Chuck E. Cheese's is an American chain of entertainment centers and restaurants. The channel is the primary brand of CEC Entertainment, Inc., headquartered in Irving, Texas. The property serves pizza and other dishes and offers arcade games and rides as well as animatronic robots. The brand takes its name from its main animatronic character, Chuck E. Cheese, an anthropomorphic mouse that sings and interacts with customers.
The first Chuck E. Cheeses's Pizza Time Theater opened in San Jose, California on May 17, 1977. The concept was created by Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, known for designing the video game Pong. The Pizza Time Theater was the first family restaurant to incorporate food, cartoons and arcade.
Following a bankruptcy filing, the chain was acquired by competitor Showbiz Pizza Place in 1984, creating Showbiz Pizza Time, Inc. In 1990, the company began unifying the two brands with the goal of renaming each location "Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza. The logo was revised in 1994, after the word Pizza was removed from all signs. Showbiz Pizza Time, Inc. became CEC Entertainment, Inc. in 1998, and more than 500 Chuck E. Cheese's restaurants operate in 2019.
