    It's good you spray ALL the screws and bolts once or even twice in a day or two in advance. If one has a screwdriver with the shank all the way through the handle --- Twist on the handle as you tap on top of the screwdriver using steady twisting force to unscrew ---- can tap on bolt heads before you try to undo ---- maybe a little propane torch to warm up the area to possibly remove bolt, stud or screw ----- if you are trying to save the hardware to reuse again, PLUS --- you don't want to break it off --- then you have now created more work not anticipated. ---------- Thanks for Sharing Slade --- Rodney

    Use some old piece of metal flat stock and fab up a bracket that sits on the front leg to make a base to hold the drain pan. Imo👍🇩🇪

    Nice video. 👍 I have the same case guard on my bug engine. The thermostat in that engine doesn't look right/original. I'm going to wait to see if you can figure it out.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks my friend! I didn’t see anything strange about the thermostat yet? Although I’ve never had a VW thing motor.

    • @vintage76vipergreenBeetle
      @vintage76vipergreenBeetle ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Slades VW Beetle
      The 74 type 181 thing engine is the same as a 74 type 1. The thing engine has case guards to protect the engine when used off road. The thermostat in the engine doesn't look correct to the type 1 engine. Maybe, I'm wrong. When you get ready to test and inspect the thermostat, we will see the difference. I'll be watching for sure.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vintage76vipergreenBeetle Sounds good!! It’s the first Thing motor I have done. I’ll be just doing the usual. Setting it in hot water, to check for it to expand.
      I forget the temp, until I check my notes.
      Is there something else different?

    • @vintage76vipergreenBeetle
      @vintage76vipergreenBeetle ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Slades VW Beetle
      I have a video on my channel on how I test thermostats. I read that to always test the thermostat in the original mounting bracket, so that it doesn't over expand and crack the housing.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vintage76vipergreenBeetle Oh absolutely! I did mention that when testing before. That would be bad without the bracket.

    Great series!
    Is the engine mount bracket an adapter that fits into the head of an off the shelf engine stand? I have a pretty good stand but not the bracket to hold the vw engine. It would be cool to be able to buy the bracket for my stand if available. Been looking around but haven’t found one yet?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There’s quite a few deciding factors.
      But these ones are too far gone. Especially the internal pipe, has exhaust leaks that would be very difficult to repair.

    What you say about not pulling the pulley and something about the distributor? What did you have to do before you took off the pulley?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Without going back through the video I’m guessing you were talking about the part where I said don’t turn the pulley if the distributor is not inside of the engine. Because it will damage the gear.

    • @Thomzombie303
      @Thomzombie303 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      yes thats it, thank you for replying. I am about to take the body off the pan of my 66 bug and at somepoint i will rebuild the engine. Not the original 1300, according to the numbers, it appears to be a single port 1500. I want to pep it up some with existing case, what do you recommend, i know i want a dual port heads, maybe dual carb set up, if the internals look good, what size heads should i upgrade to, if you were going to do it?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Thomzombie303 you’re very welcome! When the distributor is not in, and you turn the pulley, it will start to grind the gear down inside. The distributor holds it down tightly.
      There’s so many directions you can go with that. Of course, Dual port heads, and to keep it simple as side of dual 34 carburetors. Maybe a mild cam. You can get some extra pep without losing dependability. Now you can go a lot further and keep the dependability but it will get very expensive.

    • @Thomzombie303
      @Thomzombie303 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      what size dual port heads would you recommend if i (assuming the internals are in good shape) with the 1500?

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Thomzombie303 Honestly look into the CB performance Panchito heads. They flow nice. I would call them and ask which they recommend. They have nice heads
