- Two officers disagree in a nuclear bunker.
MINUTEMEN is used with permission from Jason Nolte. Learn more at imdb.com/name/....
Lewis and Wil are two career officers who man the controls of a nuclear ballistic missile in a remote bunker. They enjoy a cordial if surface-level working relationship in a thankless job marked by self-described "decades of monotony."
But one evening, the alarm sounds to arm and fire the missile, though it's not followed by any confirmation. Locked in a silo without any communication with the surface, Lewis and Wil face a choice: complete their mission, even if it means ending society as they know it, or disregard the alarm as a malfunction. They must act fast and in unison. But as the seconds count down, hidden agendas rise to the surface and tensions reach a boiling point, as the fate of the world rests on their shoulders.
Directed by Jason Nolte from a script by Travis Milloy, this charged dramatic short begins with two officers settling into another day at work. From the personal effects on the desk to the air of everyday wariness to the pleasantly mundane chitchat, it seems like another day on the job. But this is no ordinary job. It's in the bunker of a nuclear missile, and Lewis and Wil are the ones in charge of discharging it if called for.
The well-crafted storytelling takes pain to set up the ordinariness of the work environment, along with Lewis and Wil's relationship. Lewis is the older, more experienced officer, and Wil is younger, quieter and more deferential. But that dynamic is challenged and tested when an alarm goes off -- and Lewis and Wil must work together in synchronized action to discharge the missile. The procedure is challenged, however, when the alarm isn't followed up with confirmation and communication is cut off with the surface.
Lewis is convinced that they need to act, but Wil isn't, leading to a pressure cooker situation and a battle of wills. Actors Terry Serpico and DeJuan Johnson embody their characters with understated yet pitch-perfect performances. As the pressure mounts and the tension ratchets up, their facades of civility crack to reveal the adversarial tensions bubbling underneath. They battle over what to do, as their decision could determine the fate of humanity.
Building up to a taut, pulse-pounding climax, MINUTEMEN has the compelling suspense of a thriller, but it also resonates because the crux of the conflict comes from deep within the characters and their values and commitments. They may wear the same uniform, but they have very different ideas of what it means to serve. The film ends with something of a detente, but Lewis and Wil's working relationship will have changed forever, along with other ideas and values they took for granted. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
Something like this actually happened, but it was the Soviets who thought that they were under attack and ordered to launch. Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov made the decision not to launch, disobeying direct orders, because he thought that it was a mistake. He was right. We now live in a world that didn't have a nuclear missile exchange between the US and USSR because of this one man, whom most people don't know of.
Died in 2017. Briefly mentioned in the news.
There was another incident when DOD systems detected incoming missles over the North Pole, which turned out to be a flock of birds.
Or course, we've learned our lessons and now have or are developing hypersonic missles that leave even less time to evaluate a threat. Progress!
Afterwards, he suffered a nervous breakdown because of the the pressure that he was under. A quiet hero. Can you imagine?
He wasn't in a silo, his instruments were flawed and showed what look like multiple ICBMs incoming. He was supposed to relay his detection of those incoming missiles, but didn't. Because he thought it was a mistake. The US was conducting a massive nuclear war-game called Able-Archer at the time. Yuri Andropov was incredibly paranoid that the US under Reagan would preemptively launch a nuclear strike against the Soviet Union. We came very, very close. You might even say we've been on this altered time-line since 1983. We're on the timeline (or one of its offshoots) were Petrov didn't follow his orders.
Yup saw the movie documentary with Kevin Costner
Also during the Cuban missile crisis
The submarine lost power etc they thought the USA fired but one of the three officers refuse to agree to a launch
Yea, I like to think what we live in post nuclear apocalypse world
I admire people who are able to stay calm under pressure.
Amazing acting and dialogue. Nothing better than a glitch-y launch sequence to drive people over the edge!
I agree! Loved it
Thank you!
This short is more powerful than many-a-netflix show wishes it could be.
Can’t thank you enough for building the tension to a crescendo, but not devolving into a trite action scene… Wil just sits at his post, absolutely in control of the situation. Great writing, acting, all of it.
Thanks Mattrobinson47!
BRILLIANT!!!!! You kept us on our toes for 14 minutes!!! Amazing actors in such a drastic position! The naive part of my brain says that we should all get rid of such MASSIVE Destruction weapons...At the same time, no country, no nation, and not a single human on our beautiful planet deserves this! ENOUGH!
14 minutes? I would have sworn it was 5, it was so intense.
I think that all nations could get rid of nuclear weapons, because not every nation has them, and somehow we all survive.
Who will convince North Korea and China and Russia and Iran and ensure they stay free of nuclear weapons? Rememember how Russia signed an accord guaranteeing the security of Ukraine in return for disarming Ukranian nuclear weapons? That guarantee as we've learnt meant nothing.
In every generation there are people who are 100% convinced that complete disarmament is possible. Every few decades some event brings proof that it isn't. We don't have to seek war but we shouldn't be unarmed either. The real world doesn't work like 14 minute movies.
Thanks Tamingsouls!
felt like 5 minutes... Amazing good gripping stuff
Officer Rhodes pays attention and has incredible intuition and courage. Great film, thank you!
Thanks 12thDecember!
What an exciting short. I love the contrast in character.
Thanks chigozieubah5816!!
While these weapons of mass destruction exist we are all Shrodinger's Cat.
Neither alive, nor dead.
Not arguing for nuclear weapons, but we have always lived under threats of annihilation from nature and the universe.
2 big time recognizable actors. Outstanding.
Excellent. They are one of ten locations that control that missile group. There are backups for everything in this system. Not all of the 10 have to do their jobs to launch the missiles. Also they can be turning keys all day and if Command and Control isn't setup to launch nothing happens. The only way a launch happens is from the top. Doesn't really make me feel better but there it is.
Thanks edmclaughlin4923 and interesting tidbit!
That was very, very well done! The absolutely tight direction and writing made this completely believable, relatable ... and terrifying!
Thanks alicefreist318!
Well done, I had family members that worked in this part of the military, seemed to ring true for the most part, def a high pressure, high stress, high tension job
Born in 1962, so this really hits home.
With this gem and "Asynchronous" yesterday, I feel like Omeleto's really spoiling us. This channel's picks are always great, but these two are knocking it out of the park. (Or, here, preparing to knock it out of the park, and fortunately putting their bat away instead.)
Thanks Catherinszl!
AMAZING. Excellent film and acting!
TLDR: Crimson Tide. But acting was on par. Nice short.
Exactly 💯
Great short! Such an intense watch. This is one that will bug my thoughts in the middle of the night.
Thanks films_by_aw!
Holy moly that was amazing....
great short! the only part i'm not satisfied with is the stand down command/ glitch message after the expected launch window. would have been too late...perhaps should have come with 5 seconds to go...
Right!
Yes, even longer...when the glitch happened, the notification Would've been given...2-3 minutes at least, IMHO. However, INTENSE!
Very intense. Loved the acting
Thanks mirandalewis3392!
Wow! Reminds me of the opening scene from "Wargames". Very well done.
FAN-EFFEN-TASTIC!!!!! omg the tension, the dialogue, the build up. You just knew the wyte guy was gonna say it ..........
Knew*, white* guy.
We know that the white guy says it, because the writers want it to be that way, and for no other reason.
Do you also spell black as blyck? The word is white.
@@Kinship1 That's right!
@@Kinship1 I could feel a bit of anti-whitism from the film.
Isn't this how the movie "Wargames" starts? Great short though.
Bravo! Kept me in the edge of my seat. Great job by the actors giving it everything. Well-written and great pace.
Thanks Nate!
One word "SUPERB" edge of the seat short. Great acting awesome script. Well done all involved.
Thanks Pauldavey!
I remember when wiki leak guy leaked that video of a camera cru getting blown to pieces by aircraft so yeah don't be blowing up the world folks just assess the situation a bit more before you shoot
Excellent direction, writing, acting and scene design!
Thanks John!!
The tension 👏
SHEER TENSION
Loved this
That was intense! Bravo!
Thanks micknordstrom2591!
Another fantastic short! ❤
Would be perfect for a feature-length film.
People often say good shorts should be made into feature length films, and some probably could - but the beauty and genius of this (and others) is the world building, character arcs, tension and resolution the film-makers can achieve in just a few minutes. I think if anything needs to change, it's some big budget, feature length films that should be reined in and polished down to shorter, more coherent works.
Machine zip
never understand how or why people conflate the structure of a good short with the structure of a good feature - entirely different
@@Catherinzsl I agree. 1 of the worst ways to improve the best stories is to increase the budget. What would a budget do? It's already good.
Brad, no thanks!
This is definitely one where I want to know how the next day goes. Did he actually compromise and initiate that launch? Either way, surely the other guy doesn't want to continue working with him.
This was intense AF and i wish there was a little more of the story or an aftermath 😮
Wow. That was fantastic!! Had me on edge right to the end. Well done, please make more!! Mitch, Australia.
Thanks for watching Mitch!
This was quite the evolution over WarGames
Fantastic. Shared of War Games.
Best one yet!
Bring us more like this. This is brilliant.
Thanks Agentbey!
Their Department Christmas Party this year, gonna be off the chains! 😁
Well done 😊
Awesome acting performances from Terry Serpico and Dejuan Johnson
Happens more than you know!
Nerve -racking ordeal!!!
Beautiful Work
I'm gonna need Mr. Serpico to dial that back a bit :-)
Well done performances.
Just wow.
Damn. Well done 💪👍
Thanks fatherburning358!
Well Done…reminds me of War Games movie in the 80s. …very. Similar
Fun movie!
I was waiting for a MacGruber moment 💣💥
Awesome acting performances from everyone 😎
Thanks justingary5322!
Enjoyable but unrealistic.
New Sum 41 Album AND Omeleto video tonight? The world is a beautiful place!
YEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Damn! I haven’t thought about SUM 41 in mad long!
Excellent
Sergeant is an enlisted rank. Arent missileers officers?
Another settlement needs your help general
The most unrealistic thing about this is the apology from command at the end.
Exactly 💯
That's how close we are. Every moment of every day. We're just one mistake away from catastrophe.
hype! ty fam
The name of the senior soldier was quite cleverly chosen.
INTENSE! BRAVO!!
This is very similar to Crimson Tide
Wow. This why there are two
Storyline is like Crimson Tide
2:40 Security clearances come from the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) now...hmmm, good to know.
this is a old story from the seventies told in different ways, a true psychological conflict.
Just some sort of glitch...😱😱😱
Good thing giant floppy disks can't be hacked ... of course ... Of Course, but maybe.
I don't get it. At all.
The story was about people not following orders, and 1 of them almost destroyed the world due to a glitch outside of the room. Does that make sense?
@@eugenetswong yes, it does make sense.
Following orders or your conscience
absolutely beautiful
This guy played in Cobra Kai. Soviets and Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov
wow!
the guys dying for some action...lol
theres a whole lot to take in here more than what the eye can see .. the one thing one guy should not outrank the other or ..no rank when alarm hits just one mans thoughts
Isn’t this almost identical to the intro to the 1983 movie “War Games”??? Is there something that distinguishes this as different, or is it just an homage?
Very good story but damn I can imagine the cost of the set and video footage just to make a 15 minute video.
awesome
one day it might happen in a simlar way .. the chances of a failure, misunderstanding over time simply is there .. besides the obious chaos we already have and dictators running crazy
One thing immediately wrong with this film is that officers, not enlisted people man these silos.
„It‘s just a circuit…“
I like it, but it reminds me on guardians of the formula
Good job, but just watch Crimson Tide.
oops.
When 'Head off Cabbage on' lost it .......... !.Good job Sgt Rhodes ! .........
This is a good story except for one thing, I read that whole squadrons of missiles were under control of 5 command centers and launch procedures have to be 'voted' by 3 of the 5 of the command centers so even if one of the command centers didn't turn their key then 4 other command centers can still turn the key.
that's not really the point especially since there's no confirmation this supposedly happens in a world identical to the real world
Not a documentary, sweetie.
They were doing an all-day detention.
Nice, getting Anthony Michael Hall
He plays a good psycho
So did they or did they not get compromised 😮💨
That’s Anthony Michael Hall..?
gotta be the most mundane job ever
Minutemen or minute men?
Tense.
So first of all, that’s not even a Minuteman missile that they’re showing, secondly, Minuteman missiles do not refuel, they have solid, rocket motors, thirdly, Minuteman, three missiles are the only land-based ICBM missiles the high states has. Also, do I hear them using the word “Sergeant“ in this? They do not put enlisted men in those seats, only officers.
These are all valid points!
Are you aware that this is NOT a documentary? Are you aware that this is not intended to be a documentary?
Kinda looks like David Letterman’s brother.
There's two officers in those. Not an officer and NCO.
Can someone explain me the end please ? I'm not sure I understood it correctly. Was this a simulation all in all..?
I’m with you! I was thinking it was a nuclear reactor for most of it 😮
they basically said it was a glitch and there was never a launch command.
Who else would've launched?
Substance! Superb! Passionate acting!
Glad you didn't cast the sergeant as a woman. That would smack of an unhinged patriarchy message. Sorry to mention it, but I've recently watched Anne Boleyn played by a black woman cast just for the sake of it. Othello as a white man? That could work.
.....the only way to win, is not to play the game................
I hate Lindt praline.
