Heya Mike I also use a Sony A7r4 but with an a. I digiscope wildlife with it and my starting focal length is around 1000mm. I went through a time shooting crop mode but discovered I was missing shots going out of frame and that was enough for me to stop using it. I still miss images using full frame. The extra file size is a pain but I cull my shots after a shoot and you can always crop the images in post so... Swings and roundabouts. Enjoying the vids fella....Keep 'em coming.
happy new year Mike! One thing I dont understand is the extra reach thing... it's still the same reach as full frame right? I assumed crop mode doesnt do anything but discard the cropped areas, have I got this wrong?
Happy new year mate! So, it changes the field of view. You are correct in the respect that it discards the part of the image it's "cropping out", thus enlarging the subject in the frame, giving the impression of "extra reach"
I've been lucky shooting Kites previously at places like Holme Fen and Barnack Hills and Holes. I won't mention Gigrin Farm as the set up there is awesome
On my last video I mentioned that I often use crop mode on my R5, th-cam.com/video/hhKyq2Qj93Q/w-d-xo.html , it is 17mp but the sensor is far better. Unfortunately due to the vagaries of TH-cam I have only had 100 views. Daft when a video of a cat licking it's **** can go viral.
Maybe help you Roger Hance and Mike Lane have excellent channels on TH-cam. I’m sure they will be a big help to you with wildlife photography. I think it’s near you,
