I'm nearly 62 years old, and got my motorcycle license at the age of 18. So I've been riding for close to 44 years. I've taken numerous long distance motorcycle trips in those years. My last one almost 8000 miles, in 20 days.
Along the way, over the years, I've also run across many other older two wheeled travelers, like myself. Crossing the U.S., or at least several states, on a trip with no destination. "Reveling in the bliss of the journey", as we've jokingly quipped. It is always a joy to share the happiness of our experiences, when you run into people at gas stops, campgrounds, and road side restaurants. It feels like running into old friends. People that are also, older two wheeled veterans of the road, out there, "drinking-in their universe". Often times no schedule to keep. No one expecting you to show up at point "B", at a certain time.
In my travels, I'll typically cover 350-500 miles per day. On my last trip I logged one 952 mile day, one 740 mile day, and the rest between 350-500 miles. Among we veterans of the road, that I've conversed with, it seems universally true that we have one thing in common, the appreciation of having a machine, that doesn't unnecessarily fatigue you. The subject often gets around to the noise level of our bikes. Most agree that they've found over the years, that quieter is better.
I ride a 2013 Yamaha FJR1300a. She's my Japanese mistress. My best friend.
I watch a lot of TH-cam videos. Mostly related to motorcycle travel, nomadic/ camping living and such, as well as motorcycle reviews.
Occasionally I notice with younger people giving reviews of ADV motorcycles, and speaking of mods that they recommend, is the tendency to recommend a louder exhaust system. I usually chalk that up to people who seldom do multi-day motorcycle trips, and over a hundred miles a day. It's okay because often times it takes a person quite a while before they figure out the magic combinations of factors and comforts that make their traveling an adventure in bliss. That is to say, "I've had loud pipes"........ now I know better. ON TO BLISS.............
Mine is having my Android Smart phone, with a mini SD card, for music storage. Also my set of Bose Noise canceling ear buds, and an inline amplifier. My earbuds switched on, with my Shoei Air GT helmet in combination with the stock quiet exhaust system, blocks out at least 75% of all the ambient noise. Typically I'll be listening to navigation information with music, or an Audible book of my choice, or a podcast. Sometimes TH-cam videos. The experience of riding and enjoying the smells of the nature around me, the blissful scenery zipping by, while listening to something other than the fatiguing drone of exhaust system noise, is as close to heaven as I'm going to get, in my time on earth.
In 2016, "my 8000 miler", I stopped over night in Bozeman, Montana, on my way to Kalispell. The next morning I woke to rain storms, and showers, that would end up lasting for nearly four hours of my ride. It was about 65 degrees(mid August), in Bozeman, and I wasn't about to stand around for several hours under the hotel car awning, with "car" travelers, waiting on a change of weather to come. I donned my rain suit and temporarily my ball cap, and rode my cycle into the carport to load it. Needless to say, the looks I got spoke volumes......... "A 56 year old man on a motorcycle, getting ready to ride off into a rain shower". They didn't have to say what they were thinking. Myself, enjoying the smell of the ionized summer rain shower.
So.... off I went, listening to an audible book about John Adams, and a British girl in my Waze App. I'd like to think that when I rode into sunny Kalispell, Montana, at 4:30 in the afternoon, and a 78 degree temperature, that the "car people" were still standing under the car port, in Bozeman, waiting on "the love of my life", mother nature, to change her mind. Do you know how great it is to ride through Montana, with Swan Lake on one side of you, and Flathead National Forest on the other side, while listening to john Denver sing Sweet Surrender ? It beats the hell out of exhaust noise.

I don't know if you read all your comments, but I hope this one makes it to you..
Last year marked my 60th time around the sun, and I decided to do a summer motorcycle trip for the first time.
I attribute my inspiration and my encouragement to a handful of people.
My dad you introduced me to motorcycling and a few youtubers who made it seem possible.
You were one of those people.
Thank you for your content and helping me to check off a bucket list item late, but completed!
    Thank You for your inspiration!
    Keep going..
There are others that need adventure in their lives..

I'm so happy to see you going back naked truth! It is true that's not easy, just the bare necessity, but as I always said: Less is More. After my years on the roads, like you, I always wanted to keep: Harley warpony on my side, my tent (home), and whatever fits on the bike..supermarkets are my storage and pantry, and I feel so free! Welcome back to the drifter's life's style! and see you very very soon ready for Mexico together

Rich and Chris, i know for a fact you guys did not make a bad choice of selling the house and telling the kids what your plans are and not necessarily in that order. We all have one life to live and knowing you guys this was well thoughted out and to do what you have decided on is a masterful decision. Kudos to your ventures. Everyone that plans trips to other countries should sit down and rethink for our country has so much history in it many Americans do not and will not ever know or learn and reading about things is not the same as visiting it . Peace.

Getting closer but stil have so much stuff to find new homes for. A good friend is coming out to take care of my place and the neighbors around end of June. Once she gets here and let's me know what she want left inside then I plan to put just what I need in my toy hauler. Have a guy coming this weekend to hook up my solar and new batteries on my toy hauler. This way I can stay out for two or more weeks. My truck and RV will be base camp. If I need anything I will use my small cargo trailer that I will bring for shopping and holding my tent and camping gear. If I need water I will have a 65gal tank in back of truck. So by Aug or first of September I will be on the road. With fuel I will boondock most of the time to save money for the next move to next state. Hope to see you both on the road. Be going East by South when I leave Northern AZ. Be safe ride safe enjoy life.

SACRIFICED FOR FAMILY, BUT I'M THE TIME OF PERSON THAT LOVES RIDING ALONE AND BEING IN PEACE, QUITE NESS, AS A SINGLE MAN, NO DRAMA JUST LIVING LIFE, ENJOYING LIFE, RESPECTING LIFE, AND TAKING EVERYTHING IN STRAIGHT FORWARD! ALSO LIVE FULL TIME IN A 40' TOY HAULER WHICH I COULD HAVE TAKEN! BUT BECAUSE OF FAMILY I WENT ALONG WITH THERE PLANS! GOOD SUPPOSEDLY VACATION BUT TO BE HONEST NOT REALLY

My 1st bike 1965 750cc Norton Atlas, oil leaked into chain-clutch compartment result a super smooth clutch that slipped if you applied too much power parts not avalible
2nd bike 400cc 4cyl Honda F very nice but electric starter failed (after warranty) but it had a kick start that worked just fine.
3rd was 1500 HD Superglide Anniversary edition stage 3 carburetor & ignition vance & hines shorts exhaust & transmission altered to 6 speed. It was LOUD tended to startle automatic theft devices when I passed.
4 th Kawasaki Concourse 1400cc , very nice silent, fast, reliable & parts avalible.
Yes still riding cycle @ 70 years old.

You have dreams, set some goals, make a decision and plan your next moves. To travel, ride motorcycles and make Moto Vlog videos to capture moment by moments all for a better quality of life for yourselves and others is something worth getting excited about and getting up in the morning about. Life shouldn’t stop because gas prices go up. You control how the game gets played. If you are healthy of mind and body you just do it. This is why you made sacrifices, paid your dues and worked your whole life to do. Just do it. Live your best life. Ride safe and rode often. Just my .2.

Great recap Chris and Rich. Enjoyed reminiscing. I have watched all of them. Have you stored the truck and trailer? Getting back to the basics for a bit. Not sure if we will make it to the BMW Rally. Bob’s GS is out of commission . Hope to have it fixed this week. Are you still planning on going since you no longer have BMW’s? How did your seminar go in GA? Sorry so many questions. Stay safe and enjoy.

I understand why you went from two wheels, to the truck and RV. However, it wasn't why I subscribed to your channel. I just heard that you're on two bikes again, and look forward to following you again. I've done numerous long distance trips, but never camped.. I'm too old for that and won't hold it against you if you stop in hotels.

If you want to see the two men that put the BMW 1200GS on the adventure touring map, watch Ewan Mcgregor and Charlie Boorman's Long Way Around. They were experienced bikers but they played hell getting those big bikes through Russia. They broke all kinds of parts and themselves. It's a great series and through shear determination made it all the way around. Even the camera crew that took different roads managed to roll a truck. Nothing is perfect in adventure. But training is a must along with determination. Another channel is Itchy Boots. She is a lone rider, no camera crew, or anybody besides herself. She is bold determination. But she dropped her bike many, many times before she learned how to ride it.

OK. i just subbed. i have seen a couple of your video's. did not know you went from motorcycle to pop up, to trailer. does this video mean just motorcycle from now on? or do you still have the trailer? one more question, how many flat tires on those rocky dirt roads? i am in the planning stages of doing a cross country motorcycle trip. i hope to leave Florida next May(2023) this video will help me plan for whatever. thank you. be safe.
