'We'd hire him': Florida jogger detained for fitting burglar description, deputies apologize

- (Video: Volusia County Sheriff's Office)
"Wrong place -- wrong time," said Joseph Griffin, a Black man who was detained by Florida deputies as they looked for someone wanted in a burglary.
It happened last week when Griffin, while out on a run, was stopped by Volusia County Sheriff's Office deputies. The tense encounter between the jogger and deputies "deserves recognition" for how everyone handed it, said the sheriff, who even offered Griffin a job.
"You're not in any in trouble or anything, there's, uh, a burglary that happened -- you kind of fit the description," the responding deputy told Griffin.
"Really?" Griffin responded. He was wearing a white tank job and black shorts.
The real suspect's arrest can be seen at the very end of the bodycam video, deputies say.

What you see on social medias is not the norm. You always have to keep that in mind.
Even this one was arguably uploaded because it goes from the norm to positive. Usually it goes from the norm to negative though.
Never trust social media. It only uploads things that are not normal because normal is not interesting. If you take social media as average your world view will be fucked up beyond repair in all sorts of ways.

No, this was too much. Unnecessary. The jogger was clearly calm and understanding and the police officers come up with the race thing multiple times as if they wanted to start debating or something. The most important part of the interaction is the start. The FIRST thing the law enforcement officer (LEO) did when addressing the man was calmly TELL him WHY he was stopping him (REASONABLE ARTICULABLE SUSPICION; he details the description given of a nearby burglar suspect). The LEO did not escalate the situation; he did not begin the interaction with his weapon drawn, presume the man to be a threat to LEO or public safety, fear for his life, or start barking orders like “Stop! Show me your hands! Turn around! Get on the ground!”-and hypothetically, if someone, uniformed or otherwise, suddenly appeared and began yelling any of those commands (“lawful” or not) at you, wouldn’t your first thought be something akin to “Huh?, “What the hell?”, “Why?”, or even “Run!” (Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn); and the LEO did not rush up to the man intent on physically apprehending him (not reaching out to grab the man’s wrist, arm, or other part of his person) or taking him down. The LEO seemed patient and addressed this man with the PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENCE (“innocent until proven guilty”). The man’s immediate willingness to offer proof of his identification without being asked may have also contributed a large part to the nature of the encounter. From my experience with military operations and personnel, having/showing proof of identity is a norm so it was probably reflexive on his part. Glad that the man was able to make it home.

Now the officer repeatedly calling him “buddy” can most certainly be interpreted as condescending but we don’t know how this officer talks in everyday life. He cooperated by handing his id, offering literally 0 resistance when he was cuffed. Safe to assume you've got the wrong person.
Not neccesarily. Did you see the escaped inmate who convinced the officer he was a jogger and worked construction with his brother nearby.
@@GeorgiaWhisper He didn't have his ID tho.
Lol I know right.. this Mexican policeman was an idiot he knew it wasn't the right guy
@@GeorgiaWhisper you can’t even compare situations , the guy was white and never even showed ID , a white guy fed the white cop bullshyt and he took it and let him go . This guy actually gave his ID . You gave the worst example .
@TheSpeakerOfAllTruths. Ok, thank you.😊
Officer was acting nice while shaking this man down on the dl. Don't trust them, idc how they act in your face. They don't care about you, me, or anyone else. Innocent until proven guilty went out the window with these cliwns.
I can see why the officers got him mixed up with the real suspect. He was tall, dark skinned, full head of hair, and the suspect, short, balding, and on a totally different outfit from what they say he was wearing. Real close in identity.
😂😂 right?
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️Like WTF
Yall don't got it, the description usually comes from a witness...it could be a neighbor getting a quick glimpse of the guy n their description to the cop was ..uh I just saw a black dude in shorts n a white tank top running that way..that's it. They might have that to go by
@@rainydays516 but the description being “white guy with white shirt and shorts” what do you think would happen? They’d stop all the white guts?
@@princewembo8905 of course, if it fits the description and that person is around the area. Just a hell lot more black dudes doing shit then white dudes going for a jog lol
The day I got stopped walking out of Central Park and two cops approached me with the same professionalism as this cop in the video..They explained to me the reason of stopping me that I fully fit the description of the person that they were looking for,and the person they was looking at was carrying a gun.The fact that they was calm and collective made me cooperate with them.10min later they found the guy they were looking for they apologized we had few small talks and I went bout my day..We need more cops like this with professionalism and respectful to any citizens they encounter..Much love and Respect
Tru Fuckn That I’m so tired of good black men bein blamed for every fuckn thing thugs do whether your white or black were all one we need to love & respect each other…Gods watchin🙏🏻❤️
@@danielgoudge8465 yea.. i wouldnt put trust in God if he lets all that bad stuff happen
New York City sucks !
To white cops all Black men "fit the description" because all Black people look a like to them. Don't be a Black man jogging/running (unless around a track) because you know you're going to get detained until the white cops figure out what crime you're running from.
@@kujichaguliaself-determina7388 Stop getting your "news" from the mainstream media. or should is say lame stream media. The body cam shows that the cops actions were textbook. These guys risk their lives everyday so that you can live in a community that is safe and crime free. Stop playing the victim.
That sweet new father! He was very patient. Everyone was. I am glad this ended very calmly! He’s a new father, manager of the ICU, and a veteran. I’m so glad that the officer said he was not going to let anything happen to him. I’m glad they caught the right one!
A vet? He knows the drill, pardon the pun.
(Congrats on new baby x)
SHUT THE FK UP PLS. YALL FKIN PATHETIC.
7 police cars and several officers-really to catch a thief? Listen to their stupid excuses.
Yep millions of encounters a day just like this but let’s pay attention to the one that didn’t. That way we can call all police officers racists.
@@sereanaduwai8313 yeah idk why they need 7 police cars in 1 spot for a dude who may or may not be the suspect and is already detained...
Handcuffed because he fit the description - this is not acceptable.
God bless this man!
It must be so hard to be put in cuffs when you are innocent.
He must have been so upset but kept his composure.
very hard.
Yeah, "you are not under arrest" - we are just detaining you in handcuffs ! 😂 Did morons like this cop ever learn English and definitions of worts? If being detained in handcuffs is not being 'under arrest' then what the f**k else is it?
@9:47 Race Fight 🤔
The pig Sheriff only offered a job because he fears that lawsuit.. sue their pig asses.
People don't think about the moral prejudice and the perception of others when you get handcuffed. It's bad! Even if you get an apology after.
Most "suspects" don't have that level of training to stay submissive that long.
Anytime they start with “hey buddie you’re not in any trouble”, you fit the description even though the description wasn’t really that close. I see why they can’t find the guy because the whole department is detaining this man. Not sure why they cuff the guy though.
He probably fit the initial description over the phone or smth - those are bad most of the time. When the really questioned the witness it got clearer...
And they put him in cuffs because it may be internal guidelines to do that when detaining or just because it’s safer for the cops (and then safer for the suspect too when cops are more chill)
Read Ferenheit 451, Ray Bradbury. You'll get the picture..
It's racial profiling.
@@michaelveis8937 no it isn’t? They didn’t pick him because as a black person he was more likely to be a robber but because he was close to the initial description
@Nehemiah Scudder considering the number that get killed UNJUSTIFIED is very low, it really isnt
His tanktop says “heist”, who would go for a robbery in such outfit? A warning before a robbery? I am happy he remained collective and he absolutely handled himself extremely well. The officer was great too doing his job and make him understand. Two mature fellas here!
😂 didn’t even catch that, nice one!
😄😄😄
Really, I saw a lot.more than 2, you forgot backup!
The officers would look so dumb if this guy was the burglar and didn't stop him, since he was wearing that
😂
That's great and all, the cop was very respectful, but if i were the jogger i think i would have said I'm not going to identify myself, and if that means you have to arrest me that's fine. I agree the cop doesn't have any option but to investigate someone who fits the description, but on principle, i don't think cops should be able to require an ID from just any random innocent person on the street. It needs to be difficult and inconvenient for them to do that, or they'll do it all the time.
