    My favorite Tea For Two on youtube (after Tatum himself). It feels the most Tatum-like because Matt hasn't just memorized the transcription, he's created his own arrangement using Tatum's vocabulary and it's just amazing. The hard swing, the smooth and energetic runs, the flourishes. Love love love it.

      Yuja Wang is a great pianist but her Tea for Two does not sound like Tatum's. Meanwhile this one sounds like how a young Art Tatum himself might have sounded.

  • @downpatmusic
    @downpatmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Impressive what this young man can do on this small piano, imagine him on a fast and responsive modern piano action of say a Yamaha Grand or Steinway? What he does an excellent job here technically speaking, is he does not play with the typical finger legato, but rather uses techniques shared by the masters themselves which is detached note playing so that your fingers are free to move around the country, the keyboard meaning! Both Oscar Petterson and Art Tatum had a precise control over the duration of the notes they played and how long they held them down with their fingers. Master this technically and you have limitless technique and headroom to play whatever you want to both classically or in any style of music such as this jazz style.

      Rachmaninoff was an excellent pianist, let’s not forget that. It was Horowitz who said if Tatum ever takes up Classical they’re finished. But let’s not get carried away, these two were some of the finest pianists we’ve ever seen, and whether Tatum could have handled Rach’s 3rd piano concerto is debatable. Think they were being respectful as opposed to honest.

    There's no such thing as THE BEST of course, though I think Tatum was a better pianist than either Morton or Joplin - more refined technique more complex rhythm and harmonies.
    We can only guess how Liszt or Alkan played, but I think just pianistically speaking there were a number of classical pianists who could easily rival or surpass Tatum. (Rachmaninoff, Lhevinne, Godowsky, Hoffman, Barere are just a few examples of superb pianism) Yes, he may not have been the best but he was unique.

    • @jomtien123
      @jomtien123 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You obviously have not read any comments from Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Toscanini and many other great classical musicians about Art Tatum.
      By comparing Joplin to Art Tatum you are either a very shallow musician or jealous of Tatum and trying to candidly divert people's opinions of him with your untrue words! Fortunately most true musicians (including you perhaps!) know the truth!

    • @Santosificationable
      @Santosificationable 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you like me, who has a bias on Tatum but still hopes to have other people confirm the bias by pretending not to agree on the majority vote?
      Anyway, consider this - which jazz pianist would you consider to have more "pianism" - Tatum or Peterson? In my opinion Art Tatum is kind of like the master, Michelangeli. He's up there, definitely one of the best, but to really appreciate his pianism you have to read behind the lines (pun intended). He did not employ Cziffra's "virtuoso" sound, or Horowitz's "thunderous" quality. But when you start seeing Yuja Wang supposedly one of today's most technical pianists struggle with this piece, and then listen to the original version, you start really appreciating the mastery of Tatum.
      I personally think he's one of the very greatest pianists, even when compared with Horowitz or Michelangeli. Only a musician above and beyond "virtuoso" level could achieve this sound quality, in my opinion.

    I think tatum is one of the greatest pianists of the world but not the best (think of Liszt or Alkan,Jelly Roll Morton or Scott Joplin). Although there's no one like him, speaking in terms of improvisation and arrangement (maybe Liszt with his tons of trasncriptions would compete in arrangement).

    • @Santosificationable
      @Santosificationable 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He's most certainly one of the best of all time. Very few pianists, even classical, could match him. Only the likes of Arrau, Horowitz, Rubinstein, or Rachmaninoff could.

      Scott Joplin better than Art Tatum? That is absolutely laughable. The hardest of Scott Joplin's piano pieces are a breeze for anyone with even the makings of a half decent technique. There is no evidence that Scott Joplin was considered to be an exceptional pianist amongst his contemporaries, let alone one of the greatest of all virtuosi. Jelly Roll Morten was a great player but he is universes behind Tatum; it isn't even close.
