  • The similarities between Kendrick's GNX and Tupac's album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory are striking.

I made a thread about this on Blue Sky. 2024 Kendrick Lamar = 1996 Tupac. Both really had missions to unite the people and gain power, but have simultaneous internal and external conflicts:
When Tupac went to jail sooooo many people had something to say about it (Jay Leno, Donnie Simpson, etc), but he was really hurt by other NY rappers that seemingly came out of nowhere and had something to say; even older people like Cube and De La Sol. That August 1995 Vibe issue was the last straw for him... we get All Eyez On Me and The Don Killuminati out of it. There's similarities with Kendrick. So many people have so much to say about Kendrick over the years, old and new rappers, since the Control verse where he also declared himself the king of NY lol [*"I'm Makaveli's offspring, I'm the King of New York/King of the Coast; one hand, I juggle 'em both"*]... Snoop posting Taylor Made; Everybody has an opinion about him being picked to perform at the Superbowl...and we get GNX in 2024.
While immersed in a beef with another rapper, both Tupac and Kendrick had/have bigger plans.
In a private conversation with Sanyika Shakur (Monster Kody) and in his interview with Rob Marriot, Tupac discussed plans to unite every ghetto in the US. It seems like Kendrick tried to do something with the pop out concert - *"I put one hundred hoods on one stage/ [...]/ I'm tryna push peace in L.A." - Kendrick on Reincarnated*.
In his last recorded interview with Rob Marriot, Tupac said his beef with Biggie was so little compared to the bigger plans he had. He talked about creating a new political party and building community by taking aspects of every great power. Kendrick wants to kill the party and bring true Hip Hop culture to the mainstream. This savior complex is causing an internal conflict with Kendrick; the same way it did for Tupac. You can hear Tupac praying and talking to God in Me Against The World and in his later works.

I think kendrick definitely sees himself at a crisis point and is drawing parallels between him and his heroes at similar points. Nas dropped one mic (man in the garden) near that jay z (drake) beef time. He also said that it was like “hiphop (the culture) is dead” in it’s infant stages. Nas won the lyrical but lost the commercial battle it should be noted. The difference is drake lost the commercial battle possibly.
One thing that caught my attention about him wanting to bring hiphop to the mainstream is that none of the features are listed in the song titles and the promotion was minimal for gnx. My guess based on this are that either he
      1. Is testing the waters of his mainstream audiences reception to plot his next drop
      2. Is seeing who is really riding with him. Numbers wise and demographic wise
      3. Just wanted to make what he wanted to make before dropping the taylor swift album for white people lol. The tde pglang interscope climate plays into this imo though idk what that climate is atm

Love this idea. The resurrection is where they say Christianity begins (with the risen son). Kendrick is coming off the cross to intervene in the affairs of this industry. What is the responsibility of the artist? When you have all eyes on you; when you have the ears of the world and hearts of the children? He rose to begin the movement. Who is the "I" in" Man in the Garden?" Its not just Kendrick. Will we weep at the crossfor the death of HIP HOP or will we get up and live and represent like we 'posed to .

I think he’s got several songs on here that resemble previous artists we all know he loves and respects. “man in the garden” gives “One Mic” vibes. “Reincarnated” obviously gives Pac vibes, but at the end, the conversation with God… gives me DMX “Damien” vibes. I could keep going. I really love this album, but I wanna hear that song in that 1 minute clip! That ish goes soooo hard!

I hated that AI stuff Drake did... on top of him not even coming close to Pac's flow. With Kendrick, his voice was a different tone, but he captured the aggression, flow, even the little pauses in between lines Pac did. I loved it

I found Curtis King, Justin Hunte and Professor Skye, and I watch your content on a regular basis now. The intelligent points of view have me doing additional research on my own. Kendrick has revitalized my interest in the genre and led me to pay attention to many artists that I would not have given a 2nd look before the "beef". Now, me and my 58 year old classic rock junkie self, is the person who let my staff know that Kendrick dropped on Friday and they were gobsmacked! I have listened to GNX on repeat with no skips, along with everything I can find of Kendrick's from Black Hippy to Mr. Morale. Thank you gentlemen, for all of your insights and thank you Kendrick, for being the artist that you are. Come on Super Bowl, which I hope will have 2 Lamars as I am a diehard RAVENS fan.😂🎶💜🖤🏈

I also kind of see the structure of the overall album being:
    - Aggressive off the bat with wacced out murals and squabble up, addressing the past year
    - Affirmations but still pride/ego in man at the garden, a victory lap in hey now. Even on my first listen I was thinking it was playing on themes of ego as a villain which has been a preoccupation in his music from the diss tracks all the way back to TPAB and wondering where that theme was going, even though man at the garden works even as an affirmation at face value imo. but with Kendrick we know ego/pride as a side of himself is a constant theme
    - So then the first half of the album ends with reincarnated, where the third verse is straight up Lucifer in the form of Kendrick having a conversation with God where God reminds him of how pride led to his fall and Lucifer promises to stop using music to corrupt/tempt people but to use it to inspire
    - The second half of the album starts with tv off saying "give them what they ask for": what people have kept demanding which is a big hit record, West Coast banger, a follow-up to the past year and Not Like Us, gives Mustard his flowers, some closure to put a bow on the whole past year to move on
    - The rest of the album has grateful or reflective love letters to his time at TDE (heart pt 6), to LA (dodger blue) and to writing itself (gloria), showcases a bunch of the next generation of LA artists after the first half had almost no features (mostly gnx but also dodger blue), and trashing things he thinks are bad for music (peekaboo making fun of modern mainstream music)

Also all artists representing "both sides".
Lyrics like "have you ever took a fade and ran 3 more back to back, oh you havnt then shut F up and keep it rap" sounds to me like he's talking about being jumped in to the gang, aiming at these rappers who want to be affiliated when they were never from that life, ironically 2pac fitting that description.....

Makaveli is a really good comparison. For me, GNX felt like a west coast version of Nas’ Stillmatic, especially with tracks Man at the Garden and Gloria, plus his overall approach to “destroy and rebuild”. It’s also a continued response to folks that claim he fell off after Mr Morale or that he can’t make hits, similar to claims made against Nas before he dropped Stillmatic.

I was thinking more garden of gethsemane when you introduced the thought behind “man at the garden”. But you introducing this idea has me finding a bunch of different parallels between the two. One is that Makaveli was the first posthumous project from Pac. And GNX is the first project after watching the party die. A reach but dot has me reaching a lot throughout his career 😂

1000 percent, the only difference is Kendrick is still alive when the album is out. Makaveli was Pac’s 5th solo project on a major label, same with Kendrick, Clinton elected on second term like Trump, Tyson prize fight just like in 96, even the Super Bowl that year was in New Orleans in that 1996 nfl season. Makaveli and GNX both released in November and on the same date numerology of 5. 11+5+1+9+9+6 equals 5 when you condense it down to a single digit, same with 11/22/2024

Talking abt the use of reincarnation in the album, I think this album confirms a theory I’ve had for awhile which is that each Kendrick album represents a different world religion.
GKMC is Christianity. The whole album is about his struggling b/t sin & salvation. Halle Berry & hallelujah. Sing About Me I’m Dying of Thirst is basically the climax of the album and it literally ends with him accepting Christ as his savior.
To Pimp A Butterfly represents ancestor worship. The album ends with him sitting down with 2Pac, his music idol growing up, and Pac talks about “It’s not even us it’s the dead homies speaking through us.” Ancestor worship is also a popular form of spirituality in Africa which TPAB is abt kinda returning to Africa.
DAMN. is based on Judaism. He says on the album “I’m an Israelite. Don’t call me black no more.” And he has his uncle who’s a black Hebrew Israelite talking about how his people are cursed because they disobeyed the Old Testament covenant.
Then MM&TBS is based on New Ageism. The album is about purifying yourself from within and taking big steps away from the trauma of your past and your family’s past.
He literally has New Age guru Eckhart Tolle on the album at several points.
And then I think GNX is Buddhism. He obviously talks about reincarnation on the song called Reincarnation, but he also references Buddha on the chorus for Hey Now: “Big face Buddha get my peace from within”
Idk I might be reaching but it’s something I’ve been theorizing about for a few years now.

    • @o.b.itwistedrose1091

Not the first time he mentions buddha. Listen to rich spirit i think. Kendrick is on a different dimension and a highly conscious being.

    • @tjpg25
      @tjpg25 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Eh, quite a few songs muddy the waters on this theory.
TPAB has i, alright, for sale, how much a dollar cost. All Christian themes, i dont see ancestor worship.
DAMN can be Judaism I guess but YAH isn't the mainstream view for that whatsoever. Neither is GOD. Not necessarily Christian per say but not either really, just a mixture of both as it uses Christian titles for Judaism topics imo.
MM&TBS, rich spirit and Mother I sober blatantly mention Christianity and Buddhism. United in Grief starts with acknowledging God, and near the end does it again.
GNX being Buddhism, I don't get that either. Sure, reincarnation as the title for the song works but wacced out murals starts with acknowledging God and reincarnation as a song itself is literally about Christianity. Squabble up starts by saying God. Luther has a chorus about God etc.
GKMC I agree, he has the ending of swimming pool and the interludes + sing about me im dying of thirst.

As a fellow Gemini like 2Pac & Kendrick “petty” is a trait that runs hard & strong in us but not necessarily a bad thing. I think the themes, tracks, and overall feel of it are more like “Me Against the World,” but the “Makaveli” angle is interesting, too. In the comments, a few others have mentioned it seeming more like “All Eyez on Me.” All of this speaks to the timelessness of Pac’s discography. But, it also shows Kendrick’s lyrical giftedness to even be compared to Pac for evoking the same level of critical analysis. Truly cultural/ hip-hop titans. 👑♊️🎭❤️

💯🎯📠 i agree Company Man 🫡. I think this is exactly what he did with this project. Also like a tribute/ode to LA (Cali). The Mariachi singer, the up and coming LA artist. It feels like an extension from the Pop Out. This is reintroducing Kendrick and his true core of LA (COMPTON, Cali) and the culture he comes from and repesents to the world. I think Super Bowl time we will get another album that continues down the path of Kendrick's evolution as a man and artist. After that album, Grammy's, Super Bowl performance, and World Tour, Kendrick Lamar will officially make his claim and argument to be considered the 🐐 of ALL TIME, ANY GENERATION. 🐐👑🥋

A take I like is that it’s a mixtape that would be playing in a GNX in the 00s. You got Anita, Luther, Debbie Deb, SWV(and the neptunes), Pac and west coast party vibes (albeit more hyphy and contemporary), and Gloria being kind of a “I used to love h.e.r.” nod. That all feels like a semi high concept for this album.
Curious how Whitney feels about Gloria though.
