pet store? Do you keep their wings fully clipped, or just clipped enough to hinder their speed/mileage? (I suspect it's the later, based on blueberry's video where his wings are obviously clipped but where he does fly from one cage to another area.) At any rate, this is one beautiful babe!
We got Rainbow last year on November 9. He was just delivered by UPS 30 minutes prior to my arrival to our local Petco (chain pet shop). They have no records of how old their birds are but I assume Rainbow was around 5 to 6 weeks old based on that he was just delivered to the pet shop and that dark mark on his beak. It’s been a year and 12 days since we had him and his cere is finally purple and not blue yet. Very late bloomer for a male budgie. His coloring has completely changed from this video after his first moult. Today he has a golden face with the upper half of his body spring green
(yellow green) and the lower half sky blue, hence his name. He is very playful and can come to us on command but very bossy with the other two. Rainbow still enjoys his daily cheek, neck and head rubs and I can pet him down his back every morning. They all came clipped from the store but all my birds are fully flighted and tamed today. I am a big fan, but you should have a cage that is rectangular and wide enough for Rainbow to fly in. I hope this helps!
Ideally it is if your bird is confined to the cage. However, mine gets lots of outside time most of the day. Nothing is bigger than the outside of any huge cage. Rainbow only goes into that cage to sleep thru the night.

Two was from a bird specialty store. The one we were taking was from a chain pet store. Never used a breeder. How are your birds coming along?
Aww, nice, I never had one from a breeder before. Well last night I put them both on the cage to greet, my male let me know this one is a female. He was going to mate her. She bucked him off her back. I never had a male and female. So I'm not sure if I should return her to pet store and just keep him. I'm finding it difficult to hand tame her around him. He gets mad if I go to the back room with her and not him to hand tame her.
There will be jealousy like kids but they get over it especially you will spend time with him right after. There is enough love to go around!
So you sure the other one is female? Even though your male was mounting on the second bird’s back, sometimes they will do that even if it’s male as well. Rainbow was going after Blueberry’s tail area and also Mango’s. They both let Rainbow know that they don’t do that. LOL
I can take a look at your second bird to let you know what gender if you want. All I need to see is a close up and clear video of the face area.

Clipping is needed in the beginning for training and taming purposes. Some birds need to always have their wings clipped if they aren’t good flyers or there is another safety issue. It all depends on the situation.
Breeders and bird store owners need to clip the birds for safety reasons.
Is it easier to tame budgies if they have clipped wings or would that just make their anxiety worse??
I can tell you are or will be a great pet owner from your sensitivity on how others will feel. If one can feel such compassion for animals, I can imagine how sweet a person you are to humans. Your parents did a great job to have a by product like you, great personality there!!
It depends on their age and history. It is true that if the budgie always had its wings and have had experienced flying, especially freely, clipping can definitely cause anxiety and worse. However, you can makeup for it by adjusting its environment so it doesn’t need to fly to its toys or cage and still be independent without fearing for its own safety. Example, I built a ladder so the bird can climb up and get back into the cage and feel independent when their wings were clipped and still in training. Their toys are easily accessible. I empower, stimulate and encourage my birds to be confident and not to fear their surrounding by making it bird safe.
For a baby like my Rainbow, only a few weeks old that was clipped already from the breeder, had never experienced flying will not have any effects. Today, my Rainbow’s flight feathers are all grown back in and all tamed and trained, also is a great flyer.
Sometimes birds aren’t great flyers to begin with and need to have their wings clipped to slow them down to avoid crashing into things. One can give a “soft clipping” in this case. The bird can still fly a little but without the height and speed. A soft clipping allows your bird to safely glide downwards for a smooth landing instead of a hard clipping that results in a dead drop like some rocks.
I don’t know if you know, but I have other budgies. I had to clip Mango’s wings two or three times before I was satisfied with the tameness level. Again, Mango was young and was clipped from the breeder already when I got him.
So there are different types of clippings. Consult your bird professionals. Not all will know about this type of soft clipping.
Bottom line, clipping makes it much easier for taming and the owner will have much more control over the bird. As a bird owner, you can always make the decision to stop clipping after the training process or continue to no matter what the reason is
( poor flying on the bird’s part, family environment where the bird will get spooked easily, people at home opening doors and windows without thinking about the bird’s safety, etc)

Since your bird learns quickly, take that opportunity to continue to teach it new things. Wing clipping depends on your bird. Some birds are just not good flyers and will crash into everything and can be fatal. Other birds need to continue to be clipped due to them not obeying house rules and may get into trouble. Another reason to continue clipping is because the bird’s tameness isn’t at the level where you want it to be. Still some owners choose clipped wings because of their family lifestyles (doors and windows opening frequently and stays open). With clipped wings, the bird cannot get the height and usually cannot fly too far either.
I had to clip my Mango two more times before I was satisfied with what I want him to do in terms of tameness.

My birds are always scared of me and avoids me at all costs can you give me some tips on taming my two 🐦 birds
How long have you had them?
I would get another cage and separate the scared budgie to tame. Then try slowly moving your hand and place it on side of the cage and leave it there for a minute. Slowly move your hand to another side of the cage and do the same. At first, your scared budgie will run away at the sight of your hand but still keep it there for a minute and rotate on all sides, even at the top of cage. Do this several times a day and talk softly his/her name or whatever phrases you want the bird to learn and to recognize your voice. Hand placement daily until your bird no longer runs away from your hand when your hand is placed on the cage.
The next step is to open the cage door and again slowly place your hand inside the cage just at the door way. Same procedure and then move closer and leave your hand there for a minute. Continue to move closer . If you see your bird backing away or panicking, move one step back and let the bird get used to your hand’s position. I think you get the idea.
Taming takes time & patience. Every bird has its learning curve. Once your lesson is up with your bird, you can place him back into the other cage with the bird if you wish and get the next bird and do those lessons again.

I recently got my first budgie that looks a lot like rainbow... but more of a blue grey on the body. I named him Ciel (French for sky) cause I think he looks like the sky (his body the blue sky and clouds and his face the sun). My bf wanted to make him storm cause of his grayish color but hey it's my bird and I though of a sky not a storm lol, especially with the yellow face. Ciel joined my bfs 4 other budgies and immediately took to them. He steps up and is so cute (only a few months old). I also have a dilute Greencheek conure named willow that lives with my bfs turquoise conure (with rare yellow shoulders and red belly!) Named evergreen. Both are females.
Sounds like you and your boyfriend together have a good variety of a flock there.
Your Ciel is a yellow faced pied variety. Pied because of the variegated colors on the belly. Ciel isn’t like my Rainbow at all but more like my Mango. Have you seen Mango? My Rainbow is now 7 months old. Taming is the same whether you got a few weeks old to a few years old. I have “ how to” videos in my playlist. It takes more patience and time for older birds.
Female bites are more forceful than males. There are different types of bites, soft and hard. Soft bitting is playing with you while hard bitting is to prove a point of a dislike. Bitting once in awhile is a communication that something isn’t to their liking while constant biting that is hard and sometimes drawing blood is a behavior issue .
How to tame a scared budgie. How I can take him out of cage. There are multiple budgie in his cage.

Rainbow is a girl. If their beak is bluish to purple looking they are boys. If it’s nude to pinkish, like Rainbows beak, it is a girl

I am planning of buying two budgies, a male and a female, I want to tame them, so that they sit on my fingers and be comfortable with me. Its ok if it doesn't learn to speak (the male)....Will it be difficult to hand tame both of them?

Sooo cute! I love the addition of rainbow to your birdie family :) Did his wings come clipped? or did you have to get the clipped before you brought him home? My budgie is 2 years old, however she is not really that tame and still very timid. Do you think we should be trying to put our fingers / hands in her cage to try to touch her gradually? Or perhaps she just hates us.

How long have you had your budgie? If she is finger tamed and has a close bond with you, then you can try. If you had her since she was young, then I would say she wouldn’t like being touched if you haven’t exposed her to petting by now.
She likes to watch us from her cage or from her toys, or if we're at the table she likes to come down to her play stand and watch / eat with us. She will get reasonably close to me, but wont necessarily land on me, but will eat out of my hands. She is generally afraid of all vegetables and fruits... and only eats a specific seed type. I'm not really sure how to get her to eat her vegetables... I'm not really sure how to finger tame her.
You definitely got her attention and she will be easy to finger tame. She is just waiting for your lead to tame her to close in the bonding process.
Rest your hand at the cage door and wait a minute. If your budgie doesn’t move and seem comfortable, move a little closer and wait another minute. If she moves away in fear, leave your hand there another minute or two and talk to her. You can say her name over and over and again if you wish. Continue to get closer and closer to her as she allows. You might have to work with her over several days before she is comfortable at all with your hand in the cage.
When she is comfortable with your hand resting on the same perch as where she is standing, with your pointer finger horizontal and straight, slowly place it right underneath her belly ( above her feet) and gently push inward. She has no place to go but to lift up her feet and step onto your finger. If she start bitting you, do not pull away. If she sees you pulling away, then she will take advantage of the “cause and effect”.

Make sure you have a bird proof room and a play area for them. If tight on space, the top of the cage is good real estate to utilize as a landing area or a go to area when out of the cage.
