Last year I lost my mother. Having gone through this loss, I involuntarily compared myself with Strange, thinking how I would dispose of the chance to return everything. Not only the best episode of the season, but also the best creation of the MCU. Deconstruction of Stephen's image was fantastic!
To me, the best thing about this episode is that it gives weight to all the warnings that have come throughout the franchise. "Don't mess with time", "don't mess with the fabric of reality" etc. We've never really seen the full consequences of breaking the rules. Now they've shown us the brutal reality, that reality can *end.*
I almost wonder if it's not a way of tongue in cheek commenting about Marvel comics use of time travel. In the comics time travel became overused and consequence-less at times, the MCU is giving us enough time travel to scratch the itch of wanting those types of stories, while giving themselves an out for why time travel doesn't just become the answer to ever issue in the MCU going forward.
To be fair, at that point Wanda was working on instinct, and Strange went to the source of the most knowledge ever and learned all he could so he could destroy everything

I did not think that this show would go so far as to have a tragic horror story, and goddamn did it end tragically. I was actually scared for Stephen’s mind and soul the entire time. And when he was pleading for Uatu to save his universe only to be shown how it was all his fault, chills. That final scene of Strange just whimpering “No, no, no, I’m sorry.” has to be one of the most heartbreaking scenes I have seen in years.
By having these events set in different universes far from the main sacred timeline I think they have much more freedom in telling what stories they wanna tell beyond their usual comfort zone. Strange talking to the Watcher made the situation hurt so much more. He was literally asking for forces beyond him to help him since he caused all that damage. But in the end, he needs to deal with the consequences of his actions and what he ended up losing because of it. This story was so good! I am excited to see what comes next.
Eh, I didn’t love his voice acting. A lot of it felt flat and I kinda wish they had gotten someone else to do it. A lot of the more emotional moments just felt a little forced within the acting, which sucks because Cumberbatch is a phenomenal actor and did absolutely incredible in Dr Strange. (That scene where he’s tearing up and holding Christine gets me in the feels!)

You will certainly ponder "How far are we allowed to go, to fix something that's broken?" The problem is the world needs a certain amount of us to be broken, why else would they deny so many of us all kinds of remedies that would 100% for sure cure or fix us? "One life, one choice, one moment can destroy the entire universe." - The Watcher I don't think I will ever forget that line and That conversation between Strange and The Watcher at the end of that episode gave me chills man and to just see Strange crying "I'm sorry" when all the universe is destroyed because of him was heart rending and I was so sure things would work out but it didn't. What if...keeps getting better and better. I never expected an episode like this. It was genuinely scary to see Strange crack to the point where he sacrificed the universe and still never got the one he loved. But like The Watcher sticks to his job description man. He does not interfere. Somebody give the man a raise cause he is doing his job haha. (Me trying to joke because this episode really cracked my mind). WOW. Way to go Marvel for not being scared to cross the line.
Being manipulative in time kinda hurts, especially Strange thinking and wishing he can turn back in time and undo anything, but it’s sad to say that no matter when we tried to turn back, it will never change. This episode taught me to not take life for granted. It’s all about acceptance and moving forward. We must be like good Doctor Strange, not the Supreme one.
This *totally* feels like it’s super important for the future movies, particularly insofar as the facts and lessons of (1) absolute points and (2) the potential to topple universes by messing with said points. So excited to see if those concepts make it into NWH or MoM.
I love it when studios let their writers, showmakers go nuts with their imaginations, and I love it when they make ballsy choices. This was BY FAR the best episode of What If…? I have to agree with you guys, this episode felt very much like what we would get from a full length movie. I think what makes this episode stand out the most was because of how personal it was. The previous episodes had their own elements and moments that helped us to connect, but this really hunkered down in it for its story, and it really connects deep with you, and does bring up serious questions, like: if you had the absolute ability to rewrite time itself, to save the one you love, how much are willing to give, and sacrifice? And, are we sure that it would even be worth it in the endgame? Best writing of the show so far. I loved it.
I like the visualisation at 13:45 just after Supreme Strange absorbs Stephen. As the wrecked car rises up into the air, it looks just like a tombstone. Also cant get over the fact that Strange was so powerful that he totally fucked up the time stone, held back the crumbling of an entire universe around him, and also survived the ending of the said universe!
No matter how many times he was warned, the thought of Cagiliastro breaking an Absolute point stood in his mind, so as arrogant as he is he thought he could do the same. It never went further as to what was the result for Cagiliastro, but remembering the movie the warnings are always at the end of the book...sometimes people dont ever finish because they get to the point they want.
This honestly finally gave me a lil bit of a hint of the kind of horror elements we can expect when they said Dr Strange 2 was a horror movie. That bit with both strangers mirrored vertically, the bit where evil strange (that the subtitles refer to as Strange Supreme) is the shadow and grabs Strange, maaaaaaaan this episode was insane
I'm just sharing an observation! This is exactly like wandavision!!! grief over the death of a loved one... and the need to bring them back to mess up reality, the absorption of power from agatha, in the end when he kind of builds a hex to protect him and christine from dying!!! Am I the only one seeing this???
Best episode of the series. It's quite unexpected from Disney / Marvel to release such a dark episode for an animated series. I wasn't expecting anything on this What if series but they surprised me there.
I love how the watcher got is some real screen time. I find him such an interesting character in all this. I think it’s the curiosity of learning a new character but also the fact that he is the only one who is the same throughout all episodes. I hope they continue to incorporate him more. he’s also great with his narration :D
A big theme of MCU Phase 4 so far seems to be that all of our heroes are potentially wayyyy more fucking terrifying than we might assume. EDIT: I also think this episode makes Strange’s movie more interesting in retrospect, since this Strange is basically what would happen if Kaecilius won.
*you, more than anyone else should understand that meddling time and events only leads to more destruction* - *The watcher* Chills bruh😱can't wait for NWH
The "absolute point" in time was unexpected cuz that is a hard heavy truth to accept. This was totally Doctor Strange 2 in Dark Strange's POV totally setting up Doctor Strange 3: M.O.M! Also, who else thought that Strange became trapped in the Infinity Stone of that reality?
@@DangSensei77 I wonder if all infinity stones have sorcerers in them and the watcher came and canceled them and put them in crystals 😂😂 cuz they were too destructive and dangerous.
The watcher actually stepping in to talk to Strange was such a strong moment where I went "Oh shit, I guess his universe is really doomed, no clever out". Cause the watcher keeps saying how he can't and won't interfere. So when he DOES it means that that's pretty much it. At first I thought he could maybe change the "absolute point" to be his hands getting hurt like the sacret timeline version. But I guess that's not how it works? That once an absolute point is defined in a universe, that's how it HAS to go, the multiverse variants having different absolute points doesn't matter?
@@jugram13 People are used to watching very smooth and detailed CGI animation from Pixar and other studios, this show is not quite at that standard,it has a bit of an outdated videogame cutscene feel in the way characters and objects move and the way they use celshading, that might be why some don't like it. I think it looks good enough especially the lighting is beautiful, I'd rather watch stuff like this than the typical stale 2d animation stuff that dc and marvel puts out and I like 2d animation way more.
I've never meant this phrase more than I mean it now: "Look how they massacred my boy!" I love how dark this went. And that Strange is the only one who has spoken to the man behind the universe: Uatu. This is just incredible!
How much are we betting that Derange will appear In The Multiverse of Madness. It be really easy since Cumberbatch just plays the same two characters and get double the pay

I loved the little touch that he was absorbing all those demons/creatures for years rather than hours. I’d really like to see this evil Dr Strange as opposed to Mephisto as the rumours are circling at the moment.

this ep is BONE CHILLING, i had goosebumps the whole time watching it omg. as if the last ep wasnt enough Marvel really said "let's hit all the emotions and philosophical thoughts on this one"
This is my favorite episode in the whole show so far and I’d be surprised if it can be topped. Honestly believe that this is Oscar worthy. The way Benedict Cumberbatch delivers his lines with pure emotion really sells the weight of the tragic story. This is hands down the best of any Marvel animation project(s) ever. It’s a shame we didn’t get this in live action form because it’ll be looked over by tons of critics and movie goers. This episode is too impressive for this show
I believe the Watcher interfered or is connected to Dr Strange being taken into the fiery shadows(glowing of the eyes are white not yellowish orange as Dark Doctor Strange/Strange Supreme is shown to have). Possibly due to the Watcher realizing Strange sensed/heard him, as he absorbed those beings. Deeming his involvement necessary to the greater picture. Unless it's one of the absorbed mystic beings taking control. Either way Dark Dr. Strange fighting against an Absolute(Fate) only to cause an ever growing catharsis. Just to be left alone with it all and in the same vein absolutely nothing. Seems all the more _Maddening_ given his ambitious and defiant nature.
Technically it's a crystal not a bubble. And it's not floating in space cause there is no space in a destroyed universe. If a universe is destroyed, there is nothing left, not even space .
I like that strange acknowledges the watcher observing everything showing us that he’s a legit entity watching over everything and not just some bs character made for the story
The thing is Steven is a good guy in heart, so not only he still couldn't lived with Christine, he also has to bear the sin of killing trillions and destroyed his own universe, That's one bad day
This episode was, by far, the saddest one to date. Holy shit. I believe this will implications for what the Multiverse of Madness has. Also, the horror elements throughout this episode? Now, I'm more hyped for what's to come in that movie.
Have to admit, I enjoyed this episode way more than I expected to. It is the most fleshed out, most complete episode so far of the "What If" series. And you guys are spot on, this doesn't feel like an episode, it feels like a full fledged movie.
I love the fact his hands were the source of his ego. Also wanting to bargin at the end was very interesting as well. It's interesting to think is he encased in a form of infinity stone such as power...due to his consumption ?
This felt like a classic What If? Story where thanks to a decision the universe comes to an end. Also now Dr. Strange is trapped in his own personal hell.

i dont want to cry again
@@Batman1998- in spider's movie he is definitely the central focus, as strange was saying that the problem with him is that he is trying to live two different lives, and how fitting to learn more about this from the other spideys
Also in MoM, dr.strange will eventually have to make Wanda understand and help her cope with what has happened..also since I dont read plot leaks I literally dont know much about these films than the obvious spoilers..
I want them to very much avoid turning Wanda into a villain because I'm pretty sick of it.
this episode was so heartbreaking but so incredible, definitely my favorite so far. poor strange.
This episode legitimately brought me to tears. Benedict was amazing.
His voice breaking at the end when he said "I was wrong" and "No no no" and "I'm so, so sorry" really broke my heart. I seriously cried.
Definitely the best voice acting in the show
@@sparkymularkey6970 I never expected an animated concept series to do this to me lol yea it made me cry too man.
"One life, one choice, one moment can destroy the entire universe." - The Watcher
I don't think I will ever forget that line and That conversation between Strange and The Watcher at the end of that episode gave me chills man and to just see Strange crying "I'm sorry" when all the universe is destroyed because of him was heart rending and I was so sure things would work out but it didn't.
Benedict Cumberbatch's "no no no no noo..." when Christine inks away always gets me right in the feels
This is the heaviest emotional and spiritually jarring MCU content ever. You can’t convince me otherwise.
That would be really cool if the infinity stones were leftover byproducts of failed universes and that’s why they’re so powerful.
Edit: grammar edits
wait that’s actually a really good theory holy shit
@@JumpPanda that’s an amazing theory damn I never though of that one
This episode really made me tear up in the end 😢all he wanted his heart back..
But at what cost? Lol
One of the things that made me cry this year. What a sad, tragic and heartbreaking episode. I feel so bad for Strange.
Man, this episode and Wandavision has taught us that grief is very powerful! Definitely my favorite episode by far 🔥
I loved it.
The this episode ended with Strange alone in his crystal ball makes me wonder of he could eventually expand and build his own universe.
I think its the Mirror Dimension or a shield of some kind made from it
thats what i was thinking, maybe this evil strange will show up in multiverse of madness?
So much for a kids show. Glad to see the show actually taking risks. Hoping to see more in the future episodes.
I definitely don’t think What If is a kids show
Don’t underestimate kids 🙂
It's TV-14. Definitely not kids show
When was it ever considered a kids show? There was literally a serial killer last episode like what..
Animation doesn't mean kids in the slightest...
Vergil: "I need more power."
Doctor Strange: "I only require more power."
Vergil: splits himself in two.
Doctor Strange: gets split in two.
Man, this episode exceeds my own expectations for ‘What If...?’! I literally teared up at the end of the episode.
Man, Strange sensing and speaking directly with the Watcher was CRAZY COOL
This honestly finally gave me a lil bit of a hint of the kind of horror elements we can expect when they said Dr Strange 2 was a horror movie. That bit with both strangers mirrored vertically, the bit where evil strange (that the subtitles refer to as Strange Supreme) is the shadow and grabs Strange, maaaaaaaan this episode was insane
That shadow bit gave me killer clowns from outer space vibes.
I'm just sharing an observation! This is exactly like wandavision!!! grief over the death of a loved one... and the need to bring them back to mess up reality, the absorption of power from agatha, in the end when he kind of builds a hex to protect him and christine from dying!!! Am I the only one seeing this???
The episode was just phenomenal and bonkers!!!
Best episode of the series. It's quite unexpected from Disney / Marvel to release such a dark episode for an animated series. I wasn't expecting anything on this What if series but they surprised me there.
+Matenfer
Same here.
After last episode had hulk exploding, nothing seems too dark
Disney killed Bambi's mom. This episode could have been darker if they wanted too.
I also liked the second episode very much
“Did you ever hear the tragedy of Stephen Strange the Sorcerer Supreme? I thought not. It's not a story the The Ancient One would tell you”
That Scream of NO on the final try of saving Christine seems like his breaking point like with Wanda screaming at her breaking point
Who is Kaecilius?
@@jaredlewis3001 the main villain of Doctor Strange 1, um hello?
Wait till the zombies episode lol
@@iRoboticGaming To be fair to the guy, this was when Marvel's villains were pretty forgettable at the time (IMO) 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣.
@@markrogers6601 no, Marvel villains aren't forgettable, and Kaecilius definitely wasn't. Mads Mikkelsen gave an exquisite performance
This episode really hit home. I'd do anything to have my grandparents back. At the same time, I'm glad that they're not suffering anymore.
*you, more than anyone else should understand that meddling time and events only leads to more destruction* - *The watcher* Chills bruh😱can't wait for NWH
This episode not only was heartbreaking but a massive lesson. This is definitely unexpected, the best episode by a country mile. Loved the reaction.
The fact that this strange was left floating through nothing, without a universe… I definitely expect to see him again👀
Hmm yes, Doctor Strange 3
I know you meant 2
Woah I didn’t even think of him being stuck in an infinity stone in another reality..
@@DangSensei77 I wonder if all infinity stones have sorcerers in them and the watcher came and canceled them and put them in crystals 😂😂 cuz they were too destructive and dangerous.
"Strange would never do something so reckless with time in No Way Home!"

@@nikkiecampbell2473 loki has more of that chance tbh both of them are still a threat to reality
@@dabmoontos so true
Dang. I shed a lot of tears during this episode. It was fantastic
It feels like character development and plot that the real MCU Doctor Strange would go through
It feels like the What If eps really give freedom for characters to do as they please.
All the “the animation is trash” complaints have gone down the drain after this episode.
WHAT!? "The animation is trash"?? Are they like have no fucking eyes? Even a blind people can agree that the animation is beautiful
F those people!!!!!!!

"Delightfully depressing."
A term I coined myself when it comes to these stories.
I've never meant this phrase more than I mean it now: "Look how they massacred my boy!"
I love how dark this went. And that Strange is the only one who has spoken to the man behind the universe: Uatu. This is just incredible!
How much are we betting that Derange will appear In The Multiverse of Madness. It be really easy since Cumberbatch just plays the same two characters and get double the pay
If he is i don't think he will be a villain more so a character that warns mcu strange about his mistake and how wanda is doing the same thing
This episode also solved the plothole of Avengers Endgame "Why Doctor Strange didn't revived Iron Man with the time stone?"
What about other 99% plotholes? And no they didn't solved. They retconed it.

This episode is too impressive for this show
Yay!! Glad you were able to get this up! Great reaction! This episode is NUTS!! I think it is my favorite of the season so far!
I’ll be sure to watch yours too!!
This was honestly one of my favorite things Marvel Studios has ever produced
If this is cannon, somewhere there's a doctor strange in the multiverse floating through the space in a bubble!!
HE CAME DOWN IN A BUBBLE, DOUG
It is Canon
Technically it's a crystal not a bubble. And it's not floating in space cause there is no space in a destroyed universe. If a universe is destroyed, there is nothing left, not even space .

I like that strange acknowledges the watcher observing everything showing us that he’s a legit entity watching over everything and not just some bs character made for the story
I can't believe Strange really forced her to die over and over again. Also, does anyone else think Dark Strange's cloak was Agatha's?
Pretty sure this episode was prepared for the Horror that will be seen in the Multiverse of Madness.
The thing is Steven is a good guy in heart, so not only he still couldn't lived with Christine, he also has to bear the sin of killing trillions and destroyed his own universe, That's one bad day

Have to admit, I enjoyed this episode way more than I expected to. It is the most fleshed out, most complete episode so far of the "What If" series. And you guys are spot on, this doesn't feel like an episode, it feels like a full fledged movie.
Did u know Benedict Cumberbatch is once again the voice of both the main protagonist and antagonist of the story.
