After seeing the picture at 6:00, I am SO jealous of your collection! I am starting my own 3D printed R2, mostly after watching your podcast! Great job!
i had made my own r2 body frame. i had the same warping problem but i figured as long as it was sturdy it didnt matter after i glued them together, though i am having troubles with the rest of the build being as most of the parts are for a 200mm bed where as mine is 190mm. im currently working on designing my own dome as im building an r4 droid
would heating the warped parts up with a heat gun to reshape the parts by hand. I know that this works with some filaments and in 3d pens, so I wonder if it would've worked for you. really glad I found this series.
I have had some limited success with a heat gun on other projects, so that might have helped some of the warping here. But the best thing is to not have warping to begin with. With the printers I'm using now I get very little to no warping, so it's not really an issue anymore.
Awesome work!! I'm my self almost done with the body, definitely had issues with lifting as well but learned using helper discs on the edge corners of each piece fixed it a lot. But I also have a delta printer so I was able to get the beams printed upright. Keep up the work your videos have helped me greatly
+Pie Air I had to pause the project over the winter and due to some other reasons but I'm back to it so hopefully I will be able to make another installment fairly soon
Thanks, I already have another printer with a heated bed now. Although I did find that combining glue stick with Buildtak actually got rid of 95% or more of my warping issues on the old printer.
Between the 3D printing of the head and the body including the legs of R2D2, how many rolls of PLA filament do I use to get an idea of the money spent just on printing?
right i know this video is super old and you might already know this trick but just incase. If you bump into a lot of warping on flat parts i reccomend a hot bath for them it makes the plastic more plyable letting you bend it and flatten it against something to fix it. sorry for typoes i havent slept yet at its 6 am xD... happy printing!!
Thanks. You're right, that would probably have helped. I've largely solved the problem of warping now through a combination of build tak and glue stick.
Hello I am French and I am starting to print the parts of the R2D2 skeleton but I am looking for the assembly guide for this framework, how can I find it if it exists Thank you for your videos on the R2D2 assembly
Yes, the process is a long one...no matter what path you take. Mine is a combination of wood, aluminium, and 3D printed parts. The build just ticked over 1 year last week. I'm at about 50%. EEEK!!
hey, do you by chance have the 123D file(s) for R2's dome? I'm also doing the skeletal version like James but I don't want the R6 head. I'd like to take the R2 dome and make it skeletal if that makes sense. Keep up the great work. Mine taken me a couple of years or so due to printer issues.
Mrbaddeley has a link you can download the 123D files for the dome on his Thingiverse page. Here it is: onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=E84CB8FD47152532!15273&authkey=!AGa5uWPtHTWmVno&ithint=folder%2c
Professor Grewbeard Yes actually, I have the legs mostly done if you want to check my Instagram for a photo of them. And I am printing the body now. But I did have some printer issues that I have only recently sorted out, so that did delay me some. I will be making more videos about this project relatively soon
Hey I'm about to start building this same model. I know it's a big job and I will take my time. But would you recommend building this frame or the v2 he has up to download now? Thanks again Nathan
I'm actually considering scrapping this frame and just starting over with the V2. (I'd still keep the dome and the one leg that I've finished.) It just seems simpler and better thought out for 3D printing. But I don't have any experience with it yet, aside from printing a few test pieces, so I can't really say for sure which is better.
Mighty Jabba's Collection I'm going to print it with the xyz junior I just spent the last week cutting most of it up so I can print it on the smaller print bed. It's going to take a very long time but I'll do my best and it will be worth it. And yeah your dome looks fantastic so that's what Im going to make first.
It's 9” x 5.9” x 5.5” or 230 mm x 150 mm x 140 mm. There are actually a couple of parts that are too big for the build plate, but I was able to slightly extend it with some cardboard since it's just a matter of millimeters.
+John Batchler I used the Dremel 3D Idea Builder, but I wouldn’t recommend it because it lacks a heated bed and that led to some warping issues. I recommend the Creality CR-10 now because of its size, quality and price
Oh and also don't buy 3D Printers that either cost more than £200, and especially don't buy any machines from companies that don't specifically do 3D Printers and have just added them to their product line, go with people who essentially sell printers and not companies joining the hype
Another wonderful update, R2 is coming along great, can't wait to see him finished next year

Thanks and good luck! I assume you saw my latest update video about the project?
Sandy and Rotta RIP! So young, so bright.

Awesome! thank you for the videos, I am looking forward to making an R2 for myself.
Looking great. Can't wait to see the finished product. Also, where can we send donations or flowers for Rodda and friend? Lol
awesome my friends, simply awesome !!!
I'm doing the same thing, i've already done the leg and up to the feet. the dome i did diferently. looks great

A heat gun can be used to carefully straighten the long thin pieces.
Where is the Part #3 ?
Awesome job ! You're inspiring me so much !
+Pie Air I had to pause the project over the winter and due to some other reasons but I'm back to it so hopefully I will be able to make another installment fairly soon
#RIPSandyandRotta2016 they will be missed dearly :(
I suggest you put some money into a headed print bed, it allows the product to remain evenly heated and lessen the effects of the warping
Thanks, I already have another printer with a heated bed now. Although I did find that combining glue stick with Buildtak actually got rid of 95% or more of my warping issues on the old printer.
Very cool
enjoying this series :D
Between the 3D printing of the head and the body including the legs of R2D2, how many rolls of PLA filament do I use to get an idea of the money spent just on printing?
Honestly I don’t remember but the cost of the filament was relatively minor, especially since filament isn’t as expensive as it used to be
right i know this video is super old and you might already know this trick but just incase. I was planning to do this, before I saw this Video, and I thaught "I can't do this" but this video series inspired me
I’m glad to hear that. I’m really not that handy so if I can do it, just about anyone can with sufficient motivation
Hello I am French and I am starting to print the parts of the R2D2 skeleton but I am looking for the assembly guide for this framework, how can I find it if it exists Thank you for your videos on the R2D2 assembly
I’m having a issue understanding the top rings and how they would go together. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Would heating the parts with something like a heat gun help to un warp them?
Possibly, but the best solution is to just print them properly in the first place. Now that I have better printers this wouldn’t be an issue
Do you use a Dremel 3D printer? I'm gonna try and follow what you did to build my R2-D2. Thanks, if you respond.
Yes, I'm using the first model of Dremel 3D Idea Builder. Good luck with your build. It's a lot of work, and I'm still kind of stalled at the moment.
Nooo. Not Sandy & Rotta.. They were so young, with a bright future.
Have you gone back to work on this yet?
Professor Grewbeard Yes actually, I have the legs mostly done if you want to check my Instagram for a photo of them. And I am printing the body now. But I did have some printer issues that I have only recently sorted out, so that did delay me some. I will be making more videos about this project relatively soon
Jabba howmuch infill did you use at he parts? Greetz joey degener
how much filament did you use this time you said 3-4 kg of filament for the head,But i would like to know about the body.
+JellyBean Films Honestly I kind of lost track with the body frame so I'm not entirely sure. Maybe 4-5 if I had to guess
Mighty Jabba's Collection thank you I can't wait to see the rest of the r2d2 being built by you.
Hi. How many spools did you need for the different parts (or in total) for the R2-D2 ?
Nikolaos Tsarmpopoulos I’m afraid I don’t really know. It’s not a gigantic number though
It was only half way through your video I realized you actually sound like George Lucas 🤣
Hey I'm about to start building this same model. I know it's a big job and I will take my time. But would you recommend building this frame or the v2 he has up to download now? Thanks again Nathan

Thanks mate I look forward to more videos

Wait
*rotta?*
:o
I am. Building the same models to make my custom Color droid
Is that the csr or csl
Hey again, Which program were you using to look at all of the pieces of the frame together?
I was using 123D Design, I believe. That's what they were designed in
Can this design be used for a motorized version?
Yes, in fact it is intended to be motorized but I am just not using that aspect of it
what siz is your build plate that you using?
It's 9” x 5.9” x 5.5” or 230 mm x 150 mm x 140 mm. There are actually a couple of parts that are too big for the build plate, but I was able to slightly extend it with some cardboard since it's just a matter of millimeters.
300x300mm bed should have no problems printing all the needed R2 parts?
what type of 3d printer you used?
+John Batchler I used the Dremel 3D Idea Builder, but I wouldn’t recommend it because it lacks a heated bed and that led to some warping issues. I recommend the Creality CR-10 now because of its size, quality and price
If anyone is watching this these days
Learn from this and perfect your prints before you go ahead and print 40 parts taking hundreds of hours
