This is a true story, slightly embellished for the film but basically true nonetheless. What is very strange to me is that when the pilot betrayed Escobar he knew perfectly well there would be severe reprisals, yet he went on with his life as if it were all back to normal oblivious to the inevitability of a hit. In high school I thrift shopped at the Salvation Army where he was basically sentenced to death. They put him up in the Pines Motel in just about the worst part of Baton Rouge and believe me, there are a bunch of bad places in Big Raggedy.
