    This is a great video - gets to the point right away and shows all the key steps required to change your toilet yourself. Having done this today though, I can tell you this is no 20 minute job, especially if you're are team of one. Keep in mind that the hardware is quite heavy, you're working in extremely narrow awkward places and once you start removing the old toilet, you may find some "surprises" that are not covered in the video (in my case, whoever installed the previous toilet did an awful job of cutting one of the johnny bolts afterward and it took me 10 minutes and some creativity to remove the nut from it). I'd say it took me anywhere between 1.5 to 2 hours from new toilet in box to old toilet on curb with new one fully functional (and any cleanup after). Not difficult, but it took some work and now I have a brand new toilet (that I bought on an amazing sale at Lowes) purchased and installed for $120 everything in. Can't beat the satisfaction of knowing that :-).

    I just found this video while looking for videos on how to replace my top trim & bottom in my restroom. I had a guy come a few months ago & gutted my bathroom bc I wanted a new vanity, trim, & flooring. But he lives 2 1/2 hours down south in Raceland, La. and everytime I ask him when he's coming back to finish the job he's ALREADY been paid to do, I get excuses! Meanwhile my 700 dollar vanity has been sitting on my front porch for about 3 months now.😡🤬 So, I figured I'd look up some DIY Videos & see what all tools I'll need & go to Lowes & get them and try my best to get it done myself. And since watching this, I've decided to go ahead and get me a new toilet as well. So just wanted to say thank you very much for sharing. Eventhough it's 4yrs old, I'm very glad it's still up & I came across it.😁
    Thanks from Southeast Louisiana! WHODATNATION Eventhough I haven't watched any football since they decided to disrespect our Flag & all the other "WOKE" nonsense! That was/still is very heartbreaking to see our Great Country going in a very bad direction ALL BC THEY CHEATED BIG TIME & STOLE OUR ELECTION! The TRUTH & EVIDENCE is coming out more & more everyday. Especially in Wisconsin. Biden is such a feckless, weak, and fake resident that obviously has Dementia bc my dad, RIP was diagnosed with it at age 55 & passed away from a Stroke at 57. Now his mom, my grandma that's 81 has Dementia & Biden acts just like my dad did & now my grandma! He's such an Embarrassment on the World stage, EVERYONE knows he did not get 81 million votes, more than Obama. That right there gave it away. They cheated to dang much. But Trump will be back soon, when we win the House & hopefully the Senate in November, that'll be Trump governing us through the PATRIOTS that he's been supporting throughout the country! Watch out for Liz the snake Cheney. I heard she's been fund raising to RUN FOR PRESIDENT AGAINST TRUMP. Bc they have no one else. No one likes our fake VP, but they do like Liz now & will vote for her along with the Trump Haters! Not sure how that's legal beings she's on the 1/6 unselect committee, she's trying to get him to NOT be able to run again. That should disqualify her if not jail her evil butt.. Not sure how I got on that rant.. lol
    Anyway, thanks again!

    i see in some videos the new wax is first placed on the toilet and then the toilet is aligned and pressed against the floor/flange, and in some other videos the wax is placed on the floor (on the flange) and then the toilet is pressed on top of the wax ring. i personally think placing the wax ring on the floor/flange is safer as it can prevent the wax from entering into the sewage line if a misalignment error occurs when placing the toilet, but curious what others think. Thank you !

    The only thing I would add is to use a level to ensure the toilet is leveled in both direction. Sometime you need to add couple wood chips to level the toilet based on the bathroom floor condition

    Does the flange have to be flush or close to flush to the finished floor? Seems like this one is a good 1/4 inch higher than the floor, is that ok? Asking because i am replacing the old vinyl tiles from a second bathroom and am looking to understand if i need to make sure the flange is flush or not

    Video well done. I want to make a few pointers replacing a toilet in an older house:
    1) measure from wall to centre of bolt holding toilet; 13" versus 15" (I got caught; my old toilet was 13" from back wall. The 15" did fit but I couldn't get the tank on the toilet).
    2) small wet/dry vacuum suck out water from tank and bottom of toilet
    3) seperate tank from toilet (easier on back)
    4) small catch basin for water drips after instaling supply line
    5) use a bit of dish washing detergent as whetting agent on the rubber gasket between new tank and toilet

      @irondarwin2483 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@davidpierce9949 It doesn't need to, just makes it easier working with 2 lighter pieces. Leaving the tank on makes it heavier and a bit awkward.

  • @misterlarryb

    Def to the point and compact, great job as other comments say, but I was hoping to learn how to choose regular or extra thick wax ring, shim the base level or not, caulk the base or not, and why not put the wax ring on the toilet, put the toilet on the flange and weight it and twist it to seat the wax ring like the instructions say? Or is bolt-tight good enough? Also, I would only open the supply valve enough so the overflow can keep the tank from overflowing in the event that the tank valve fails. Full open could cause a flood.

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For choosing the correct wax gasket depends on the flange height. If the flange is below the floor/ sub floor then you will want to use the jumbo/ extra thick. If the flange is above the flooring or even then you will want to use the smaller thinner one. You don't need to shim the toilet level as much as to shim it so it doesn't rock side to side or front to back. Push the toilet into the gasket and then snug the jonni bolts. Test the toilet to see if it rocks. If not you should be good without the shims if it rocks then add a shim to the opposite side to where the toilet has the most contact with the flooring. I normally do not caulk the base. If there's a leak I would want it to come out onto the floor so it can be seen and fixed before it damages the sub flooring. If caulked it will run into the crawl space or basement. I only caulk them when its somewhere were the toilet will be rocked around from someone getting on and off it to help give it some added strength to keep the seal/ was gasket from breaking. You can do it that way. They want you to put wax onto toilet base set base and then assembly the toilet. I assembly the entire toilet and set it into the wax as I find it faster and easier to assemble not up against the wall. Knock on wood I haven't had a leak doing it this way. AS you set the toilet you should feel the squish of the wax. If you don't you will need a thicker wax gasket. This is one of the video's we would like to redo to go into more detail/ of an explanation.

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did he put the washer under the flange to ensure that the jonni bolt doesn't pull though the flange? Is the flange rotten? Not sure what type of sub floor you have if its wood you can cut the old bolt off/ out and use a toilet lag something like this -> amzn.to/2BasVul Just be sure not to over tighten it. You can first drill a small pilot hole and then put the nut on the stud and run it into the wood sub floor to the correct high for the toilet or as close as you can get it. Then set wax gasket and continue with installation.

      if you used the wax ring with the horn on it that's why use a wax ring without the black horn

    • @nathanielaranda8407
      @nathanielaranda8407 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael A the black part on the bottom of the wax ring, over time it can shift and when you flush the toilet 🚽 the water can splash out causing a leak at the base, it’s better to get the one without the black piece. Look up toilet leaking number one reason why. Here on TH-cam.

      The only one I can think of is make sure to go with a brand name one and maybe do a little research on each and see what people are having problems with. Some have one jet down low in the bowl I think it was a Toto brand & others are like a common toilet with jets in bowl and one down low. Some use a larger flapper to let more water down faster to have a better flush. I know there's one don't remember the brand off the top of my head that flushed well but if it did clog the bottom was shaped differently so it was hard to get a plunger to seal so you would have to snake it to remove the clog. The one I use the most and have in my house is a Gerber Viper, comfort height W/ elongated bowl works well has a larger flapper and is priced mid range not cheap but not over priced as well. You might find a better quality video but this one shows the Gerber Viper in testing. th-cam.com/video/FalvA10CYxY/w-d-xo.html You're welcome, Glad we could help. @thediyguydotnet are you supposed to caulk the bottom of the toilet ?

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Caulking the bottom of the toilet is all preference. I normally do not caulk the toilet base. Some ppl feel its stops stuff from getting under the toilet but it also stops water from getting out if there's a leak.
