Olympus, freeze, dust, waterproof, ok, M4/3 but with a tripod, no problem, plus great IBIS, hand held. Lighter, more compact, cheaper, unless printing to poster size no discenable diff.
Yepp. I went Olympus and I'm not looking back. Frames at base ISO (where you'd shoot most of your frames) on MFT won't look different from larger sensor images. Plus you get shorter exposure times for similar depth of field. You carry less. Heck, for most landscape work shooting single frames you'd not even need a tripod. And 20MP is plenty to print from. Even poster size prints will look great when viewed from a reasonable viewing distance. I've printed city scenes from 12MP files to A2 and larger and these prints sold through a gallery. For static scenes, you might get away with high-res mode which gives you 80MP raw files if you really need that resolution (again, what for?!). Live composite is great too. Star trails, catching storms/lightning etc. works well.
I have had lumix and now olympus (alongside my canon) and they top out about 20Mp, a far cry from the resolution of the A7R4. In fairness though he's not printing very large at all at the end.
Bang it on the rocks a few times, that usually fixes it. Another fix if that doesn't work, my Sony's like to sleep in too, so if they are sluggish like that, you can remove the lens and pour a shot of espresso directly into the sensor. It wakes it RIGHT up!
Because of this video, I don't only want to go hiking, I also just want to get my camera and take pictures. Thanks for the inspiration, and I hope your gear won't let you down in the future.
I have used Nikon camera bodies and lenses for years, SLRs, DSLRs and now mirrorless models, cold weather, hot weather, damp conditions. I have never had a failure like the one shown in this video.
Absolutely, i used my Nikon D7500 in extreme cold temperature and it works fine like cold doesn't matter.. Watching this video made me love even more my nikon..❤❤🙌🙏
Same here. Used Nikons in extremely cold temps with no issues beyond the LCD temporarily freezing at - 20 degrees. I've have photographer friends who have had Sonys break randomly as well.
Ok, feel free to l augh.....but I have a Nikon D5100 that I got in 2012 for filmmaking, and on one shoot it fell down a 45 degree dirt and rock hill where it rolled, tumbled, and hopped down to the bottom. I thought for SURE it was done. Well, just a small scratch on the monitor, and the flash won't open anymore (I don't use the flash for filmmaking anyway) and otherwise it is perfect. I cannot believe it. Still using it to this day.
I’ve had that exact same problem with my Sony camera. It’s an easy fix. First take the lens off the camera. Then you’ll want to hold the camera in your right hand. Then walk to the edge of the highest cliff you can find and toss that pos off the edge as far as you can. Next go home and order a new Fuji, Canon, or Nikon. Problem fixed! Easy.
I always carry 3 camera bodies or at least 2 for every professional project, electronics are electronics and no matter the brand there's always a chance of failure my friend!I hope it can be fixed.
How on God'd green, flat earth did you manage to stay so calm when your camera craps out at the moment of an epic shot???? If it were me, sailors and truck drivers around the world would curl up into the fetal position from shame once my cursing started to echo around all corners of the world! Major respect sir! :)
My Nikon F3 film camera took a heck of a beating. D7000, D810, D850 have all taking and continue to take real beatings including drops. I am not a studio photographer. I’m in woods, field, cities, sporting venues, concert halls for chamber music. During much actual active shooting situations the strap is off and poop happens. I’ve never had a Nikon lens or camera body fail me. I have had non-Nikon lenses break after a small drop off a car seat. But I’ve had Nikon lenses drop from the bleachers and still function well. But that’s all F and D body equipment. One of the things that concerns me about Z body and lenses is: “Will the take the use and abuse?” Given past experiences I’d suggest yes.
I dropped my Nikon in the lake. It was 4 feet down i took out my phone and wallet and jumped in to get it. Took the battery out and put it in the oven to dry it out lol.. That was 5 years ago and it still works great , Just had to clean the sensor , But the 70-300 vr did not make it ..
The z7 ll’s autofocus might not be quite up to snuff with Sony, but it has an amazing sensor for landscape photography. Also the ability to set up to 15 min exposures in camera is a plus. Coupled with the 14-24 s lens, you will be amazed at the quality of the images!
Agree, the auto focus is not an issue here because Z7II lags only in subject tracking for fast moving subjects which is not the case for landscape photography.
Not that anything you hear on the internet is real, but I did hear that Nikon has another firmware upgrade in September'ish that will improve the AF even more and should take care of many of the few lagging issues that come up with fast moving objects and eyes with video. Love my Z7ii regardless.
Indeed, Nikon files are gorgeous! Although I don’t need it being into landscape photography, I look forward to them fixing their auto focus issues and changing the tilt screen for vloggers so that they can financially return in the top and remain financially solvent.
The Z 14-30 is less expensive, a lot lighter, zero focus breathing, as sharp as 14-24 and is preferred by many architectural and landscape photographs over the 14-24. But NEF (lossless compressed available) even having more data in shadows than ARW is still limited to 14 bits. GFX’s 16 bits, you must try this. Get some GFX 100S RAF files and play with them. GFX is “the” system for landscape and portrait - that’s of course only my humble opinion ☺️
Right there with you on that one! That description was absolute gold. Though, I think it was the Sony that actually had the burst appendix.... (Oooof....) My heart broke for Gavin on that one. Also, "Beavers?!?" lololol
Loved the video. (shame about the gear malfunction). Loved the humour, especially the Yorkshire angle. I am reminded of a camping trip I went on to the Lake District back in the 1970's. There were teenagers from all over the country and one evening we all decided to have a game of football. One lad from Cheshire said "how about Northerners v Southerners?" Immediately, a furious lad from Leeds boomed out the immortal line "I'm not a Northerner, I'm a Yorkshireman". It still makes me laugh to this day. (Edit: I've subscribed!)
NASA has ordered 53 standard Nikon D5 cameras with no special hardware modifications. these D5 cameras will be the same models available to consumers, confirming the incredible reliability of Nikon products, as well as their ability to withstand even the harshest of environments.
Gavin, I know two other photographers who had this exact problem. Sony service were able to help them out quite quickly. They suggested that you remove the battery and lens and memory cards first. Then, drive through the suburbs until you come to a builders skip, big yellow thing for rubble. Stop the car, throw the camera into the skip. Go home, put the battery, the lenses and the instruction manual on Ebay. Next, you google Nikon dealers in your area, and go and buy a Z7II with two or three lenses and a spare battery. They did suggest the D850 but looking at the way you're struggling up those hills lately, I don't think you're man enough for one of those. Sony eh? I thought they made TV's and HiFi systems, when did they start with cameras then? Good luck with the Nikons, the lenses are so sharp you'll cut yourself so be careful young Gavin.
NASA has ordered 53 standard Nikon D5 cameras with no special hardware modifications. these D5 cameras will be the same models available to consumers, confirming the incredible reliability of Nikon products, as well as their ability to withstand even the harshest of environments.
I can attest to Nikon Z lenses being absolutely Killer in quality and value. The 14-24 F2.8 is a beast. I’m on a z6ii but z7ii is joining the mix very soon. Don’t believe the hate these Nikon cameras are awesome especially for this kind of use case. I sold all my Sony gear a month after having the Z6ii. I recon the Z7ii will be flooding the used market soon after the Z9 releases so I’ll swoop one up then.
@@roughgardenlife As a Z7II user it is great, but I'd wait for the 2.x firmware update (2-3mo?) to choose it over the R5. I've also used the A7R3 and EOS-R in comparison.
@@roughgardenlife A7R3 for birds/action as well as customization, but not for JPG or landscapes (awful greens and yellows IMO.) The Nikon 24-70F4S alone is much more compact as well as shaper than either 24-105f4's. The Nikon primes are bulky but stellar. I'd personally give up some quality for compactness. The f-mount glass was "good enough" for me. Most of us suspect that the current firmware doesn't fully utilize Nikon's dual processors as much as it could. The Z7II is plenty capable, but you have to work a little harder, and bein the right focus mode between the 10 of them. When the Z9 comes out with real-time AF there is a small chance it could make it to the Z II's. I'm gambling on it. Check out Hudson Henry's recent R5 videos.
@@roughgardenlife there is nothing wrong with the current firmware per say but the auto focus tracking is just not up to par with Sony or canon. The Zii cameras have dual processing power though so when 2.0 firmware drops we presume AF will be greatly improved. Nikon rumors was reporting a few weeks ago that in September the 2.0 firmware will release and it will provide more robust eye af and tracking that is like a light version of what is coming with the flagship Z9. It sounds like the AF for the z6ii and z7ii will be something like what Sony did when the A9ii came out and they release animal eye af firmware for the A9, A7r4, and A7iii although the A9ii was the most powerful of the bunch. My fingers are crossed but for shooting landscapes and general shooting you don’t really need tracking. It’s the sports and wildlife photographers that are complaining the most.
When in the field it's a good idea to try a factory reset. You may lose some custom settings but it may get you back in business. Did it one time with my Sony A1. These things are part computer and sometimes need a fresh install. Certainly can't hurt in your predicament.
Same her. Factory Reset and just using original batteries. Judging on the display Gavin seems to use not too many custom settings. So, not much work to do with a reset. Usually computer's BIOS updates also needed a "default" reset to work properly a view years ago. So maybe after a firmware update also do a factory reset.
Yep, I always have a backup battery for each of two cameras. Always have a backup body and lens at hand even if it is a compact Panasonic GX80 or Olympus E-M10 Mk2 which are light enough to carry. The best camera is the one that you have with you that actually works.
Can everyone just take a moment to appreciate the effort in taking a cake, dress, and fresh flowers out into the wild camping just to do a bit on a landscape photography video 😆
Hehe and going by the sound in that scene they also carried up a 3x4 room to set up around the tent for that nice, close-room reverberant sound! :-) It was a good gag, though.
We currently use Panasonic full frame mirrorless gear and have been thrilled with it. Our S5 cameras have always been 100% reliable even in adverse weather. They are tanks.
It happened to me last time once with my A7riii when I was also shooting in misty, wet condition (but not that's cold as your). And then I found out that is bcos I left my flash hot shoe open for sometimes without putting the cap on whenever I take out wireless remote trigger. Once I dry it up, it works again. Since then I always make sure hot shoe cap is on whenever I take pic in misty condition.
@@stew8584 Yes, I do saw it in the video. But later stage I also notice that the mic was taken out and left hot shoe open. I was wonder whether he did take it in and out during his shooting. Only Gavin know.

never had it happen Gavin, but i did once not secure my Nikon securely to a tripod and so it fell into the ocean right at the shore line with all the salt water mixing with sand... and it continued working for years later hahahha I would never leave Nikon after that .
same happened with me, i was shooting seascapes and a big wave came , i ran to protect myself and forget camera and my d850 was totally wet . Man i was so scared for my D850..but its still working fine after 3 years..GOD Nikons are built to last.. I purchased 2 Z7II Bodies now.
I heard Hudson Henry talked about similar experience with his new Nikon ... He did rinse the camera in fresh water after the salt dip, and he showed in the video how he rinsed it ... poured fresh water over the camera! :)
My dog once ran me over with her lead and I dropped my Z6 from five feet onto solid concrete with a 200-500 attached to it. Had to buy a new lens hood and the L-bracket got a big scratch. But both the camera and the lens had zero damage
Camera brands I have had problems with: Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sony. Nothing is fool proof and that’s why we cover our asses with backups. I have the Sony A7R4 and regularly shoot more than a 1000 images a day at weddings. Same with my A7R3.
Guess anything can fail, I've been a Nikon and Canon shooter for the past 25 years, needed two trips to Canon CPS for repairs, one was my fault and the other was a failure on the camera's part. Only shot Canon for work after that, in my 25 years I've never had one Nikon issue and never once needed to send any Nikon camera or lens in for service. Millions of frames on Nikon bodies and lenses and never one issue. Guess I'm lucky?
Gavin, I had a similar Sony experience on my only trip to Iceland (so far). On several occasions when the early morning temperature was below freezing, my brand new Sony A7R3 died. My guide told me that Sony cameras were designed to operate in the range of 0 to 40 degrees centigrade. On checking the manual I found this was true - "Operating temperature: 0 to 40°C (32 to 104°F)". Grrrrr! On an earlier occasion I was on a tour to South Georgia and just as I was lining up a shot of 3 lovely glaciers going into the sea in a curved bay, my (also brand new) Sony camera died. Fortunately I had a second older body. Sony replaced the whole PC board. Now? I'm shooting with and loving my extensive range of Fujifilm cameras and WR lenses (-10 to 40°C).

Great video Gavin. There’s some bs appearing in the comments though. The Sony a7riv is as well sealed as any Canon or Nikon except on the bottom of the camera. Since you always have an L bracket on your camera this is unlikely to be an issue for you. I also own both Fuji GF and Sony. When I go hiking in alpine areas I nearly always grab the Sony because the lenses are smaller and lighter. Despite your camera failure you got some great shots al though I do understand any bitterness or resentment that you might now carry towards Sony. If you do switch you can’t go wrong with any of the manufacturers.
I’ve had several camera failures over about 30 years, 1 Canon 5DS-R, a Canon 1D, a Nikon D750, a Nikon F5 and a SONY A7. I always do shoots with a backup camera and EVERYTHING else (cards, batteries, cables, etc).
I feel your pain, Gavin. My a7r iii had a shutter failure last May while in Moab. It has been fixed since then but I can't leave the house without worrying about it coming apart again.
I love all the people in the comments being like “I carry 3 cameras and 20 batteries, noob!” Hikes like that you’d be insane to load up on that weight.
Gavin, happy belated birthday. Aeropress owes you as I just ordered one from Amazon for my wife for our anniversary in September. She's an avid hiker/camper/coffee drinker and that has her name on it. And after 27 years of marriage, a gift like that hits the spot and is all you need. Try it!!
I've had a similar problem with Nikon years ago, sent the camera in for repair twice and they couldn't find the fault. When I got it back it did it again. Turned out that when the batteries lost its capacity it would just die even though it was showing 50-60%. Maybe it was my fault for using third party cheap batteries. But when I bought *cough 'the real batteries'* it worked like normal. Lesson learned, DONT USE CHEAP BATTERIES OF AMAZON. LOL 😂
Funny that, my Nikon is playing up on occasion atm and I do use 3rd party batteries as the original Nikon battery died after less than 2 years and before any of the 3rd party ones.
@@TerraPosse I've seen it a few times, once the camera tries to focus or write to a memory card it just freezes then turns off. When the camera needs a power demand it just defaults turns off.
Batteries - my thoughts exactly. Or some mechanical issue with the lens. When the AF motor needs to move stuff around it takes more current then in normal operation, voltage drops, camera goes apeshit. Would be interesting to see if this behavior persists with another copy of the same lens.
I’m a recent convert to your channel, yes I’ve subscribed and hit the bell! I love the humour and the way you don’t take it all too seriously, yet your images “ here’s the shot” are second to none.
Sorry about the camera, but I had to chuckle when you asked if Eric had a second camera with him. It's like when people ask if I have a knife on me. I reply, "Yes. Why don't you?"
WOW! Those shots were amazing! Hope you figure out the camera problem. The gimmick with Amanda was hilarious - the best part was when she whipped out the flowers, LOL!
Too Bad Gavin! I've experienced something like this with one on my Fujis, all was deep blue, flashing and blinking. Now it's back to fuji to see how it could be solved. Electronica S*...Ks! Great shots by the way!
I've been using the z6 for a couple of years. I've used it in extreme conditions such as seascapes, waterfalls and in light rain. Its also been hit with salt water a number of times. Never had a problem. I now have a z7ii which 45mp. I would have to say Nikon Z7ii is one of the best cameras for landscape photography and you don't have to pay with an arm and leg compared to the other brands.
The 9:35 mark for me is magical, seeing your eyes light-up with joy as you got the lighting that you deserve after all your hard work and all the challenges of the past year. I love seeing those joyful moments, of artists in their element with everything coming together to reward their investment. (this comment of course ignores what happens later with the Sony camera...)
Yes, pro gear can let you down. The thing is, 15 years ago the three main features of pro gear were: durability, usability/ergonomics, pro customer support. No offense, but Sony never excelled in any of these categories. They rather spent that effort on marketing through social media influencers. Making "a whole new generation of pros" believe that they need 20 or 30fps and 40, 60 or whatever megapixel instead of reliable camera. Yes, cameras of other brands fail too, but especially with challenging conditions Sony seem to fail more often.
I have to say when I saw the title and started watching I thought "click bait". To my surprise, this video was not only super entertaining, but your images were stellar! Kudos! Very refreshing content in this era of sameness. Good stuff! PS. What else do you expect from a consumer electronics company??
Great question! How DON'T you have a million subscribers yet?!? This channel is apparently the most-hidden gem of photography vlogs on TH-cam! Absolutely brilliant. Keep up the good work, Gavin!
This is likely a voltage droop issue caused by an old, defective, or damaged battery that cannot maintain sufficient voltage when moving that big lens in the cold. You might want to consider a vertical grip with two batteries, but you certainly want a number of fresh backup batteries to try. As far as a backup camera for landscape photography, I suggest a Panasonic G9. They are very cheap, built much better than Sony cameras with obviously superior ergonomics and it can shoot 80 megapixel images using sensor shifting. With a comparable lens, the kit would be much smaller than your a Sony system. Alternatively, you could buy an A7r2 which you can get now for as low as $1200 and it still has one of the best sensors available on any camera.
@@dreamdiction 100% I have experimented plenty with battery packs and cold weather. All lithium based batteries drop voltage significantly in low temperature. Proper voltage regulation can mitigate this and Sony should pay attention. Anyone rocking a GoPro Hero 9 Black in cold weather probably knows all about this... To take overnight low temperature time lapses, I ran my sony gear with a 7.2v pack loaded into a drinking thermos and sealed in with a sock.
That's why you should keep backup batteries burried deep in your jacket, where it's warm near your body and just switch it when one starts to fail. It's kinda sad that he is blaming camera and especially Sony, when it could happen to any camera, because batteries are nearly all the same.
As a professional, definitly you have to go up the mountain or anywhere, with two bodies. I also had a trip up a mountain in Torres del Paine/Patagonia where I stayed 1 month up a valley and just in the last days (fortunately) my Nikkor lens 16-35 mm did not work anymore (it is now repaired, some 3000 km further north, in Santiago de Chile. All important pictures had been done. If I remember well I had with me some old Nikkor lenses which helped me anyway. Still have all my Nikkon Equipment but I went Fujifilm a few years ago. I admire your actitude with this frustration. You were very calm. Greetings form Patagonia (Chile).
I had my Canon 5D mk III start failing while on a trip many years ago. It can happen with any brand/model. But, I always have two camera bodies with me for important shoots. I also recently dropped a camera while on a client shoot and having the backup saved me. I was able to eventually get the dropped camera working again at home. One of the shutter curtains just got jammed up.

I really like your channel. But never in my lifetime would I go to such a location without a backup body. Especially on such a misty day, there can always be problems with the contacts etc. This could have happened with any brand, but I guess you know that. So that's the answer to your question, the mist and moisture can cause problems with contacts, doesn't happen often, doesn't have to happen, but it can. Under such conditions I always take a second body in a dry bag with me, that only comes out if there are problems with the first body. Still a great vid!

Easy.
The right hand for sure?
I always carry 3 camera bodies or at least 2 for every professional project, electronics are electronics and no matter the brand there's always a chance of failure my friend!I hope it can be fixed.

Low down, no doubt. Love my Z7. Can’t beat the images.
Gavin, you have surpassed yourself! "I do have a face like a burst Appendix!" I nearly fell of my chair with laughter!
😂😂😂 Me too. Gavin‘s „My face looks like…” statements: genius and epic, each video another one.
My wife's from Leeds. This is spot on.. LOL

Bwahahahahaha.... 😂
Sounds like a legit solution...

I can attest to Nikon Z lenses being absolutely
Killer in quality and value.
Great to hear. I also sell all my sony gear and now i consider the Nikon z7 ii. But i`m not sure if i should go with the Canon R5.
@@roughgardenlife As a Z7II user it is great, but I'd wait for the 2.x firmware update (2-3mo?) to choose it over the R5. I've also used the A7R3 and EOS-R in comparison.
@@skyrunr Do you like the z7 ii better than the sony a7r iii? And what is wrong with the current firmare?
Nikon never failed me. Not a single time. FM2n, D3, D500, D850, Z7
I'm a Sony shooter and I would love to see a follow up video on what went wrong. Maybe the frog explosion had something to do with it.
When in the field it's a good idea to try a factory reset. You may lose some custom settings but it may get you back in business. Did it one time with my Sony A1. These things are part computer and sometimes need a fresh install. Certainly can't hurt in your predicament.
One just has to remember to switch from lo rez jpeg back to RAW...
Same her. Factory Reset and just using original batteries. Judging on the display Gavin seems to use not too many custom settings. So, not much work to do with a reset.
Usually computer's BIOS updates also needed a "default" reset to work properly a view years ago. So maybe after a firmware update also do a factory reset.

Welcome to Switzerland! Somebody said years ago that Sony is consumer electronics. That did stick for me.
Fail more often? Based on what? What is your source of data to draw this conclusion?

All batteries have greatly reduced output in very low temperatures.
"Give me a call Fuji..." Love it. I had a Sony A7ii that simply stopped working. Jumped onto Fuji and I love their system.
I've had a similar issue with my A7 III and was able to resolve it by removing the battery and putting it back in. Sorta like a hard reboot.
Loved the video! Keep us updated on the camera. I was hoping to upgrade to it at some point... now I'm not so sure.
Absolutely fantastic vlog Gavin the photos are stunning sorry to see your camera 🤬let you down and the weather was behaving it’s self but with all that you still manage to get some laughs thank you for sharing your video, married life is not so bad I should know I’ve done 42 years highly recommend it .
When that happened to me with my A7iii it was the hotshoe getting condensation in it. Now I always gotta have the damn hotshoe cap on. It's been rock solid since.
Did you know that those buggers turn invisible as soon as you take them off the camera?
@@WhiteRabitMedia haha so true
Subscribed 10 seconds into this vid … what a refreshing take on a photography channel, absolutely love the humour and the stunning landscapes of course! Love my Fuji X-T3, might not be full frame, but that’s not hugely important and it’s never ever let me down.
When I called my Glaswegian wife's parents to ask for her hand in marriage I could hear her dad shouting in the background ... "Aye rite that's fine wull she be coming to get her sh*te oot the guest room then? Nae bother he wulnae unnerstaun me onyway!" He was not wrong! 🤣 You should switch to Olympus or some good camera. Maybe Canon ... 😏
Beginning to think YT is psychic. I upgraded to a D850 a few years ago (from EM5MkII) for my underwater photography but the plague has made me realise how I was limiting myself. Was just thinking about some land based photo projects, and this excellent channel popped into my feed. Have Chasing Awe by Gavin Hardcastle on order now, not sure where I saw advertising for it, you really should mention it in your videos.
Anyway, looking forward to starting a bit of a landscape journey thanks to your channel!
Get a Nikon. Life is simple don't make it hard.
TH-cam (randomly) recommended this to me, and came to see what the failure mode, but stayed for the awesome views. Thanks!
Why are some TH-camrs so underrated...
Best work and best humor. Definitely what I want in my photography.
