  • The Prius has been a MPG hero, but a poor driving experience since it's introduction. Now the 2023 model is here with good styling and more power in search of new reputation.
We test drive it in its natural habitat - LA 405 Traffic. Has the Prius redeemed itself?

I had a 2008 Prius and a 2012 Prius plug in.. both were great cars.. put over 200K on each of them with no problems... I sold my last Prius in 2020 and bought a Tesla Model 3. I like the Tesla a lot, but I still miss my old Prii..

@@justseifertUntil now. I have both a 2004 (I bought new) and a 2023 Prius Prime XSE Premium I bought a month ago. I consider the 2023 model as the true heir of the 2nd Gen.

My wife has a third gen one, and the engine noise in sport mode (yes, really) is one of the few things I like about it. Mpg is the other. Sound system is ok too.

Hi, from Japan!! It seems you two are really interested in the Prius. Me, too. Many car enthusiasts are as same as us. Then, you two give us how the Prius is like from many aspects. You two know what we want to know. You guys are best!! I have been seeing some guys get off from their new Prius with bragging face recent days, by the way.

I think the best tthing that can be said about the new Prius is the fact that I have watched and enjoyed two separate TestDrive videos about it and thoroughly enjoyed both of them. A lot of that is due to you gents!! Love the content on all the platforms. This is the first Prius that is genuinely pretty (not just "not bad for a Prius") and im with you Todd, if that was my commute/driving needs, I'd seriously consider one. For the first time EVER!!!

@TestDriveVideos Truthfully, if I didn't know it was a Prius, especially in a color, it would catch my attention as an interesting, unique and pretty car. I don't even feel the need to say that it's "pretty for a Prius." It's just a unique and pretty car, and I'm a die hard muscle car guy. I'm also the guy that asked the question about the best looking 50s-70s car on the live stream and mentioned I'm partial to the first Gen Stingray as one of the most beautiful cars of that Era, to give you some context of my proclivities.

I have a 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid, and I run Continental DWS V-Rated tires. I lost some fuel economy (about 60 miles per tank), but I tell you, it’s absolutely worth it! No one expects a Hybrid to take a slow curve fast, or to turn-in as nimbly as those tires allow. Highly recommend getting performance tires, and if you really want to regain the mileage, get lightweight rims!

Love your review, but have a bit of a bone to pick. I very recently traded in a 2015 Honda Sport for a 2023 AWD Prius. Not a performance car maybe, but only if you're used to Vettes, blown Mustangs, etc. But I can say that the Prius not only accelerates quicker and faster than the Honda Sport, but also does better on mountain curves. I live in an area high up on a plateau with a well-known 9-mile climb to the top so I test this often. Yes, the Prius excelles on steep curvy roads. Here is a link to the Pine Canyon US2 road that I'm talking about:

I may be wrong, but I think this car could flop. Why? Because the current Prius owner likes owning a Prius, and part of that ownership is how unique (weird) looking they have always been. Owning a Prius was a statement - who cared how they looked or how they drove. Now, they are faster, drive better, and, look, great. Should be a win? However, those who like faster cars, that drive well, and look great won't want to own a new Prius do the history of what it has stood for years. People will tire of 'I bought a Prius, no, it's totally different'. And those that have owned Prius for the statement it made and don't care how they drive will not buy it because, 'Did you get a new Prius?' 'No, it's totally different'.
I am not saying that every Prius owner is like that, but I don't believe I am wrong that many bought one for the statement it made and won't like new the direction.
Toyota should have just come up with a new name for the totally new car.

This car is boring & uninspired; the textbook definition of basic transportation. I’m not even hating on the car, as people looking for point A to B transport might find this car fits the bill.
I happen to enjoy driving; performance & experience in reaching my destination. As such, this car epitomizes a non-starter for me.

I don't understand why manufacturers bother to hide the handles on the back doors if they're not going to do it on the front too. It just throws the symmetry off.
